Calder is not the boy next door. He doesn't live like the most of us and he doesnt know the difference. He lives on a religious compound with his family helping them reach the prophecy their leader has been teaching them. The prophecy gets closer when Eden arrives. Calder shouldn't be so drawn to something that's not his.
The story starts off with Calder and Eden's point of view as young children and expands as they become teenagers. There is such a beautiful, innocent love story that you can't help but root for. The strength with both of the characters is what makes the book so beautifully written.
This book was a definite can't put down kind of book. I already need to know what happens next. Mia Sheridan is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
Thank you to Netgalley, Mia Sheridan, and the publishers for this free ebook. This review is 100% my own and honest opinion.
I was very intrigued by the cult aspect of this book. I’ve never read anything quite like it, so it was definitely different and interesting. I was kind of expecting to get more of the after in this book, or I guess just less of the before? I understand that’s what book two is about but it dragged just a little for me!
Besides that, I really enjoyed this book. To be a witness of not only their love story but their journey out was fantastic. I had to know more so I was constantly struggling to put this book down.
I have yet to read a bad Mia Sheridan book and I can’t wait to see how this concludes in Finding Eden.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
Mia Sheridan is a go-to author for me and I love reading her books and am always in my feels whenever I'm pulling an all-nighter reading! SO impressed!
This book I was around 25% and I was going to DNF it, then decided to check out how it all ended. And well that sounded amazing so I went back to that 25% and kept reading. Well to say that this one was a slog is an understatement. It could have been 200 pages shorter and faster paced and it would have been perfect. But page after page of these two kids mooning over each other was just a bit much.
This book really just took me for a ride. I loved the build up, the character development, and the writing. I would definitely read more from this author!
put off this review for a while because I just didn’t know how I felt after reading. I didn’t hate it but it also wasn’t really doing it for me.
To start, I found the backstory of Calder and Eden growing up in a cult to be interesting. Especially Hector’s leadership and his lavish living that contrasted so much with the workers.
I wasn’t vibing with Eden the fmc
This story is very much instalove especially on Eden’s part. It literally seems like she sees him and is instantly obsessed with him for years before anything happens. I felt that she was really naive (which I know is expected from growing up in a cult) but I mean naive in terms of making rash decisions without thinking or caring of the consequences especially since she’s not the one usually suffering for her actions. Almost like she would want to do these crazy things that if they got caught would definitely be punished for but really Calder would be punished more severely than her and yet she would keep risking it smh
I say all this to say I’m probably still going to read the second one just because it’s sounds like it’ll be mostly from Calder’s pov and the ending of this book left me very ???? so I need answers.
First off, I have to say that I LOVE Mia Sheridan. I have read Archers Voice, Travis & Graysons Vow prior to reading Becoming Calder and loved them both. I was so excited when I saw this republished book as an ARC on Netgalley and even more excited when I got the copy!
This book started off very strong for me. The cult aspect was much different than her other books and it was something I don’t normally read, so I was brought right in. I fell as the story went on, it started to lose me more and more. Aspects of it were drawn out and I felt myself reading it just to finish. I didn’t force myself to read and was happy to pick it back up, but it didn’t make me want to read to the point I couldn’t put it down. With that being said, the writing was beautiful and Mia is a very gifted writer!
I will continue with the duology as there were so many questions left answered which will have a beautiful wrap up in Finding Eden, I’m sure!
Thank you Net Galley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love Mia Sheridan! Her books are always incredible and this book did not disappoint. I loved this book and it was an incredible read.
I requested this ARC because Mia Sheridan blew me away with the book Archer, and I figured might as well hope for the best and try again. Let me tell you, she definitely delivered! Becoming Calder started pretty slow, and I wasn't sure what to expect, Calder and Eden live in a religious cult if you will, and the leader is for telling the end of times, while simultaneously giving the ick for not only raising Eden, but then wanting to marry her and do the dirty deed once she turns 18. Naturally Eden and Calder fall in love and decide to escape their small community realizing it seems too good to be true. Can they survive outside of the community with their friend Xander, or was getting away too good to be true? I was truly shocked by the end, it broke my heart and made me cry, and then made my emotions immediately do a 180 turn. Mia Sheridan does not mess around with her writing. She brought the emotion, the spice, and the weird cult community to life. I truly enjoyed this book, and now I'm simply devastated that I don't have the second one!
Thank you Net Galley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
P.S. Sorry it's late, nursing school has not been forgiving to me lately.
Oh my goodness this book was incredible. In Mia Sheridan fashion, she rips your heart out and pieces it back perfectly!
Calder is growing up within a cult, but it’s all he has ever known. When Eden is brought in as a young girl to save all of them, he feels something stir within him. As they both grow up, both of them feel forbidden things. Eden is expected to marry Hector, their leader, when she turns 18 in order to save them all from the great flood. Will Calder and Eden risk it all to be together? It that even a possibility?
I really always like books by Sheridan. This one, however, let me down. While I loved the cult aspect of the story, the ending left much to be desired. I don’t need a pretty bow to wrap it up, but I do need some answers! I am not sorry I read it…just wish there had been more than the abrupt ending.
obsessed. literally obsessed with this book. this book had a much different vibe from your typical romance books but it was still sooo good. the forbidden romance trope was executed so well and made this book so thrilling and interesting! when i say this book is impossible to put down, i mean that. this book is so captivating and really brought out a lot of emotion. i mean no words to describe how much i loved this book.
I am a big reader but this is the first Mia Sheridan book I have picked up. I have heard a lot about this author and know she is big in the Booktok world due to books such as Archer's voice. So when I saw the chance to read one of her books on Netgalley I jumped at the chance. This story is a story of two halves for me (and quite literally as its a duology). I loved the style of writing; I think Sheridan has a hauntingly beautiful way of writing but I'm not sure if the story hit for me. I will reserve final thoughts for after I have read the second book, but there is something niggling me. If you love a forbidden romance with twists and turns I would recommend this for you.
Also... beautiful covers for these two duology books!
Thank you Bloom Books, Mia Sheridan, and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
Now listen, Mia Sheridan is a top tier author for me. Her writing is so emotional, complex, and really grabs the hearts of those reading. This story was no different. I usually don't gravitate towards younger couples - as I tend to find them immature and have a hard time connecting with them - but this time around it simply worked.
The unique complex involving a cultish world really made this one to remember. If psychological aspects to stories interest you - or dystopian scenarios - this one will be for you. The intentional naive behavior really played into the storyline well (it made me think of other YA novels like the Divergent series).
Eden and Calder's romance will have you feeling so many emotions. But finding young people learning to break free of cultish shackles, fight for what is right, having hope, and truly starting to come in to their own is inspirational. I can't wait to see what comes next for this couple.
The depth, the character development, the romance, the suspense..... WOW
This book was great and I enjoyed all 400 pages and NEED MORE... I cannot wait to read the second book to this duet because I just need to know!
I don't typically love a young adult relationship because they're a bit un relatable for me, but their story is so unique and complex and Mia Sheridan was so good about making these characters naive because of their situation but not making me feel like 'mom' while reading.
I can't say enough good things.. If cults interest you, if you love some complex characters and you like when a novel 'goes there' PICK THIS UP!
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books for an early copy in exchange for my honest review!
Mia Sheridan does it again! She is by far one of my favorite authors. This book was incredible. If I am honest, I am not always a fan of a YA romance. Sometimes it's wonderful, sometimes, it's frustrating, and sometimes my "Mama Bear" comes out and I feel like I am their parent. This one was wonderful. It was so unique. I don't want to spoil, but the situation Calder and Eden is so different from. most YA novels. Yes, I loved the romance, but I also loved getting to understand their mindsets and motivations throughout the story. The story is complex but beautiful. I am so excited to read part 2 of this duet. I need to know.
This didn’t seem like the type of book I would be into initially, but man did I get into it. I found myself drowning in the world of Calder and Eden and I almost screamed when it ended the way it did. Can’t wait to read the second part of the duology
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this Advanced Readers Copy of Becoming Calder by Mia Sheridan!
Mia has been an auto-buy author for me since reading Archer's Voice. She has a very unique style of romantic suspense that hooks me immediately and leaves me invested until the very end.
I really liked Calder and Eden's story, the way that it started in childhood and developed into their young adult years. The setting in a cult was really intriguing, as it's a kind of taboo subject that people are fascinated by. It feels almost apocalyptic in the sense that life for them is the bare minimum-no electronics, no freedom, life is ruled by a select few. While their story is a romance, it is also a story of bucking "tradition", breaking free of the cult lifestyle, resilience, and hope.
Mia writes consistently powerful and addicting books. Great read, and I really look forward to book 2!
