Thank you to NETGalley for this advanced reader's copy. The book has a good premise and I was hoping to like it but unfortunately it was a little too smutty for my taste in books.
"The New Couple in 5B" by Lisa Unger is a gripping psychological thriller that skillfully unravels the dark secrets lurking behind closed doors. Unger weaves a tale of suspense and paranoia as two couples become entangled in a web of deceit, jealousy, and obsession within the confines of a seemingly idyllic apartment building. The characters are meticulously crafted, each harboring hidden motives that keep the reader guessing until the final, chilling revelation. Unger's mastery of tension and atmospheric storytelling creates an immersive experience, making "The New Couple in 5B" a must-read for fans of psychological suspense, delivering a satisfying and haunting narrative.
A skillfully crafted thriller encompassing a sinister history within a creepy building, complete with murders and suicides. Long-term residents harbor secrets, while spying neighbors and vigilant doormen add to the intrigue. The touch of the supernatural, coupled with a dual timeline narrative (present and past), creates an absorbing experience
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger.
It's just hitting me that Lisa Unger may not be for me. As I looked up my review of this I've noticed that almost all of her books are a 3 for me. Enjoyable but not ones that I would go out and recommend. As for the New Couple in B - let's be real, Chad completely sucks. And Rosie is such a wimp of a character it's hard to root for her. I found the plot to predictable and I was actually looking/hoping for a more twisty supernatural element at the end a la Lock Every Door by Riley Sager, so I was pretty let down. Again, didn't hate reading, but didn't love it either.
I was blown away by the ending of this book as it was totally unexpected. The story was fast paced and the characters believable. Definitely a 4.5 star read.
3.5 stars. After moving into an inherited apartment in NYC, everything seems too good to be true for a young couple, and (spoiler alert) it is! This book gave me Rosemary's Baby vibes and kept me guessing. The reasoning was a bit far-fetched for me, but it was an overall enjoyable domestic thriller.
When I started The New Couple in 5B I wasn't too sure about it. I was expecting a mystery thriller, but was getting a supernatural ghosty five (which is usually not my cup of tea). However, Unger does and excellent job of blending the mystery/thriller with the ghost/supernatural to create a tale that just pulls you in.
The New Couple in 5B is the story of a young struggling couple, Rosie, a writer, and. Chad, an actor, who inherit an apartment from Chad's late uncle. When they first move in everything seems to be going their way- beautiful apartment, a new book deal for Rosie, a big role for Chade, hoping to start a family of their own. But it doesn't take long before everything turns around. Murder, suicide, hauntings, it seems no one can be trusted.
The history of the building and all the characters is revealed over two time lines. At the witch from one time line to the other, I was left wanting more of the one ending but couldn't wait to see what would happen in the story line we were getting back to. As I said, ghost stories are just not my thing normally, but it was just the right amount in the book. I would highly recommend this book to fans of thrillers and supernatural tales.
First, I love books about books, or about authors writing books, so this fits my preferences perfectly. Rosie Rowan is an author married to an actor, Chad. Her husband's uncle leaves them an apartment in a historic building with quite the past. Rosie wants to explore the history of the building and the people that lived there for her latest book. The plot takes off when shortly after learning of the inheritance, Chad's cousin says the apartment should have been hers and winds up dead. Throughout the book we see glimpses into the past from the point of view of a woman that lived in Rosie's apartment. She sheds some light into things Rosie has seen and makes you question motives of various people in the building. Rosie's husband Chad is also called into question at various points in the book. It was interesting to see how the past and present wove together and wrapped up.
I had a great time reading the book. I would definitely recommend it.
I really enjoyed the story, the characters and the pace of the read. I loved the setting, the writing and frankly the whole book.
This is the first book I have read by Lisa Unger, although it will not be my last. I just ordered Confessions on the 7:45.
The book had a contemporary setting, a gothic twist of the ghosts of the past who had inhabited the building; and in the end all the characters were interesting and entertaining l
I can’t wait to see the overall reception to this fun, well written novel.
This wasn't my favorite thriller, I wasn't sure which character to root for! However, thank you NetGalley, for an advanced copy of this novel.
The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger
My rating:
3/5
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rosie and her husband Chad just inherited a 5 million dollar apartment from Chad’s uncle who passed away. Rosie and Chad got very close to Chad’s uncle and took care of him before he passed away.
The building has a very dark past that seems to continue to get worse as the years go by. What is causing all of this horrible events to occur?
I wanted to love this book but unfortunately it lost me towards the end. I really enjoy Lisa Unger’s writing style but this story had way too much happening at the end that just seemed so obvious to me as a frequent thriller reader.
There were some really great parts in this book. I absolutely loved the perspective of Willa and the history of the building and what happened there in the past.
I liked the creepy haunted parts of the story as well. Overall it was a pretty good read but I started to get bored around 80% and things got a little too crazy right before the end.
If you like Lisa Unger, give this one a read! She is definitely one of my go to authors, but this one was not my favorite.
Thank you netgalley and HTP publishing for the ARC! This will be published in March of 2024!
I have enjoyed all of Lisa Unger's books. I loved the two timelines and was creeped out by the old macabre building. This story was a slow burn for me but I couldn't wait to figure out who did it. The ending was a little anticlimactic but I'd still recommend this to anyone who loves a spooky mystery.
Personally, this one just wasn’t for me. I only gave one star because I didn’t finish this book. Honestly, it felt like something that would be very up my alley but moved too slowly in the beginning to hold my attention. I’m sure it would be great for other thriller lovers though!
Wow - what a story. Rosie and Chad are moving into their new apartment in a prestigious old building in New York, ready to start a new chapter in their lives. Right from the start the story has an eerie undercurrent, but as a reader I couldn't figure out if it came from the unfaithful husband, the scheming doorman, an overactive imagination or the building itself - or even a mix of all those things. This book kept me at the edge of my seat, and I did not want to put it down.
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read and review this ARC.
A well written, thriller with all the elements, a creepy building with a history of murders and suicide, long term residents with secrets, spying neighbors and doorman, a bit supernatural at times and a storyline set in the present and one set in the past. Absorbing for me and I think my students will love it
The New Couple in 5B is another amazing book by Lisa Unger. The twist kept coming in this book and it made me never want to put it down. I loved seeing a glimpse into the past with the flashbacks incorporated in this book.
This book is about a couple who inherit an apartment with a history of murders, suicides, and deaths. The neighbors all seem nice, but there are a lot of secrets going on in this building. The deaths keep coming and everyone starts looking suspicious. It really keeps you on your toes as you read and try to figure out who is responsible for these deaths. I am so happy that I was able to receive an advanced reader copy of The New Couple in 5B through NetGalley. It was a wonderful book and I would definitely recommend it!
Wow, At the beginning this new one by Unger started as a slow burn. However, by the end, the twists were unexpected. Filled with indulgences, ghosts, and betrayal The New Couple in 5B is a quick read thriller that will keep the reader guessing on what is really happening in the historic Windermere Residence.
Lisa Unger has done it again! And this time, she's incorporated the likes of Only Murders in the Building. The way she creates characters who each have a complex backstory that usually intertwines, but you don't see it until the grand reveal is amazing. I also liked how there was a two stage reveal, like just when you thought everything was solved... think again!
I have enjoyed all of the Lisa Unger books I have read so far. I really wanted this and it’s a wicked good read. It’s a good idea to keep up with the list of characters from the beginning. Who is who.
Creepy setting in an old and macabre building , two timelines, ghosts, murder, scary feels are all here.
A young couple, Rosie and Chad, inherit an apartment in a very old building that still has a doorman and someone who runs the elevator for them. The place is set up with an intercom system so that the people in the apartments can just speak to the doorman and ask for what they need... which is very creepy. Rosie suspects he has the ability to listen in on conversations but she can’t prove it.
Rosie sees ghosts in the basement from the very beginning; she also sees visions of murders that have been carried out in this old building, including people who supposedly have jumped to their deaths. Or were they pushed? Everybody is a suspect at some point, so it was fun trying to figure out who did what. I thought this was a really good story and I highly recommend it.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and Lisa Unger for an ARC review. I was entranced.
