An amazing book for young nature and animal lovers. The gorgeous colour illustrations show the coyotes in their natural habitat as well the little girl Diana and her grandfather enjoying the outdoors. The "Facts about Coyotes and How You Can Help Them Survive" pages at the end give valuable information that will make kids to care more about the world around them and appreciate wildlife and the need to protect species like coyotes.
A children’s book about coyotes co-authored by Barbara Kingsolver?! Sign me up! This gorgeous storybook depicts two parallel journeys into the Appalachian forest, one for a young coyote pup, and one for a young girl. Both learn about wildlife and finding food for survival and their respective places in the food web, as well as some observations about each other, in this lovely tale that teaches the importance of predators in a healthy ecosystem.
Paul Mirocha provided absolutely gorgeous illustrations for the book.
Thank you Lily & Barbara Kingsolver, Paul Mirocha, The Gryphon Press, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
With incredibly beautiful artwork and illustrations this book tells the story of both a young girl camping in the woods with her grandfather and a young coyote pup going on the first hunt with his aunt.
The story was a really lovely one, very detailed and such a nice one to read.
Animal lovers especially are really going to love this one.
The artwork is gorgeous and highly detailed down to the point I find something new every time I look at it. The story is relatable for kids while teaching crucial lessons. This was a wonderful tale I'll definitely be including in lessons from here out
I was instantly drawn to this book because of my oldest son. He has loved nature for as long as I can remember, and this seemed like the perfect book to share with him. Before I finished reading I knew I was right - this is a book he would adore. Beautifully illustrated, I can imagine all my boys studying each page, hunting for hidden animals and tiny details as they often do.
Beyond the beauty of this book, though, is a fascinating and entertaining story all my children would love to hear. Focusing on inter-generational relationships, the reader is led through two different story lines through a human grandfather and his granddaughter, and Auntie Coyote and Coyote Pup. Their worlds are equally intertwined and beneficial for sharing the coyote's story; the elder of each group leads with grace and kindness, imparting wisdom on their loved ones, while allowing for mistakes and learning opportunities. The focus of this story is largely on the importance of coyotes, and how they benefit our world. This point is emphasized at the end of the book through additional notes, and, if you've read any of my other reviews, you know I love additional content. It helps further my education, and answer some of the many, many questions I will most assuredly receive from my children throughout our read.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and cannot wait to hold a physical copy in my hands so I can share it with my children. Thank you again for the opportunity.
(Please note: I have not published this to my Bookstagram page yet. If it's possible, I would love an approved picture for my Instagram post, but if not, I can compose a general ARC picture before I post. Thank you.)
This picture book is co-written by well-known author Barbara Kingsolver and her daughter. The book has two main things going on: the first is about a young coyote learning about hunting and the second is about a young girl learning about nature and how animals help the environment. The pictures are lovely and message is delivered in a way that engages one to learn more about our natural areas. I can see caregivers reading this book to children or older children reading this on their own. I look forward to this book coming out.
Lovely look at coyotes and human relationships to the wild. "Coyote's Wild Home" tells two parallel stories—one of a young coyote, just beginning to learn about the world outside its den, and one of a young girl, also learning about the wild that exists outside her usual borders.
This is written for slightly older picture book readers, or to be read by adults who don't mind a longer read—there's a fair amount of text as the book shows readers what a young coyote's day in the woods might look like versus a young camper's. It's a love letter to the wild, and the end of the book provides more facts about coyotes and why they're important to the environment.
The illustrations of the woods and the coyotes are gorgeous and rich. I don't like the illustrations of the humans quite as much (I think something about the girl's depiction reminds me of that eerie quality of AI art), but the level of depth on the trees in particular is fantastic. A good summer read, especially if you're planning to get out into the woods with young kids anytime soon!
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
Lily Kingsolver's debut children's book "Coyote's Wild Home" is a collaborative effort with Barbara Kingsolver and illustrated by Paul Mirocha. Coming out this October through The Gryphon press, this is an informative book about living alongside coyotes and their pivotal place within the ecosystem.
Mirocha has illustrated each page with beautiful, lifelike drawings of the animals in their natural habitat. Each image is detailed enough that one can pick out other native animals and plants, along with animal tracks, and even scat. These pictures are a wonder to look at, and will provide a wealth of information to the observant reader.
The information within the book allows readers to start to pick up on the nuances of the illustrations, as well as the nature around themselves. It dispels common myths about the dangers of coyotes, while also encouraging the reader to not feed them or interact with them. Knowledge is often an antidote against fear, and helpful information at the back of the book gives ideas about how to interact with the nature around you - as well as the natural history of the coyote and how the species has spread east.
This is a great book, and I can't wait to see what else Gryphon Press puts out in the future.
I love this book. The messaging and illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I personally love wolves and dogs so much. Thank you for creating this beautiful piece of art.
Title: Coyote’s Wild Home
Authors: Lily & Barbara Kingsolver
Release Date: October 17, 2023
Coyote’s Wild Home follows the parallel journeys of a coyote pup and his aunt and a young girl and her grandfather. Both youngsters explore a new environment while learning from their more experienced relatives.
The cover of this book immediately drew me in with the Coyote’s vivid yellow eyes. I hoped the cover was just a hint of how gorgeous the illustrations would be and I wasn’t disappointed! I found myself admiring and examining the illustrations before and after reading the text passages. These illustrations will help young readers to recognize the beauty present in nature.
I equally loved the stories of Diana and her grandfather and the wolf pup and his aunt. The text was informative while also managing to tell an interesting story. I especially appreciated the emphasis about respecting nature and sharing the space with wild animals. The authors include additional information about coyotes at the end of the text for those readers that want just a little more. This book sets the stage for deeper conversations about conservation and environmentalism.
Thank you to NetGalley and The Gryphon Press for the opportunity to review an eARC of this title!
It's been a while since I read a children's book and this was lovely. Coyote Pup is out with his aunt learning how to hunt and the story alternates with Diana and her grandfather out for a day of fishing. The illustrations are beautiful and I loved the message about protecting nature.
Thank you to Netgalley and Gryphon Press for providing me a digital copy.
I just saw this and it is by Barbara Kingsolver and her daughter, Lily Kingsolver. It’s a book for young readers and sounds educational, but adorable. Read this new and unanticipated book by an author I just read as I didn’t expect Barbara Kingsolver to collaborate on such a Beautiful Book about Coyotes and the Balance of Nature.
First, the book is done so exceptionally well with each page painted. It looks gorgeous and gives a nice and natural feel. The idea is to learn ecological stewardship and the importance of caring for all animals. This is Great for Young Learners, but also anyone wanting to learn more about the role of Coyotes.
Diana and the Grandpa are going fishing in the forest. He explains that you take what you need and no more. It is important to understand our role in nature. Diana sees the paw prints of many animals. Nature and animals have a delicate balance.
Coyote Pub is finally old enough to go out of his den with his Auntie. He is learning to find prey. This is essential that a predator by available to hunt for other animals or the smaller animal will get out of control and either starve or destroy the forest. This is what happens when the delicate balance is distributed. Wild animals have learned to survive and know their roles.
Humans should not be disruptive or involved in killing Coyotes. They have migrated from the Northwest of the US, to the North and East, and finely Southern Appalachia.
The story and book are magnificent. I especially liked at the end there were Notes about Coyotes. That I thought was very informative. Websites were provided to tell us how to safely live with Coyotes and protect them from needlessly being killed.
Thank you NetGalley, Lily Kingsolver and Barbara Kingsolver, and The Greyphon Press for a copy of this book. I always leave reviews of books I read.
