Based on reading many of Feeney's past books, I thought this one would be more of a thriller. This story is really about mothers and daughters and how complicated those relationships can be. It talked about postpartum depression and what it means to be a good mother. It was more of a domestic drama that had a lot of backstory and connections. I thought the book was slow but it did pick up after the halfway point. There were a lot of characters that were unclearly connected, and the book being written in third person caused it to feel disjointed. This wasn't my favorite Feeney novel but I did enjoy the listen. The narrator spoke slowly, so I bumped the speed up a little bit. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC of the audiobook version of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an easy 5 star.Alice Feeney has become my favorite thriller writer. This was fast paced and still heartfelt and I could not stop once I began. I had to know how it ended with thrills and heart I loved every minute!
SO SO SO GOOD. Alice Feeney is top tier when it comes to mystery writing and this novel did not disappoint. One of my favorite stories she's written to date.
I was left guessing throughout the entire story and did not see the twists coming. Absolutely will recommend to my fellow book worms.
The audiobook reading was wonderful and the narrator did a 5 star job.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ALC. I got half way through and just wasn't into it so i DNF. The narrators were good but i just kept getting confused while listening. Alot of characters and trying to keep story lines straight. I am going to try and read this as a physical book and see if that helps. Overall I love Alice Feeney but this just didn't do it for me.
This book was fantastic! I loved the twists and turns that slowly revealed themselves. I never would have guessed the ending, but it was all tied up nicely and the reader was left with a happy ending.
Audio Narrator was awesome. Book was well paced. Could not put it down. Can't wait for her next Mystery-thriller.
Told in dual timelines and multiple POV's this book was a little hard to follow at first. Even as I felt like I had a grip on the characters and timelines, the story felt like it was all over the place for me. As a result I found myself trying to figure out how everything fits together rather than just listening to and enjoying the story. Everything does come together in the end, and while I guessed some twists, others I didn't - especially the final twist.
This is the first book that I've read from Alice Feeney, and although this one didn't completely knock my socks off, I enjoy her writing style and I look forward to digging into her backlist.
Thank you to @netgalley @macmillan.audio and @flatiron_books for the gifted copy of this book.
This review was tough to write because 1. I love Alice Feeney and 2. I couldn’t remember this book very well even though I read it a few weeks ago which tells me it’s not Feeney’s normal type of book which I constantly think about. I couldn’t connect with the characters very well and really found my mind wandering during this. Part of it could be that I had trouble keeping track of who’s who. I alternated between reading and listening and enjoyed the narrators.
I love a twisty, turning kind of story where you think your characters are far apart and yet, as the story spirals the connections come together in a clever way. There were some surprises, and some easily predicted moments, but overall I was riveted.
Three suspects, two murders, and one victim.
Twenty years ago a baby was stolen from a stroller. Present day a woman is murdered in a nursing home. Both crimes are linked, and one girl is the key to both mysteries. Edith is 80 years old and hates living in the nursing home. Patience cares for and has befriended Edith. Edith's daughter Clio won't speak to her. And then there's Frankie, the prison librarian.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration was fantastic. I loved being in the characters' heads and the foreshadowing moments were read with feeling.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the early audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
New Alice Feeney novel kept me on my toes for sure. I was a little confused listening to the audiobook since the timeline bounced around. The twists were satisfying as is typical Alice Feeney. I enjoyed the short chapters. I’m a fan of books that introduce multiple characters who you don’t know the connection until you get farther along reading, which was the case here. This book was different than her previous books but still kept me interested. Thanks to NetGalley for an early copy of the audiobook for review.
Whew, this was a heck of a ride. This is a multiple POV story, with multiple timelines. It flips back and forth between present day and a traumatic event that happened, giving you bits and pieces to try and put the puzzle together. I wanted to know what happened in moth timelines, so I didn’t ever stall out.
The narrator did a wonderful job, especially with changing up the accents just slightly to hear a difference.
Cleo is a successful therapist and can help others work on fixing themselves. She just can’t fix herself. Her daughter was stolen from the carriage while at the grocery store. As she’s meeting with a new client, she gets a call that her mother is missing from the care home. What else could go wrong?
Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney: ⭐⭐⭐🐞
Format: ALC from MacMillan Audio and NetGalley
I SCREAMED when I got this ALC from NetGalley and MacMillan Audio! Alice Feeney has been one of my favorite authors since I started reading again, and her bestsellers Rock Paper Scissors, His & Hers, and Daisy Darker are among my favorite mysteries of all time.
Good Bad Girl is the latest from Queen Feeney, a story weaving the lives of four women together, women who believe they are good people who just might have done a bad thing or two in their day. The intersection of their timelines is complex and masterful. I really enjoyed watching them come together at different points in the story!
Good Bad Girl cannot unseat Rock Paper Scissors from my personal top spot- in my opinion, the ending leaves a few too many loose ends. But I will always auto-buy Alice Feeney and will be on the lookout for her next books! Narrators Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine did a bang up job as always, I love their work. I recommend this book to my mystery reading friends!
Thank you to MacMillan Audio for the ALC. Good Bad Girl will be published next week on August 29th 🐞
Good Bad Girl is an enthralling thriller that had me from the first chapter. I was intrigued by the multiple narrators Feeney employs as well as the exploration of motherhood key to most of the action. Unlike the face-paced action I have come to appreciate in Feeney's storytelling, this one takes it's time and is much more of a character driven story. If you need the plot to be clearly moving and don't particularly enjoy feeling confused this one may not be a favorite for you. But I loved it! I found the multiple twists at the end well worth any frustration in reading and Alice Feeney remains one of my favorite writers in the thriller genre.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for early access to the audiobook in exchange for this review. I enjoyed the audio presentation and usually prefer to listen to books in this genre. However, this one left me wanting a printed text to help me follow and process what was happening, not to mention reread sections after I finished. There is a lot I missed I'd like to go back and trace.
ARC Audiobook Review..
This story was super confusing. I feel reading the book would be less confusing, hopefully… The narrators should of used different voices for the characters. Especially when it was multi pov. I honestly couldn’t tell most of the time that it was two narrators..
The story had me feeling neutral. I didn’t love it, nor hate it.
I really wanted to love this audiobook. The synopsis of the story made me really intrigued. Kind of bummed.
Thank you Netgalley, Macmillan and Alice Feeney for the opportunity to listen to the audio and give my honest opinion
I am a huge Alice Feeney fan, but this one wasn't one of my favorites of hers. I didn't feel like I was ever fully invested in the plot, characters or outcome like I was in previous books. I thought there were a lot of characters to keep track of which may have fed in to that feeling. There were also a lot of different storylines to keep track of that eventually connected in the end, but I felt like the story was jumping around at times. Still, I liked how Feeney tied everything together in the end without leaving any loose ends. To be fair, this may also not have been the best time of my life to read this book about bad mothers and poor mother-daughter relationships. Regardless, I am still a huge Alice Feeney fan and I will continue to read everything she writes!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc audiobook!
I received this advanced copy from the publisher through net galley. The book had me in pins and needles. Twists and turns everywhere. Alice feeney does it again!
Another great thriller by Alice Feeney! I was hooked from the beginning, couldn't stop listening, and the classic Alice Feeney twist at the end had my jaw on the floor. Solid 5 stars and will continue to recommend to anyone willing to listen!
Alice Feeny crafts such clever twists. The whole time I was reading I thought I had figured it out!
I went into it expecting a thriller like Rock, Paper, Scissors (which I loved!) but it felt more like a suspenseful mystery. With that said - I thoroughly enjoyed this story and wanted to see how it unraveled!
The audio was really well done, the one issue I had was that the voices for the different POV’s were so similar that I got confused and needed to pause to make sure whose POV I was following.
3.5⭐
Genre ~ domestic drama
Publication date ~ August 29, 2023
Page Count ~ 310
Audio length ~ 9 hours 21 minutes
Narrators ~ Katherine Press, Stephanie Racine
POV ~ multiple 3rd
Featuring ~ dual timeline, kidnapping, murder, secrets, lies, short chapters
The prologue is intriguing with a baby stolen from her stroller in the supermarket.
Our main characters are:
Frankie~ works in a prison library, teenage daughter missing
Patience ~ works at Edith's care facility
Clio ~ therapist, mother of kidnapped baby
Edith ~mother of Clio
There's mother/daughter drama, some twists and a dog named, Dickens. Slow moving and confusing for quite a bit for me, but eventually we get to the meat of the story and it chugged along at a quicker clip. Overall, not my favorite, but interesting enough.
Narration notes:
They both did an okay job, but there wasn't that much distinction between them.
Alice Feeney’s knack for delivering clever twists drew me in once again with “Good Bad Girl.” I am happy to say that I was not left disappointed. This book offered a captivating story that kept me entertained for hours.
For me, Feeney shines brightest when she employs multiple perspectives to tell a story, a technique present in “Good Bad Girl.” However, the similarity in voices among these perspectives lead to a few moments of confusion, hence my four stars.
If you like this book, I highly recommend you check out Feeney’s other works, especially “Rock Paper Scissors” and “His & Hers,” which were five-star reads for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan for this ARC!
