My favorite in the Supernatural Singles series!
This was a genuine friends-to-lovers story that stole my heart with the forced proximity/roommate scenario. Bax embodies the quintessential book boyfriend qualities: kind, loyal, protective, handsome, creative, and loving.
Among the three sisters, Olive holds a special place in my heart, and I loved watching the personal growth in both main characters, especially since it only helped them grow closer.
Opposites really do attract in this story! Watching Olive's challenge of stepping out of her comfort zone was inspiring, and I enjoyed her finally coming out from behind her sisters shadows.
Olive Maxwell is 1/3 of the Maxwell witch sisters. Her fellow triplets, Rose and Violet, take part of the supernatural world, but Olive is content to teaching about it. In an attempt to move outside her comfort zone, Olive partakes with her college students in their Dare I Docket assignment. Her new roommate Bax Donovan agrees to work through the list with her.
Bax Donovan, Guardian Angel, is one broken rule away from losing his job. When he’s been assigned to Olive Maxwell, he wonders if the universe is out to get him. The unbroken rule? Don’t fall in love with your Assignment. But it might be too late for that.
I didn’t read the first two novels in this series, so I didn’t know much about Olive’s family outside of meeting them here. I love the relationship of the triplets and their friend, Harper. I really hope the next novel is from Harper’s POV, but I don’t want the obvious love choice for her. I loved the way the whole group, soulmates included, rallied around both Olive and Bax when it was needed.
The buildup of Olive and Bax’s relationship, however, was a little too slow for me. I wanted them both to act like grownups and move it along. In that regard, I felt like Harper trying to give them a nudge. There was a lot of flirting and innuendo, but then they would second-guess themselves and it was back to step one.
Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
Roommates and their proximity is one of those tropes that I forget that I love. I love how it turns acquaintances to friends to more in short span of time. This is the story of the third Maxwell sister, Olive. She is bookish and a little set in her ways so when she moves into her tattooed, bike riding Angel friend Bax's apartment, her routines get flipped a little. It was steamy and fun and filled with characters that we have loved for three books. It's such a great ride for a reader who wants to start with a little fun paranormal, but doesn't want to go full alien vampire.
I freaking love this series! I've been eagerly awaiting this installment & it didn't disappoint.
Baxter is so different from Linc & Damien from the first two books that it keeps the storyline from getting stale. As gruff and distant as Baxter is in the first two books, we see a different side to him with his dad and his art and his own struggles. Olive is so relatable being a rule follower and I love that she was able to step outside of her comfort zone with her list. She finally found her voice & I think that's a message a lot of people need to hear.
I hope this series isn't finished. I'm desperate for a Harper/Adrian story!
Not your crushes cauldron was a pretty good story. I really enjoyed Olive and her siblings and her best friend. I thought the relationship was really special and important to have and to show different ways that they played into one another and helped add funny banter and make fun situations happen. I thought that Bax why a fun male lead. He was very broody, but also had a super big soft spot for Olive and it made you smile. Especially, when he had convinced himself to follow through with her crazy ideas and you know that he was truly doing it out of his deepening feelings for her, and it made you as a reader just want them to be so happy together. I found that while Bax and Olive were working together through her checklist that they both helped each other gain a better understanding of themselves as people and what they can do and how they can be seen to others and how important that is to show ones true self and how important that is.
The reason I am rating it how I am is because I wasn’t very motivated to read the story. I was very easily sidetracked away from the book each time I started to read it. It didn’t really keep my attention like I expected it to and that is the main reason of why it’s not getting anything higher than what it is. The overall story itself is good, but just lacked being able to hold on to my attention for a long period of time.
Ms Asher is a new to me author and I picked this book up off of Net Galley as the blurb sounded interesting and I was not disappointed.
Olive and Bax are fun characters on their own and I loved the chemistry between them from the beginning. Add in a great secondary cast of family and friends, plus a natural conflict and meddling trouble makers and this is a winner
My one “complaint” if you can call it that, is that this standalone is very much part of a series. Having not read the first two books, there were issues that I felt like I didn’t know enough about. This book is enjoyable on its own, but I definitely recommend people not repeat my mistake and start at the beginning of the series.
So I requested this book from NetGalley without knowing that it was part of a series but thankfully it worked out well as a standalone!
I loved all the different quirky characters that were in this book! This book made me laugh, smile and just feel good all around. I needed a light heartwarming book to read and I’m so glad that I chose this book to do it! Now that I’ve finished this book, I am definitely looking into reading the rest of this series!!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC i exchange for an honest review!
Not Your Crush’s Cauldron is the third book of the Supernatural Singles series of interconnected standalones. This is my first book by this author and I can’t wait to go back and read the first two books in this series. This was a hilarious, sweet, spicy and feel good read that will leave your heart happy! Olive assigns her students to make a list of things to push them out of their comfort zones. She decides she is going to do the same and ends up with her very own guardian angel. Bax is not only Olive’s guardian angel but he is also her friend and roommate. They don’t know that they’ve both been attracted to the other and soon things heat up. Poor Bax must keep Olive out of trouble while trying not to fall in love with her. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved reading this story. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and I was invested in these two getting their HEA!
This was a sweet of somewhat predictable read. Although this had some fun elements there was not a lot of tension/ fizzy chemistry between the two leads. It was cute enough but not the best in the series. 3 🌟
I have been eagerly waiting to read Bax and Olives story and it did not disappoint.
The majority of this book revolves around Olive trying to get out of her comfort zone and be bigger and bolder. To try things that she's always been afraid to try. And Bax is a long for the journey to help her in any way he can.
I really loved the fact that it goes from building a true friendship between the two of them to a deep emotional relationship. I loved the relationship between the two of them.
The only thing I felt was really missing was getting to see Olive use her magic. It was there. Just not really that much of it .In the previous stories dealing with her sisters and their relationships, you did get to see more of the magic and the development of their talents. I felt like that was slightly missing in this. But that does not take away any of the enjoyment I had while reading this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Each book in this series has gotten better and better and this one is no exception. I love Olive and Bax. I can’t count the number of times I laughed out loud reading this book and for that I always rate five stars. Not many authors can keep a series going this strongly but I would read these books over and over again!
This was so cute!! What a fun magical read for spooky season. I felt like the characters really complimented each other and it was so easy to root for them. I felt like I was having the best time with this one!
This feels more like a middle book, rather than a series finale. That’s not a bad thing, but this is a much quieter book with lower stakes and almost zero action - a definite departure from the rest of the series. Very enjoyable, but didn’t rock my world.
I received a copy of this book from St. Martin’s Griffin.
Take a walk on the wild side as this series continues with Baxter and Olive’s love story. This is a wonderful and fun story. The characters are delightful and will give you plenty to laugh about. The plot is interesting and easy to understand. The dialogue and choice of words is unique and interesting. Readers will love this page turning story as they enjoy the fantasy of watching Olive and Baxter fall in love.
I really enjoyed the first two books in the Supernatural Singles series, which followed two of the other Maxwell triplets finding their way in the magical world to love. If you read the earlier two, each of which can be read as a standalone, you’ll see lots of familiar faces and get a glimpse of the prior couples - you’ll also have an idea of who Olive (the last Maxwell witch triplets) love interest is (Bax).
Having read the first two books, I was eager to see Olive and Bax’s story play out. They definitely intrigued me with their earlier interactions and I love a roomie romance. Unfortunately for me, while I really wanted to enjoy this one as much as the earlier books - this book and I just weren’t clicking. Having heard from others how much they enjoyed this one, I think it’s just a me thing. Full disclosure, I’m not a big friends to lovers trope fan, it’s just not my jam generally.
Ultimately while it was a cute paranormal romcom, I wasn’t as invested in the story and mainstream as I would have liked. This one felt like it had the least magical elements of the series, which I think was part of the reason it wasn’t a favorite for me. I wanted more magical / supernatural elements other than knowing their character designations 🤷🏼♀️
I think fans of the series and author and the friends to lovers trope especially will still really enjoy this one. For myself, while this wasn’t a perfect fit I still look forward to seeing what the author writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martins Press for the opportunity to read an early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and freely offered.

<b>Description:</b>
<b>Olive Maxwell</b> much prefers teaching about the Supernatural world to taking part in it and leaves the magical shenanigans to her two sisters. After assigning her college students a project designed to nudge them outside their comfort zones, Olive realizes she’s never once stepped a toe out of her own . . . and it’s about time that changed. Her first trip into the unknown? Moving in with her longtime crush and friend . . . tattooed, motorcycle-riding, and pleasantly pierced Baxter Donovan.
<b>Baxter Donovan</b>, Guardian Angel not-so-extraordinaire, has acquired so many black marks on his record it looks like a Scantron test. He’s been given one last chance to keep his Guardian wings—a high-profile Assignment he knows all too well. Olive is usually as low-risk as it gets. Hell, she wrote the safety manual. But something landed her on the Guardian Angel Affairs radar, and he guesses it has something to do with the heart-pounding stunts she’s determined to check off her Dare I Docket list. Keeping Olive out of trouble is about to be his toughest Assignment. He’s at real risk of shattering the only Guardian Angel code of conduct rule he’s yet to break: Don’t fall in love with your Assignment. And he isn’t so sure that’s a bad thing.
<b>If love doesn’t play by the rules, why should they?</b>
I absolutely LOVE this series and all the characters. This book, the third in the series, was about Olive -the youngest Maxwell sister and her guardian angel, Baxter. As a Catholic I believe in guardian angels, so this storyline was especially interesting to me. Is it possible for an angel to fall in love? This book had me believing so and rooting for him. Spicy and sweet!! Highly recommended especially if you love witchy romances with a supernatural element.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the chance to read this book for a honest review. All thoughts are my own.
I loved the first two books in this series Not the Witch You Wed and Not Your Ex's Hexes. They were pure magic! I almost did a back flip when I saw April Asher had a new book coming out in the series. I mean the first two books were fabulous. I so wanted to love this one. I thought I would, sadly this was my least favorite book out of the three. It is still a good book and a worthwhile read, but it failed to cast a spell on me in the same way the first two books in the series did. We can't love them all, but I did like this one!
Olive Maxwell prefers teaching about the supernatural world rather than participating in it. After giving her students an assignment, which entails stepping out of their comfort zone, she decides to do that same and makes a list of things that will take her out of her comfort zone.
Bax Donovan is a guardian angel who has a not-so-great record. After inviting Olive to be his roommate, he is assigned to be Olive's guardian angel. Keeping Olive out of trouble becomes his priority.
So, I say it every time it is all about the journey and this was an enjoyable one. I enjoyed how the characters complimented each other. Opposites do, as they say, attract. I enjoyed Bax's personality. He is social, witty, and handsome to boot. He is a little bit of a bad boy who has broken a few rules, but his heart is in the right place. Olive plays it safe; she likes to sit back and watch things happen. They play off each other nicely.
This book felt a little slower than the first two books. For me, it was lacking in drama. Yes, this book does have some drama, but it didn't feel as dramatic as the drama in the other books (I hope that makes sense). The other two also have a sense of danger which this book did not have. But I enjoyed that the gang was back. It was nice seeing Olive's sisters and the men in their lives. They have a great group of friends who tease and joke but also care and have each other’s backs.
I put this in my liked didn't love category. But one thing I do like about this series is that the characters are dealing with real life issues even if they are supernatural. In this book it was trying new things, pushing yourself and being more confident. Plus, there is romance and steamy scenes.
I enjoy how April Asher writes. I care about her likeable and charming characters and their plight. I can't help but root for them. Every one of her main characters has put a smile on my face.
A charming supernatural romance.
Not your crush’s cauldron is a fun conclusion to the supernatural triad. Following the last of the Maxwell sisters, this book gives a fun twist on a bucket list. I love a roommates to lovers trope, however, this book adds in a few other situations that make it more than just that. While it wasn’t my favorite Maxwell Sister book, I did still enjoy reading it, and honestly hope to see more of the Maxwells, and maybe Harper too
3.5 Stars
Things I loved about this book:
•Bax was completely gone for Olive
•It was really fun to see the prior couples in this book, and we kind of get a vibe that there might be a fourth book??
• Found Family is a huge proponent in this book and series, finding a partner that not only loves you but supports you in all things
•All about making what makes you happy and priority!
Things I personally struggled with:
•Olive was clueless and it almost got to be obnoxious
•Bax, a literal Angel, would constantly call Olive Angel. This became confusing for me as a reader.
Will I read the next book, absolutely!
Loved this!
It was great to go back into this world. I enjoy all the supernatural creatures plus magic!
This time around we focus on the youngest sister Olive. I connected with her a lot since I too need to push myself out of my comfort zones every now and then. Olive’s personal journey was great to read about. She’s also a fun character. Bax was a nice romantic lead. His journey is interesting but perhaps a bit overshadowed by Olive’s. I did like them together and thought they had good chemistry. The slow burn was definitely worth the wait.
Overall a fun witchy time.
