Paige thinks it's going to be the best summer of her life. She gets to hang out with Audrey, her best friend, and maybe this year, things with Audrey's brother, Dylan, will stop seeing her as his little sister's best friend. As she and Dylan get closer, she doesn't really notice Audrey pulling away. And then she goes missing. A year later, Dylan and Paige team up to discover what really happened, and
I enjoyed this book. I liked the pacing and the plot. I thought that there were enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and engaging. It was just a good, fun read!
Paige Redmond has always enjoyed spending her summers in Clearwater Ridge with her best friend Audrey Covington’s family. However, last summer was different. Audrey was not herself and spent most of the summer alone. Then, one night Audrey didn’t come home. This summer, Paige and Audrey’s older brother Dylan are determined to find out what happened to Audrey once and for all.
While the blurb of this book sounded interesting, it fell a little flat for me. Most of the twists were pretty predictable. Also, the ending and resolution of who killed Audrey were rushed and seemed completely out of left field. Probably the most disappointing of all was the lack of character development. Paige's quirks seemed a little forced at times. I didn’t find myself loving any of the characters or their relationships with each other. Overall, I’m giving it 3/5 stars. It was a decent read, but a little too predictable for my taste.
The Summer She Went Missing is a haunting mystery that keeps readers guessing until the final pages. Chelsea Ichaso's young adult novel tackles the disturbing subject of disappeared girls in the seemingly idyllic small town of Clearwater Ridge.
Protagonist Paige Redmond returns to Clearwater Ridge a year after her best friend, Audrey Covington, mysteriously vanished. Hoping to move on from the tragedy, Paige instead finds herself drawn back into the case when she discovers secrets in Audrey's room that suggest her friend had been hiding a dark double life.
Teaming up with Audrey's older brother Dylan, with whom Paige has a budding summer romance, Paige sets out to find answers about what really happened to the missing girls. Her investigation leads her into the seedy underbelly of this vacation community, revealing that no place is truly safe and people are not always what they seem.
Ichaso maintains a brisk pace while still allowing time for quieter moments of grief, confusion and dawning dread. The plot twists keep coming as Paige unravels lie after lie in search of the truth. Vivid descriptions of the natural beauty of the waterfalls juxtapose sharply against the evil lurking beneath the surface.
Ichaso offers an emotional gut punch. Paige is a compelling heroine who finds reserves of courage and conviction she didn't know she had. And the missing girls, though we only know them in flashbacks, feel achingly real in their hopes for the future before their lives were cut short by unspeakable violence.
This was great! This was YA mystery at its finest and super enjoyable for someone in her late 30s...nowhere near the YA age demographic.
I enjoyed the plot, the story, the characters and the way the suspense was built up.
Totally recommend when you're in the mood for YA!
Wow! For a YA thriller book, I was pleasantly surprised. I was hooked from the very beginning (which can be fairly unusual for me) & kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story! I think this is a perfect thriller for younger audiences just diving into the genre.
Thank you NetGalley, SourceBooks Fire & Chelsea Ichaso for the opportunity to read this ARC.
4 solid stars. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. No comments other than I didn't want to put it down!
I was given an Advanced Reader Copy by NetGalley for an honest review.
Another win for YA mystery. This book had me hooked from beginning to end. I loved the idea of Paige not being there all year and almost an outsider trying to unravel the mystery. I loved the dynamic between Paige and Dylan as well. Every revelation had me second guessing what I thought was going on.
Thank you netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for allowing me to read this book. I enjoyed reading this book. This was so damn good. I loved the plot twist.
What a fantastic YA thriller from Chelsea Ichaso, it kept me enthralled after a somewhat slow start.
The plot surrounds missing teenage girls and we follow Paige searching for her summer best friend Audrey with her summer BF and Audrey’s brother Dylan. Heavy on the mystery, light on the romance likeable believable protagonists..
A well told story and without doubt a recommended 4.5 read.
Thanks to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this! This was such a good mystery/thriller. The characters were very unique. I’m glad that the plot had a little bit of romance and it wasn’t the whole story line. I couldn’t put this book down and now I can’t wait for the next book by Ichaso!
The Summer She Went Missing by @chelseaichaso was the first 5 star read I have read in such a long time. I loved this story and this twist was so so good. I love a good YA book and this was a treat, highly recommend. This one will be released on March 5, 2024. I would suggest going into this one blind because it will make it all so much better! I will be reading everything else this author writes now!
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of this work in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this book.
Loved this thrilling story involving a hard to solve mystery. It was full of suspence and many twists and turns that had me changing conclusions many times.
Paige is a fantastic character and I just fell in love with her.
Devoured this book in less than a day.
Highly recommend.
For some odd reason there seemes to be a slew of books that have Girls being abducted and forced into dark areas. This is the third one I have read this month. Two were ARC's, one just released this month. Why? anyhow this one was good. The drama was not intense especially for someone missing but I still enjoed the bookit was an easy read.
This is a fun fusion of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and The Summer I Turned Pretty and I enjoyed it a lot! The writing was very digestible and the plot was easy to follow. I thought the inclusion of different points of view was very well executed.
While I feel like at times the story was a bit predictable, there were still some twists that threw me for a loop. Overall very enjoyable and fun and with enough twists to keep you guessing!
Paige and Audrey have been best friends practically their whole lives. They spend their summers together, but last year, Audrey was behaving oddly and disappeared at the end of the summer. Now, Audrey's older brother, Dylan, and Paige team up to get to the bottom of what happened to Audrey. But she wasn't the first girl to go missing.
This was a solid mystery. There are sections where the perspective is of "the girl"--I'm still not exactly sure who this was meant to be.
There were definitely some cringey dialogue moments and cliches, but it wasn't too drastic and took anything away from the plot. The most interesting aspect of the story is Madison Blake, a con artist who seems to be at the center of both her own disappearance and Audrey's. Since we haven't seen Audrey and Paige's friendship grow, it's not as engaging as Madison is. The ending is a little questionable, but not bad or completely out of left field.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review!:)
I went in blind to this one, I am soo glad that I did! The author did an amazing job of mixing the characters and the dynamic plot! Paige and Dylan had a steamy summer romance which abruptly ended when Dylan's sister, Audrey, went missing. Then the summer ended and the next year Paige and her family went back to Dylan's family Summer home again. This time slowly Dylan and Paige decide to team up since it's been a year since Audrey's disappearance and there were no leads they are going to find out what happened to Audrey. However, as they start finding leads everything begins to get intense and they are constantly watching their backs because they are finding things out about people they thought were their friends.
This novel is a page-turner and once I reached the middle of the book I could not put it down because everything was not what it seemed everyone has their agenda and some people will do anything to make sure their secrets stay secret! A good thriller if you are looking for a fast-paced thriller with INSANE twist and secrets that are SHOCKING!
Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the extraordinary opportunity to read and review this book! It was a treat!
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
"The Summer She Went Missing" set up a promising mystery in the idyllic summer vacation town of Clearwater Ridge, but it struggled to maintain the intrigue. Paige Redmond's summer took a turn when her wealthy best friend, Audrey Covington, disappeared one night without a trace, and the plot hinges on Paige uncovering deep-seated secrets and unraveling the mystery of that fateful night.
While the setup sounded interesting, much of this book fell flat for me in its execution. The twists, rather than being shocking, came off as predictable, and the resolution of the whodunnit felt disconnected from the build-up, almost more like an afterthought. Paige's character, while likable enough, didn't quite hit the mark. Her quirky use of "old people talk," attributed to her job working at a nursing home, felt really forced and didn't contribute meaningfully to her character. Most of the characters in the story felt somewhat underdeveloped and they lacked the depth and dimension needed to fully engage me.
The relationship between Paige and Dylan was fine, but the dramatic bits of romantic tension and "trouble in paradise" moments between Paige and Dylan felt tedious, didn't add much to the storyline, and often felt like a distraction from the main plot.
All in all, I'm giving "The Summer She Went Missing" 3 out of 5 stars. While the premise was intriguing, the book struggled with character depth and a compelling resolution, making it a decent but not particularly memorable read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of The Summer She Went Missing by Chelsea Ichaso.
I really did like this book. I enjoyed it overall, though I will say, it stretched a little too long at the start. I felt as though it took a bit for the story to really get going. I felt like that was a little odd for YA, primarily a YA thriller since YA is often a little more fast-paced.
The story itself was good, and the twist did get me at the end, though it was unbelievable, but I'm always willing to suspend my beliefs when reading lol. I also understand that I'm not going to like every character, and I often DO enjoy unlikeable characters, but I hated Paige's old time-y references. I think it was a random little quirk to give to a character when we don't actually know that side of her. We never actually get to learn about her much working at the old folks home, so it felt like a silly quirk for the sake of having a silly quirk, and I sometimes dislike when characters have random personality traits like that one just thrown in there.
Once you get passed the slow start, it picks up and is a good read.
