ARC REVIEW
Resilient
By Brooke Wells
Publishing Date: 1/16/24
Brooke is a professional crossfit athlete who dislocated her elbow while the world was watching in 2021 at the cross fit games. This is her story detailing how she made her comeback to the crossfit games.
Now if this was a normal person trying go get their strength back after surgery, I would say they rushed it but considering this is her LIFE/profession...I totally get the urgency to get back to competing.
I am not someone who does crossfit, but I'm super intrigued by it and anxiously await the documentary that is released every year.
In a small way, I can understand what Brooke was feeling. I lost 105 pounds naturally by diet and exercise and fell in love with fitness. I became a runner and put myself through strenuous workouts because I COULD. The 265 pound version of me could not. In May of 2020, 2 months after hitting 100 pounds down, I herniated and tore 2 vertebrae discs in my lumbar, putting a hault to any physical activity. It killed me....mentally and physically. I am active again but nowhere even close to the level I used to train at pre back Injury. I have chronic pain and even need to take painkillers frequently to get through a workday.
So @brookewellss .....I commend you and admire your strength. I understand that fear you felt.
You are a force.
Thanks for telling your story!
I recommend you read this one in January!
A big thanks to @stmartinspress for the physical arc and @netgalley for the e arc as well!
Book review on Resilient by Brooke Wells
Thank you so much @netgalley and @stmartinspress for this early release.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I know nothing about crossfit, but I really loved reading about Brooke's world and how she came back from a horrific injury.
She was competing and her elbow dislocated in front of tons of folks. Yikes!
She goes through everything that happened to her then, and after the injury and then her surgery and her climb to come back and compete again.
What a fierce competitor she is! I loved hearing from an elite athlete and their doubts and what it takes for them to get to the top and stay at the top and get back!
I admire anyone that has that dedication and work ethic.
You will want to grab this when it comes out, on January 16, 2024.
I think I read this one on my flight to Italy, in between my four movies!

I have always been a fan of Brooke Wells, but this book has made me a bigger fan. I’m a sucker for a comeback story, and this one is definitely phenomenal. Such tenacity, it’s inspiring. Definitely a motivating book that makes me want to try harder, do better, and not take life for granted.
Brooke Wells' story is incredible. Having been loosely interested in CrossFit, I decided to pick up this book as part of a goal to read more nonfiction and I was captivated from the first page. Wells' story of resilience and courage is a lesson not just for athletes, but for all walks of life. I was rooting for her from the beginning, and I'm a true fan now. Absolutely recommend!
I am not really into the Crossfit world but I do love a comeback story, especially one women-centered and this one did not disappoint. While my eyes glazed over the Crossfit terminology the heart of the story was her comeback, the strugglers and the mindset of it all. She's a fascinating woman and her determination was very inspiring! You don't have to be into sports/workouts/Crossfit to understand but you might appreciate it more if you are. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One thing I love about advanced reader copies (ARCs) is they tend to take me out of my comfort zone as a reader. Usually when I pick up a book, I’ve seen it reviewed already. With ARCs I go in blind, and so I did with “Resilient” by Brooke Wells, a memoir of her comeback to cross fit. Brooke tells her inspirational story engagingly, and as someone who knows nothing about cross fit I found the book to still be accessible. This story of “resilience” doesn’t pretend to be something it is not. It’s the story of an athlete’s comeback, with more of a focus on an athletic mindset and training than mental health care. I ended up enjoying the memoir, but I think it’s important to recognize the privilege of gaining resilience in the face of a sport’s injury in contrast to the many other ways people unfortunately earn the trait resilient. Still Brooke Wells is certainly resilient, and I recommend her memoir out 1/16/24!
As an athlete who does CrossFit as part of my fitness regimen, I have been intrigued by the CrossFit culture for years. The athletes I work out next to in the gym are some of the toughest people I know. Brooke Wells, a top CrossFit athlete, made a name for herself at age 19 by winning a competition. Resilient is the story of a horrendous injury and her journey back to the top of her sport. Her determination to return to competition after what should have been a career-ending injury was admirable. This is a quick read--I found myself having difficulty putting it down! Although there is a lot of CrossFit terminology, even non-athletes will find plenty of inspiration in her story. I wish her the best of luck going forward!
I have enjoyed following Brooke Wells CrossFit career so hearing her story first hand was awesome. She describes what she went through and the strength needed mentally to keep pushing through.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

DAMN. I got into spectating CrossFit because of my wife and I’ve been a fan of competitors like Dani Speegle ever since. But this story, Brooke Wells’ story - it’s a tremendously beautiful example of how so much of athleticism is mental toughness. So much of being an athlete is staring your fears square in the face and challenging them anyway. Brooke Wells has a new fan today, and I have a newfound respect for just what it takes to get on the CrossFit podium. [Also - the foreword in this book is phenomenal. I have SO much more respect for NOBULL after learning more about their story via this foreword.] Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance copy.
