I feel like each Alice Feeney book I read just keeps getting better and a bit more twisted. I once again think I may have it somewhat figured out and I feel like I took a spin on a carnival ride when the full plot reveals itself, because I didn’t know fully what was going on. I never do!
There are several female characters that you follow in this book and I did find it took me a little bit to figure out who was who. But once I had that down, the story got good! It is listed as Mystery and Thriller, however I’m not sure thriller is the right category. Someone is murdered, but it’s a minor plot point and easy to forget about. Even not being a thriller I still give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars
Twenty years ago, a baby was stolen from a stroller at a grocery store. The baby was never found. Now a woman has been murdered in a care home and those two events are linked in an unexpected way. Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she’s planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning messes and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything. Edith’s own daughter, Clio, wants nothing to do with her. With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.
This book kept me guessing from the first chapter, all the way to the end. The story went back and forth between past and present, and told in the various voices of Edith, Clio, Patience, and Frankie. There were not only different POV's, but also you had multiple mysteries to solve. If the baby was never found, is she someone that is in the story now, and if so, who? Who killed the patient in the nursing home? Who killed the nursing home manager? What secret is Frankie hiding? Who is Patience really? So many questions, and every time you grab onto a thread and start to pull, they switch POV's and change the subject on you. If the book wasn't so good, I would have gotten quite frustrated, but as it was, I was on the edge of my seat. The narrators did an excellent job with the voices and making everyone come to life in the audiobook version of this. If you are a fan of twisty thrillers that will keep you guessing, then you need to check this one out!
Another great thriller by Alice Feeney. This is story about motherhood. It includes grandmother, mother and daughters. Different mother react different in different situation but they all just want to safe their child. There is twist and another twist but at the end everything is connected together.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Good Bad Girl" by Alice Feeney! It's a compelling story that follows four interconnected women with strong elements of suspense and mystery tied in.
After learning that she has been adopted, Patience is told she must wait until she is 18 to discover who her real father is. When her mother fails to share this information on her 18th birthday, Patience flees the house boat she has resided in her entire life. Edith has been placed in an expensive care home by her adult children, against her will. Patience becomes an employee of the care home and the two develop a deep bond.
The author does a wonderful job painting an intimate story for each character that makes you feel connected to each woman, and never lost on who is who. I would recommend Feeney's work to anyone looking for an emotional suspense with unexpected twists!
Thank you to Flatiron Books and Alice Feeney for providing an ARC for my honest feedback.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house, the narrator and the author for the opportunity to listen to an advance reader copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This author writes a good book, lots of twists and turns. I like the way the story was told, the narrator did a good job and I did not find it diffcult to follow. Her tone and cadence were good and enjoyable to listen to. This is a great summer read.
This book centers on seveeral main characters, Edith, an elderly woman who has beenn tricked into a nursing home, Patience, her care worker; Frankie, a prison librarian and Clio, Edith's daughter. I found each of their stories equally compelling and enjoyed trying to put these people together and see where the story would lead. The one thing you should know about this book is don't trust anyone. Great ending and loved the twists.
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Alice Feeney for the advanced listening copy of Good Bad Girl.
I’m a big fan of Alice Feeney, but this book seemed to be missing a little something. There was a slight twist at the end, but nothing that left me in awe.
The story starts off with dealing with an abduction, and also deals with a murder in a nursing home. There weren’t as many twists and surprises that I’m used to from Alice Feeney. Both narrators did a wonderful job, and it was a quick read.
Confusion. That's what I was feeling throughout this book.
The first chapter was intriguing; then when the POVs started changing I was lost. Who is who?
The narrator had the same tone for all the separate characters and therefore I could not distinguish who was who and what was happening.
I also felt like there was no need for more than 1 mystery. The past and present mysteries, although they did get tied together in the end, really had nothing to do with each other and I didn't feel like one made sense with the other or was even really necessary to the other. What it was was a series of vague remarks and situations that were there to create suspense and brought the characters together but really added nothing to each other or the story.
I was ready to DNF 40% in from all the confusion but wanted to hold out till the end in hopes of some crazy twists. Personally wasn't worth it for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the arc.
Good Bad Girl is a story about difficult mother & daughter relationships. It starts out with a child abduction in a grocery store. Twenty years later there is a murder a nursing home. Both happen on Mother’s Day.
Edith, an elderly woman who has been put in a nursing home against her will; Patience, an employee of the nursing home; Clio, Edith's daughter and a therapist, and Frankie, a prison librarian.
We are left to figure out the dynamics of the relationships between these women and how the two events are connected.
I listened to the audiobook and I really enjoyed the narration. I liked each of the characters storylines and enjoyed all the twists and reveals. While this is not my favorite Alice Feeney book I would recommend it and will continue to read all of her books as they come out.
Thanks to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
When I read a book by Alice Feeney, I know that I am in for a very clever, gripping and twist filled ride and this book was no exception. You will need to keep your wits about you when reading this book! This book is told in an interesting fashion and along the way what seems trivial or might not make sense, will be the thing that makes the most sense in the end! Now that I have confused you, let’s start at the beginning or is it the end?????
In the past, a baby was taken from a stroller at a grocery store. It's devastating and Mother’s Day will never be the same again for several characters in this book.
The characters:
Clio, a psychologist living in a pink house, has recently put her mother, Edith, in a care home.
Edith is an eighty-year-old former department store detective. She wants out of the care home and relishes spending time with her dog, Dickens, who is brought in each day by Patience.
Patience is eighteen years old and works in the care home and sneaks Dickens into the home so Edith can spend time with her dog.
Frankie is a prison librarian who has not heard from her daughter since she ran away.
Four distinct characters, four backstories, two murders, lots of secrets, and one dog make for a thrilling, twist filled book that I could not get enough of. Alice Feeney has delivered once again! I love trying to figure things out in books, but Alice Feeney was one step ahead of me the entire time. Connections are interesting things. How one action can change so many things for so many people. What is also interesting is this book, its premise, and its characters! When things started coming together, I was shocked and amazed at how Feeney wrapped things up. So clever, so well thought out, and well written.
I listened to the audiobook and loved it. I thought the narration was fantastic!
I didn't think it could get better than Daisy Darker, but Good Bad Girl is just as twisty and surprising. A baby disappears from a buggy 20 years ago on Mother's Day. This is where it starts. Then we flash forward 20 years and meat Clio, Edith, Frankie and Patience. All of these women have a strange connection that will make sense once all the pieces fall into place. There may also have been a murder (or 2) that connects them.
Fantastic! Alice Feeney is brilliant and although you can sometimes see what's coming, she always manages to surprise you at the very end.

In true Alice Feeney fashion this was another amazingly crafted web of lies and suspense, that leaves you guessing until the last few moments of the book! I’d say it’s almost imperative that you go into it knowing zero to none about the synopsis and be able to sit through some mild confusion and maximum intrigue, as the author slyly “breadcrumbs” things that you will be shocked you didn’t notice from the beginning. I’ll leave it at that, but if you’re still apprehensive about picking up this book, allow me to give you the vibes:
✨a kidnapping
✨multiple POVs
✨dual timelines
✨mother daughter drama
✨a “who done it” mystery
✨🐞🐞🐞???
✨unreliable narrator(s)???
✨a pink house💕🏠???
✨papercut(s)???
✨a cute four-legged friend🐶🐾
✨jail???
The audiobook to this was amazing!!! I could listen to it at my desired speed of 2x and though there were only 2 narrators it felt like a “full cast” audiobook so it was very enjoyable!!!
5.00⭐️
Special thanks to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for the advanced listening copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
At the heart of Good Bad Girl is an abduction; twenty years prior, a baby was stolen from a push chair in a supermarket. In the present day, we meet our four main characters; Edith, an elderly lady who has been sent to a care home against her will, and who now believes that deaths at that care home are in fact murders; Patience, an employee of the care home and seemingly the only person who will give Edith the time of day; Clio, Edith's daughter and a therapist who is barely holding things together herself; and Frankie, a prison librarian who means never to return to her job. What relationships do these women bear to one another? And what, if any, were their roles in the abduction twenty years prior?
This was a fun, middling-stakes mystery, with a lovable cast of characters and a gripping hook. Most impressive of all (imho) was the mystery itself, and its slow resolution. I was genuinely puzzled at points and couldn't wait to piece it all together. The fact that the characters themselves were each so independently compelling meant that there was never a dull moment, even when we weren't in mystery-solving mode directly. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a stellar job of bringing each of these characters to life.
In terms of criticism, something which I've noticed reading previous books by this author is the overuse of quips. This book was no exception. Passages like "she thought it would take 30 steps to get there but it only took 27...Sometimes the truth is closer than we think" and "Frankie was wrong to trust that woman...The benefit of the doubt is rarely of real benefit to anyone" (both paraphrased) felt somewhat distracting to me. They make the book seem faux-intellectual and try-hard in a way that it's otherwise not, which did affect my listening experience. This may be a personal taste thing; some readers might love this about Feeney's writing. For me though, I felt the book would have been better without.
Regardless, this book is definitely worth a read (and you should pick up the audiobook if you can). It's not as dark as the cover might have you believe -- I'd most recommend it if you're in the mood for a mystery but don't want something super dark and/or gory. It's released August 29th!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for letting me listen to this in advance.
What happens when bad things happen to good people? Sometimes, it drives good people to do bad things. This book has it all - it started with a baby abduction and ended in a murder and secrets being exposed. Delving into the complexities of family relationships and dynamics, and the lengths others will go to in order to protect the ones they love - this story and the character motives kept me engaged and guessing the entire time.
Alice Feeney hit another homerun with this book. The character and plot development were great and the narration was excellent. I enjoyed every second of this book and highly recommend it!
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Alice Feeney for the advanced listening copy of Good Bad Girl in exchange for my honest review.
I will start by saying Alice Feeney is one of my autobuy authors, so it pains me to say that this one really just didn't do it for me. I felt like it was missing the big "OMG" reveal moment that we typically get from Feeney's novels.
Thankfully the chapters were short and the story was interesting enough that I did feel compelled to keep reading, I just definitely wanted more by the time I was done.
I will say there was one reveal right at the end that I definitely didn't see coming, it just wasn't on par with what I've personally come to expect from Feeney.
Nevertheless, I'll be anxiously awaiting her next release!
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for an audio copy of this book.
There are quite a few characters to keep track of in this book. At times I got very confused about who we were dealing with. Everyone has secrets. Sometimes bad things happen to good people and good people have to do bad things.
I wanted a bit more from the ending. It left a few things up in the air. But it was a fun ride as the mystery unfolded. A murder and an endless list of potential suspects.
I really enjoyed the voice of the narrator.
Solid mystery. I gasped once. Didn’t figure out the whole story until I finished it. Always enjoy Alice Feeney books. Look forward to the next one.
The narrator does a nice job and is easy to listen to.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher/producer for the advance copy of the audiobook.
Holy Hell Batman, what was that?
I am THE biggest Alice Feeney, fan. I can recite lines from any one of her books and yet can never predict an ending.
Each and every time, Feeney leaves my jaw on the floor and heart in my throat.
I am not a huge fan of audiobooks but if I can’t get my hands on a physical or e-book, I’ll do what I have to do to get an early peek.
I have been pending for MONTHS and then finally gave in to requesting the audio.
I did not blink once
I hung on every word
Feeney is THE thriller queen and you can not convince me otherwise.
There are many many details that I had wished I could have slowed down and enjoyed and I’m eager to get a chance to read the book. In true Feeney, fashion the twist is earth shattering and will have your head spinning right off your shoulders. I might have actually said “what in the actual DUCk, was that?”
I am yet to give any Feeney book less than 5 stars and I am not about to start now. Jury is still out but this might be my new favorite. I’ll let you know 😉
This wild little ride releases August 29, 2023 and I promise you don’t want to miss it. Pre-orders are still available!
Teaser :
Twenty years after a baby is stolen from a stroller, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow linked, and a good bad girl may be the key to discovering the truth.
Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she’s planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning messes and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything.
Edith’s own daughter, Clio, won’t speak to her. And someone new is about to knock on Clio’s door…and their intentions aren’t good.
With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.
Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things.
⭐️Review ⭐️
Such a good suspense/thriller by Alice Feeney! You’ll be drawn In right away by the kidnapping story line and things just take off from there, building characters and back stories. Told from multiple view points, you’ll get lots of information, but not quite be able to place all the pieces together until the end. Or at least I didn’t. I suspected a few things, but the twists kept coming, up until the very end! Loved it! My only negative comment would be that some things were just a bit too much of a coincidence leaving it a little unbelievable, but that being said, in my opinion that’s why we read books, to stretch our imaginations
Writing style is descriptive and easy to read .. If you’re a fan of a good thriller I’d definitely recommend!
Alice Feeny is becoming one of my favorite thriller writers.
This one explores the complex relationship of mothers and daughters. What make you a mother? What makes you a good or bad mother? After reading it made me want to call my mom just to tell her I love her.
Alice Feenley is known for the twists in her books and this story continues that. There is mone then more mystery. What happened to the baby kidnapped 20 years ago? And present day is there something sinister going on at the nursing home that Edith feels a prisoner in who suspects her frind was murdered in.. What is the connection to the missing baby?
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an advanced audiobook for review.
This was not my favorite by Feeney. It sort of felt like everything was spelled out at the start and nothing super exciting happened. Loads of other reviewers have really enjoyed this book, so if you're an existing Feeney fan, definitely still check it out!
Specific to the audio: EXCELLENT narration - both readers did a fantastic job.
