As usual, Amalie brings a great romance in The Caribbean!
I really enjoy reading her books because it’s so well researched and different from the norm.
Loved seeing Lisbeth slowly falling for Raphael, and, even though I thought the ending was a bit hushed, I was happy that they got their HEA.

The afterword is one of my favorite things in Howard’s books, when she share all her research with the readers and we get to learn new things that she incorporated in the plot seamlessly.
This might be one of my new favorites from her.

This book was full of twists for me. First, I did not know it was part of the series and I have not read the other ones. It definitely reads as a stand-alone. I’m also not usually a fan of the high seas and pirates, but the cover sucked me in. I do love all things Victorian (which is why the cover spoke to me) and I like how that all came together in the book in terms of being away from England. I thought Lady Lisbeth was totally kick ass. I mean, there are not a lot of stories with the female main character getting into sword fights. Raphael Saint is a great name for a sexy captain. He is also a French Duke. There is some forced proximity going on in this book. The sexual tension is off the charts and Raphael falls first. He has to work on the wooing. Their conversations are funny and witty. Trust becomes a part of the equation (which makes it super swoony). Some of the secondary characters really stand out. One of them being Narina, who is an orphan, growing up around sailors/smugglers. Her vocabulary is laugh-out-loud. It would not be great in real life, but it’s fun in a fiction story. There are elements of biracial characters and a few light sexual kinks brought up in this story. I appreciate that it is not preachy, but nicely woven into the story. I think the author did a lot of research about the setting and how smuggling worked during that time so it gives the reader a more authentic feel for what the Caribbean might have been like during that time period. The end is exciting and twisty. I really liked the book and highly recommend it. Especially if you are looking for a historical romance that is slightly different. This would make for a perfect Spring Break read!

I find Amalie Howard's books a little bit hard work. I've read a few in this series and I find generally I like to be *led* through a story, rather than beaten over the head with the characters (generally very anachronistic) social conscience. I am just not sure what the point of setting these in a historical context is. Anyway, they're otherwise fine - a bit like a slightly more moralistic, action-packed but fairly humourless Romancing the Stone I suppose? If you like that sort of thing?

I think I have found my pirate era, because I have been loving books with pirate vibes lately. This is the fourth book in the Daring Dukes series, and is such a fun, fast-paced read, full of action, adventure, and spice. Lady Lisbeth Medford is our FMC, who happens to not only be a Countess, but also an international spy whose alter ego is the infamous Bonnie Bess - ship captain and ruthless smuggler. Raphael Saint is the witty, aggravating, charming MMC who is the nephew of the man she is hunting. Their chemistry is amazing!
- He falls first!
- Reluctant allies to lovers!
- Forced proximity
- Pansexual rep
- Diverse characters
- Pirates/smugglers
I have loved all of Amalie Howard's books, but I think this one might be my favorite so far. Also, be sure to read the Author Notes at the end. They are really interesting and give a lot of insight. Thank you to @netgalley, @sourcebookscasa and @amaliehoward for the ARC!

This is the fourth in the Daring Dukes series but they work as stand-alones...and while I jumped into the series at this point, I’m for sure going to go back and read the others because this was perfection.

I didn’t realize I was in need of a fierce female ship captain, smuggler, and spy but turns out I absolutely was. Combine Lady Lisbeth Medford (or Bonnie Bess as she’s known on the high seas) with Raphael Saint, the Duc de Viel, and you’ve got fireworks, adventure, and knife fights galore. The two of them just don’t know how to stay out of trouble, and neither of them trusts easily, but they’re the perfect pair when put together. The supporting characters were pure gold as well, and I’m going to start using some salty pirate language from now on, courtesy of Narina (the orphan Lisbeth takes under her wing).

I can’t recommend this one enough, it was such a fun adventure!

Assuming the identity of the fierce lady pirate Bonnie Bess, spy Lady Lisbeth has worked two years on her mission to capture the most prolific pirate of them all for the American Embassy. Lisbeth unexpectedly crosses paths with Raphael, or Duc de Veil, who just happens to be the nephew of the notorious pirate king she’s been looking for. From the start the handsome and cocky Duke gets on Lisbeth’s nerves. They both know there is more to each other’s story they aren’t willing to reveal. Both Raphael and Lisbeth slowly learn to trust each other and realize they can work together to take down the same man. But can they fully trust each other with all their secrets and hidden identities?

With a passionate romance, familial betrayals and hilarious and complex characters this book has everything!

Another solid book from this author. I have read previous titles and was confident that this author won’t let me down with her expertly woven prose and beautiful writing on the MCs chemistry.

Please go read this book if you’re looking for a reason why the historical romance genre is criminally underrated.

This book didn't work for me. I listened to the audiobook and felt the narration was off. Overall, I never felt the chemistry between the characters. The whole thing was kind of choppy.

This book absolutely blew me away! I didn’t go into it with any expectations, but wanted to read it since I had enjoyed the other Amalie Howard books that I’ve read, but this was by far the best one that I have read. The dynamic and tension between Lisbeth and Raphael was so good, and I loved the way that their relationship evolved on all of the different levels, especially considering the secrets that both of them had. I was expecting to be disappointed by how these secrets came to light because it would have been so easy for there to be miscommunication used, but it was handled really wonderfully and both of them acted in character. I am now going to read all of the other books in this series because I loved this one so much — I absolutely devoured this book and cannot wait for more like it!

Any Duke In a Storm is an action-packed, highly entertaining enemies to lovers historical romance set aboard a pirate ship with the most badass captain at the helm, Bonnie Bess. Bonnie Bess is the undercover identity for Lady Lisbeth Medford, Countess of Waterstone & also famed spy. She is the epitome of badass heroine & an absolute marvel along with her friends & crew.

Any Duke In a Storm by Amalie Howard is my new favorite historical romance of all time!

This is book #4 in the Daring Dukes series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. I’ve also read book #3 in the series called The Duke in Question, which is like James Bond meets Bridgerton vibes & I also gave it 5 stars!

Any Duke In a Storm is great for fans of…
💛Historical Romance
💛Pirates & Ships
💛Forced Proximity
💛Morally Grey Hero

This is the type of book that I think should be everywhere & I haven’t seen it talked about much but it totally should be. It has all the ingredients of a perfect thrilling romance with the exciting setting, dashing espionage of hidden identities, the complexity of a morally grey hero, an unstoppable heroine, the sensational chemistry between leads & so much more & this is executed so beautifully that I could not put this one down.

This author is complete magic at writing captivating stories that also utilize some history in them. The acknowledgements section is not to be missed.

If you’re looking for an action-packed romance , I cannot recommend Any Duke In a Storm enough. Furthermore, even if historically you aren’t a fan of historical romances, I think this is a story that could be enjoyed by all!

Massive thanks to NetGalley & Sourcebooks Casablanca for the gifted copy, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.

I also want to post on my IG & add a link once I do.

Swashbuckling adventure and sensuality are the back bones to Amalie Howard’s fourth installment in her Daring Duke’s series. Any Duke in a Storm is an exciting romance with a spy heroine in disguise as a pirate and an elusive Duke. Amalie Howard embraces adventure and intrigue as she builds this high seas romance with sensuality and banter. Howard’s writing is beautiful and engaging. This story clips along at a wonderful pace. The characters are charming and well rounded. And this novel is the perfect balance of plot and romance. This novel can easily be read as a stand alone in this series and I find this one to be my new favorite.

For a sexy romance set on the high seas, this novel is sure to delight! If you are in the mood for a historical romance that feel new and fresh and has a fun and unique setting, than you should definitely pick up this novel!

I would highly recommend this novel and any in this series! Amalie Howard is truly in her prime and each installment just gets better and better!

Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

DNF- nothing about this is working for me. From the endless info dumping to the lack of any kind of setting (they are in the Caribbean and they might as well be in limbo. There's a complete lack of sense of setting or description or detail) There are 21st century lectures about the evils of capitalism in between all the telling. Absolutely zero showing 🥴 No one is developed enough for me to care about them. Also there's a 12 year old child that sounds like a twenty something Tik Tokker and I just cannot.

I received an ARC in exchange for my review

Absolutely loved this book. I hadn't read any in the series yet (and this would normally bother me as a staunch series in order reader) and didn't really feel like I had missed anything. It might have been nice to read the others in case our FMC, Lisbeth/Bess was mentioned in them but I'll go back and read them later! Also, there was only one point that I felt that I missing something but I got over it haha.

I felt that Amalie did a wonderful job really showing us how solitary these two characters--Lisbeth and Raphael--were. Much of the first 30% is their inner dialogue and them telling us what they see, think, and feel. Because, why would they be voicing any of this? Who would they tell? It just emphasized how alone and lonely they were. Both of them are totally taken by surprise by the other and cannot believe they've met their match. Lisbeth, as Bess, has MOUTH on her. Wow. I loved it. No missish miss here. And Raphael is totally blown away by her and into it once he realizes he cannot, and should not, underestimate her. At the same time, Raphael shows his expertise sailing and competence which surprises Bess who runs a majority female ship.

The spice in this book is INCREDIBLE. I had forgotten how great Amalie's sex scenes were. So well written. Full of detail and emotion AND originality!

Adventures on the high sea, dangerous storms, pirates, spies, lies, deceptions and outright betrayal, revenge and unexpected love. What else can you want?

Raphael Saint, aka Duc de Viel, is out for revenge on his uncle, Charles Dubois, the Captain Prince, Prince of the Smugglers, who betrayed Raphael's father with lies and had him murdered in prison. Now if he could only get rid of his annoying nephew, he would inherit the title.

Lady Lisbeth Medford, Countess of Waterstone, was introduced in the previous book as the ex wife of spymaster Valentine Medford, the Duke of Thornbury. They were really just partners in spying for the American Treasury and the British Homefront, not bed partners. Thornbury has retired from the spy business, but is in the shipping business with Saint. They have a Robin Hood thing going, stealing from smugglers to give to the people who are forced to pay protection to the bully smugglers. Lisbeth's current assignment has her disguised as the pirate/smuggler Bonnie Bess, to bring in Charles Dubois.

When Raphael escapes jail where his Uncle had him imprisoned and after Lisbeth accidentally blew up two of his shops instead of Dubois, he ends up on her ship. There they start to get on each other's nerves and other body parts.

Great story, terrific characters, lots of banter and some history thrown in.

I read a gifted advances reader's copy from Netgalley.com. This is my honest, voluntary and unbiased review. And I recommend the entire series.

So our favourite spy Lisbeth, is deep on a mission posing as a lady pirate. Bonny Bess is fearsome, cuts men's precious organs whenever necessary, fights like the devil and explodes ships.
And that's how we reconnect with her and that's how she meets with our hero..
Raphael nephew of the Prince of contraband or something, has just escaped from the prison where this uncle has him trapped in order to kill him. He gets a job on Bonnie Bess ' ship without knowing 3 things:
1) His new captain just exploded 2 of his ship
2) She's after his motherfucker uncle as well
3) Poor thing he'll fall very very deeply.
So of course they hate each other at first like come on, ROMANCE 101 and then a storm happens where the captain falls into the ocean. Saint (that's the name Raphael goes by into the underworld or whatever goes by) comes to the rescue.. And then he takes her to the big Criminal Island where she gets close to her target.
So, that was an actual adventure! It was almost cinematic! There was adventure, fight scenes, love scenes, everything! Also I loved how inclusive was Amalie's writing (as all of her book's I've read) without being overwhelming or feeling random, even awkward (sorry many writers struggle with this and the result is not working for me)
One of my first notes of the book, was "This guy is definitely going to have to grovel, a lot" I was completely and absolutely wrong! Raphael was not what I thought he would be. I mean most heroes aren't, but he actually had his heart on his eyes from early, regardless the big pirate, tattoos, nipple piercing etc.. Oh, he also has a piercing on his "velvet wrapped steel" (yeah I had to use that eventually 🤭)
I had previously met Lisbeth on the previous book of the series and I was looking forward for her story. I liked her and could understand why she had such high walls. I loved that Raphael understood her and her relationship with Nari was great.
Loved it, now I'm waiting for Thorin's book... I know it's coming... It's coming right?! 🤭🤭

Smuggling, sword fights, and high stakes made this fabulous historical romance unputdownable. After being captured by his nefarious uncle, Raphael Saint hops aboard a new ship to start fresh until he can reclaim his crew—but he doesn’t realize he stepped right into the path of Lady Lisbeth Medford, aka Bonnie Bess, an undercover agent on the run. Bess is all business, but she cannot get that swarthy new sailing master out of her mind. Eventually, they’re thrown together in enough pulse-racing situations for Bess to let down her guard and trust Raphael with her life, and heart. This fast-paced adventure romance is well-researched and well-executed with commentary on colonialism, details inspired by real life lady pirates, and a fun pit stop in Gilded Age New York.
