Good Bad Girl is the first audiobook I'm reviewing for Net Galley, I loved the narrator (great voices of characters) and the story kept me on the edge of my set. Definitely would recommend!
There were some jaw dropping moments and I enjoyed the book. This was my 2nd audio book and I got confused with the chapters switching characters so much. Toward the end I put it on 1.5 speed to hurry it up. I may get the book to read it because I feel I missed some parts.
I love Alive Feeney and this book was no exception. The way she twists point of view and uses it as the main tool at hand for manipulating the reader is masterful.
This was absolutely my favorite Alice Feeney to date! I didn’t read the synopsis prior to reading and you shouldn’t either. I will tell you that the book follows four women, Frankie, Patience, Clio, and Edith. The mystery to the reader is how are the lives of these four women linked? I must also mention that Frankie is a prison librarian… how unique! I had so much fun reading this. What makes a mother?
“A good book can be a light in the darkness. A good book can cure loneliness, change minds, or even change the world. A good book is nothing less than magic.”
Alice Fenney really is THAT girl, but this is definitely my least favorite of her works. It felt more like domestic/familial literary fiction than a straight-up THRILLER and out of all her books it felt the least dark and spooky. I don't know! The atmosphere she normally writes so well just wasn't there in this one. It was convoluted and a tad boring and I just wasn't thrilled. I still stand by it being an overall good book, but it just didn't meet my expectations considering how much I've LOVED every single thing I've ever read from her before. I also guessed the twist as soon as it was possible to and while predictability doesn't always determine my rating of a book, Alice Feeney normally writes the best twists so I was let down by this BIG TIME.
The audiobook was fantastic though, so if you're going to pick this up I highly recommend doing it audibly. Stephanie Racine has narrated every Alice Feeney if I'm not mistaken and her voice just does it for me! She's also THAT bitch!! Amazing dynamic duo.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy. All thoughts and opinions are, as always, my very own.
I enjoyed this more than most of the author's other books! Though ti took me a minute to follow the time jumps and multiple POVs, I liked that aspect of the story and it made it feel more engaging. As for the story itself, I felt there were a few parts that were a bit repetitive, but overall, it was entertaining, and the the big twist towards the end was definitely unexpected! One of the better thrillers I read this year!
Every single time I finish reading a thriller by Alice Feeney, I feel a strange sense of whiplash. It’s like I just got pushed from behind, punched in the gut, and slapped across the face a few times. The jaw-dropping twists, turns, and surprises leave me in a shocking state of disbelief. Feeney sure knows how to mess with her reader’s minds, there’s no denying that. It took a handful of chapters for me to really get into her latest, Good Bad Girl. I had trouble pegging down all of the characters, and keeping them straight. Once I wrapped my head around them all, I could finally focus on the plot. And what a crazy twisted plot it was! There’s two major crimes: a stolen baby, and a care home employee is murdered. Even though the crimes are committed twenty years apart, they are linked. That’s all I’m going to say because going into Feeney’s thrillers relatively blind is always best. Motherhood—with a strong emphasis on mother/daughter relationships—is a major theme in this novel, which I really appreciated. In true form, Feeney crafts an unpredictable storyline that will leave you speechless, and as always, the characters are well-developed and complex. Another solid thriller from Alice Feeney! Good Bad Girl is available now, and it gets 4/5 stars from me!
This was such a multi-layered read that dives deep into the mother daughter relationship and packs in the drama! I was hooked right away and certainly intrigued from start to finish!
There’s quite a lot of characters introduced at first but they eventually become quite clear. If you’re listening to the audiobook, I suggest you pay close attention at first so that you get a clear grasp on who everyone is and their roles in the plot! The short chapters worked well to continually drive the suspense and I’m always a fan of Feeney’s writing style!
While I may have saw most of it coming, I definitely did not foresee every single twist! This wasn’t my favourite by Feeney but I still found it quite entertaining! My recommendation is to go into this one as blindly as possible for maximum enjoyment!
I have to admit that I struggled through this thriller. While the narrator was engaging, the story itself didn’t hook me. It took too long for any connections between the characters to even be hinted at so it felt like I was reading about three random people even though I knew they had to be connected somehow. This left me frustrated and, frankly, a bit bored. Frankie’s character could have been much more engaging - she worked in a women’s prison as a librarian and lived on a boat for goodness sakes! - but even she fell flat. I kept stopping this audiobook for any other activity, which isn’t a good sign in my book. I enjoyed Feeney’s previous books because I felt like the “twist” was a surprise yet, when looking back, there were signs the reader could have picked up on. In “Good Bad Girl,” the “twist” was lackluster and any potentially interesting moments (I.e. the kidnapping and then murder) were completely glossed over, as if Feeney just didn’t feel up to writing them with any oomph. The narrator did a good job of characterizing via different voices and her pacing was nice but this was just meh for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook. All opinions are my own.
What a sensational novel! Alice Feeney did another extraordinary job creating a thriller that kept me sneaking my book out whenever I had a free moment. I absolutely couldn't get it out of my head. Grand characters and an even grander ending!
3.5 stars rounded up. I wanted to love this book because I LOVE Alice Feeney. However, it fell a bit flat for me. It was more of a family drama compared to a thriller. I still liked it, and didn't expect the ending, The narrators did a great job and it did keep me entertained.
Alice Feeney has become one of my favorite authors! I did enjoy Good Bad Girl but I wish that it progressed a lot quicker because I wanted to know more about the plot twist (will not give any spoilers).
I'll start by saying that I really liked 'Daisy Darker' and from that reading experience, thought that I 'got' this author's style—slow burn suspense with gradual reveals of small, very significant details. But this one felt a little ham-handed to me, like she may have succumbed to the pressure of needing to blow readers' minds even more than she had with the previous book. I can safely say she succeeded in that, but for me, not in a good way.
The premise, that there are good people who make sometimes bad choices, without becoming bad people did not bear out AT ALL for me. True, some of the decisions were bad ones without making a character irredeemable, but the seminal decision? Ugh. It transcended bad. It would take a rethinking of the English language to characterize just how awful it was. But characters can make despicable choices and still the book itself is fine, because though we may not have made the decision ourselves, we can sufficiently get into the character's head that we see why they did. That wasn't the case here for me. The decision wasn't just "bad" it was farfetched, difficult to reconcile with the character as portrayed, not explained by their insistence that they were 'different back then', and involved a series of very convoluted and equally farfetched plot points that, by the end, had me simply wishing the entire drama over. The twists actually made me question whether the author even wanted it to be believable, or whether there was an actual goal of just coming up with as many twists as possible. And the final twist, for me, wasn't even that much of a surprise. I guessed it, and read on, wondering how the author could weave a yarn that sufficiently explained it as being in the realm of the possible, never mind the likely. She explained it alright, but using the device that I dislike most—a long-winded confession of motive and circumstances by one of the characters. Whenever that's necessary, IMO, it means the author has written themselves into a corner from which it is impossible to emerge without a lengthy explanation, which can't come in narrative, so must be in the voice of one of the main players in the drama. To me, it renders all of the red herrings tricks, rather than legitimate misdirection. They didn't feel ... honest, if that makes sense
I was disappointed by this one.
Audiobook Note: Generally competent narration, including changes of accents and inflection where necessary, but there was at times, a hint of melodrama in the style, which I didn't enjoy. Having said that, I think the narrator was better than the book.
This book was great! It kept me guessing and i didn’t find the different POVs to be confusing. Alice Feeney remains an auto read for me!
Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.
Good read with plenty of decent twists! Sometimes it got a little confusing who was who if I wasn't fully paying attention, and was a bit more of a slow burn but still enjoyable. The narrators did a good job.
I unfortunately DNFd this book from Alice Feeney. I’m not sure if it was the pacing of what exactly but I just couldn’t get through it. In my opinion the story is a bit meh and predictable. I’ll possibly pick up at a later date.
I have been loving Alice Feeney’s books for years, and was so excited to read Good Bad Girl. I can always count on the author for all the twists and shock value, but for me this one was more of a slow burn suspense with themes of motherhood at the center of the story.
While I did enjoy it for the most part, I definitely think I hyped it up a bit, and I was really hoping for more twists and more of a fast paced thrill ride that I’m used to.
🎧I thought the narration on the audiobook was a great choice and would prefer this format.
*many thanks to Flatiron and Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
This is my first Alice Feeney book and while I might could have followed along more closely, the skilled audiobook narrators did a superb job at keeping things flowing even when the plot was a confusing. The book starts at The End and goes back to The Beginning. I found the varying points of view and timelines confusing and couldn't keep the characters straight. The convoluted plot meanders along at a slow pace, and while it eventually comes together, it wasn't my favorite.
Another Alice feeney but found that this one didn't hit like it has in the past. I found myself not thrilled iwht the mystery
20 years after a baby is stolen from a stroller, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow connected, and a “good bad girl” seems to be the key to figuring it all out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved the connections and trying to figure it all out. I was actually right about a few things, but for the most part I was blown away by the reveals.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a thriller/mystery novel and will be telling my friends and family that they should check it out ASAP!
