A thrilling adventure to uncover past secrets and present day murder mystery. The Windmere luxury apartment is home to a diverse cast of characters. There’s a question of is the main character, an author who is currently working on a book about the mysterious apartment building, losing her mind or is everyone around her gaslighting ? This psycho-thriller has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and it was easy to get into. It had a feel of Only Murders in the Building to me.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

Rosie and Chad Lowan are barely making ends meet in New York City when they receive life-changing news: Chad’s late uncle has left them his luxury apartment at the historic Windermere. At first, the building and its eclectic tenants couldn't be more welcoming. But as they settle in Rosie begins to wonder if there isn't more to the Windermere than meets the eye. What is up with the ever present doorman? What is with all the cameras? She must get to the truth, and soon.
I was hooked by this story from pg. 1. I loved the spooky, potentially supernatural elements. The characters were well developed. The author even developed the apartment building, the Windermere into it's own character. I also loved the short chapters into the past that told the backstory of apartment 5B. If you like suspense, thrillers, and a touch of the supernatural you will LOVE this book. It has it all. I think this is my favorite Lisa Unger book to date!

Thanks to Netgalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and Lisa Unger for a copy of this book.

What a thrill! This book has all the twists you need for an exciting book! A couple inherits an upscale apartment and ALL the secrets that come with it. They also bring secrets of their own.

This book will definitely keep you guessing until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would highly recommend it to someone looking for a thriller, with lots of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out (and was admittedly disappointed with what I thought was the ending.) the final twist came!

Rosie and Chad inherit an apartment in Murrray Hill. It is worth a fortune and they know the apartment has history. Rosie starts seeing ghosts- of the building, in more ways than one. She starts to feel that she is being watched. She learns more about the past crimes in the building which make her even more unsafe. What happened in this lovely building and will this once sought after apartment become a dream come true or a nightmare. I enjoyed the story but found the ending to be not as satisfying.

Wow, what a story. Its set in an old apartment building in New York that has a dark history. It's twisty and suspenseful and kept my attention the entire time. The character development was well done and I loved reading the perspectives of the past. Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC.

I really liked this story! The characters were actually very interesting! There was something about this book though that made me tired idk if I’ve just got reading fatigue in general or what… But even after that it was such a twisty book that really had me wanting to know the answers. I’ve really enjoyed all the books by Lisa Unger that I’ve read so far!

Thank you NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and Park Row books for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This novel follows Rosie, a crime author embarking on her second book, and her husband Chad, a rising actor, as they navigate life in New York. The narrative unfolds in the aftermath of Chad's uncle Ivan's death, which casts a shadow over their world.

Devastated by the loss of Ivan, Rosie and Chad are astonished to inherit his luxurious Windermere Apartment. The story immediately prompts readers to question the moral compass of its characters, and strange incidents intensify the intrigue. Rosie's research on the fine line between supernatural and human occurrences adds an ironic layer to the unfolding events, leaving readers guessing whether the phenomena are of supernatural origin or human-made.

As the plot thickens, a series of mysterious deaths involving individuals connected to Rosie and Chad attracts the attention of detectives, who find themselves at the couple's apartment door. The book masterfully weaves suspense, keeping readers engaged and prompting contemplation on the nature of the occurrences.

In the midst of the unfolding mystery, the narrative explores the complexities of relationships and the impact of unexpected inheritances. The author skillfully keeps the audience guessing throughout the book, creating a gripping experience that compelled me to keep turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and found it difficult to put down.

Really didn’t see the ending coming. First time reading one of Lisa’s books and will definitely read the other!

This book was my least favorite of Lisa Unger's works. Surprisingly, it took me longer than expected to become engaged in the story. However, I found that listening to the audiobook was more enjoyable than reading the Kindle version. Vivienne Leheny's performance as the narrator was excellent. The premise of the book was promising, and it reminded me of the series "Only Murders In The Building". Although the story was entertaining enough to keep it moving, the plot was overdone. Additionally, I felt that the author could have delved more into the building's history and the chapters from the past. I also wish that more supernatural elements were incorporated into the story. Despite this, I enjoyed the story's creepiness and look forward to reading more of Lisa Unger's books..

Thank you to NetGallery and to both Harlequin Trade Publishing and Harper Audio for giving a copy of the book.

Speaking of wild, I think Lisa Unger takes the cake in this category. She has quite a backlist, but the first book that caught my interest was Last Girl Ghosted (which was published in 2021), but the title didn’t thrill me so I never picked it up.

Instead, I bought Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six from a Barnes & Noble book sale last holiday season, and it took me a year to read it. Which isn’t that uncommon for my reading habits.

Anyway, I read SCSS, LGG, AND Confessions on the 7:45 – all of which are juicy, a little bonkers, and so much fun. So, I’ll slowly be making my way back through her catalog.

Unger knows how to set a pace and keep you hanging on ‘til the end. You don’t want to get off the ride, as bumpy as it might be. Though some of her characters may be unlikable, they’re also entertaining, and some of the plot points are so outlandish they’re comical.

It’s kind of like watching the Scream movies. Some of the scenes are jump-scare-worthy but some are like, what the heck is this? Is this supposed to be scary or funny?

With her latest, The New Couple in 5B, man, she takes the reader on a whole different rollercoaster. I can’t say too much about it so as to not give away spoilers.

However, the “couple” refers to a modern-day couple who have just inherited a luxury apartment in New York and flashbacks to a couple from the 1960s. It follows the intermingling of Manhattan’s wealthy and the secrets they share.

It was clever storytelling to interweave both female-focused narratives, and they build up to a wild, fast-paced, don’t blink because you’ll miss something ending with twist after twist.

Because of the dual timelines and narrators, I’ll have to re-read this in hard copy. Sometimes e-books don’t translate quite the same just with how they’re laid out. Plus, as one of Lisa Unger’s newest fans, I’d like this one for the shelf.

If there was one thing I would change, it would be more in the beginning about Rosie’s family background. There were hints of it, but I was invested in the idea of whether they were telling or selling the future.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Rosie and Chad Lowan are artists, struggling financially, when they inherit a historic and valuable New York City apartment. This once in a lifetime opportunity does not arrive without baggage. The Windermere has a dark and troubled past - it is host to a number of horrible murders, accidents and suicides.

Is the building haunted? Does it truly house dark energy? Is it a beacon calling those home who are attracted to death and darkness themselves? Are there less ominous, natural explanations for these events?

Rosie herself originates from a family of mystics. A family she has left firmly in the past. Yet, she is no stranger to visions, premonitions, tarot cards, energies, and the supernatural. She cannot seem to escape it. But, what exactly is going on at the Windermere? Is she in danger? Can she trust her own reality?

Ghosts literally come out of the woodwork in this thrilling story and the bodies start to pile up.
Can Rosie uncover the truth about the Windermere before it’s too late?

This started very strong for me, especially the prolouge. Off the bat, I love the setting and paranormal vibes. I thought all the characters were very interesting. For about 75% of it, I couldn't put the book down. However, the ending got a little iffy for me and the twists didn't shock me. But I'd read other Lisa Unger books and recommend this book to. people who like paranormal-esque thrillers.

At first, I thought I was really going to be able to get into this book and I loved the pacing. However, it just felt like nothing was ever happening and it dragged on for way too long. I was wanting so much more to happen and everything, especially the ending, fell so flat.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of “The New Couple in 5B” in exchange for an honest review. I was interested in the plot of this book from the very start - a newlywed couple inherits a luxury apartment that they could never have afforded themselves. There was also a paranormal aspect to the story that I don’t think was fully necessary to include.

This was an easy read that I finished fairly quickly but I have a difficult time rating this book due to the fact that I didn’t really take a personal interest in the characters. I thought they exhibited some very immature and “basic” qualities that you expect in thrillers with them cheating, being in denial, and hypocrisy.

This book kept me entertained throughout but the ending fell a little flat for me personally. The premise of the book, an old NYC building with a mysterious past and even more mysterious occupants, was very intriguing. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there were deeper connections between the past characters and the present characters in addition to some more plot twists. The end was somewhat predictable and I felt like I was waiting for some big reveal that never came. I would also recommend this book to people who enjoy a supernatural element! Thank you for the ARC, I hope to check out some more books by Lisa Unger in the future as I enjoyed the writing and premise of the story and I'm sure her other titles might be a better fit for me.

I was expecting a straight mystery thriller rather than the supernatural, spooky twists. Overall, I just did not connect with the book and did not enjoy it. It was almost a DNF but a committed curiosity made me skip to the end for some resolution.

I just couldn’t get into this one. Thank you for the arc, maybe I can try something else by this author.

This was everything I love in a novel… spooky, thrilling, thought provoking, page-turning and definitely not at all what I expected. This novel utilized dual time frames, flashing back to past and present. I loved the historical pieces sprinkled in that made for an even deeper storyline. I’m absolutely adding Lisa Unger to my “must read” authors.
