Another excellent installment in this cozy mystery series! I’ve been with Kitty from the very beginning and continue to enjoy her adventures and journey. I like how this story takes her and Matt off on their own, away from everyone they usually rely on as they sleuth. The new characters added some interest. I particularly liked the time spent with Aunt Effie and would love them to head back and visit her soon (ages escape me, but Effie and the Inspector - could it happen?).
I found the writing engaging and easy to read. I got through this in just a few hours. The mystery allowed for many theories; I considered it very well done.
My gripes: fragments instead of full sentences, grammatical errors, punctuation errors (especially comma usage). I don’t know if these are edited on the final publication but they do take away from my reading enjoyment here.
This wonderful book set in Yorkshire was a fun read. I loved the characters and the way Dixon described the town and the scenery. I love a book where I can be taken away an put into the setting for a little while and this one is that type. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
I so hoped this one would be a return to the groove for this series, but not for me. I will be taking a break from this series for a while. The death and resolution was predictable and brutal. It just didn't feel cosy for me. The two leads don’t have the chemistry they had before and the lovely townspeople are missing as the mystery is away from home
I love curling up with these Kitty Underhay (now Bryant) mysteries. The setting is always wonderful: usually it describes 1930s Devon but this story was set in a small village in Yorkshire.
The characters and the continuing story line are entertaining every time.
While Matt and Kitty are on their honeymoon, they visit the village fair in Matt’s aunt’s small village. And of course, they walk right into a dead body.
Everyone in this small village seems to have a secret they want to keep hidden, but Kitty wouldn’t be Kitty if she didn’t solve the mystery.
Good instalment in the series and I absolutely loved the character of aunt Effie!
Kitty and Matt go to his Aunt Effie's in Yorkshire for a belated honeymoon. While there they get embroiled in murders in the quaint village
Book 13 in the series and Kitty and Matt Bryant are married and finally off on their honeymoon! I missed reading the last two books in the series and need to get to them soon because from all the hints in this book, Kitty and Matt were in serious trouble in their last outing! And I can't believe I missed them FINALLY getting married!!
This book was as fun reading as the other ones I have read so far and we find Kitty and Matt in a new village setting this time when they decide to spend a part of their honeymoon with Matt's Aunt Effie in the Yorkshire countryside. There are just in time to enjoy the annual village fair and getting to know the village residents but murder is never far away wherever Kitty is! Soon, Kitty and Matt have to put on their sleuthing caps again to try and solve two murders before their vacation time in Yorkshire is up.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Helena Dixon for the e-Arc of the book.
So the couple finally get to take a break, it's their honeymoon, but unsurprisingly they are soon on a case and digging deep into the characters in the Yorkshire village to uncover whodunnit. As usual, nothing is quite as it appears with a few red herrings along the way.
I's unsure why, but I didnt enjoy this one as much as those set around the hotel, with family and friends. It felt a bit apart. Perhaps a relocation back to the hotel? Or the reintroduction of a broader plot? I'll be interested to see the direction this series takes going forward.
I am a fan of the series, the author's writing style and the characters in this series, having read all of the books to date. This time it's three out of five for me. With thanks to #NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for my free advanced reader copy to review in exchange for an honest opinion
Kitty and Matt are on holiday to Yorkshire as part of their belated honeymoon. After almost dying in a fire during their last case, they are looking forward to the peace and quiet of the countryside. However, when their dog Bertie gets away from them during the village fair they stumble upon a dead body. They could end their vacation and head home. Kitty's inquisitive mind won't let her rest so when they are retained by Matt's aunt's neighbors to help clear their name, Matt and Kitty are once again on the case!
Murder at the Village Fair is book 13 in the Miss Underhay series. If you haven't started this series yet, it would be a great one to start with. Since Kitty and Matt are on vacation and not at home, the only character that we've met previously that appears in this book is Matt's Aunt Effie. She is a minor character in this book as she hosts them in her home.
I really like Kitty and Matt as a sleuthing team. They work really well together and even though the 1930s didn't see a lot of working women - particularly once they were married - Matt not only accepts Kitty as a business partner he encourages her passion.
The mystery is good. Since we don't know the villagers we don't know any more than Kitty and Matt. It is fun to gather clues along with him and try to guess who the murderer is.
My review is published at Girl Who Reads - https://www.girl-who-reads.com/2023/08/murder-at-village-fair-by-helena-dixon.html
Can you believe this is number 13 in the series? And it's definitely not unlucky, as this is another fun and engaging case for Kitty and Matt, enjoying (if that's the word) a belated honeymoon. Dead bodies, local gossip and intrigue, fans of the series will lap this up. A worthy 4.5 stars, as ever.
(With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this title.)
Away with her new husband, Matt, Kitty Underhay happens upon yet another body. This was to be a nice getaway for them, as they are actually honeymooning and visiting his family. Although she would rather leave the police to it, Kitty can’t leave things as they are, and wait for the them to discover who the murderer was. As an accomplished amateur sleuth, she does what she can to identify the cause of the woman’s murder, and who the responsible party is.
Kitty is a delightful character and I am so glad she has married Matt. As the setting is in the 1930s, the time period is enjoyable as well. This cozy mystery series has been enjoyable from the start and I love how Kitty proves so adept at solving murders.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Kitty and her new husband Matt are trying to recover emotionally and physically after their last involvement with a murder case. They go on a late honeymoon, staying with Matt's aunt. But death is never far away from the pair and during a day out at the village fair, they discover a body and are called upon to investigate...
Murder at the Village Fair is the 13th book in the Kitty Underhay series set in the 1930s. There are mentions of events in previous books but no spoilers about the crimes or criminals.
Kitty and Matt are still getting used to married life and are grateful to have survived their last involvement in a murder case. But their private investigator skills are needed when a woman is poisoned at the village fair and the host calls upon the pair to prove his own innocence by catching the real killer.
There are plenty of suspects as potential motives are revealed. Little clues and connections between characters need to be investigated to determine the relevance to the case. I was kept guessing, suspecting everyone at some point or another! Kitty and Matt have a supportive lead detective and develop a mutually respectful professional relationship. I also enjoyed the inclusion of Matt's aunt who is a fab character alongside their dog Bertie for some gentle comedy.
Murder at the Village Fair is an entertaining cosy historical murder mystery.
Kitty Underhay is now more known as Mrs Kitty Bryant and along with her new husband, Matt and their faithful dog, Bertie have travelled to Yorkshire for a summer break and a bit of a honeymoon. Surely murder will not follow them and they can have a well deserved rest?
Of course if that was the case there wouldn’t be a book. Kitty and Matt discover the body of the fortune teller at the local Village Fair, seemingly poisoned by something in her tea?
Knowing everything about all the villagers, but not what might happen to them, surely someone there has the answer?
Will this Inspector be more amenable to Kitty and Matt looking into things, than the one they have left behind in Devon?
Another cosy mystery in this series and it was nice to see Kitty and Matt away from their normal setting, but I did miss Kitty’s relationship with her amid and friend Alice.
If you want something light, that is relatively paced and has something terribly British about it, then this series of books is just for you. I look forward to continuing my adventures with them.
This series is such fun and so entertaining, all while being a mystery. I know hard to believe, right? If I throw in a few twists, would you believe me now? This is book 13 and I have drifted in and out of the series and can always pick up and read whichever book I have without any difficulty.
Our main characters are off on holiday and of course there is a murder. I love the setting of this series. When the world was simpler and more relaxed with actual human interaction. I also like the village. it is lively and almost ike and additional supporting character. I like that in addition to the mystery there is also personal time for the couple. I was guessing for a while before I eventually figured it out, but wasn’t certain until the reveal.
If you are looking for an easy to read cozy mystery, you should definitely check out this series. It won’t disappoint.
Summer of 1935. Kitty and Matt enjoying a delayed honeymoon staying with an Aunt in idyllic and very comfortable surroundings. It is everything that one thinks of an idyllic English countryside, the weather and farmlands all beautiful.
A fete being held is a highlight of the summer and the entire village is involved. When Miss Crowther is found murdered alias Madame Zara, fortune teller the first dimming of village allure begins. Kitty and Matt are the people who discover the body and their investigation, alongside the local detectives uncover deep secrets, simmering resentments and secret relationships which must be kept secret. The killer seems to be always one step ahead and when another attempted murder happens, followed by another murder we know the killer is desperate and is now reckless.
Kitty and Matt risk personal danger to uncover the secrets in this small village and bring justice for the victims.
Very pleasant for readers this is reminiscent of more classic mystery murders.
Kitty and Matt are finally on their honeymoon. They have gone to stay with Matt's aunt in the Yorkshire Hills. They have arrived just in time for the Village Fair, and are looking forward to attending. This year it is an Indian theme complete with an elephant, snake charmer and more. The local busy body always mans the fortune teller booth, but it seems someone didn't like her nosey ways and Kitty and Matt discover her lifeless body. It is determined that she was poisoned. Matt and Kitty are fine leaving this investigation to the police, but they are hired by Colonel Brothers to make sure the culprit is found leaving him and his wife, unscathed. They nose around, talk to people and figure out a few things, sharing all they know with the local police. Things heat up when a man is attacked and injured and another found dead. Who is behind these crimes and when will another death occur?
I think it is clear that being in the vicinity of Kitty and Matt is not safe. They seem to stumble onto victims wherever they go. This mystery has a lot of suspects, as it seems that Miss Crowther, the victim, was nosey and into everyone's business. Was she blackmailing anyone? Who hated her enough to kill her. Matt and Kitty, along with their dog, Bertie, are able to find clues that the police miss and just seem to ask the right questions. I enjoy how Kitty and Matt work together and they have such a wonderful relationship. They can read each other so well and this always helps them to bounce ideas off one another and sort things out. I missed some of the regulars from the Dolphin Hotel, as this mystery was set elsewhere, but there were a lot of secondary characters that filled out the story and added to the suspect pool. I loved Aunt Effie. She was a wonderful hostess, and in her own way, helped to solve the crime. I thought I had this one figured out, but once again, I was wrong The culprit surprised me, but looking back over the story, it fit well. Well done Helena Dixon. You have penned another fun and interesting mystery.
Another fun installment in this cozy mystery series.
Having read all the previous books, I can't imagine trying to read this out of order so do begin at the beginning so that you can fully appreciate the many different situations that Kitty Underhay - now Mrs. Matthew Bryant - has faced.
It is summer, 1935, and the newly married couple is visiting Matt's aunt in Yorkshire. A village fair is underway when the festivities are interrupted by murder. The dead woman was not very popular in the community, so there are many suspects. Matt and Kitty are asked to investigate to protect the reputation of one of the local citizens.
I enjoy the period details of this Golden Age murder mystery series and the writing style. The characters have become like old friends who are always great to visit. Easy to read and fun to guess who is guilty with no shortage of motives, means, and opportunity.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. Kitty and Matt are great characters and seem so in love. I did second guess myself many times over who might be the murderer.
I will definitely read other books written by Helena Dixon and other books in the series.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Murder At The Village Fair' by Helena Dixon.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Helena Dixon, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 10th August 2023
This is the eighth book I have read by this author. It is also the thirteenth book in the 'Miss Underhay' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Murder On The Dance Floor', 'Murder At The Wedding', 'Murder In First Class', 'Murder At Elm House', 'Murder At The Country Club', 'Murder At The Charity Ball' and 'Murder At The Beauty Pageant' which I would highly recommend.
This novel consists of a prologue and 25 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book was very well written and I do believe some research went into it as everything linked correctly in with the era it was set in. It is a real bug bear for me when I read a historical novel and the author hasn't done their research and gets basic information mixed up so well done Helena!! It was very well written and I found the synopsis and the cover fitted the storyline perfectly, The descriptions were great and it really felt as if I was in the story.
Yet another hugely successful addition in this fantastic series by the very talented Helena!! The storyline was very interesting and fast paced. Helena completely emerges the reader into the storyline and as always Helens evocative writing skills brings the atmosphere, sights sounds and characters to life ensuring the reader is completely sucked into the storyline seeing and feeling everything the characters are. I really enjoy the fact that this series is set in the past and the storyline really suited that. It really is a nice cozy mystery that will keep you guessing throughout. At no point did I suspect who was doing what or why so a huge well done there Helena!!! I have read many a mystery and find that I am working out the killer/perp quicker every time and there's nothing worse than working out who did what when your need even half way through a book. Not only is this quite a suspense and action filled mystery but there was just the right amount of quirkiness, laughter and romance to give it a nice mix!!! It is one of those books that once I started it I just could not put it down and devoured it in several hours!! A fun, addictive, unputdownable cozy crime mystery. This is a fantastic series and if you have never read any of Helena's previous books then you are definitely missing out. I, personally, would like to add that I think each storyline has got better and better which is a very rare thing for a series.
Although this is the thirteenth book in the series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I am really become invested in all of these amazing characters since the first book I read in this fantastic series and I really enjoy meeting Kitty and her fantastic and quirky personality each and every time!!! In fact all of the characters have their own individual personalities which worked really well with each other. They have all become like a family to me and I always hate saying goodbye to them at the end of the book. I am looking forward to meeting them all again in the next 'episode' of Mrs Bryant's adventures which I'm sure will be just as exciting as this one!! I also adore the fact that we get to see more of not only Bertie the dog who made an explosive entrance in 'Murder In First Class' (so make sure you don't miss out on that amazing page turner!) but we also have another animal addition in the form of a gorgeous kitten called Rascal from book 11 in this fantastic series 'Murder At The Beauty Pageant'. I also absolutely loved Matt's Aunt Effie who we get to meet in this book, such a larger than life character!! A fantastic group of characters for yet another fantastic addition to an addictive series!!! Here's to meeting them all again in the next book 🥂!!!
Well done Helen on yet another fantastic success and here's to the next addition to an addictive page turning series 🥂!!!
Overall a perfect mix of mystery, crime, romance, laughter and quirkiness which kept me turning the pages late at night!!
286 pages.
This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited and £7.99 in paperback (at time of review) via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Recently Married Kitty and Matt, decide to visit Matt’s family in Yorkshire, but while attending the village fair it won’t be long before the two find a body.
Soon half the village will have a motive for murder and it will be down to Kitty and Matt to find the murderer.
This was another great cozy crime to the series which was fun to read based in Yorkshire, There are several clever twists which left me on my toes and had me double guessing myself, Dixon is an expert in this genre and I look forward to reading more.
Although this is the thirteenth novel within the series it can be a stand-alone
First time reader from the author and this series.
I loved the story from cover to cover and read within 2 days. I would have loved to have started reading the Miss Underhay Mystery books from the beginning, but I am looking forward to reading the next ones.
The story follows along, I believe, with Kitty and Matt (now married) honeymooning at Matt's aunt place in the Yorkshire Hills. A visit to the village fair has uncovered a body and as private detectives, they had to investigate.
A splendid read!
