Delightful, Time Travel Romance
They call him “The Devil of the Highlands." He has no choice but to be a highwayman to help his people. When the water brings him two women from the 21st century, it will prove to be a blessing and a curse. Can love ever be a curse? Jovianna tries to help Tobias defeat his evil brother, but everything does not go as planned. Does she find a way to fix her mistake?
In this time travel romance, we got two love stories. Jovianna and her mother went back in time to find love, but they would face challenges, too, of course. I loved this entertaining time travel romance and would recommend it. The entire series was a delight.
Book seven in the Time to Love a Highlander Series is as different and unique as the other books in the series. It is one of the things that drew me to this series. The author has a great imagination and uses it to give us readers a very delightful tale once again. I love the way that in each tale the mechanism of traveling back in time varies though it often involves water. In this tale both Jovianna and her mother, Amaranth are transported back to the year 1760, after the disaster that was Culloden. It is unbelievable how calm and accepting Jovianna and her mother are upon finding out that they have landed in another century. Granted one is a professor of Scottish history and the other a well respected archeologist. Also helpful is meeting the Highlanders from the Risk clan. From initial contact matters happen fast and furious. The characters are marvelous with some romance, danger, intrigue, and nasty villains mixed in. Nothing is certain under the very end. Tobias Risk is a bit of an enigma, seeming to run between hot and cold. It doesn't take much to set off his temper. Will it be tempered by Jovianna?
Another great time travel romance that I absolutely loved.
Jovianna and her mother Amaranth are both historians, while out hiking at the Devils Pulpit they get caught up in an unexpected flood that sends them back through time to 1760 Scotland.
They are rescued by Tobias Risk who is a notorious highwayman.
Tobias takes Jovianna and her mother under his protection.
This was a quick fun read that gave me all the feels.
Hoved that mother and daughter went back in time together as it adds something a little bit different to the story.
What I really love about this series is that they are well researched and always gives you an insight on how life would have been back then.
I pretty much love everything that Maeve Greyson writes! I loved the dynamic of the mother & daughter going back in time, usually it’s friends or just one person, so it was interesting. Tobias was a grumpy, stressed out bear and Jovianna was the perfect woman to soften his edges and tame the beast. There relationship and bickering was so cute. There was two romances, lots of action, danger and drama and a surprise pregnancy! Overall, a very enjoyable, quick read!
A refreshing historical time travel romance novel with an unusual twist In June, 2023. Jovianna Jacobs and her mother, Amaranth Jacobs, both historians and professors, are hiking in Devil's Pulpit, in the Highlands of Scotland, as they have done many times. Jovianna begins to fall into the gorge during a sudden flood. Amaranth grabs Jovianna to keep her from falling, but both do, and are pulled back in time to June, 1760. They are rescued by Tobias Risk. a highway robber and his guards. He must do this to pay the rents owed to his brother, Jamison, (who stole Tobias' birthright as the Earl,) who wants to sell the land, and evict all the tenants on his land. He is basically the Laird of the dilapidated country home while his brother lives in luxury in Edinburgh.
Jovianna and Amaranth are close, and work together to assimilate to their new circumstances. As a historian specializing in the history of Scotland, she is familiar with the time period, and both are able to fit in well. Jovianna is very practical, has very little experience in life outside her academic career, and is nervous about her feelings she begins to have with Tobias. While a free spirit, Amaranth is very pragmatic about their situation. She quickly enters a relationship with Tobias' first in command, Cade, and is very motherly to Jovianna as well.
Tobias and Jovianna marry quickly, and their relationship grows naturally albeit very intense.
There is one main villain, Tobias' brother, Jamison, who did many horrible things in the past. However, He is barely in the novel itself. While he is the main villain, I feel Mr. Tellerston, the rent collector, is the true evil villain. He arrives to collect the rent money, and tries to assault Jovianna. His evil deeds get even worse, but no spoilers here.
I have very few issues with the novel. I was very uncomfortable with how they dealt with his brother, and skimmed over parts of it. I also found Jovianna's reaction was a bit disconcerting as well. The lighter issues were very surface complaints. The quick description focuses on how Jovianna is very clumsy, breaks a lot of things, and causes chaos in her wake. However, it was barely mentioned. In the beginning, she accidentally broke a 3rd laptop in the very beginning, and later stumbled on a few stairs because of her dress. Tobias keeps her away from certain areas because of her tendencies, but the reader does not know why or what happened. Picky, I know. With Tobias, it is mentioned quite often in the beginning that he suffers from frequent horrible headaches due to a head injury. He has one in the very beginning, and none after that...I know, picky.
Otherwise, it is a wonderful historical romance. I love that her mother traveled back together. Most time travel romance novels focus on the fear, loneliness and insecurity of what happened. Jovianna and her mother were able to lean on each other, face it together, and not feel alone. The author allowed the story to flow, and showed the closeness Jovianna and Amaranth had.
I definitely plan to purchase the novel, and read this again. I read this quickly, losing sleep as a result.
This is the 7th of the series. It is a stand alone novel.
If I could, I would give it more than five stars. The fact that the mother and daughter went together was so different, and made for an even better story. It's the first time I've ever read one like this.
I would recommend this to a mature audience.
There are some intimate scenes. While tastefully done, they are described in detail.
There is a trigger warning for an attempted rape, but it was stopped before anything happened.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I've recently started enjoying getting swept away in time travel romance, especially when done by the right author, and Ms Greyson is definitely one of the right authors for this. This book is part of a series, but can also be easily read as a standalone. This one is a bit unique in where the heroine and her mother both travel back in time. Jovianna and her mother Amaranth find themselves caught in a rainstorm, triggering a flash flood, and travel back in time to 18th century Scotland. They are found by a highwayman, Tobias. Tobias and his men steal from wealthy travelers to help the people of their clan survive after his ruthless brother is raising rent and evicting families. Tobias is completely taken with Jovianna and the two embark on a beautiful romance. But it is not without it's hurdles and challenges. When Tobias believes that Jovianna betrayed them, it could cost Jovianna her life.
A wonderfully captivating and entertaining story and a great addition the series. The story is well-written and pulls you in right from the start. I liked how the characters were well-developed and I became invested in their story from the beginning. The storyline had a nice flow and the plot twists kept me turning the pages. The story has a nice combination of romance, adventure, and intrigue and it was a very entertaining and enjoyable story.
I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Boy what a tangle Jovianna got herself and her mother in. I enjoyed the witty comedy among Tobias and his men. Their characters were charming and enjoyable to read. I felt sorry for Amaranth, because she had to constantly adjust to Jovianna’s antics. The romance was sweet and heartwarming for the book. I was entertained by the plot and the characters. I received a copy of this book for a voluntary honest review
I enjoyed the plot of this, especially the side plots. This is a wonderful time travel book that stays in the past. I was sooo relieved when she decided to stay. But there are very intense moments when you wonder which would be better?.
I recieved a free copy so that I might tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book.
Accident prone Jovianna Jacobs and her young at heart mother are about to have an adventure through time. As history professors they have a slight advantage in knowledge if not in abilities.
Tobias Risk is doing everything he can to protect his Clan, legal or not. After procuring a particularly nice haul, he and his men rescue two strange women from the river.
A wonderful time travel romance filled with adventures and fabulous characters. Set in a difficult time for our highland hero and his Clan. Lots of giggles and a few tears.
Great fun.

1760 Finnich Glen, Scotland
Jovianna Jacobs and her mother Amarantha Jacobs are both Scottish history professors at the University of Glasgow, from the twenty-first century, in the current year of 2023. Her mother is hilarious as a widow and always checking out well endowed men no matter how young they are. Now her daughter will not date any men from the office no matter how attractive they might be. It does not matter how attractive or braw they might be, she has seen from experience and from other co-workers how ugly this experience might be when the relationship ends which makes it awkward for everyone in the workplace not just the broken up couple but all their co-workers too. Unfortunately Jovianna’s new research assistant Sam just doesn’t get the hint no matter how many times she says no!
Jovianna is the daughter and is an extremely tall beauty being five foot eleven inches, but an absolute klutz as she is always breaking their department's expensive electronic equipment in the classroom. However when she is on one of her favorite field trips or in her zone on one of her dangerous archeology journeys, she is calm, cool and collected. Furthermore with a clear head and totally focused on whatever Scottish subject she was currently studying. However, on her latest trip things definitely don't go as planned and are nearly drowned while exploring the gorge this time where both mother and daughter get a touch of food poisoning from her new research assistant and are swept away and end up in Scotland in the year 1760. Now due to their extensive research on Scotland both professors always felt that time-travel was a definite possibility, yet both knew how bad this time period is for the Scottish people.
This is where Jovianna meets the handsome highwayman who introduces himself in gaelic as Diabhal Dubh-Chridhe, as the “Black Hearted Devil” and is shocked she knows their home language gaelic! It is fourteen years after the battle of Culloden being history professors Jovianna and her Mum know things are only going to get worse as their way of life is only going to get worse for the Scots not better.
Even though Jovianna was English she actually understood why this man Tobias Risk and his small group of men Fitch is his second in command the the other men are Cade, Donnor, Pag and Silas who were holding up these wealthy English Nobles. After all Scotland was suffering some were starving and even dying some even betrayed by their own people for sheep! It was devastating time for the Scottish people! Plus he is only trying to protect his people and lands from his black hearted brother. Who wants to clear his lands for sheep and demanding for outrageous rents. Plus burning his lands, the crofters homes and murdering his people. He is a bit like a Scottish Robin Hood, stealing from the rich wealthy Englishmen and giving to his people to feed, clothe and make the necessary repairs to his crumbling castle.
For Tobias he is doing everything he can. for his clan to live and survive. He discovers two Englishwomen in unusual men’s clothes. He is instantly attracted to the distrustful and disrespectful younger woman. A woman who calls her mother by her first name which he finds very rude. Plus she wants him to call her by her Christian name, a sassenach stranger. He needs to make sure she is not a spy after all the stealing he is doing. After all, he and his lads would be hanged by all of their recent unlawful activities. Yet Tobias falls for her instantly as does his people.
Soon he discovers this woman who owns his heart has betrayed him and his people. Now Jovianna had only been trying to help him. She had been afraid to tell him about her plan because he has a short fuse when it comes to his temper. He does not trust easily plus what will happen if these untrusting and superstitious Scots discover these two Englishwomen are from the future? Will they end up burned as witches? Will Tobias open his heart and let love in? Will Jovianna trust Tobias and finally discover true love? Will she forgive Tobias for his short temper and tell him about Scotland’s future and the clearances? Can these two star crossed lovers even have a chance at happiness or go their separate ways? Read and find out.
Again Ms. Greyson pens another phenomenal masterpiece. This is her time- travel finale in the incredible Time To Love A Highlander series that I absolutely loved! A book readers will be gasping for air with so many twists and turns in this spectacular read! You can read an of the books in this series as a stand alone book.
A book I highly recommend!

Another fun time travel book into 18th century Scotland. This one was a bit different since Jovianna time traveled along with her mother. Highwayman Tobias Risk and his men help save Jovianna from the water and after she had hit her head.
I liked how easily the ladies seemed to fit into their time and both find love. As much as this was about romance, it really focuses on saving Risk lands. I liked that even though Tobias comes across as a bit dangerous at first, he really is just trying to help his people and is kind at heart.
I liked that there weren't a bunch of modern phrase slip ups, but just enough for confusion with the men. Revealing their past wasn't a main plot driver either, which made it feel more on the historical fiction side than time travel side. Another enjoyable book in this series!
Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
I really loved this book! It was well-written and it wasn’t your average time travel story. The characters were great and I thought the storyline was cohesive and moved at a good pace. Although some parts of the story seemed a little rushed, I thought overall it was a great time travel romance! Also, this reads well as a stand alone even though it’s part of a series. I haven’t read any of the others and this was still very enjoyable!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Dragonblade Publishing for an advance copy of this book!
Short of fan-girling this author (ahem more like fan-lady for I am 56 years old) I really like this book. It is a time travel romance from nowadays to 1760 in the Highlands of Scotland... It is my first book by Maeve and I liked the storytelling and the plot-twist. Especially the courtroom-scene was nerve wrecking... The love-scenes are contributing to the story but like some other authors NOT the core of the tale. But I have to say I swear that I heard the voice of Sam Heughan saying Dinna fash, lass.... Grinnik.
Again a good choice with Dragonblade Publishing. It is my go to site for historical romance!
I was blessed to read this book as an ARC and I really like to leave my
Delighting Her Highland Devil by Maeve Greyson is another of her time travel romances. The twist this time is that both mother and daughter travel back in time. Both find love, although the story focused on the younger, Jovianna Jacobs, a history professor whose knowledge of history will come in handy. Her rescuer and eventual husband is a highlander whose life was broken by Cullodon and his greedy brother. He has been trying to hold together the highlands’ manor and farms but the burden of the king’s taxes and those of his brother have pretty much broken him. He is able to keep things together by becoming a highway man who lifts the purses and belongings of wealthy English he finds on the road.
Jovianna is an enticing character with just enough information to be dangerous. She uses everything she has to save Tobias and is his people, nearly destroying her relationship in the fallout. She has grit as well as beauty. She has redeemed his heart and vows to cherish it. Tobias is an old-fashioned man, something Jovianna has trouble come to grips with as she navigates her new world. She also has her mother, Amaranth, to contend with with whom she doesn’t always see eye-to-eye. The plot is good and simple to follow, weaving history throughout. It is an engaging novel, Another hit by Greyson.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Delighting Her Highland Devil by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #MaeveGreyson #DelightingHerHighlandDevil
Delighting Her Highland Devil is a wonderful time travel story that is part of the Time to Love a Highlander by Maeve Greyson. While it is book seven of the series it read extremely well as a stand-alone since I had not read the previous books. I want to do so now. Why you ask?
There are several reasons, the first being I so enjoyed getting to know the characters. Jovianna Jacobs, a history professor specializing in Scottish culture, and her mother, Amaranth Jacobs, an archeologist, are both sent back to the 1700’s, These characters put the delight in this story. They have the background to understand and accept what has happened. Tobias Risk is a tortured soul who needs peace and love. It is so much more than he believes himself to be. Then there is the supporting character, one to love and ones to loath. The plot is entertaining without being heavy. While the attraction leads to marriage quickly, I liked that the story is contained not dragging the plot. Then I loved the epilogue, a perfect ending for Jovianna and Tobias.
A great read for an afternoon when you need to escape with a smile.
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Jovianna Jacobs, a history professor specializing in Scottish culture, is brilliant and students flock to sign up for her classes but she's also so clumsy, when she gets excited about a topic, her fumbling nearly destroys the room. Literally. After wrecking her third laptop in six months and completely embarrassing herself, a relaxing trek through Finnich Glen with her high-spirited mother Amaranth is just the ticket to put things in perspective. But a rainstorm triggers a flash flood and while trying to retreat and manage the hazardous waters, dizzying nausea overpowers her and the raging current washes her away. Tobias Risk, the ruthlessly fierce highwayman known as the Devil of the Highlands, has been fighting to keep his greedy brother Jamieson, the Earl of Grampian, from replacing their people with sheep to make more money off their lands. SoTobias and his men steal from wealthy travellers to cover the ever-increasing rents. After one such robbery, while washing his face in the waters beside the Devil’s Pulpit, a beautiful and helpless Englishwoman washes up at his feet. Not only that, but her irritating mother is with her.
Two english women taken back in time to 1760, english hating survivors of Culloden & you've the basis for a riveting read, throw in a self serving brother & my interest was spiked. The characters have lovely depth, the pace is good & the chemistry sizzles. I loved both Tobias & Jovianna & was totally invested in their very rocky journey to a HEA. Boy does Tobias put his foot in it & I loved the way Jovianna made him grovel. I also liked the secondary characters & the secondary romance. A well written story which whilst highlighting the conflicts facing Scotland the author didn’t labour them. Whilst part of a series it’s easily read on its own
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Jovianna Lillian Jacobs, is a professor of Scottish history, her mother Amaranth Jacobs is an archeologist. Both teach at the University of Glasgow. Together the take hike to different areas for fun. Their favorite is The Devils Pulpit.
Tobias Risk, Fitch Macaslan, Tobias’s trusted second-in-command, and Cade Maccolman, the oldest of their small brigade, make up the Devil of the Highlands gang that lightens the burdens of the rich to pay for their small clans survival.
While hiking in The Devils Pulpit both Jovianna and Amaranth are transported back in time. Where Tobias and his men rescue them. Tobias is immediately struck with Jovianna and his protective mode comes out but he does not trust them fully. When Amaranth weaves a tale that is believable, the men figure it could be true. Cade is smitten with Amaranth right away, the sly old coot lets her get away with bossing him around.
As things start to get more intense, both Jovianna and Tobias realize that the other compliments the others faults. They have to work together for the good of the clan. Jovianna starts with one of the horses that was obtained by Tobias and his men. The horse is scared and unruly. Jovianna calms the horse and realizes his hoof is injured. Tobias is worried his brother's tax man will try something to hurt his clan.
When Tobias states he has to reason with his brother or try to at least, the group heads to Edinburgh. Matthew Tellerston, the tax collector his brother sends as burned a few fields and cottages. Earl of Grampian, Jamison Risk, A greedy, glutiness bastard got the title by kissing ass in the king's court.
Jamison wants to clear the Risk land for sheep wool and the money it would bring him. He does all he can to curry favor in court, living beyond his means. When he prepositions Jovianna, she comes up with a plan she hopes will help. The Butcher of the Highland better known as Duke of Cumberland, is also involved.
Does Jovianna plan work? Does Tobias have a working plan? Will Jovianna and Amaranth stay or get transported back to their time? What happens that both hurts and helps them all?
Come join this time travel intrigue that will have you so enthralled you won't want to stop reading. It will give you goosebumps and have you rooting for Jovianna! Poor Tobias gets discombobulated with her actions and you can't but hope he sees he is good at heart. Family dynamics are a great complex story telling involved with this and makes it so worth the read!
** I'd like to thank Dragonblade Publishing for giving me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is honestly quite good for Outlander fans, as is the rest of the anthology series of Highlander romance by this author. This is a conclusion to said anthology and I'm so glad I was able to read this - I'll definitely be checking out the others!!!
The story is rather simple, but isn't all historical romance to a point? I found the characters relatable, real, and easy to connect to. Jovianna and her mother are a great duo and added a good depth of humor to this story. Tobias was sexy, dark, but ultimately so sweet and tender. Even though these men are labeled as "alpha men", they're just big sweethearts.
Now, I'm sure that there is a grandma out there who will enjoy this book, but I found it enjoyable even as someone who barely reads historical books and someone who is young! The romance moved quickly in this book and even though slow-burns are great, sometimes it's even better when everything gets to the point because it makes the reader fly through the pages in a feeling of giddiness. This book was spicy, but not in a cringey way that unfortunately is in a lot of books right now. In terms of the whole time-travel stuff, it's not a huge conflict in the story, and I prefer it that way. Time travel always hurts my little brain and when authors try to add too much analysis on it, it just spoils the book. While some things could've been added to, like character descriptions at the start of the book, I think everything ended up just fine. Enough detail to get you there, but not overbearing so that you're unable to have your own imagination on the characters or the world itself.
This book was a light and refreshing read in my boring day-to-day life. I will certainly come back to this author, as well as this publishing company, since they seem to have a few good niche romances!
Happy reading!!
Delighting Her Highland Devil book #7 by Maeve Greyson’s
“Time to Love a Highlander” series and I have enjoyed each story from beginning to end! Maeve Greyson has a way of pulling you in and making you see the story. This series has included many time traveling adventures with many lovable characters and the always happily ever afters for all, never over the top. Each story is a standalone romance but are also able to be enjoyed in any order. The romance in this story is angst free and goes from the initial meeting to lust-marriage-love rather quickly - fast read.
The plot takes a journey through known historical problems occurring in the highlands after the failed Battle of Culloden in 1746 and the subsequent highland clearances and banishment of highland culture. However the historical aspect doesn’t take over the romance part of the story. Again I always love her work and it is never over the top.
I received a free copy for an honest review.
Love her books-they have a good storyline and keep you entertained all throughout. Love the steamy scenes too! Get your read on!
