If MTV and Hallmark had a baby, this would be it. Rolling Stone journalist Cecelia James is determined to make a name for herself, and at times this pursuit is to the detriment of her own relationships. When a chance encounter with a woman outside the Orange Bowl leads to a lucky break, Cecelia runs with the potential story.

She believes she has found the muse to one of rock-n-roll’s greatest love ballads: “What You Do to Me.” Lead singer and writer Eddie Vee has always claimed the song was not about any one person in particular, but when Cecelia digs into his past, she discovers his first forbidden love Sara Friedman. These star-crossed lovers barely had a chance, as Sara’s mother would not tolerate her daughter being with anyone other than a good Jewish boy. Then tragedy strikes, tearing them apart for years and causing Eddie to go into hiding.

Cecelia has distorted views regarding relationships courtesy of her unorthodox upbringing, but like the great Don Williams she believes in love. She is determined to right her own path while helping Eddie and Sara find their happy ending.

Rochelle B. Weinstein’s What You Do to Me is pure reading pleasure. Cecelia is real and raw and the secondary characters surrounding her are just as enchanting. This one was hard to put down.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing, and of course the author Rochelle B. Weinstein for the advanced copy of the book. What You Do to Me is out on October 17th. Go ahead and add it to your list. All opinions are my own.

What You Do To Me is a beautiful book about love, Based on the idea of a story behind the song Hey There Delilah with beautiful writing, characters and their backstories. This reminded me a lot of Taylor Jenkins Reed's works such as 'Daisy Jones and The Six' and I think it will be a hit for any fans of her work. Overall a fun and easy read with a hard-headed main character who is incredibly likeable and I really recommend.

Oh my gosh! This book is so wonderful! Told in alternating timelines, from the late ‘70’s, the mid ‘90’s and 2023, the story of a music loving writer searching for the muse of a hugely popular love song. Rich characters and well developed storyline deliver a musical literary masterpiece guaranteed to make you ugly cry. Perfect for fans of Daisy Jones and the Six.

Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC of “What You Do to Me,” by Rochelle Weinstein. This author has been one of my favorites since I first read her in 2012. Her ability to write complex characters and make the reader feel deeply keeps me coming back and her latest story is no exception. As is stated in the beginning, the author used “Hey there Delilah” by the Plain White Tees as a spring board into a fictional story behind a fictional #1 song that contains the same lyrics. The story is told in multiple times lines and points of view with a main character, Cecelia James, trying to trace who the muse for the well loved song. The chapters are named for songs about a person such as “Layla,” “Sweet Caroline,” and “Annie’s Song,” to name a few. I won’t say more except that it is a wonderful read as are every single book she has ever written. I highly recommend her as an author, and this book, too.

I absolutely loved this booked! Based loosely on the song “Hey there Delilah” it tells the story of a Rolling Stones writer who gets caught up in finding out the muse behind a song although it’s much more than that! A love story and a story of a torn apart family, this book has it all!

I jumped at the chance to read “What You Do To Me” and I absolutely loved it! This is the first book I have read by the author and it certainly won’t be my last. Ms. Weinstein tugged at my heart from the very first page and her use of song titles as chapter headings was like a trip back in musical time for me. I had to read Eddie and Sara’s story again so I could take in the magical moments of their friendship, budding romance and the way that music would always keep them together. Even though they came from completely different backgrounds, they ignored the naysayers and let their hearts guide them in the right direction. As much as Sara loved her family, she wanted more out of life than being suffocated by her overprotective mother who had already found her the perfect husband.

The stolen moments she spent with Eddie meant the world to her and in her mind she could see a future with him that would be filled with everlasting love, family and beautiful music. Eddie mesmerized her with his hypnotic voice, poignant lyrics and his positive outlook on life. Heartbreak, time and distance may have kept Eddie and Sara apart but there was no denying that their love for each would last a lifetime. Eddie and Sara’s journey spanned many years and miles and with the help of a determined journalist, their song of love would never be forgotten.

I'm struggling to find words to describe just how amazing this book was, the ending had me grasping for tissues. I just found my new favorite love story.
Hey There Delilah, has been a favorite song of mine for years, and when I learned this book was based off the song, and having read the authors previous work, I knew this was going to be a good one.
The characters were so brilliantly portrayed and the story had so much depth and meaning.. loss, love, family; it had it all!

I loved the premise of this book but just really struggled to get into it. It felt disconnected and the characters weren't that relatable. The idea was a good one, but execution didn't work for me.

I'm sorry, but this just wasn't working for me. I really wanted to enjoy it but it was a struggle. I appreciate what the author was trying to do, but it was clunky and needed some more revisions. I didn't finish.

READ IT!

No, no don't question it, don't worry about other reviews, just read it.

This story has multiple POVs, multiple timelines and just so much heart and soul. We follow Cecilia and Sara as they put us through a myriad of emotions in their quest for love.

I really enjoyed the time jumps, as it showed the character development of everyone. I loved how hidden trauma was uncovered and healed.

I will definitely read this one again!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC. All views are my own.

Thank you NetGalley for gifting me a copy of this book.

When I read the blurb I thought I was be as into it as I was with Daisy Jones and The Six. However, it wasn't the case. I tried reading it but after the first chapters I was just bored and didn't want to continue.

Maybe I've read the book at a bad time or it was just not for me but I ended up DNFing it.

This book was a fun read! Even though I didn't agree with many of their choices, i liked how realistic the characters were, especially Cecilia with her relationships. I think the plot and side plots were great in theory but I think they lacked in the execution - they seemed to be resolved too quickly especially when you consider them individually since the book does jump between them. I also think that the side plots should've been given more time, more depth.
Thank you for the advance copy!

While I enjoyed Rochelle Weinstein's other work, I just couldn't get into "What You Do To Me". I felt the plot never took off.

This felt like an attempt to write fanfiction as if the author was Taylor Jenkins Reid writing the origin story to Hey There Delilah.

I think the premise was interesting but I found myself bored almost immediately and could not bring myself to become invested in any part of the story. I didn’t care about Cecelia, or her constant poor choices. I think her journey as a journalist was interesting, but overall I had a hard time keeping my attention on this book.

Maybe this book just wasn’t for me because I see some people really loved it.

Cecelia is a writer for Rolling Stone. She has a boyfriend, Pete, who she loves and loves with. They have a plan to go on a cruise, and Cecelia gets sidetracked by a story and losing Pete’s camera. She meets a mysterious woman sitting near a concert memorial at a venue, and picks up an envelope. It’s an original song, written by a famous singer. The wheels start turning, and she follows the story.

This book was told in such an interesting way, with flashbacks and present day. It had a lot going on, which was sometimes hard to follow. But it kept my attention pretty well. I did think Cecelia was a little hard headed, but once you learn more about her you can understand why.

This book was cheesy, but sometimes that’s what you need. I’m glad I read it, but it isn’t one I’d read again.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What You Do To Me - is taken directly from the famous song Hey There Delilah (Plain White Tees) and Rochelle B. Weinstein used the song to explore an idea -what if every song has a very exciting and dramatic story behind it?

Cecilia James is a journalist for Rolling Stone and an enormous music fan and somewhat of a unorganized klutz. When she is following a lead on a story she misses an important date with her boyfriend putting their relationship at risk. Fortunately, she also stumbles into a clue about a famous song that may reveal a famous muse.

While her heart aches, Cecilia travels the US working on her one in a million stories about famous rock bands and their songs all the while hoping that romantic ballads are true and there is hope for her.

The story including lots of backstory about Cecilia which I appreciated as well as lots of music themed trivia and die hard romantic.
Tom Higgenson from the Plain White T's lent his lyrics to the story and Delilah will be running through your head for the next week ! If you are a romantic at heart, love your aught's music or just want a new heroine to root for What You Do To Me is the book for you! #LakeUnionPublishing #WhatYouDoToMe #RochelleBWeinstein #TomHiggenson #PlainWhiteTs

Thanks so much Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley.

I love Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's, and I thought this was a fun twist to write a book based on a song. I'd love to see this done again.

It did feel like a lot of the plot dragged on. I wanted more about the couple behind the song, and I was frustrated with Cecilia. I think I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I so appreciated all the creativity behind the plot!

There are not enough words to properly articulate how much I loved this book. First, Cecilia was an incredibly strong (albeit headstrong at times), driven woman in her career and I loved watching her find herself. In the process, we got to know Sara and Eddie, two more amazing characters.

What You Do to Me was rife with Jewish representation (which I can’t get enough of) and real characters. I enjoyed following along with their growth and development and of course, the nods to Hey There, Delilah, on which this book was based on. This is absolutely Weinstein at her best.
