With the precision of a seasoned and confident depth psychology author-guide, Stephen Aizenstadt's new book capably takes a holographic tour of the methods and potential benefits that can catalyze personal and community growth. The author gives practical steps and direction for deep engagement and sensitive perception of the manifold presentations within spontaneous dream content and imaginal space.

Aizenstadt shares personal examples that show that he has indeed walked his talk and freely offers the reader direct methods and suggestions to assist one's personal life expansion and rebalancing within larger frameworks encompassing community and planet . . . all born from insights gleaned from his substantial clinical experience and global depth psychology explorations.

Aptly titled, 'The Imagination Matrix' is written in an accessible, well-researched, and articulate style broadly rooted in the traditions of Carl Jung and James Hillman - all without becoming bogged down in excessive theoretical explanations, conflicts, or complex jargon. 'The Imagination Matrix' is indispensable as a potential life-changer that can significantly assist in sowing the seeds for future growth, development, and personal meaning. With careful tending, Aizenstadt's methods can lead to profound personal transformation and unleash positive energies. Not only does this book provide the seeds, but also multiple tools for ongoing deeply rooted health and nourishment.

The book, written by Stephen Aizenstat, a depth psychologist, is a guide to enhancing creativity and innovation by tapping into the power of imagination. The Imagination Matrix is a generative force that is present below the surface of our daily experiences. Beyond the deductive and rational thought process that is inculcated in every human being through institutional education, the writer claims there is a realm of imagination, and it is possible to tap into that and produce radically new solutions to our everyday problems.

The Imagination Matrix : How to Access the Greatest Power You Have for Creativity, Connection, and Purpose is a fascinating book focussing on the amazing human imagination. The author provides a range of tools and methods for using and exploring your imaginative resources. He uses shamanism, journeying, archetypes, mindfulness, meditation and refers to work by some of the great contributors in this field such as Joseph Campbell and more recently Jean Houston. I loved the exercises, especially the portal and journeying ones. The wider aspects and the more commercial uses of his methods did not appeal to me though. I loved the personal and more practical parts and would recommend this book for its' thought provoking and far reaching benefits. Every person and collective could use this book to make improvements individually or in a group environment, and to expand imaginative capabilities on all levels.

The provocative title and book summary drew me to this book written by an esteemed depth psychologist. It took me a while to engage with it due to the formality of the writing and some of the professional jargon. However, once I settled in, I became fascinated by his model for exploring consciousness – specifically the realm of imagination and its expression.

Many of the elements of his model are drawn from dreamwork, archetypal (depth) psychology and shamanism. Indeed, his own journey in consciousness is rooted in his work with well-known “authorities” in consciousness evolution as well as Indigenous elders. The brilliance of the author is reflected in the synthesis of these philosophies and practices. He presents in a simple, yet detailed approach to gain competence in working with the four quadrants – Earth, Mind, Machine and Universe – of the Imagination Matrix System.

I particularly enjoyed and resonated with the description of “Soul Companions.” There have been many names applied to the aspects of self in the inner dimensions. I found the label of soul companions strangely comforting and made these imaginal figures more accessible.

This is a book that deserves to be explored slowly, giving adequate time to embrace the practices and truly embody the Imagination lifestyle. Now that I have finished reading the book for the overview, it is my intention to return to it and do just that.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

DNF - Could be useful for some readers, but it was not entirely useful for me. Better for beginners on the subject or for those looking for an alternative route that might work better for them.
