I was able to read an ebook arc of this thanks to NetGalley. A fun romance. Great read. Would read more by this author.
Not only did I read this on net galley. But I bought the physical copy when I came out.
I will ALWAYS read and buy all of this authors books.
I will forever and always love this series. I have nothing bad to say about it and I will never say anything bad about it either.
I will cry and be mad when this series is over. I would rather this series to never end.
In this next installment of the Dark Olympus series we get the story of Eurydice, Orpheus and Charon. Eurydice is still healing from Orpheus’ betrayal, but can Charon be a big enough distraction to help her? Meanwhile, Olympus is basically on fire from outside forces and all of our favorite Olympians are trying to prevent the city from falling!
So admittedly this was tied with Cruel Seduction for lowest ranked in the series. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like either of them because they were enjoyable and helped move the underlying series plot along but I was not much interested in the MCs and their relationships. One trope used to create this particular relationship is one of my least liked tropes so that didn’t help. I was actually hoping for a different pairing.
If you’re reading the series you obviously have to read these to get the next part of the underlying plot. If you haven’t started or are just starting the series go into these last two knowing that I didn’t love them, but plenty of other people do
Another solid entry from Katee Robert. This one is much less politics-heavy, to my disappointment. Charon and Eurydice are a great couple, but Orpheus is too whiney for me to care about.
Orpheus, Eurydice, and Charon are our trio in this instalment and to be honest I’d have been happier without Orpheus. The was no come back or consequence for him and I’m not sure that was a good idea, I would’ve liked to have seen more payback.
I did however love Eurydice getting her own story and the chemistry between her and Charon. He is definitely one of my favourites, after hades of course. Look forward to seeing what Katee Robert has for us next.
Im obsessed with this series and there is nothing else to say about it. lol jk! I couldn't get enough of the characters and story line. it had me on the edge of my seat. I will forever be waiting for the next book in this series.
*deep breath* I have lowered my expectations further for every book and somehow they still get worse. It was a mistake to put these on the schedule they are on because the author can barely get together a believable romance with two povs, and now with three it's pretty much laughable.
Everything is so surface level with nothing to dig into and make any of the characters distinguishable not only from each other in the book, but from the others in previous books. And the poly romance stories? They make it even flatter. I may change my rating later because I'm feeling petty after finally finishing this, but honestly, this was the worst of the books because it was the most unbelievable. You cannot tell me that Eurydice would go through what she did, Charon watch her heal, and they would both be like, Orpheus get in bed with us, first chance they got. I genuinely hated how cheap and gimmicky it all felt, on top of this happening across literally 3 days. In what world?
I have been reading this series solely for Hera and Zeus's book but I don't think I can justify the struggle anymore.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
This one was fun because it really geared up to the entire series' overall climax, so I'm excited to see how that will turn out in the next books.
I enjoyed seeing Eurydice come into her own and speak up for herself in some tense situations. She has grown a lot since we first saw her in Neon Gods and I'm hoping to see her in some of the action that's to come in the series. I felt that Orpheus truly changed and totally redeemed himself. And I just wish we had more Charon because he was probably my favorite from this story. Loved this cute little trio and their love for each other felt genuine.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
3.75⭐️
"Midnight Ruin" by Katee Robert was my first foray into Greek mythology retellings, and wow, what an introduction! The author masterfully holds true to the spirit, personality, family dynamics, and character traits of well-known Greek figures and gods, while seamlessly placing them in a modern context. The scenes are incredibly spicy, causing me to blush constantly—a hallmark of Robert's evocative writing style.
This why-choose novel follows Eurydice on her journey to become a powerful woman who calls her own shots and readily expresses herself with confidence. She is recovering from an awful betrayal by her long-time lover, Orpheus, a wealthy and self-serving painter. Charon, Eurydice’s best friend and her brother-in-law's right-hand man, is determined to help heal her heart. Orpheus seeks penance from Eurydice, but the trio unexpectedly falls madly in love and lust with one another.
While exploring the fluidity that love can provide, they also face a brewing war in Olympus, which threatens to divide the upper and lower parts of the city. The character development is outstanding, with each figure evolving beautifully throughout the novel. However, the plotline of the war takes a backseat until the last 15% of the book. This pacing issue stands out, as I would have loved for the war's plot to be more seamlessly woven through the entire story.
Overall, "Midnight Ruin" is a captivating and sensual read that expertly combines mythology with modern elements, offering a fresh and engaging take on these timeless tales. If you're a fan of spicy romance and strong character arcs, this novel is definitely worth picking up.
My first Eurydice and Orpheus retelling and I enjoyed it. Having Charon in it was a good addition and it was fun to get some Hades content again.
Heavy on spice and weaker on plot, but that is almost what you have to expect with the series. However I liked that the stakes are still high and violence is definitely increasing in Olympus. If you’re here for a heavily inspired Greek myth retelling, you might be a little disappointed, but if you’re here for spice and a fun read - you will have a great time with Midnight ruin and the whole series.
Book 6 in the series and probably my second favourite couple, Nice amount of chilli, but the series is defiantly losing is shine for me.
In reality, this is more like 3.5 stars than four. Here we get Eurydice, Orpheus, & Charon’s story. In a lot of ways, Eurydice has come into her own but is still treated like a fragile flower (which, honestly, the whole “don’t have a heart to love with because of Orpheus” does give off helpless vibes. Charon really wants her, but again, Orpheus. Orpheus wants forgiveness- so degradation kink, here we come! There are some good moments, lots of spice, and the throuple does win me over a bit in the long run. I keep reading this series because, one, I’m so invested now in the political outcome of Olympus and that deeper mystery. And two, there are really good stories in here. Unfortunately, the last really good story that I loved was Cassandra and Apollo’s story. It had moments of connection, sweetness, and warmth mixed in with the politics and spice. Lately, it feels like all we’re getting is the spice. Which, fine, but I just want to feel like the people actually connected on more than that level.
**Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy.**
Katee Robert never fails to serve with Midnight Ruin and I'm obsessed. Dark Olympus is one of my favoriteeeee series.
This is Charon, Eurydice, & Orpheus' story, which has been hinted at in previous books. I liked that Charon & Eurydice admitted their feelings fairly early, but kind of wish they'd had more time before Orpheus horned in, lol. I already knew I'd have a hard time warming up to him, as 2nd chance isn't my favorite trope. Tbf, he definitely groveled, though it didn't feel like it was for very long. It felt a bit rushed overall; I'd have liked to see all 3 of them develop as a trio more, especially with the background trauma. There's not as much outright action as with the last couple installments, until the very end. But the hints with Ariadne give clues that there's a huge showdown headed to Olympus soon.
This was another fun entry in the Dark Olympus series, but I didn't get the same emotional resonance from the Eurydice/Orpheus/Charon thruple as the one between Helen/Achilles/Hector. It just kind of seemed to happen with no real friction or intention from anyone - personally, I would have liked to have seen more of Eurydice with Charon before they just decided to let her toxic ex join them. The developments on who is attacking Olympus are the more interesting part of the story.
At this rate I only read these because I started the series. The lack of plot is becoming her thing and her sexual lines “blow my load” are just an ick. She’s famous for her wow factor with how much sex she can put into a book.
I really enjoyed this book! There is something so entertaining about old myths reimagined. My only gripe is that I wished I read the first 5 books in the series first as I feel like I was missing some information. I think once I do read them, I will come back and read this one again and rate it higher. Overall, very well written and definitely intrigued to read the rest of the series!
A spicy new addition to the Dark Olympus series. I wish we would have seen a little more development for the romance, it felt a little stilted in how fast is shifted from enemies to lovers but otherwise, a good read.
Katee Robert is a favorite author and an instant read for me! Can't wait for Minotaur and Ariadne's story next!
Heavy on erotica and light on plot until the last quarter of the book. As usual, Robert is at her best when writing anything sensual and this quality hasn't been lost throughout her series. Eurydice was the most compelling character of the throuple and it was interesting to see Robert use a humiliation kink for Orpheus when his most notable trait in mythology was his hubris in looking back for his beloved despite being warned not to. Not sure how I felt about Charon. I would've liked to see more characterisation for both Orpheus and Charon and would've liked to see more links to the overarching series plot earlier in the story rather than later.
