I enjoy Alice Feeney's style of writing and Good Bad Girl further solidified this. There were twists and turns that came unexpectedly in this novel. Understanding the family dynamic between Edith, Cleo, Patience, and Frankie made things a little muddled at times. And the opening of Frankie's intention to leave work and never return was never fully explained. But with those aside, I enjoyed the female protagonists in this story.
I have never read an Alice Feeney novel before but I wanted to dive in because I have been in a thriller mood lately. It opens with a baby being snatched from its pram at a supermarket. Then we move on about 18 years and are introduced to a few intertwining characters, mainly women: Clio, a high strung psychologist, her mom Edith (who is in a care home), Patience (a teen runaway who works in the care home), Frankie (Patience’s mother) and Jude the art gallery owner. 9the only real male character) Of course there is a mystery – the head of the elder care home has been murdered, as well as Edith’s friend a month before in the home (and over time other residents in the care home have as well, and seemingly not from old age).
There are a lot of mother daughter issues in this novel – both Clio and Patience can’t forgive their respective mothers for terrible things that their mothers did years ago. I don’t want to get too deep into the relationships because the whole point of the book is figuring out the relationships and the murder and that’s the fun of it.
I think the point of this novel (besides the whole murder mystery) is what constitutes a bad person and what makes a bad mother?
This being my first Alice Feeney (and not my last) I really enjoyed it, it was not super fast paced (i.e. it was more of a slow burn) but I got through the audio in less than two days (I had a bit of grocery shopping and walking to do but also I wanted to know what was going to happen). The narrator was great and made the book more enjoyable. While some aspects of the story were predictable, I didn’t see all of it coming so I was happy that I couldn’t figure it all out (much of it, but not all). I have a feeling based on reviews that her other novels may be better but it was a great toe dip into Feeney for me.
This was a 3.75 star which I will round up to 4
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to review.
Good Bad Girl is a quick listen and I found that I wanted to find out what would happen next. I was a little confused at the beginning trying to keep all of the characters straight and who was who and what part they were playing. Once I got everyone straight I pretty much figured out the rest of the story. There was one twist at the end that I didn't figure out.
Overall, I enjoyed Good Bad Girl and I would recommend it for fans of Alice Feeney.
The legit QUEEN of twists is at it again! GOOD BAD GIRL is a bit of change from her pulse-pounding thrillers but I still enjoyed every page of this one (although I did listen to it on audio!)
Alice Feeney is an auto-buy author for me and I highly recommend this one to fans of dark family secrets and "bad people" being good (or is it bad people being good?)
Good Bad Girl was a very interesting thriller! I didn’t particularly love any of characters which I think is why it took me a little while to get into the book. It was fairly fast paced, especially since there were three different narrators. I listened to the audiobook of this and I enjoyed hearing the different voices for each character. The twists are good. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, another twist came in. I didn’t predict the ending so this thriller was a win in my book! I would definitely pick it up if you like this author’s other thrillers!
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC and review it honestly!
I’ve never read Alice Feeney before, but I’ve heard positive reviews. When I came across Good Girl Bad on NetGalley, I couldn’t resist requesting, particularly as it was in audiobook format. Thank you, netgalley and Macmillan audio for my ALC.
The story started out slow for me, particularly as we are introduced to the characters without much context. I didn’t initially care for that, but the further in the book I got the more sense this made. It was an unraveling of sorts, one were you are constantly trying to piece together what is really happening and figure out how it all connects.
The more I listened the more I engaged with the characters and how they were all linked. I found this to be a clever mystery with several twists I wasn’t expecting. Bonus for an ending that accounted for the complex dynamics in play.
The two narrators, Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine did an excellent job bringing the main characters and their stories to life. If audiobooks are your jam, I would recommend trying Good Girl Bad.
I'm not sure where to start with Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney. This is a very cleverly written novel! I have so many good things to say about it. At the very beginning it was a little hard to distinguish who was who and what role they played but as the story progressed it became much clearer and very intriguing!
There are four main characters and a bit of a complex plot. The book starts as a bit of a slow burn as everything gets established but it easily held my interest and I looked forward to listening to it, It's a hard review without giving too much away from the story but it is a well written drama/thriller type of book that explores the good and bad sides of motherhood, murder, deceit, trauma and depression.
The book was cleverly written, with a well developed plot and characters. was lucky enough to be able to listen to the audiobook. I thought the narrators did a great job. It was a solid 4 star read for me that I would definitely recommend!
Thank you @macmillanaudio & @netgalley for the audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for a honest review. This was a great read, kept me on my toes and I loved the style of writing for this book. The audiobook was great presented with the narrator being great. The story was a good one with a lot of twists that the reader wouldn't predict.
🐞Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney 🐞
★★★★★ 5/5 stars!
Three suspects. Two murders. One victim.
"Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things."
🐞 Synopsis
20 years ago, on Mother’s Day, a baby is stolen from her stroller in broad daylight. Now, a woman is found murdered in an elevator at a care home. The lives of 4 women intersect because these two unsolved crimes are somehow linked. They all have secrets, & there is more than one side to every story..
🐞 My Thoughts
I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again - Alice Feeney can do no wrong. Her poetic writing style makes me hang on every word, with beautiful turns of phrase that really resonate & stay with you. (I’m already planning to reread & annotate my copy!) I would say this one is more mystery than thriller, & I could not get enough!
The storyline is wonderfully complex without being confusing. It is filled with cleverly planted red herrings & unpredictable twists. The characters were so well developed & relatable, each with their own distinct personality, quirks, & shades of good & bad. I appreciated how she explored the often complicated dynamic of mother/daughter relationships.
I was so satisfied with how this seemingly tangled web unravels & ties into a perfect little bow of an ending. This is definitely a new favorite.
Katherine Press & Stephanie Racine did a stellar job of narrating the audiobook. These two were able bring all 4 of the good bad girls to life, making it so easy & fun to follow along.
read this if you like:
🐞 short chapters
🐞 family drama
🐞 unreliable narrators
🐞 multiple POVs / timelines
🐞 slow burn mysteries
🐞 whodunnit suspense
🐞 neatly tied up endings
Thank you to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio, & Alice Feeney for the opportunity to read/listen to this ARC ◡̈
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audiobook ARC! Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney is a twisty, multilayered family story of suspense. Twenty years ago a baby was stolen, now years later a woman is murdered in a senior care facility. Could these crimes be connected? What follows is family drama that speaks of the intricacies of the mother/daughter relationship and how every past decision impacts the future. The characters are fully fleshed out, for all their imperfections and skillfully written by Feeney. The story truly comes to life under the skilled narration of Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine. The twists in this book are sure to keep readers hooked and turning the pages or listening to the next chapter as they piece together each crime and character relationship.
Thank you MacMillan for the review audio of Good Bad Girl from Alice Feeney, one of my more anticipated books for the year.
I have some slightly mixed feelings about this one on audio that have less to do with the production and more that for me this one might be better in book form. It was hard to keep track of who was who and all the ways the story came together, which has more to do with the writing versus audio format or that for once I was less able to listen in longer chunks than usual as I think really getting into this story on audiobook might require more sustained listening.
Do I think this is a good thriller surely more than a win for fans of this author and twisty psych thrillers? Definitely! So 4 stars as I think all the notes for a solid thriller were present, the story was fast paced and kept the reader guessing, and the reveals were satisfying and didn't disappoint me as a reader (I hate when thrillers have twists that come out of nowhere). A lot of the plot and standard Feeney storytelling worked and always work for me, I enjoy how she pulls together pieces of a puzzle and brings readers along for a fun suspense ride.
A win for fans of Feeney's books (though this one won't be my favorite, I really am someone who loved Daisy Darker) and for fans of the recent Gone Tonight book, Nora Murphy's Stacy Willingham's All the Dangerous Things, and Nora Murphy's The New Mother.
It's every mother's worst nightmare -mine included- a baby being snatched in a grocery store, right beneath our eyes while we're chatting with a friend. That's how Good Bad Girl starts. In this twisty tale by Alice Feeney, you literally have no idea what will happen next. Everyone has a motivation for something, Everyone has a backstory. Everyone has something. I listened to this in audiobook format and it was absolutely enthralling, like a radio drama playing out in front of me. I needed to know what happened in this generational trauma story. I felt a lot of the trauma in my bones. Alice Feeney has a talent for the twist and it was *chef's kiss*. 10/10 highly recommend for any mystery fan.
Thank you to Macmillan audio for the advance listener copy! It was amazing. The multiple narrators were fabulous.
The narration really made this book! Between the two narrators, it was very engaging. Really inventive premise for a thriller. I enjoyed listening to this one and flew through it!
Thoughts about the narration:: These narrators do a fantastic job of creating suspense and bringing the voices to life. Alice Feeney books can be hard to keep track of once the twists start spinning (and I may have had to stop everything else and listen carefully a few times 😂) but these narrators helped guide me through the whirlwind and it was a joy to listen to from beginning to end.
Thoughts about the book: Alice Feeney has definitely been added to my list of auto-buy authors. I loved the characters in this book, especially the witty eighty-year old former store detective, Edith. This book was full of hidden secrets that were fun to try and sort out before they were revealed, and I certainly didn’t guess them all. Alice’s books always have whispers of an Agatha Christie novel (which I love), well developed characters, and fun dialog. Highly recommend!
💕You might like this book if:
🔹 you like a who-done-it mystery with a layered motive
🔹 you like complicated mother-daughter dynamics
🔹 you like when characters who don’t trust each other must find a way to work together
I will admit I was a tad confused about this story up until about 60%. Granted I was able to listen to the book, and have enjoyed Alice Feeney's previous books.
In this story, a twenty year difference between a baby being taken and a woman's death in a care center results in this story to see how these events are connected. The two events occurred on Mother's Day
There are four characters in this book, and the focal point is the mother daughter connection. The four characters are intertwined in a twisted way that we have come to know in this author's tales. One important idea I believe is that we need to go with the flow, and try not to puzzle out the characters and their connections. As thriller readers we are not often the ones to do this, although I would say this story is more of a domestic suspense.
In the story we meet Patience, Clio, Frankie and Edith, their relationship to the story starts to form although a bit confusing. Patience works in a care home looking after Edith and Edith is Clio's mother, while Frankie is Patience's mom.
Bottom line is this is a story, you will need to have patience to read and finally understand. Clever in its way, it is my least favorite of Alice Feeney books.
Thank you to Alice Feeney, Macmillan Audio, narrated by Katherine Press; Stephanie Racine, and NetGalley for the ability to listen to this story.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery and figuring out who stole a baby from a grocery store and who committed a murder at an elder care home. Told in multiple POV’s, the story revolves around mother and daughter relationships and how certain choices affect the trajectory of someone’s entire life.
I always enjoy the intricacies that Alice Feeney weaves throughout her novels and how each character is somehow linked. While this wasn’t my favorite of hers, I still had a fun time guessing who did what.
The narrators, Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine were perfect for this book and made the setting and characters stand out.
Good Bad Girl is my first book by Alice Feeney, and it was a promising introduction to this author. The audiobook, narrated by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine was fantastic, I found myself looking forward to chores so I could continue listening!
I love thriller/mystery novels that keep readers confused about what is going on, and Good Bad Girl is definitely that kind of book. It is told through multiple character points of view, and also through flashbacks to 20 years ago. Bit by bit, the reader is given information about the various characters and their relationship with each other, and to events in the past and present. Many times I had to alter the conclusions I had made about events due to new information--this novel is very twisty! Trust me, you will think you know what is going on and who is who...you don't!
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC of Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney. The opinions in this review are my own.
It most certainly is a fact- Good things can happen to bad people. It's also a fact, " A good book is nothing less than magic."
I love when the two ideas come together with Alice Feeney behind the wheel as this newest work takes you there and brings you back.
Two crimes -connected with 3 suspects-2 murders-1 victim....
Could this be nothing more than family drama-as in the mother hates the daughter?
Could this be wishing someone had not been born (which as a parent myself) is hard to type much less write.)
Could this be a kidnapping of a baby at a grocery store which had underlying motives larger than what's being told by all parties?
After all why wouldn't Edith Elliot not be content in a nursing home and wishes to escape daily at 80 yo when she has everything she needs?
Or could it have been that something else has shaken her to the core-perhaps a nearby murder in more ways than one?
Patience is her nurse and Frankie Fletcher's mom so perhaps we shall ask them--oh, wait - they're busy.
Ok, well let's face facts- we can't live forever-and facts must never lie dormant.
More than anyone Edith's daughter -Clio- might realize that life is short but she might also be made aware that new life may just be upon us and perhaps she'll come around to knowing that in life there's curve balls and sometimes losing is a gain.
Just be careful as sometimes you never know how your past might come crawling back to you and landing on your doorstep.
Now, I gotta run - Jude - seems to have more to say.
Thanks to Alice, the Macmillan Audio, Netgalley for this ARC audio in exchange for this honest review.
Reading Between the Wines book review #90/115 for 2023:
Rating: 3 ½ 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book: Good Bad Girl
Author: Alice Feeney
RELEASES on August 29, 2023!!!
Sipping thoughts: Good Bad Girl releases 2 days after my birthday and I just could not wait to crack it open. Alice Feeney is one of my top thriller authors and 2 of her books are in my top 10 of all time, Sometimes I Lie and I Know Who You Are. I also really loved His & Hers and Rock Paper Scissors. Unfortunately, this one is my least favorite. I still thought it was an interesting read, but it didn’t pack a punch like her other books. There were some small twists here and there that led to a major one at the end, but I just think it didn’t do it for me. I really think it is because I have such major expectations for a Feeney book. So, it is a good book in the thriller world, just not as good as Feeney normally writes.
Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @MacmillanAudio for an advanced copy of @GoodBadGirl.

This audio was incredible! Highly entertaining! I couldn’t wait for my walks or solo car rides to listen. True to Alice Feeney, I did not see the ending coming. I highly recommend!
