A treat of a book. These poems span millennia and give us such a host of different voices and sentiments that it's worth savoring the entire book more like a daybook, reading one poem a day. It's also interesting to understand the histories of each of these poems and the way their places evolved across literary canons. This anthology is further enriched by Kaveh Akbar's smart observations about each poem, particularly how exists in opposition to the "colonial impulse."
I'm a huge fan of Kaveh Akbar's work and was interested in what he would include as the editor of this anthology. This was a really well curated collection of poetry that I've dipped in and out of. The way that Akbar formatted this anthology was really approachable for poetry lovers and people new to poetry.
