One of my most anticipated reads of the year completely delivered!
Alice Feeny aka the queen of twists is back with a mystery that takes on a missing child, a murder 20 years later and the female relationships involved.
I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was wonderful. I loved the unique characters and how the story was told alternating between the past and present.
The twist was fun and this was a book I didn't want to put down until the very end.
Loved how everything came together in the end.
But I didn't like how the story was set up.
The narrative begins with a gripping abduction, which immediately seizes my attention. However, it then shifts to 20 years later, where we are introduced to the intense family drama between Edith and her children, accompanied by the emergence of a murder at Edith's nursing home. I must confess that neither Edith's familial drama nor the murder itself managed to captivate me entirely. My primary fixation remained on unraveling the mystery surrounding the child's abduction. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the very end that we were finally given any answers.
Not to mention, I had a hard time differentiating between the characters while listening to the audiobook. The voices sounded too similar.
Overall, good enough to read but not my favorite by this author.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Alice Feeney, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
Audible narration on this one was perfect! I thought the narrators did a wonderful job being able to differentiate characters and their personalities. I was engaged the whole time and devoured this book fast!
The story itself was also great. I was so confused trying to figure it all out and at the end when it comes together so perfectly I was super happy with what the Author did there! 4 solid stars from me!
I am the BIGGEST fan of Alice Feeney. I was counting days until this book came out. I was so happy to see that I was given an ALC from Netgalley. I started the book right away! I am so bummed to report that I didn't enjoy the audiobook. The long list of characters made this audiobook so confusing. I had to stop after a few chapters. I wanted to really enjoy this book and understand the plot. I waited to purchase a physical copy and I am so happy I did. I am loving every second! The narration was great, just not my choice for this specific book.
Y'all know those little twisty things that closes the bag your bread comes in? This book has more twists than that! Just when you think you know what's going on...nope, you're wrong. And then you're wrong again! This book will surprise you over and over. It is fabulous. The writing is typical for Alice Feeney - clever, easy to follow, quick to read. I highly recommend this book!
"Good Bad Girl" by Alice Feeney is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Feeney, known for her skill in crafting mind-bending narratives, delivers yet another page-turner that will leave readers questioning everything they think they know.
The story is told from four different characters' point of view. Each has their own story to tell. It is a slow-burn novel; however, the story picks up as each character's timeline starts to intersect. Things will begin to make more sense. The character development in "Good Bad Girl" is top-notch. They are complex and flawed characters, and their inner turmoil is palpable. Feeney delves into the psychology of her characters, making their motivations and actions all the more intriguing. The supporting cast is equally well-drawn, each character harboring their secrets and motivations.
What truly sets this book apart is its skillful use of psychological tension. Feeney masterfully manipulates the reader's perceptions, making you question the truth at every turn. You'll find yourself constantly reevaluating your assumptions, and just when you think you've figured it all out, another twist throws you off balance. It's worth the read.
The story was narrated by Katherine Press; and Stephanie Racine. Their voices were different, and the pace of reading was average. The tone they read is on par with each character and what is happening to them at the time. It was realistic.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for letting me listen to this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
All the women in this book are connected but it's so fun figuring out just how!
The plot is twisty with multiple story lines and POV's converging into one story near the end, you will be wondering who did the murder, who did the kidnapping, and which woman was the worst mother.
I enjoyed this one a lot, It was my second by this author and it did not disappoint. I listened to the audiobook and I am pretty picky but did like this narrator. It did take me a while to fully understand whose perspective it was speaking from and how the characters were intertwined but it was worth hanging in there to figure it out. Finished this one in about 24 hours - didn’t want to put it down!
Book: Good Bad Girl
Author: Alice Feeney
Format: Audiobook
Genre: Thriller, Crime/Mystery
Places Featured: London, England, United Kingdom
Review Score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 ½ stars rounded up)
Review: Good Bad Girl is the story of four women–Edith is an elderly woman in a nursing home, Patience is working at the nursing home while trying to figure out life, Frankie is a nurse at a prison with an estranged daughter, and Clio is a therapist living in a pink house. As the book progresses, we slowly learn more about each woman and how their lives are linked. While the book is labeled as a thriller (and I really enjoyed Feeney’s Rock, Paper Scissors), the thrilling part was missing for me. It’s just an interesting story with a “twist.” The narrators are great, but I do still wonder if this is one of those books that would have been better if I had to actually turn the pages.
This is a story about family lost & found.
I liked this one! I thought that the number of building twists might lead to a convoluted story- but it actually worked well! The characters weren’t likable, but they were compelled & I found myself feeling hopeful for them.
Thank you so much @netgalley & @macmillan.audio for the ALC of this twisty little number.
I could not pass up the chance to review Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney! Thank you so much @netgalley for access to this gem! It kept me guessing and was a super fun read. 20 years after a child was taken from her stroller, someone is killed in a nursing home. We know that they’re linked, but the reader gets to see things unfold. We meet Edith, whose daughter Clio tricked her into moving into that same nursing home. Multiple POV, each one riveting. I could not recommend this enough - because what good girl hasn’t been forced to do bad things?
Excellent narration!
Just got done filming my Youtube review for this book. It was my most anticipated read of 2023 and sadly it just didn't feel like a Feeney novel. It is not a BAD book by any means, it just doesn't have the Feeney psychological thriller charm. Is more of a family suspense novel and I just wasn't hooked :( It didn't feel like anything special or new. Thank you so much to Macmillian audio and Netgalley for the chance to listen and review Good Bad Girl!
Good Bad Girl was a audiobook narrated by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine. It was 9 hours and 21 minutes long. The narrators were great but the story wasn’t for me.
I was literally confused the first half and couldn’t keep it straight. I didn’t care for any of the characters and therefore had to make myself finish. It was a mediocre novel for me. Yep, that was my opinion.
Thanks Macmillan Audio via NetGalley.
I wanted to love this audiobook so much but it was so confusing to follow on audio. I ended up buying a physical copy once it came out because I just couldn’t keep up. If I had sat and done nothing but listen to it, I probably could have followed it but part of the role of audiobooks for me is being able to listen on the go. It jumped around so much that it made it difficult to follow and enjoyable to listen to. I’m not a new audiobook listener either, I’ve probably listened to 300+ audiobooks over the last 5 years but this is one of the few that I ultimately had to put down and get a physical copy. Nothing against the story or the narrator, just the story wasn’t designed for audio in my opinion. I used it to follow along with the physical copy I purchased.
The book itself once I got a hard copy was twisty and interesting. I really liked the storyline and it still had some darker themes that Alice feeney is known for, but it was good and one I will recommend in my library.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
Feeney never disappoints! This book is a slowly unraveling tale of family drama until the very end when the hits just keep coming as it all falls into place! I loved the characters and how complex the story was! I love how Feeney connects characters and their complex relationships. It’s a huge reason she’s one of my favorite authors! This one was reminiscent of Rock Paper Scissors in the pace and how the end just leaves you thinking back on the rest of the book! Now begins the long wait until her next book comes out!
When a recent murder in a care home is linked to a baby's kidnapping two decades earlier, the police have a difficult time sorting out the connection. The investigation is made more complicated by the fact that not everyone is telling the truth...... even about their own identity.
I struggled a little bit to keep the characters straight. I had to go back and restart chapters a couple times to keep things straight. This was probably due in large part to the fact that the three main characters were female. Ironically, that's something I really enjoyed about this book; I loved the fact that the main characters were women and the story rooted in a romance. This book definitely passes the Bechdel test!
Overall, while a little confusing at times, I really enjoyed it! Definitely my favorite of the last couple by this author!
This book kept my interest and the mystery didn’t lag or get boring. I figured out that Patience/Nellie was Cleo’s missing baby Eleanor. I found the descriptions of what the jail was like a little far fetched. I’ve never heard of computers in inmates’ cells. Usually they can only access them in a common room or a library.
I wasn’t expecting Frankie to be Nellie’s sister. We get a little of the back story of how Cleo got pregnant at 16 with Frankie and had to give her up. I thought it was nice that Nellie, Frankie and Cleo have a relationship at the end of the book. I don’t know how I feel about them getting away with killing Joy even if it was an accident. They should have called the police.
A trust no one domestic thriller involving kidnapping, murder and so many secrets!
Good Bad Girl is definitely one of those plots that you have to just go with, despite feeling confused, and let the pieces come together as the story unfolds. The plot is twisty and follows multiple perspectives and timelines. I enjoyed how Fenney cleverly connects the characters. There are lots of secrets, family drama and some darker thought-provoking themes involving the elderly and postpartum depression.
This is a slower moving story but I really appreciated how Fenney highlighted each main character being both good and bad. The mother-daughter relationships were tumultuous, wrought with emotion and built on far reaching mistakes.
The audio had two amazing narrators but I definitely would have benefitted from having a different narrator for each main character because the voices were quite similar and it wasn’t always easy to distinguish between the characters. Still, a fun & attention grabbing listen/read.
Good Bad Girl is classic Alice Feeney! It is full of twists and turns that you won't see coming. I highly recommend all of her novels. Good Bad Girl also made for a great audiobook!
This was a twisty mystery about a missing baby. Although it kept my attention throughout, the characters got muddled in my mind until the end. I enjoyed the ending and the audiobook narrator! Bonus points for describing a prison librarian's love for books!
