This book has a lot of characters and unclear linkages. I liked the setup of this book. We meet the different characters (Clio, Edith, Frankie, and Patience) and learn about their different problematic situations. The book goes back and forth in time to help set the mystery. While I found the mystery itself interesting, and some of the characters were compelling, overall I found that it dragged. The last 25% felt drawn out unnecessarily. I read this one on audio and found the narration was well done but lacked the inflection and impact of other audiobooks I've read. By the time we find out the linkages, I'd guessed half and the rest felt far fetched.
A huge thank you to the author and the publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Congrats to Alice Feeney on another pageturner. This novel is a family drama/mystery that kept me glued. I enjoyed every twist along the way. Bravo to the Narrator who did an outstanding job!
I liked this book! Good Bad Girl was a twisty and interesting novel. This story felt a bit all over the place but it wrapped up well. The story picked up after 60% of the book, though I wish it would’ve picked up sooner! It took a while for the characters connections to come together. When they did, it was great. There are plenty of twists in this story! Overall a good read!
This was a tough one for me to connect with, with regards to the characters and the plot, and that could be due to the fact that I had a hard time following the narrator and the different POVs. Perhaps this one is better read than listened to. I've read and loved other Alice Feeney books, but this one just didn't work for me. Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an alc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Alice Feeney strike again!! Loved this!
On Mother’s Day 20 years ago, a baby was taken, Now in the present day it’s Mothers day again, and Frankie is struggling to cope with the loss still. Patience ran away from home one year ago. She now works at a care home for the elderly. But Patience isn’t her real name. Edith is one of people that live in the care home that Patience works at, and one day Patience helps her escape. Frankie is Patience’s mother, and has been searching for her since the day she left home. Clio is Edith’s daughter and is now searching for her missing mother and all of their lives intersect after a murder takes place at the care home and there is four women, two murders, three suspects and one victim.
This is a slow burn domestic drama and it takes a bit to get going and you do have to pay attention to to the details but once the characters are set, it is so well done in true Feeney style that I couldn’t get enough. And the audiobook narration is fab as well. All the threads start to weave together and you’re left with a fabric of betrayal and murder that leaves you wanting more. Be patient and don’t give up on this one. It’s worth sticking with it.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.
A slow burn… dramatic suspense thriller that had my brain 🤯 scrambled. I really enjoy this genre in audio format. It makes the story really come to life. With this one in it did take a bit to establish the characters and their relationships. That being said once I got it down, I had it. Her books always leave me stunned by the ending and she has this way of dropping these sentence that are thought provoking and resonate with the reader. She is the only author in this genre I’ve ever wanted to highlight passages. This one theme explores the good and bad through motherhood and mother/daughter relationships. I really appreciate what she brings to the table every time. Unique but with her flair. Excited to see what others think of this twisty mind bending novel!
This is my third Alice Feeney novel and, I've gotta say, I have loved ever one. These books get better with each page, showing an elaborate twisting web that catches the reader by surprise. Each character was well thought out and their inclusion was important to the story, not just a bunch of extra filler characters. I have heard complaints about people not liking Alice Feeney books because they take time to develop, and that is fair. However, if you are willing to invest the time you will find a story that will blow you away.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the advance reader copy of this audiobook
I looove Alice Feeney and was so excited to get this audiobook ARC. Maybe my expectations were too high but this one fell a little flat. Reading it might have been better vs. listening because I had a hard time keeping up with the changing POVs. More of a slow burn domestic drama than a thriller, and it was missing the huge plot twists that I love about Feeney’s other books. She is still an auto-read author for me, this one just wasn’t my favorite.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
The beginning grabbed me. Alice Feeney did a great job explaining how a mother has negative feelings with their children - I just did not fully connect to that making me not fully connect with the characters / plot. There was a lot of characters where because I was listening I got a little confused. But I do like how Alice Feeney ties it all together. It was a good 3 star for me. Thank you NetGallery and Macamillan Audio for this arc !
Another hit from Alice Feeney!
The Narration by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine was perfect for this book--both had really great tones and the story flowed perfectly with them--usually I listen at around 1.8-2.5 and with this I was able to slow it down to 1.5 and get lost in the story without it dragging or moving too slow.
My first Alice Feeney book was Rock Paper Scissors and I listened to that in November 2022--by January 2023 I had listened to everything she had published and was never disappointed.
Good Bad Girl is unlike anything that I have listened to from her in the past--this story start 20 years ago and follow a dual timeline--primarily in the present with some scenes going back to the 20 years ago timeline. There are 4 main characters that are followed: Patience, Frankie, Edith, and Clio and the way their story weaves together and unravels is mysterious and heartbreaking.
While there are some triggery moments in this one--if you've read/listened to Feeney's earlier works you will know there are usually a lot of these--this one was more tame in comparison. This is a story where everyone could be guilty and at it's heart a story about the relationships between mothers and daughters.
Alice Feeney is and continues to be an instant buy author or me, one I listen to and still need to have the physical copy on my trophy shelf for re-reads.
Good Bad Girl is the first novel by Alice Feeney that I have read and I understand why she is called the queen of the thriller! I initially thought it was going to be predictable and I had it all figured out but then things got twisty! The story is told from the point of view of four women who are seemingly unconnected. Patience is a young woman who works at a care home. Edith is an 80 year old woman who was tricked into living in the nursing home. Clio, is a therapist who lives in a pretty pink house. Frankie is a prison librarian. As the story unfolds connections are revealed and four women who have no reason to trust each other have to work together to solve a murder and a cold case. The story grabbed my attention immediately and I couldn’t wait to see how it all played out. There is so much suspense and the twists were well done. I also enjoyed the narration by Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine.
I normally love this author, but I listened to this book on audiobook and with all of the different POVs, I was really having trouble following along. In the end, I loved the book, but would recommend reading it vs listening. I think that would make it easier to know what’s going on.
Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney. I have several Alice Feeney books on my shelf but this is the first one I have read. It did NOT disappoint! I received an ARC of the audiobook and I could not stop listening. This book pulled me in from the first page. I loved everything about this book and wouldn’t change a thing! So many unexpected twists! 5 stars and one of my favorite books this year!!! Thanks Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the ARC! This will be published on August 29th!
In Good Bad Girl we are treated to multiple narrators as we try to determine who is the hero and who is the villian in the story. We meet Edith in a care home, hoping to get out while also trying to solve a murder happening inside. Patience who cares for in the home and Edith's daughter Cleo. Frankie is introduced as a prison librarian who is searching for her run away 18 year old daughter - it is also in clear that she is in the mix. All of these women are flawed and have made mistakes, the only question is, can they overcome the past?
When there is an accident in the care home a strange police detective becomes involved and we are off the races. Are one of these women related to the baby that disappeared at the start of the story. The components did not fit together well for me and I felt a bit of it was just forced. It did keep me guessing though, and I think you will enjoy the suspense!
Narrators Katherine Press and Stephanie Racine did excellent jobs - I fell in love with Edith and her accent #Macmillan #Goodbadgirl #AliceFeeney
"We are all made up of stardust and stories".
At first I wasn't sure what these four women would have in common, but sure enough the twists and turns brought them all together. The story kept me interested and engaged, I wanted to know whodunnit AND how these women connected! I'd definitely read more by Alice Feeney!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Alice Feeney at her best. I loved this one!
A baby went missing 20 years ago in a supermarket and the case was never solved.
Patience is young and hiding out, living in an attic and working off the record for a retirement home.
Edith has been left in the retirement home by her estranged daughter, Clio. She befriends Patience but does she really know her? The same day Edith escapes the home, a supervisor is killed and she's not the first to die there.
Patience's mom is looking for her. She will go to great lengths to find her, even if it means committing a crime.
Two of these women are suspects in the murder investigation. Three have big secrets. One is looking for answers. Another knows how it's all connected.
I gave this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! I listened to this audiobook in one day!! I could not stop listening. I did not have it figured out until the end. In love Alice Feeney and this was probably my favorite one yet!
Thank you to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for an advanced audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
After Reading Rock, Paper, Scissors I KNEW I had to get my hands on an advanced copy of Alice Feeney’s latest novel out on 8/29! Unsurprisingly to myself, I devoured it within two days of downloading. After a “WTF” first chapter, Alice Feeney drops tiny little Easter eggs in every single chapter that keep you guessing. Just when you think you have it figured out - TWIST! She keeps me on my toes, and will not stop getting my hands on everything she writes.
This is the second book I’ve read by Alice Feeney and even though there were a few niggling issues, I enjoyed this book!
I literally can’t say anything about the story without giving something away, other than to say it’s a complex plot with a whole bunch of strands that are eventually braided together. I figured out one of the main twists fairly early on, but there are so many in rapid succession that it didn’t bother me. The characters were flawed and interesting, yet still fairly likable (generally). If you enjoy family mysteries, I’d recommend you give this a try!
I received an audiobook copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I thoroughly enjoyed Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney. It was more cohesive than her previous release Daisy Darker, in my opinion. Here is the synopsis from the publisher: Twenty years after a baby is stolen from a stroller, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow linked, and a good bad girl may be the key to discovering the truth. Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she’s planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning messes and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything. Edith’s own daughter, Clio, won’t speak to her. And someone new is about to knock on Clio’s door…and their intentions aren’t good. With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.
The statement "sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things" is repeated a few times in the story. Although the bad things are bad, the story is not overtly dark or disturbing. It is a fantastic examination of mother/daughter relationships, motherhood in general and family dysfunction. The characters were well-developed and the author made each one wonderfully realistic, unique and interesting. The plot kept me guessing and wanting more. I thought I had it all figured out at the end, but happily did not. Feeney truly did not disappoint with this story.
As this was an ARC audio book, I like to give feedback on the narrators. Both were excellent.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance copy for my honest review. I honestly loved Good Bad Girl!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free book.
I'll start with this is a bit different from the other Feeney books I've read - it's less thriller and more domestic suspense. But this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. I liked how Feeney took motherhood to the dark and drama filled side of life in this book. You start out with a shocker of a beginning and slowly the story unravels through different times and POVs to show how these characters are connected, with some suspenseful moments thrown in. I wasn't shocked by much here, but I was left satisfied because the story had deeply imagined characters that were easy to root for and be disgusted by. It's a slow burn that reveals just enough to keep the reader engaged throughout.
Loved the narration here. There were two narrators, which worked so well with the age difference of some of the characters. They both performed their parts beautifully.
