I love Alice Feeny's books, and often hold them up as the gold standard of psychological thrillers. Good Bad Girl was another winner for me, as she slowly unraveled the ties binding four women whose lives are somehow intertwined. While each woman has their own secrets, as the story unfolds, we learn how much they were truly hiding. This was a fun, intriguing story for me, and I encourage other readers to be patient in allowing the plot to unfold, as it has a solid, twisty payoff at the end!
Thank you to MacMillian Audio, NetGalley and Alice Feeney! This was my first book by Alice and I’m sure it won’t be my last.
“Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things.”
This book was full of surprises and I couldn’t stop once I started. When a baby is stolen from a supermarket right out of stroller and the truth isn’t found out until many many years later the truth is shocking. Who took her and why? A woman in a care home being murdered, but who really did it? And how the truth was revealed was an even cooler surprise.
I definitely recommend this book and it was a quick read!
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this alc.
“Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things."
I loved Alice Feeney’s previous book, Daisy Darker, and was very excited about this one. The plot revolves around three suspects, two murders, and one victim. This story is complex, told by different POVs, and it goes back and forth in time. Every chapter is told by a different character and ends with a lot of suspense, keeping me eager to read the next chapter, and the next, and the next.
Feeney develops her characters very well, exploring their relationships and the reasons why they make the choices they do. None of them are perfect, they have some unique flaws. The mother-daughter relationship is explored in all its highs and lows. And I really appreciated the puzzle the author created and how all the pieces fell into place and the mystery was solved at the end.
Her multi-layered narrative is clever and works.
The audiobook greatly narrated by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine, who transition among characters using tone, accent, and pace. They provide a very satisfying listening experience.
Good Bad Girl is a slow-burn compelling read. Full of secrets, intrigue, family drama, betrayal: this emotional novel can keep you in your toes. The writing is fluid and you will end the last page asking yourself what is good and what is bad in this reality we live in. There’s no doubt I will continue reading this author’s books.
2 murders, 3 suspects and 1 victim is what the detective kept saying. We start the novel with a kidnapping in a grocery store. Fast forward and it’s Mother’s Day in a retirement home where Edith resides in room 13, and Patience works. We also follow Frankie and Clio. This book starts out with multiple POV’s, I had to write the characters down so I could understand everyone better. Once you get the characters down, then it’s easier to follow. I enjoyed trying to figure out how everyone is connected and who the baby snatcher is. Everyone is a suspect. And although all characters have things they do that could be considered “bad”, I really liked Edith. Just when I thought I knew what the twist was, I was surprised to find it was something more.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an ARC audiobook. The voice used for Edith’s accent was amazing, the narrator did a wonderful job, I enjoyed listening to “Edith’s voice”. Both narrators did a fantastic job telling the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron for the audio ARC.
I'm sorry, but I had to DNF this one. I think I'm done with Alice Feeney. The writing here just felt overly simplistic and uninteresting to read. The story was too convoluted, every different perspective sounded the same, and I simply did not care what would happen to these people. I gave it an honest go, this just was not for me.
I have enjoyed the few Alice Feeney books that I have read or listed to so far, so was definitely interested in reading this one. As usual, there were twists that I was able to figure out and some that I wasn’t. I love that I’m always surprised by something in her novels!
This novel is about four women and how their lives become interconnected when there is a murder at a care home facility. Edith is an 80-year old woman who lives at the center, Clio is her daughter, Patience is the teen girl who works at the center, and Frankie is a librarian at a women’s prison. Each woman has an interesting storyline and it’s fun to try to figure out the murder mystery in the process of learning about the women.
I listed to the audio version of this novel and it was fantastically done! The two narrators made it easy to distinguish between which character was the focus for the chapter. Their narration styles fit the flow of each scene perfectly! I usually take awhile to get through an audiobook, but this one had me sucked in and only took 3 listening sessions.
The book felt like it took too long to wrap up at the end, which is why I’m giving it 4 stars rather than 5.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #MacMillanAudio for an audio ARC of #GoodBadGirl by #AliceFeeney in exchange for honest feedback. - 4 stars
Alice Feeney with another hit? Color me unsurprised! She's an auto-buy author for me, and Good Bad Girl solidifies that even further.
In true Feeney style, this book starts at the end. Or is it the beginning? And all throughout, you don't know how the characters are related--or if they are--or even the actual timeline of the end/beginning compared to the rest of the book. Good Bad Girl was filled with mysterious characters, who were arguably both good AND bad; lingering questions about who the worst of the characters was; no clue about whether your assumptions about the characters are correct; and an ongoing train of thought about how on earth these people could be connected.
In the end, was it worth it when the storylines came together? Yes, absolutely. I felt like one of the storylines came together sooner than I was expecting, but another was a surprise right up until the end of the book.
Overall, a solid addition to the Alice Feeney shelf and one I may re-read (as I frequently do with her books) now that I know the actual ending.
Note on the audio--this narrator is phenomenal. What a treat!
This is a review of an Advanced Readers Copy of Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review! Out August 29th!
About: Twenty years ago, a baby is stolen from its stroller in a supermarket. Present day, someone is murdered in a care home. These crimes are related and there is one person that may be the key to linking them together.
Eighty year old Edith lives in this nursing home, and a young girl Patience works there, whom Edith bonds with. Edith’s daughter Clio barely speaks to her, and Clio has problems of her own too. Someone comes knocking on her door that does not have good intentions.
The women must learn to work together because there is a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might learn what happened to the baby stolen all those years ago from the supermarket.
My Thoughts: Wow, this book just starts off highly confusing with all of the points of view, and not knowing who knows who. There are four ladies POV and it took me almost halfway through the book to realize I should jot down a few notes so I can make better sense of the story, however as more things are revealed, you can figure out who is connected to who and why… and that all is part of the mystery!
One theme in this book is that people can be good at being bad or bad at being good… and bad things can happen to good people, which can force them to do bad things! It’s all very twisty, and by the end of the book the story ties together pretty well!
The narrators in this book did a great job bringing the characters to life! I would definitely recommend! ❤️
You will like this book if you like:
🐞 Complicated mother/daughter relationships
🐞 Murder mysteries
🐞 Slow burn domestic thriller
🐞 Twisty thrillers
I really enjoyed this one! A LOT!
I will say usually lots of characters on audio is really hard for me to follow, but somehow this one worked and worked really well for me. I loved the slow build, how all of these seemingly strangers came togehter in one giant vat of six degrees of separation soup.
The two big twists towards the end had me completely surprised! I loved the shock factor.
This was so well done and will absolutely satiate any thirst you have for a good thriller/mystery.
I always enjoy Alice Feeney’s books and the twist shes hides in them. While I did see a few coming there was one twist toward the end that was unexpected and I was impressed how well concealed it was while also totally making sense. This ended with me somehow feeling happy which was kinda weird, being a thriller and all, but I liked it!
This was a very quick listen with both narrators doing a great job!
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the alc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
Feebly had done it again! She makes you care about her characters, warts and all.
Twisty which I do so love!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC!
Alice Feeney for me is an auto buy and i was looking forward to this book, but it left me blank. I am not sure what happened. To be hones i was bored. I will try to relisten in another time, may be it was a wrong time but i just was bored. I won't waste time recapping the plot, but I found the varying points of view and timelines confusing and couldn't keep the characters straight.
This book is so twisty, even when you think all the twists are revealed, there are more.
The women in this story are all complicated people, where your impression of them will alter and present the varying shades of grey that are their morals. It was a good thrill ride, but I took issue with a few of the plot points being implausible and actions being downright stupid. It felt like in order to keep the rollercoaster on track, some shady parts of the story got glossed over. Despite this, I'm sure it will have mass appeal.
3.5/5 Stars rounded up. Good Bad Girl is told from the POVs of Frankie, Cleo, Patience, and Edith - four women whose lives are intertwined in more ways than any of them know. I am struggling with how to summarize the plot of the book without giving anything away, so I will say that there are missing children, a murder investigation, and a whole lot of misdirection.
I enjoyed it, but ultimately I had problems with the plausibility of the plot. There were some events that had me scratching my head. I also don't have any issues with multiple POVs, but in this case the story felt disjointed at times. I wanted a more cohesive story in the end.
Overall I am glad I listened to it, and while it wasn't my favorite Alice Feeney book, I will definitely read more of her work in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to review this title!
Another fantastic suspense book by Alice Feeney. I was intrigued from the beginning. I kept thinking that there is no way that the events could be connected but the author does a wonderful job making every thing that seems impossible, possible. Twists and turns until the end. The narrators are some of the best I have listened to. They make the characters come to life. It is a book I could not put down!
This was a good read and I enjoyed the story and different characters, but it kind of lacked the tension and suspense that I associate with an Alice Feeney book. There are quite a few twists and turns that keep the storyline moving at a fast pace but it is a little slow getting to that point. The narration of this one could have been confusing with the number of female characters, but listening to the book was enjoyable and easy.
I just finished Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney narrated by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine. This felt different than previous Alice Feeney books. Overall, the story dragged and I could not wait to finish it because I was bored most of the time. There were twists and turns that I would usually enjoy but I feel like it added too much confusion. During yet another twist, I screamed in my head, "Enough with the unnecessary twists, get on with the story!" The narrators were good.
Huge thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced audiobook version. #Netgalley #GoodBadGirl
4.5 STARS - Alice Feeney is back with another twisty, chilling read! I was thrilled to have been given a digital audiobook advanced copy of this domestic thriller that starts off slow but picks up speed as readers begin to connect the dots between the POVs of four women - Frankie, Patience, Edith and Clio.
The story is filled with complicated family dynamics, a few twists (one that I should have seen coming but didn't!!) and skillfully narrated by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine. I have come to the conclusion that for me, Alice Feeney's books play out exceptionally well in audio (I'm still not over Richard Armitage's chilling narration of His & Hers! Ahhhmazing!).
Admittedly, Good Bad Girl is a bit of a slow burn and feels a bit disjointed in the beginning, but if readers are patient and allow Feeney to set up her story, they will be pleasantly surprised and entertained by this a blend of thriller and domestic drama with lots of dysfunctional family for good measure.
Good Bad Girl is clever, dark and discussion-provoking read that will give readers and book clubs much to discuss about important issues pertaining to motherhood.
Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to MacMillan Audio for the complimentary advanced digital audiobook ARC that was provided in exchange for my honest review.
Review of Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney
Alice Feeney is definitely one of my auto buy authors. I was able to listen to this one on audio thanks to the publisher and netgalley. I did enjoy this one, and found it binge worthy as I listened to it in just one day. However, I do have to say it is not my overall favorite book by this author. It’s probably closer to the bottom of the list, but I would rate it four stars if I still did star ratings. I’m wondering if I might have enjoyed reading a physical copy of the book better so let me know if you did and really loved this one. Sometimes I got confused with the timelines and characters for this one. Overall, the story was not as exciting as I’m used to
But I definitely came into it with extremely high expectations. I still can’t wait to see what comes next from this amazing author.
Synopsis:
Twenty years after a baby is stolen from a stroller, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow linked, and a good bad girl may be the key to discovering the truth.
Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she’s planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning messes and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything.
Edith’s own daughter, Clio, won’t speak to her. And someone new is about to knock on Clio’s door…and their intentions aren’t good.
With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.
In the style of Daisy Darker and Rock Paper Scissors, Good Bad Girl is a thriller in which nobody can be trusted and the twists come fast and furious.
I love Alice Feeney’s books and this one did not disappoint. It was definitely a complex plot with lots of twists and turns. Loved the ending and had me guessing until the end. Thank you!
