Lisa Unger is an auto-buy author for me and should be for any fans of the thriller genre! When I saw she had a new book coming out, I was anxious to get my hands on it!

THE NEW COUPLE IN 5B tells the tale of a couple in a new home that has quite the story itself. Lisa Unger as always tells a great story. The book was twisty and the paranoia was palpable.

While this trope is common among thriller writers, the twist at the end was completely unexpected and Lisa Unger again proves why she is one of the best in this genre.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.

The New Couple in 5B, by Lisa Unger, is a twisty somewhat suspenseful novel melding the past and current times of a much sought-after address. Who and what can you trust? Are the people you meet real, can you trust your own memory? I am looking forward to reading more from this author! Thanks, NetGalley and the publisher, for providing me with the ARC ebook I read and reviewed. All opinions are my own.

This novel definitely gives 'Only Murders in the Building' vibes and it's a good read in a genre I'm not an avid reader in. There could have been more suspense scattered in because the basement scenes had my heart racing. Overall, this was a novel I read quickly and enjoyed.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of The New Couple of 5B.

I'm a born and bred New York and a fan of books set in NYC so I was pleased my request was approved.

After the death of his uncle, Chad and his wife, Rosie move into a swanky apartment in the historic Windermere in glamorous Murray Hill. But all is not rosy because the old building hosts some unwanted guests, and they're not leaving anytime soon.

First, there are not so subtle shades of Rosemary's Baby in the narrative, which I liked; the elegance and old world charm of an old timey fun timey building in NYC; creepy, old neighbors, the tone and setting setting the mood for something not quite right.

Rosie is a typical heroine in these genres; she survived an unconventional childhood and upbringing yet lacks basic street smarts and intuition.

She's not very interesting or compelling, trusts her husband, a man she has intense sexual chemistry with, but married after just a few months, despite her gut feeling something is off.

He's handsome and charming (like Guy in Rosemary's Baby), but isn't in the narrative much.

Second, I loved the supernatural elements of the story, and wished the author had expanded on those themes, such as incorporating the ghosts into the story more instead of Rosie just seeing apparitions.

Third, the ending was a little corny, how Rosie gets away from her captors. I know it's hard to take old people seriously as bad guys and it was a stretch for me.

I did like how Rosie's sister comes to NYC to see her, and the ending when Rosie reunites with her family.

I enjoyed The New Couple in 5B a lot more than the author's last book.

Lisa Unger never fails to keep my interest from page one until the end. She's a master storyteller. So cuddle up and get ready for a fantastic ride.

There is a lot to like about this book! It’s fast paced with surprise twists, set in a spooky setting with even spookier characters. I gobbled this story up in a day. I do wish that the apartment complex was more of a central character. I love when a setting is like a person, unreliable and untrustworthy. The basement scenes were perfection and gave me the creeps, but I wanted more. The husband was terrible! I don’t know what the overall timeline was meant to be, but I felt like everything happened to the MC within a couple of weeks. She really went through it! Overall, a good read!

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance reader version of Lisa Unger's newest thriller. New neighbors moving to creepy neighborhoods or apartments is a well used theme amongst thriller writers. Lisa Unger does it very well, but there were many similarities to other stories I've read recently. 4 stars because of her fabulous writing style, not the common thriller plot.

This was such a great, suspenseful thriller! I couldn't put this book down and I would love to read more by this author. You'll never guess the twist at the end!

Thank you to NETGalley for this advanced reader's copy. The book has a good premise and I was hoping to like it but unfortunately it was a little too smutty for my taste in books.

A skillfully crafted thriller encompassing a sinister history within a creepy building, complete with murders and suicides. Long-term residents harbor secrets, while spying neighbors and vigilant doormen add to the intrigue. The touch of the supernatural, coupled with a dual timeline narrative (present and past), creates an absorbing experience

It's just hitting me that Lisa Unger may not be for me. As I looked up my review of this I've noticed that almost all of her books are a 3 for me. Enjoyable but not ones that I would go out and recommend. As for the New Couple in B - let's be real, Chad completely sucks. And Rosie is such a wimp of a character it's hard to root for her. I found the plot to predictable and I was actually looking/hoping for a more twisty supernatural element at the end a la Lock Every Door by Riley Sager, so I was pretty let down. Again, didn't hate reading, but didn't love it either.

I was blown away by the ending of this book as it was totally unexpected. The story was fast paced and the characters believable. Definitely a 4.5 star read.

3.5 stars. After moving into an inherited apartment in NYC, everything seems too good to be true for a young couple, and (spoiler alert) it is! This book gave me Rosemary's Baby vibes and kept me guessing. The reasoning was a bit far-fetched for me, but it was an overall enjoyable domestic thriller.

When I started The New Couple in 5B I wasn't too sure about it. I was expecting a mystery thriller, but was getting a supernatural ghosty five (which is usually not my cup of tea). However, Unger does and excellent job of blending the mystery/thriller with the ghost/supernatural to create a tale that just pulls you in.

The New Couple in 5B is the story of a young struggling couple, Rosie, a writer, and. Chad, an actor, who inherit an apartment from Chad's late uncle. When they first move in everything seems to be going their way- beautiful apartment, a new book deal for Rosie, a big role for Chade, hoping to start a family of their own. But it doesn't take long before everything turns around. Murder, suicide, hauntings, it seems no one can be trusted.

The history of the building and all the characters is revealed over two time lines. At the witch from one time line to the other, I was left wanting more of the one ending but couldn't wait to see what would happen in the story line we were getting back to. As I said, ghost stories are just not my thing normally, but it was just the right amount in the book. I would highly recommend this book to fans of thrillers and supernatural tales.

First, I love books about books, or about authors writing books, so this fits my preferences perfectly. Rosie Rowan is an author married to an actor, Chad. Her husband's uncle leaves them an apartment in a historic building with quite the past. Rosie wants to explore the history of the building and the people that lived there for her latest book. The plot takes off when shortly after learning of the inheritance, Chad's cousin says the apartment should have been hers and winds up dead. Throughout the book we see glimpses into the past from the point of view of a woman that lived in Rosie's apartment. She sheds some light into things Rosie has seen and makes you question motives of various people in the building. Rosie's husband Chad is also called into question at various points in the book. It was interesting to see how the past and present wove together and wrapped up.
I had a great time reading the book. I would definitely recommend it.

I really enjoyed the story, the characters and the pace of the read. I loved the setting, the writing and frankly the whole book.

This is the first book I have read by Lisa Unger, although it will not be my last. I just ordered Confessions on the 7:45.

The book had a contemporary setting, a gothic twist of the ghosts of the past who had inhabited the building; and in the end all the characters were interesting and entertaining l

I can’t wait to see the overall reception to this fun, well written novel.

This wasn't my favorite thriller, I wasn't sure which character to root for! However, thank you NetGalley, for an advanced copy of this novel.

The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger

My rating:
3/5
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Rosie and her husband Chad just inherited a 5 million dollar apartment from Chad’s uncle who passed away. Rosie and Chad got very close to Chad’s uncle and took care of him before he passed away.

The building has a very dark past that seems to continue to get worse as the years go by. What is causing all of this horrible events to occur?

I wanted to love this book but unfortunately it lost me towards the end. I really enjoy Lisa Unger’s writing style but this story had way too much happening at the end that just seemed so obvious to me as a frequent thriller reader.

There were some really great parts in this book. I absolutely loved the perspective of Willa and the history of the building and what happened there in the past.

I liked the creepy haunted parts of the story as well. Overall it was a pretty good read but I started to get bored around 80% and things got a little too crazy right before the end.

If you like Lisa Unger, give this one a read! She is definitely one of my go to authors, but this one was not my favorite.

Thank you netgalley and HTP publishing for the ARC! This will be published in March of 2024!
