This novel was okay. The characters I couldn't connect with in this genre. I think I need something with more meaning as this felt very materialistic.
Another great cosy read and one I thoroughly enjoyed. I have previously only read and the first book in this series by this author and will certainly be looking for more to read in the future.
Set in a sleepy seaside village this is a charming cosy mystery, with a murder needing investigation by the volunteers at the local charity shop of course! The characters of course are quaint and the setting is ideal for this story and series. A book that is easy to read, not too long and is certainly cosy. It is entertaining and enjoyable, has the right twists and turns to keep me reading.
I love the ladies from the shop and love their fun and quirky ways of getting to the bottom of a murder mystery that needs solving. They make it easy to read and as always they bring a bit of fun and humour to the whole situation. Can't wait to see what comes next.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Another cozy mystery from Peter Borland where you spend the entire book guessing who did it with a smile on your face. Yet again the characters were believable and relatable. The writing flows easily and it is a joy to read!
“Friends are more important than money.”
The author has found his groove in book 2 of The Charity Shop Detective Agency series. The writing is smooth, the storyline flows perfectly and the gals are up against yet another mystifying conundrum. You can’t help but ask for many more adventures to follow especially with that ending!
I made a mistake with this ARC by thinking it was the first in a series – which it wasn’t, so ended up having to go in half blind which didn’t turn out to be as bad as I thought. I was able to pick it up quite easily, albeit with some missing information on characters from the first book. The mystery to this book was solid, and I loved the humour. There are many twists, and it often felt like there was a lot going on. I really enjoyed this book and would read others from the author.
I think Boland does a nice job of writing a cozy mystery that has a more complex plot. The pace of this one was a little slow and seemed disconnected, but did pull together nicely in the end.
I did purchase the first book in the series and read it before reading this one - but you definitely would not need to do that to jump into it.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to receive this book for an honest review.
This is the second book in The Charity Shop Detective Agency Mysteries.
This one was just as good as the first one. It has a lot of twists and turns.
This series features three senior volunteers Fiona, Sue, and Daisy and volunteer at the Dogs Need Nice Homes charity shop.
They also work together to solve murders in the a town called Southbourne.
On night a beach hut is ablaze and burns down to the group. The resident of the hut is saved but later dies. The officer investigating the case hires the women The Charity Shop Detectives to help find who set the fire.
You then go on the journey with the ladies and how they try and find a suspect.
These ladies are all quirky and fun and this is another enjoyable read.
A quirky little read. Cozy murder mystery nothing page gripping but still nice book to curl up with a cuppa.
If you like cozy mysteries then you will settle right in with this well crafted mystery. Set in a beach hut community where a hut has been burnt down with the owner inside and another will burn before the mystery is over. Enter the three ladies who volunteer at the charity shop to investigate and solve the crime before another hut burns. This book is part of a series but can be read alone. It’s not a fast page turning thriller but if you like a slower burn with quirky, loveable characters, Think Murder She Wrote then this might be a good read for you.
Fiona, Sue and Daisy are volunteer at the Dogs Need Nice Homes charity shop in Southborne, Dorset. They also together comprise the Charity Shop Detective Agency. You may see them as some nice older ladies who are rather harmless, but you should never underestimate them.
Summer brings the vacationing beachgoers, families and those who are the lucky enough to own one of the colorfully painted beach huts along Mudeford Spit. The luck runs out for one such owner, Malcolm, and fixture of the beach. His hut adorned with tacky seashells and beach items that are either trash or amazing treasure, depending upon the beholder. His hut set ablaze while he was still in it. Although he was pulled out of the fire, he did not survive.
Was this a unfortunate accident or something more sinister? The answer to that question is answered when another hut is torched,,,and another. The ladies race to find the perpetrator before more fires are set and time is ticking.
Although this is the second in a series, you need not have read the first to thoroughly enjoy this story. You will likely want to go back to the first book, just so you do not miss out on any of the witty banter and camaraderie that this misfit group of women share. It is a clever story with well written dialogue. The image of the the characters and lovely beachside are vividly drawn by Peter Boland.
If you are a fan of Richard Osman's ,The Thursday Murder Club or the Hawthorne books by Anthony Horowitz and throw in a little Murder She wrote, you will be smitten with the ladies of the Charity Shop Detective Agency!
My thanks to NetGalley and Joffe for the ARC of this book.
I loved this book. I loved that it rolled over me and although was quite thought provoking in places it was a really good read. I read the first book in this series and loved that. Think this one is even better.
Unfortunately I am going to have to DNF this one. I tried, I really tried. But I don’t think the cozy mystery genre is for me. It was a little too slow for me. And there was really not enough action to keep me turning the pages. There were too many characters and the nicknames were irritating. I’m going to stick to thrillers.
A great premise and two great characters.
This is both an essay on grief and a mystery. One of our leads is almost frozen by grief, the loss of her husband, and finds it hard to connect, to even want to connect, with her community - but then she never really did. The second is also grieving, the loss of a colleague and then his entire way of life. We see the awakening of both, the recognition that while change was forced upon them, they can mould that change to find a new happiness, a new purpose. It's uplifting, in this respect, and satisfying in the respect of solving a mystery..
This is the second instalment of The Charity Shop Detective Agency where my favourite older ladies are investigating what starts as a murder in a beach hut that was set on fire, but turns into so much more.
I grew even fonder of Fiona, Sue and Daisy in this one. I love the banter that’s often hilarious and how different all of their personalities are, but they all work together so well. Bitsy was an excellent side character. This book does have a lot of characters in it, but I didn’t feel like it was overwhelming.
I love Peter’s writing - it’s so addictive, which leaves me wanting more. Just like I want more books in the series.
I absolutely love the ending, and if there is another book (which fingers crossed there is), I cannot wait to see what happens next!
⚠️ CWs: fire, murder, grief, alcohol use; mentions mental health illness (depression) & cheating ⚠️
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read this book!
I loved this book. Maybe because I know the area and could envisage where things were. It’s the second book in the series, I read the first one and loved that too. It’s the story of three friends that work in Dogs Need Nice Homes charity shop and have formed the Charity Shop Detective Agency after they solved their first murder. A beach hut is set on fire and unfortunately the owner dies but looking at CCTV footage there seems to be no clue as to how the fire was set. I actually guessed how it had been done but even then there were new shocks with every page turn. And more fires are set. I loved Bitsy. I hope she comes back and I really hope there are more books and murders to come
Great to see the return of the charity shop detectives, they are Fiona , Daisy and Partial Sue and not forgetting the dog Simon le Bon .
The ladies work in the dogs need nice homes charity shop and are amateur sleuths on the side .
Someone is setting fire to beach huts and the ladies are asked to investigate and find the culprit.
I love the relationship between the main characters and the calibre of writing makes the book easy to read and most important enjoyable.
They book is peppered with comedy and also a touch of poignancy that makes it a perfect read .
A great read for lovers of the cozy mystery genre and I eagerly await the next in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books .
Back from their success in book one are Fiona, Daisy and Partial Sue from the Dogs Need Nice Homes charity shop, together with rivals Sophie and Gail from the Cats Alliance, Simon Le Bon and the Wicker Man. This time they are approached by Antony Owens from the Beach Hut Residents’ Association to investigate the strange death of a man whose beach hut at nearby Mudeford Spit was set on fire. Helped by part time fireman and window cleaner Martin, extravagant socialite Bitsy and fabulous axe throwing IT expert Freya they discover the seat of the fire was very strange indeed and the victim was an eccentric but basically well liked and kind man who helped his neighbours. After a distinct lack of evidence at the start, the ladies gradually reveal some potential suspects in this baffling case. But the question is, will they find the evidence they need?
This is a smashing follow up to the first story in what is becoming a charming cosy crime series. These three amateur sleuths, still on a learning curve and together with their various friends who have some unexpected skills, are an absolute delight and it was a complete joy to spend a few hours in their company. Amidst the snobbery of the hut owners, it was easy to picture all the beautifully drawn characters down at the beach and there’s plenty of humour in a well laid out gentle and clever plot which will keep the reader guessing right up to the end. I am definitely looking forward to more in this charming series! 5*
The Beach Hut Murders is the second book in The Charity Shop Detective Agency series. I haven't read the first book but this did not make a difference as this one was easily read as a stand alone mystery. It was a fun but slightly predictable cosy mystery. It didn't keep me gripped but it was nice to read something a little lighter than I normally do.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for my ARC.
I fall hard for this series when I read The Charity Shop Detective Agency: I loved the solid and well plotted mystery, the quirky characters and the compelling plot.
I had high expectations for this book and couldn’t wait to catch with Fiona, Sue and Daisy, the ladies of the Dogs Need Nice Homes, and read about their squabbles with the Cat Alliance.
This book is all I loved in the first instalment and something more as the ladies investigates another complex series of murder and use their brain to solve it.
I read it in one sitting as I couldn’t stop turning pages as I was having a lot of fun and wanted to know the solution.
If you want to read a well plotted and highly entertaining cozy mystery, if you like Richard Osman or Richard Cole novels, go and read this series.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Joffe Books and Books 'n' all Promotions for this digital copy, all opinions are mine
This is the second book in the series. It was a great read. The details and information about it make you fall in love with the characters. This is one for those that love cozy mysteries and I would highly recommend.
