OMG! Thank you Talia Tucker for such an amazing book! It was perfect! I don’t even know what to say I’m speechless. I felt like I was in the back seat of Bobby’s car as they were on their roadtrip to visit colleges and breaking all the rules as they went. They were the perfect duo. They were funny and had all the teenage angst. I loved that as each day passed they both really got to see each other for who they were and the persona they played in front of each other dropped. Even though they were frenemies being together on that roadtrip is exactly what they needed to gain clarity on their next chapter in life!

Don’t walk, run to get this book!!

Thank you @coloredpagesbt @penguinteen @taliatuck for the #Gifted book!

This book was a funny and sweet read. I love the rivals to lovers trope and Talia Tucker did such a good job with it in this book. Bobby and Winter were both more complicated characters than I was expecting. This time period in life, that decision point of what to do after high school, can be difficult even for over achievers who think they know exactly what they want in life. I really enjoyed how this book explored this. It's an excellent debut novel and I look forward to reading more books from this author.

It's a cute little rom-com! I noticed rom-coms tend to be hit or miss for me, especially for YA titles since I seem to be gearing more towards New Adult or Adult rom-com titles. I still found this to be fun, but I will admit some of the banter and angst felt cringe to me, but that's mostly because I've been in that phase before and as an adult see things differently now.

okay, WOW 😍 i want to start off by saying that this was the cutest and funnest read between academic rivals! it definitely felt like a read that could easily be turned into an amazing movie.

this story was a fun journey through the eyes of the only two Koreans in their school, seeking out good college candidates as rivals, obviously 🤪 who end up on a road trip together to visit and tour schools…what could go wrong? Or right? 🫶🏻

i loved the dynamics of our main characters, winter and bobby. i think i resonate with bobby a lot actually because i found him to be quite relatable with his quirks, timeliness, and many notebooks 😆 winter on the other hand was also relatable for me in the way that she is full of sarcasm and is a chunky sweater-wearer 👚

the side characters in this story really helped support the storyline in my opinion. we see each of their best friends, emmy and kai, and they each had a fun and emotional impact to the story. my favorite was probably winters grandma, Halmeoni. i LOVED that woman with her bingo and petunias!! 😂✨

id definitely recommend this to anyone who loves enemies-to-lovers vibes, YA contemporary romance, strong family ties (+ reference to Korean culture), and banter. Ohhh the BANTER! 😍

this debut novel is a perfect read, filled with fun, chaos, raw emotions, realistic characters and family dynamics, rule-breaking and imperfect people. a book where you might think they're annoying but honestly, they're just real characters like us who make mistakes and take time accepting them. i will protect these two for life!

"She’d always liked space because it made everything seem small, but it seemed that she had shrunk her world so much that she left no room for anything or anyone else."

our tea drinking, space loving girl. her best friend is her rebel grandma who is such a joy! winter is an absolute mood, especially with her ease of being alone. she has no qualms about being by herself, and yet yearns to be able to let loose. she's stuck in this rivalry against bobby (the only other asian kid in the area) and hates having to bow down to him. so obviously she does everything to be first, and wins :) but again she aint perfect, she's only human. she finds herself making everyone stay at an arms length, and doesnt know how to fix this.

"Never in a million years did he think he’d get advice that could potentially alter the trajectory of his life from someone who was using her sleeve as a napkin. And never in a trillion years did he think that person would be Winter Park."

this is the sweetest boy to ever exist on earth. i mean this boy is literally the boy version of me! anything goes wrong, we cry. anything bad happens, we cry. we need everyone to like us? check :( we definitely need therapy. and oh he just got freshly dumped! so he decides lets throw caution to the wind and do the college trip.

this boy was so in love with our winter, he literally does everything she asks. but he was just in denial to actually acknowledge it as love.

“What would you know about my relationship or any relationship for that matter? You’ve never dated anyone. You barely even have any friends.”
“At least I’m not desperate for everyone to love me.”

god put these two in the same room and knew they'd be the most chaotic existence ever and so made sure they interacted very less. but lets just say, they decided to take fate into their own hands and went on that trip. and that trip was just the thing the two of them needed! it became their adventure to finally break some rules and the rules they break were so hilarious 🤣

moreover, this trip helped the two understand what they were lacking in and maybe how to become better. the character arcs of these two are insane but realistic. i mean come on, a couple that heals together, stays together!

☾⋆⁺₊🎧🌅✨𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ the writing

author, i need more! these two chaotic cuties were just so fun and lovely, i did not realize the pages flipping by. i did not even realize i was done with the book, until i flipped the page and was met with a blank page and i wanted to cry T-T like nooooo, i need more of this old married couple.

all in all this book is simply amazing, with such vivid writing that immediately transports you into that car along with these two about to take the most life-changing road trip of their life ;)

I really enjoyed this enemies to friends to lovers YA story. It was rather amusing to read about how Winter and Bobby were so much alike but try everything to one up each other. I really enjoyed reading about their college preview trip where both finally learn to let loose a little and break some rules. This was a cute read.

Rules for Rule Breaking is an academic rival to lovers, a road trip romance following two Asian American high school friends who are family friends. And their family sends them together to visit colleges during their summer break. 100 miles is a long time to be in close proximity of someone who you want to strangle on the best of days.

This book sounds so good in the blurb sadly it didn’t work for me. The biggest reason will be the female MC, Winter, I kept waiting for a few of the apologies that never came. Also her making fun of Bobby for crying didn’t sit well with me. in the beginning, I was sure things would change but I didn’t appreciate it in the second half. Okay, some people are more emotional than others and if they are not causing you any trouble for that then stop with your judgements.

That being said I am still giving it three stars because I did love some of the things. I understood some of the struggles the MCs went through, even Winter. She isn’t a bad character just someone who needs to learn a few things. Bobby was well written but I hated the last few chapters where he kept making efforts even though he had done nothing wrong.

I loved Winter’s grandmother and Kai (Bobby’s best friend) stole the show whenever he appeared in the book.

I had so much fun with this & with some of the tropes here. The banter? The characters? 10/10! I'm always a bit nervous reading YA but this was really enjoyable! I look forward to reading more works by Talia. Thanks for allowing me a chance to read this in exchange for a review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC.

I thought that Bobby and Winter were very relatable characters, but I found myself relating to Bobby more in certain aspects. Bobby and Winter are both Korean, but Bobby isn't as in touch with that part of himself and isn't able to speak Korean like Winter which causes him to feel ashamed. I also thought that Bobby and Winter had good chemistry with each other. I liked the rivals to lovers dynamic that they had.

I feel like my biggest issue was that there were a lot of different themes that were touched on throughout the book, but they were never really looked at in any depth. The themes of culture and identity were two big ones that are brought up throughout the book. This was such a big part of Bobby's character throughout the book so it felt like a missed opportunity to not look at it on a deeper level. Overall, this was a decent debut.

What a cute romance between two Korean-American high schoolers as they are forced to go on a road trip together to visit potential college and discover more about themselves and what they want to do in the future. I absolutely loved the banter between Winter and Bobby; the backhanded comments Winter makes are so funny and out of pocket. The concept was also interesting to have these two know each other for most of their lives, but this is the first time they are together for a long period of time. I also appreciated the Korean cultural references made throughout as it helps to further bring the characters to life. It was also nice that both of their families are still different from one another even though they came from Korea. My only major qualm is that I felt that the ending was a bit abrupt, and I would have appreciated an epilogue that showed what Winter and Bobby decided to do once they graduated high school.

This was a really funny and cute story about identity and finding your place in the world. Great read for YA, and anyone who needs a reminder that people are people.

#NetGalleyARC This was a super cute, enemies to non-enemies (lovers? It sounds weird to say lovers when the book is about high school students) story. The two main characters are super realistic and relatable, they could be any of the students in my HS library at any given time. This YA rom-com was funny, witty, sweet, and overall a great read. Would make for a perfect tv/movie adaption!

Winter Park and Bobby Bae have been rivals as long as they have known each other. The only two Korean Americans in their North Carolina town, their parents are very close and have constantly forced the two to suffer each other's presence over the years, creating the perfect competitive storm. Now stuck together on a college road trip they both found reasons to accept, Winter and Bobby are going to break all the rules they've set for themselves and each other and discover that the reasons they've been enemies for so long might actually be the reasons that they belong together.

I loved this debut! I was laughing out loud within the first four pages, and this book kept me in stitches throughout! I think the writing was strong for a debut, and the pacing was excellent. I literally read this book in two days because it was so wonderfully binge-able. Winter and Bobby were characters I loved reading about right away, and my love for them only grew as the story progressed (dual POV! incredible!). Their flaws and struggles were so real and so well-developed, I felt like I was experiencing all of their emotions right there with them. Winter is my space-loving, cozy sweater, tea drinking genius that I would have wanted to be best friends with in high school, and I saw so much of myself in Bobby, my fellow type-A, anxious, risk-averse over-achiever.

Kai and Emmy also made such stand-out side characters, and I genuinely loved reading the differences in the friendships between Winter/Emmy and Bobby/Kai. The way the quad came together in the end was so satisfying! I also really love when YA novels tackle tougher themes. This story touches on (among other things) grief, estranged family, racism, perfectionism, friendship & relationship conflict, questioning your life path, and feeling disconnected from your culture. I really enjoyed how Tucker balanced hilarious dry humor moments with these more serious themes.

The only critique I have is that while the pacing was consistently good throughout, it did feel a bit choppy at times for lack of a more eloquent description. This didn't really distract me from how much I was enjoying the story though, so I can't knock it too much.
Overall, I think this was a really strong debut for Tucker, and I am so excited to read more from her in the future!

I would recommend this to anyone who loves a laugh-out-loud YA romance/coming-of-age story, academic rivals to equal partners arc, and stories with themes that emphasize the complexity and importance of cultural heritage.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Young Readers Group - Kokila for my e-ARC of this title, received in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super cute hate to love forced proximity romance! I loved it so much! I was smiling and giggling almost the entire time I was reading it. It gave me all the feels. I thought that the main characters were very loveable and I was rooting for them. I loved how they interacted with each other with there banter. It was cute and funny. I also really liked the side characters.
Overall a really cute and fun YA romance. It was also a quick and easy read. I can't wait to see what Talia Tucker writes next!

This is a book about stepping outside of your comfort zone, seeking connections, and having the courage to try. The humor is a strong point throughout the story, with quippy dialogue that made me chuckle aloud. Watching Winter and Bobby fall towards one another was so sweet; the lengths they go to uplift and protect one another, even when they don't realize it at first, were utterly charming in the way that first crushes are. While reading, it sometimes felt like the narration didn't match the age/genre, however I did read an arc, so it's possible that changes were made! Once I accepted that this was the style, the book picked up speed and I was able to read without distraction.
