This was a creepy, suspenseful read! I would recommend for fans of mysteries, thrillers and even horror. The writing did such a good job at making you feel claustrophobic and right at that setting.
I forgot to download this one in time, so naturally I bought it. I am a huge fan of the author.
OMG the things young women do for men.
So our girl is invited to go with her fiance to an African Wildlife Refuge. It is like a posh place with a spa and all sorts of adventure. Finance is applying to work there as a vet. They see a baby rhino and poachers come and almost take her. So exciting and scary.
Except, a man shows up and he is her ex! Her supposedly dead ex. He wasn't like mean to her but he came on way way way too strong so she broke up with him a few years ago. He stalked her and was a weirdo and she left the country to escape him.
Anyway, he is here on this adventure with them!
I loved this. It is weird and creepy and absolutely terrifying because I would rather be eaten by a lion than be in an isolated place with an EX like that guy.
This author always has amazing books and this was no exception. Thank you for the opportunity. Rijks never disappoints.
I liked the premise of this book, and there was a nice wee reveal towards the end that I didn't guess. However, I felt that the pacing was all off - we spent ages building up to any kind of dramatic event so it felt like there was a lot of setting the scene and it really slowed things down. Then, once the dramatic event had happened, a lot of the events were just too quick - like "bam, this happened, and then the characters moved on."
There were also a lot of sections that felt disjointed from the narrative - for example, one section where there are a lot of facts about rhino poaching. It took me temporarily out of the story and thinking "ah its nice that the author is trying to raise awareness."
There were also a few inconsistencies - characters were told not to walk to their tents without someone accompanying them, but Anna did it more than once. Or Anna's swift decision to ask her company to move to France, which didn't fit with any of her characteristics or actions til that point.
However, it was a good time of a book and a quick, distracting read, which is exactly what I wanted at the time I read it.
Thanks to Netgalley for the eARC of this book.
This was a fast and intense read. The suspense and the twist had me on the edge of my seat heart pounding. I loved the fact that it was set in South Africa and the author gave very vivid descriptions. My first by this author certainly not my last. Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC in exchange for my review.
This was such a good book. Great characters (even the ones I despised) and good story. Excellent pacing. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
It’s so quiet at the lodge. But if you listen very hard, you can hear the screams.
Very fast paced and intriguing novel that kept me wondering and guessing.
A thriller in a game reserve in Africa ? Hell yes ! The setting of this book was so freaking awesome, I've never read any books set in an African Safari. Was it the best book ever no, but was it highly entertaining definitely yes !
I really enjoyed the vibes of the book and the setting, it really was such a cool setting and it was really well done. We got a glimpse of all the African animals out in the wild and I was here for it. The setting was truly the strong point for me in this book.
The characters were very one dimensional and just meh, I felt no connection to any of them. Their relationships with each other were also not genuine to me, they didn't seem to have real feelings for each other and it was hard to root for anyone. Also, the brother/sister relationship was a bit weird to me, it was just too much.
I also had a bit of an issue with the writing, it was repetitive, it wasn't grabbing me as much as I wanted to and it fell very flat for me. The twists in this book were really great though, I wasn't expecting them, so that definitely peaked my interest in finishing it.
It was honestly a good thriller with a great setting, not my favorite but it did what it had to do in entertaining me ! Give it a shot and see for yourself !
✨️Thank you to a @netgalley & @inkubatorbooks for my free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This domestic thriller is set at a game reserve in South Africa. Anna accompanies her fiancé, Joel, who is interviewing for a position as veterinarian. She can't imagine relocating to such a remote location, but it's his dream job and he's promised her luxurious accommodations and the trip of a lifetime. She's worried about animals and their open sided tent and making her way on dark paths at after dark. The place has real dangers...then she finds herself face to face with her toxic (and supposedly deaad) ex who is staying at the lodge with his new girlfriend. I absolutely loved this one.
Absolutely loved this pychological suspenseful read. Highly recommend for a quick exciting read. I will have to add this author to my must reads
This was wild, I flew through it as it was quite suspenseful and crazy how it all worked out. At first I wasn’t sure where it was going, but definitely enjoyed the ride. We start off with Anna in a toxic relationship, and Clayton is quite a gem that’s for sure. She moves on and meets veterinarian Joel, and shortly after they get engaged he is in the running for his dream job on a game reserve in South Africa. When they go down together to interview, Anna is looking forward to a relaxing holiday. But it takes a turn when she realizes Clayton is also a guest at the lodge. He is there with his new girlfriend and all seems well, but something tells her it is not as it seems, and turns out she is right. I will leave it at that, because you must read this to find out what happens on your own. It was a perfect combo of setting, crazy characters, suspense and twists, and I could not get enough. This was just fantastic, and I one hundred percent recommend it.
Thank you to Inkubator Books and NetGalley for the digital copy to review.
Ooooohhhh! This book got me good. Full of twists and turns The Lodge by Miranda Rijks did not hold back. The anxiety I felt reading this story while the reader is stuck in a remote safari reserve with the characters and nowhere to go and no way to turn for help left me on the edge of my seat. Every time you think there couldn’t possibly be another twist, another thing that goes wrong, another person who isn’t involved/effected, you get smacked with another surprise. This book had a shocking conclusion and can easily be read in one sitting.

This personally wasn’t a book for me but I suggest that you for your own opinion.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for providing me with this copy.
This was amazing. The story had my full attention and i could not put it down.
Anna is happily engaged to Joel that works as a vet and specialise in big animals. He gets the opportunity for an interview for his dream job in a game park in South africa. And al the expenses are paid for.
Reluctantly Anna joins Joel for his travel. The Lodge and the grounds they will be staying at are stunning.
Until she meets the other guests, one being her ex boyfriend Clayton, a man she believed was dead.
Can this be a coincidence or does Clayton have secret agenda?
This was truly a wild ride, and not at all predictable.
This was a decent book. I loved the twists and it was fast paced and easy to read. Thank you netgalley for making this book available to read.
A really great and intriguing read. I loved the characters and the story. Will look out for more from this author.
The Lodge was full of great twists and character development. The author did a fantastic job describing the scene of the lodge throughout the book. At times it felt I was really there. It was captivating and interesting.
The one critique I have is that the ending felt somewhat rushed. I would’ve liked to have seen that play out somewhat differently. Perhaps more explanation of the reason for the character choices.
Overall, it is a 4/5 star book. I would definitely recommend it to others to read. Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC.
After a toxic relationship with Clayton, Anna rebuilt her life with her fiance Joel. When Joel is headhunted to possibly become the vet of Twivali Safari Reserve, when they arrive at the lodge Anna sees that Clayton is also there and it doesn't seem like a coincidence.
It says it is set in South Africa, but where in South Africa the only clue is that it must be somewhere in KZN as that is where the couple flew into, but where in KZN. They called the airport Durban Airport and not by the correct name of King Shaka International Airport.
I like that the author discussed the issue relating to poaching as it is a serious problem in South Africa and other African countries, not only with relation to Rhino's but also to Elefants.
The name of the town Franschhoek was also misspelled as Franshoek.
Never ever under any circumstances compare a Braai to a BBQ.
Over all the book was very enjoyable and tense and I would look forward to read a book by this author again.
Joel, who is a vet, and Anna are planning their future together. Joel gets an invite to interview for a job at an African Safari. Anna goes along with Joel as he learns about what could be his future job. This should be an exciting time for the couple, but then Anna runs into an ex on a secluded reserve.
It took me a chapter or two to get into but once I did it was a good read. There were many twists and turns but the ending seemed a little far fetched for me.
She expected the holiday of a lifetime, she got a trip to hell.
Anna is happy with her partner Joel and when he is offered a chance of his dream job on a game reserve in South Africa she goes with him to see if they can start a new life there. Her new life soon meets her old when she discovers her ex Clayton is at the reserve, she’s escaped from him once but will she be able to again?
This is one of my safe go to authors and yet again she delivered. If you want a book you can’t put down then add this author to your list.
