I enjoy Lisa Unger's books overall, but this one felt somewhat contrived and unrealistic to me. The supernatural/ghost aspects of it took away from the overall story, but that's just personal preference--if you enjoy those plots then you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. She did a good job of developing a wide cast of characters and I enjoyed the time period flashbacks. A good mystery but not of of Unger's best.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for allowing me to read a copy of this book. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them so I had to jump a the chance to read this. A couple inherits a posh apartment in NYC. The residents seem a bit "off" and there is even a voice activated intercom so a person can speak to the doorman. Seems odd but ok. I really enjoyed reading this book, it didn't knock my socks off but I was entertained the entire time and I quite enjoyed the ending.
4.5 ⭐ Dark and twisted, this book had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on and I literally thought everyone was a murderer at some point. There was a large cast of characters but the author did a great job on character development.
Just when you think you have it all figured out, you are wrong! Haha. I didn't see much of it coming, but I had a few right guesses! The pieces came together quickly and once you know one thing, everything else fell into place like dominoes.
If you like ghosts, murder mystery, or thrillers you will dig this book!
Thanks to netgalley for an eARC to review.
A twisty book that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to the end. I really enjoyed this book, it was a little bit fantasy/sci fi, but it was written well and I enjoyed the characters.
This was one of my most anticipated thrillers of the year and it gave me huge Lock Every Door vibes.
This one takes place in a well known apartment building called the Windermere that is home to many famous artists past and present. And it is no small thing that a young couple inherits an apartment in this grand building. But quickly things start to go bump in the nights and spirits are making their presence known. Will the new couple stay or become the next ghosts?
I realllly enjoyed this one surprisingly. I’m the first to admit I don’t like paranormal plot lines but this one was handled extremely well. The only thing I didn’t like was the past timeline. I felt like it could have briefly been summed up instead of taking over numerous chapters, it was so repetitive and boringggg. But overall, I really enjoyed this book and it’s perfect for spooky season
This is my favorite book by Lisa Unger so far. What I liked the most was that I kept doubting the sincerity of all the characters- I knew one character was responsible for what occurred (no spoiler) but I was never able to figure it out. There were so many exciting twists and turns and the book kept me guessing throughout. I could never have predicted the ending. If you want a suspenseful page turner, this is your book.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.
Thank you Net Galley for letting me read The New Couple in 5B. It was perfect for the upcoming spooky season . It sort of reminded me of the book The Paris Apartment
The New Couple in 5b centers around a couple named rosie and chad as they inherit a creepy haunted apartment with nosy neighbors. I liked how it also shifts in time to Willa Winters perspective as well who was a previous tenant
I loved all the ghost aspects and all of the twists .
However i was kind of confused at times
**. i also wish they included trigger warnings for miscarriage , infertility, pregnancy & child loss.. ** normally i would not read a book if they have these issues.
I really enjoyed this book. The concept was great, and I thought the author did a great job merging the two storylines. I did think that the ending twist was obvious to the reader. I will continue to purchase Unger’s books into the future.
This book was such a unique combination of thriller mixed with a ghost story. Chad and Rosie inherit an apartment on Park Avenue from Uncle Ivan. They move in and Rosie starts to see and experience things in the building. She is a writer so she decides to write about all the strange deaths that have happened in the building.
Once they move into the building deaths keep on happening. Rosie is wondering how they all tie together.
I loved the characters and how this story captures you on the very first page. The building is described in such vivid detail and it gives you a creepy vibe. This one was action packed and such a joy to read.
If you are looking for a suspenseful thriller- with a slightly gothic, rosemaries baby twist- this a definite read for you! This book will leave you questioning what’s real vs what’s imagined as Rosie tells us about her life and all she has seen and lived through. It’s a love story mixed with passion and questions, truth vs lies and what we tell ourselves to see the good in those we love. The setting in NYC is the perfect backdrop for all the history and tales of some of the most iconic buildings in the city.
This thriller had me confused and guessing until the end, and I LOVED it! A married couple moves into a fancy and historical apartment building after inheriting it from a deceased uncle. The pros: it’s worth a fortune, has a new security system manned by a doorman, and allows Rosie (a writer) and her husband (an actor) to pursue their passions. The cons: the doorman gives off invasive vibes, the building has a sordid past full of death and suicide, and Rosie may or may not be hallucinating the deceased residents during the day. On top of that, there is an unexpected murder close to home, and Rosie wonders who can she really trust. Definitely pick this one up if you are a thriller fan!
I really enjoyed this one. I read this just after reading 'Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six' and was interested to read more of Lisa Unger's work, and she's great at propelling a mystery/thriller plot forward. It feels like she can keep a lot of elements going at one time without leaving you hanging. This is a good one for fans of 'Only Murders in the Building.'
I had the opportunity from Netgalley and Park Row Books/Harper Collins to read an advancer copy of Lisa Unger's forthcoming book The New Couple in 5B. This book is a psychological thriller with a ever-present taste of the supernatural.
The book is the story of as true crime writer who has moved into a historical NYC apartment building, the Windemere, in which there is a long history of deaths, suicides and tragedy. Rosie and her actor husband inherit his uncle's apartment (5B) after the uncle dies. It is the perfect place to live for Rosie, who is writing her newest book on the history of the Windermere.
The book has numerous twists and turns. There are deaths, The building's doorman, Albi, seems to be always working, and the intercom system in the building seems to be such that there is no privacy - and someone is always listening.
This is a complex novel, and interesting, but at times feels like the story line gets convoluted. Is there anyone Rosie can trust? I suspect this will make for a good spring break beach read when it comes out in 2024.
This book definitely is a page turner! I don't want to give too much away, as there are surprises in every chapter, but suffice it to say that when Chad and Rosie inherit a Park Avenue apartment from Chad's late uncle, they have no idea what they are getting themselves into. A psychological thriller with elements of the supernatural (and a nod to Rosemary's Baby) this book will keep you guessing until the very end. Recommended for all public libraries.
The New Couple is 5B is a twisty, thrilling and atmospheric book. I love a good ghost story, and the telling of the haunted Windermere did not disappoint. Rosie is writing a new book about the tragedies of the building and gets caught up in a real nightmare. It’s a twisty story and you aren’t sure what is going to happen next, this kept me on the edge trying to figure it out. Great book!
I love Lisa Unger‘s books. This one doesn’t disappoint . a couple who inherits a creepy apartment. I love that theme ever since I read Rosemarys baby. Thrilling lots of twists developed characters. What more could you ask for? Thank you Netgalley and publisher, for providing this advanced copy of this wonderful book
This may just be one of her best ones yet! When Rosie and her husband Chad inherit a fancy New York City apartment from his uncle things are bad from the start. His cousin was under the impression it would be left to her as she was his daughter so animosity ensues. The apartment has an interesting cast of characters, all wanting to get to know the new couple, but why, and why is Rosie seeing people no one else does. Trying to write a book about the apartment and its inhabitants is taking a toll, and at what cost? I love a story with multiple POVs those are my favorites. If you love creepy, spooky books with Rosemary’s Baby/Lock Every Door vibe coupled with hints of supernatural and mystery then this is the book for you.
I enjoyed this book. The plot was intriguing and kept me engaged throughout. The characters were interesting and well fleshed out. The pacing was masterfully done and created a taut suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. A great read for fans of Lisa Jewell and Mary Kubica.
Lisa Unger’s latest psychological thriller with a ghostly twist kept me guessing until the end. Her flashbacks to the past gave greater dimension to the characters. Who can you trust? Is seeing truly believing? Fans of Lisa Unger will not be disappointed with her latest, The New Couple in 5B!
Lisa Unger has yet again written a simply marvelous novel. The New Couple in 5B tells the story of a young couple who by pure luck are named the recipients of a fabulous New York apartment just when they could use it most--Rosie, as a novelist, has an uncertain income, and Chad, as an actor, well, is also trying to make his way. Rosie is actually about to write a book about the building in which their apartment is located--after all, it's the location of many haunted stories. But these stories seem to be coming true, happening all around them. Rosie meets many mysterious residents, and soon realizes she can't trust anyone--maybe not even Chad. This book is full of twists and turns and a sprinkle of the beyond. It's a really great addition for Lisa Unger's library.
