Alice Feeny is a favorite of mine. She's very good at keeping you guessing. She also never disappoints.
Thanks to NetGalley & MacMillan Audio for providing an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second Alice Feeney book I've read (both were audiobooks), and, clearly, she is very into the Big Twist. Good Bad Girl is about four women whose lives are linked in ways they don't even realize: an elderly mother in a carehome; her daughter, a therapist whose baby was snatched when she was just six months old; s teenage carehome employee working off the books; and that employee's mother, There's also a murder stuck in for good measure, as well as a miserable brother (of the therapist).
This story is told in alternating voices in the audiobook, which works OK. The elderly woman is Scottish, and no one has an issue with her accent (always a relief for an audiobook). There's also a minor character who speaks in a Cockney accent, which is quite well done.
Overall, I found the story to be overly complicated and it was tough to care too much about the characters. Their motivations seemed weird to me (why, if your brother was the one behind sticking your mom in a nursing home, would you allow her to think it was you who made that decision? Why would anyone allow someone to take their grandchild away, even with good intentions?) Everything is in service of The Twist, and it leads to some hard-to-repair plot holes.
Stephanie Racine did the voice acting for Daisy Darker as well, and her style has a few too many ... pauses ... for me. I doubt I will be reading another Alice Feeney as I really had to force myself on this one.
Iโm a huge Alice Feeney fan so I was psyched to get a copy of this one as an audiobook.
There it is, my declaration out in the world. I just canโt do it. I need a physical copy of her books. Itโs a promise
Iโm making to myselfโฆalways have a AF book in your hands Jess. ๐๐คฃ๐ There is just too much going on. Donโt get me wrong the audiobook narrator was great, I just struggled keeping everyoneโs character straight in my brain especially where there is a mystery POV thrown in there too. Then several chapters ended with The End. So I kept panicking that I was at โthe endโ and missed something but rest assuredโฆitโs not over until the endโฆend.
In true Alice Feeney fashion she wraps everything up nicely at the end.
Overall, an enjoyable solid read with complex relationships and motivations.
This was a good domestic thriller. It definitely had some twists I didnโt see coming. Lots of characters so it was a guessing game. Always love her books.
I enjoyed this book but it did take me longer than usual to get into it. I had a hard time following the story at the beginning but I eventually caught on. It started slow but picked up in the second half once I started to put things together. The audio was fantastic but the different point of views made it harder to follow. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audiobook.
The start of this book was super confusing at first. Constantly switching back and forth between Frankie, Edith, Chloe, and Patience. It all got to be too much.
After a while, it started to make a bit more sense. As the story unfolds, you start to put the pieces together. The shock factor wasnโt there for me. Maybe I watch too many Lifetime movies? But this premise has been done before.
This wasnโt my cup of tea, but it wasnโt horrible. If you like predictable stories, this may be for you.
I am so devastatingly disappointed that I didnโt love this. This was one of my top most-anticipated releases for this year. I have absolutely devoured her previous books. But this oneโฆ oh my, what a flop. It fell so flat for me.
I didnโt find any of the characters particularly endearing. I didnโt hate them, I just didnโt care enough. There were so many plot lines (none of which were very thrilling) happening simultaneously that I got a little lost at times. And, honestly, I was just bored the entire time. I was not at all invested in anyone or anything.
This lacked all of the spark, mystery, suspense, tension, and propulsive reading experience that I expect from this author. I really donโt know what happened here but it didnโt work for me. Better luck next year, hopefully?
I definitely struggled with the audiobook version. There are many perspectives and it switches often. I love this writing style normally but the audio and voice of the characters were hard to differentiate between.
Iโm still going to recommend to anyone who loves this author to give this book a shot. It wasnโt terrible but it was just a major let down from some of her other books. I absolutely hate giving this a low rating but I have to be fair and honest with it.
Alice Feeney the queen of twists delivers again with Good Bad Girl. Two crimes committed decades apart, could they possibly be linked together? We have 80-year-old Edith, Patience, (whose name isn't really Patience) and Clio. The way the author weaves together the story of these three women is masterful. Edith is planning her escape from the care home she's been tricked into, and Patience who has bonded with Edith, may just be her ticket out. Although, Patience has a few secrets of her own. Clio, Edith's daughter and a counselor, has a new client who may not have the best intentions. These three women are the key to solving the mystery with "three suspects, two murders, and one victim. I'll admit in the beginning the multiple POV were a bit hard to follow listening to the audiobook, but as the story went on I was able to keep them straight. I got really invested about a quarter of the way through and could not stop listening until the very at from that point forward. I figured out at least one twist at about 60 percent of the way through, but then got a case of whiplash from the twists from that point on. WOW. Alice Feeney knows how to throw some curveballs, but in the very best way. If you love a fast-paced mystery with roots deep in family drama, you will devour Good Bad Girl. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan audio for my ALC.
I have mixed feelings about Alice Feeney books but I had seen good things about this one. I thought it was ok. Not really as much of a thriller as her normal books. Iโm not really sure if you can count these as twists, as they were sort of hinted upon. Good but not particularly amazing or jaw dropping. The narration was good but a little confusing since there were several female perspectives.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Twenty years ago: a baby goes missing from a grocery store cart. Present day: a woman is murdered in a nursing home. This story follows four women and how theyโre all connected to these crimes and each other. Lots of good twists that in hindsight, I should have seen coming, but didnโt. Super solid mystery/thriller that Iโd recommend for your next binge read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was more along the lines of a domestic drama/suspense.
I loved the family dynamics. You thought you knew a character and peeled another layer back. I thought the character development was great. One line perfectly describes my own momโs relationship with my sister โI am the villain in my daughters life, and she is the villain in my life. We both believe our stories are true.โ
At the 50% mark I had it figured out but there were still some surprising twists. Everything was tied up and answered.
Twenty years ago, a baby was stolen from a supermarket. In present day, Edith, Frankie, Clio, and Patience are all dealing with the consequences of that action. Edith is a resident at a care home and wants to escape. Her daughter, Clio, harbors lots of resentment toward her mom. Patience works at the care home and has a bond with Edith. She hasn't seen her mom, Frankie, in almost a year. After the care home manager is murdered, no one is safe from being a suspect.
I normally love Alice Feeney's books and find them full of great twists and turns I didn't see coming. This one still had a bunch of twists, but I saw most, if not all, of them coming. There were only one or two smaller ones at the end I didn't see. Maybe it was the audio format instead of reading - it probably gave me more time to puzzle over it and piece things together.
I do appreciate that the narrators of this book used different voices/accents for each of the four main characters. Even with the chapters labeled by character name, in audio format it would have been hard to keep up with without the voice change.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Three suspects. Two murders. One victim.
Twenty years ago on Motherโs Day, a baby girl was snatched out of her stroller in the middle of the grocery store. The disappearance was never solved. In the present day, an unlikeable manager in a senior citizen care home is murdered. Good Bad Girl is the story of four women: Edith, Frankie, Clio, and Patience. How are they connected to each other, and how are the crimes connected?
This is the type of suspense I know I can count on from Alice Feeney โ twisty but also deep and emotional. The murder mystery is captivating and the character development is excellent. The plot was intricate and kept me guessing the entire time. Even when I thought I had everything figured out, Feeney still had some twists left to shock me.
The audio is well done and the narrators did a great job! I do think this one might be better enjoyed in physical book format though, as I did struggle a bit to keep track of the womenโs perspectives and the intricacies of their stories, and frequently wished I could flip back to refer to earlier parts of the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me an advance copy of this book.
โWe are the cartographers of our own destiny. Children only know how to love until the world or their mothers teach them how to hate.โ Good Bad Girl is a story about relationships, bonds, guilt, and consequences. Two murders, three suspects, and one victim propel this twisty mystery with hidden connections intricately woven throughout this addictive thriller. Who is telling the truth and who is delivering a false narrative? Alice Feeney expertly crafts a clever, character-driven story full of emotion, intensity, and nail-biting intrigue. โThere's often a gap between what we think and what we say. Itโs where what we feel lives.โ Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine masterfully bring the characters to life adding a layer of feeling, depth, and complexity. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my audiobook.
Book was ok but very preidictable. Nothing wild or unexpected happened. The overall story was good but wish I didnt guess everything ahead of time.
Alice Feeney is always an auto-read author for me, but her books can be hit or miss for me. Unfortunately, Good Bad Girl was not quite a miss, but it was not a favorite of Feeney's works. This story is a domestic thriller surrounding mothers and daughters. Patience, Clio, Frankie and Edith are the main characters who narrate the story. None of these four women are very happy, their lives have all intersected and things just seem to be going downhill. There are also flashbacks to Mother's Day 20 years ago when a baby was stolen from a supermarket. Feeney does a great job weaving everything together but it just didn't quite hit the mark. I will still be excited for Feeney's next book and the narration was very well done on this audiobook!
In a world where I can't seem to find a satisfying thriller book, Good Bad Girl met most of my needs! I found it surprising, interesting, and, while, you do need to suspend disbelief for more thrillers, this one was more realistic than most. The story was compelling, although I am sort of done with the whole "mom" thriller genre, and i didn't really get the huge focus on the sneakers. Nevertheless, this novel met my craving for a thrilling and enjoyable read.
Enjoyed the ride, but it seems like there were some plot holes in the story. So I ended up giving this a 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
I enjoyed this thriller, with its many twists and turns but had a bit of a hard time with the different points of view and the narrator. I listened to this on audio and sometimes just was lost with which point of view it was. I would like to give this another read with the physical copy because I think my rating would be much higher. 3 star for me.
Sweet Jesus this book was A L O T.
So many character POV's that made it near impossible to follow along on audio. DONT DO THIS ON AUDIO. One narrator for 4 people? No. A recipe for disaster. It was just too hard.
You'll have to literally sit and not focus on anything else but this book. The twists felt totally cheap for Alice's abilities. Like the vagueness and ambiguity was done on purpose for shock value, but for me, it was just not it.
Sure, there are "twists and turns" all around, but it produced eye rolls from me. I was like OH COME ON during one specific scene. I hate when the author tells two stories: the truth, and what they tell the reader. It's just so lazy.
Definitely not my favorite. This is better than I Know What You Did, but definitely not her best.
