This was an adorable graphic novel that also featured difficult topics such as grief and loneliness. It follow Marjorie who takes over the family laundry mat after her mothers death, and deals with a depressed father and no friends at school. She then meets curious and sweet ghost Wendell, and they form a sweet friendship. I found this novel to be very realistic in the dialogue and emotions. I could pinpoint the feelings the characters were feeling and connect it to my life. I do think the ending was a tad rushed and I wanted to see Marjorie's mom make a ghostly appearance, but overall the artwork and storyline made for a perfect fall read.
This is a VERY adorable graphic novel and I highly recommend this to everyone! Wendell was definitely my favourite little bean and I really enjoyed how he tries to help (and eventually succeeds) Marjorie with running her laundromat. I think it also really tackles loss really well, which I think is super important for the book's demographic.
Sheets is so cute. I love this graphic novel about a girl who is trying to save her laundermat buisness. The colors are so vivid and add an amouins tone to the whole story. I feel in love with this littlw girl who is lonely after feeling the lose of her mom.
4 Stars!
HOW have I not read this sooner?! This was so unbelievably sweet, with also pretty hard topics. The art style was beautiful, and I was legit transfixed at the art style of how shiny the floor was.
Wendell is the sweetest soul who I just want to protect at all costs.
Thoroughly enjoyed!
Oh god! This graphic novel was seriously awesome! The art style was on point, and the main character's journey dealing with the loss of her mom hit me right in the feels. Plus, the ghost element was such a cool twist, and Wendell was just too darn adorable. Can't wait to see how their friendship blossoms. If you're looking for a quick read that tackles current issues like a boss, this graphic novel is a must! Highly recommend!
Ps: Writing this after reading the final book! God! It was amazing! Loved it!
It was such a cool read! I was interested in reading it for quite some time now, and I’m glad I finally got to it. The plot, simple, yet very engaging, is probably the greatest strength. I admit, I did not like the characters up until one point, but they’ve grown on me. Overall, the book is a good example of a middle grade graphic novel that can be read by anyone.
Sheets will definitely play with your emotions. The story looks at a child’s hidden life as she struggles to overcome loss and be the ‘adult’ in the household, and find a friend and support in a ghost. Thank you to Ono Press and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Wonderful storytelling, beautiful illustration, a cool ending—but, goodness me, so much sadness! Marj is lonely at school and lonely at home. She’s lost her mom, and the in-crowd at school is quite mean to her. Her dad is withdrawn and depressed, and, as a result, Marj has to carry more than her fair share at home—including running the family’s laundry business (?!). There’s also a villain who’s out to take over their property, and who keeps trying to sabotage the business. And then there’s the boy ghost…
There are some pretty heavy themes in here, including child and parent death, depression, grief and bereavement, loneliness, bullying, and then the one I couldn’t really bear—a child taking on far too much, really more than they ever should. It put me in a pretty blue mood myself, and that didn’t let up with the resolution by the end of the novel. Instead, I came away feeling really upset about Marj’s situation—and I’m not sure if, then, I would recommend this book for the presumed targeted demographic.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Oni Press for the DRC.
First off, this book had the cutest illustrations. I could not get over how perfect and beautiful they were. The story was emotional and I love what I felt after reading it. The characters are well written and developed and it was fun to go through life with marjorie.
In Sheets we meet Wendell, a ghost who wears a sheet, and Marjorie, a girl running her family's laundromat. The beginning of the book tells their individual stories before their worlds collide to create a beautiful story.
I just love how this book made me feel. It was the perfect emotional journey that left me thinking.
Okay I'm absolutely in love of the style of this author but the ghost, please, they're the mos cute and sad thing I've seen in a long time, I want to hug them.
So cute. So sweet. So quick.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Marjorie is a lonely teen who is currently trying to keep the family laundry business afloat, following the recent death of her mum as her dad can’t cope.
Wendell is a ghost struggling to cope with his new after life, who unknowingly sabotages the Glatt laundry….
Beautiful stylish illustrations, a quirky but likeable plot. I loved the movement between characters, memories and imagination. Will definitely be recommending to students at school.
What a surprising and remarkably moving middle-grade graphic novel. SHEETS is a heartwarming tale that explores timely and important topics such as trauma, loss, grief, forgiveness, bullying, and mental health struggles such as depression. Beautifully illustrated and brilliantly told, I highly recommend this memorable read!
Thank you so much NetGalley and Oni Press for this e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
A fun and creative YA graphic novel that deals with loss of a parent, grief, the stress of owning a business, and... ghosts! YA readers will love getting to know Majorie and her new ghost friend Wendell.
This story was heartwarming. I enjoyed reading it. I loved the art and how grief is written and the involvement of ghost. It was a lovely story that I would definitely want my son to read.
I was genuinely moved by this graphic novels. It has a great story line, a twist I did figure out almost immediately (I just always do) and a wonderful set of characters.
This was so heartbreaking and fun but also reflective of how grief is. I loved it.
The illustrations were honestly beautiful and the use of colour to reflect different places and timelines was excellent.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
This was a very sweet, quiet graphic novel about ghosts and dealing with grief. I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

I've long heard of Sheets by Brenna Thummler, but wasn't drawn to the marketing copy before; however, I'm so glad I was able to finally read it. Sheets is a beautiful exploration of grief and growth through the eyes of a young girl named Marjorie. At 240 pages, Sheets is not necessarily a long book (in graphic novel terms) but it packs so much story into each page while still giving the narrative plenty of room to breathe. It's a marvel, and this book would be an excellent addition to anyone's shelf.
I love graphic novels and have been desperate to read this series as soon as it was released.
The story follows Marjorie who is trying to navigate life after her mothers death. Having no friends she feels invisible sometimes. Until she meets Wendell, a sheet portraying the ghost of a boy who lost his life after drowning at age 11.
This story and illustrations were just beautiful. It portrayed real life brilliantly and will be a key story to read for those who are especially struggling with issues such as loneliness, bullying, death and grief, family, financial hardships, etc. Marjorie and Wendell were extremely likeable characters (Marjorie in this volume) and their friendship was so lovely to watch unfold.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel and I think it does a great job looking into the struggles that young people go through with growing up. I love the art style and I really liked the main character and the problems she was dealing with such as grief of losing her mum. I really enjoyed the ghost element and Wendell was adorable and can’t wait to see their friendship develop. I would recommend this if you want a quick read that deals with a lot of current topics very well. 5 stars.
