As a midwestern millennial, these poems spoke to my heart. I laughed, I got contemplative, I was shaken to my core. The cover drew me in and the poems made me stay. I will be performing these to my friends and loved ones for a long time, whether they like it or not!
Thank you netgalley for the ARC. This was a cute and funny collection of poetry. The artwork was sweet.
I liked this book enough. Some of the poems were very relatable and enjoyable, but I wasn't a massive fan of quite a few of them. The writing style wasn't my favourite, but I liked it well enough to keep going. It was okay, middle tier.
Thanks to Netgalley for this advanced copy!
At one point in my life I was a performing poet, one full of curse words, inappropriate subject matter, and grand delusions of making a whole lot of money writing poems.
I absolutely loved this book. It's weird, quirky, random, insanely funny (and possibly a legally binding document that could be used as evidence to commit the poet to a psych ward for a 72 hour hold).
You will laugh. You may cringe. You might even feel like you're reading something written by your long lost brother. If you're like me, you'll be mad you didn't write this book.
I see this being in many Christmas stockings this year.
Andrew Shaffer turns poetry on its head with Not Today Satan (Maybe Tomorrow), producing a funny, entertaining collection of poems that go down easy and stick with you long after you've finished reading the book.
I loved how many poems don't end the way you expect them to end. I smiled, chuckled, snorted, laughed, and guffawed my way through this book. If I'd been drinking at the time, I would have had a spit-take. (And I did all of this without the use of a thesaurus.)
I particularly enjoyed the back and forth of the rejection letter, and as a writer myself laughed enthusiastically at "Liar' with its reference to writer Philip Roth, and 'Writing Advice'. "How to be the best 'you' you can be also got me laughing, but then again most of the rest did as well.
The cover is lovely, especially in contrast to the title, which is what drew me to the book in the first place.
Even if you aren't what you'd call a poetry fan, if you like irreverent humour, you'll enjoy this.
I'm so happy I got an ARC of #NotTodaySatanMaybeTomorrow from #NetGalley !
From the gorgeous and sassy cover to the very final page - I loved this book!
This is exactly my sense of humor and provided a mood booster exactly when I was in need of it. Stand outs in this collection are: In the Twilight (#teamjacob ) and After the Breakup (which made me literally LOL!) I really want to check out the rest of Shaffer’s poetry now. Thanks so much to IBPA and NetGalley for my e-copy in exchange for honest review!
Books don't usually make me laugh out loud (normally, but lately I've been picking some good ones, this one included) but this one got me multiple times! I know I'm not the only one who has noticed how ridiculous free verse poetry has become.
My favourite would have to be the Merchant of Venice Beach. Absolute hilarity from start to finish. A clever twist on the shakespeare with plenty of jokes and the perfect Shakespearean feel. Not all the jokes landed, but for me, there were more hits than misses.
This was so playful and yet has more literary devices and technique than some dead serious books of free verse poetry. What a fun and cheeky ride!

This book was just what I needed to cheer myself up at the end of a crazy hectic week! Not Today Satan is an epic collection of funny poems that I guarantee will have you laughing so hard you’ll be crying! I will absolutely be using some quotes from this in my everyday life from here on out! I can not recommend this book enough! 5 stars! Two thumbs up! A+! Go get a copy I swear you won’t regret it!!
I received an advanced readers copy of this book from NetGalley for free. My review is unbiased, honest, and completely my own.
Laughed out loud, poetry collection
I truly enjoyed reading this from start to finish—read it in one go. Not today, Satan is a poetry collection, which is funny and at the same time spot on with lots of different and great poetries. I’m sure even the ones who say they don’t like poetry will enjoy this as well. So good I want to read more from Andrew Shaffer!
Happy reading!♥️

This is a collection of poetry that will not be for everyone, largely because humor is so personal and it's hard to hit all the right boxes for ever reader, every time. That being said, I thought most of the poems were fantastic for their originality, in both idea, execution, and formatting, and the repeated motif of censorship was cleverly done. The illustrations helped with the general theme and ambience of the collection, and they were just nice to look at. Even the poems I didn't care for content-wise were still well constructed. I laughed or snorted often enough to have definitely enjoyed myself in the process.
Honestly, I didn’t expect to actually laugh at any of these poems. I’ve never read ‘funny’ poems before, but I genuinely laughed at most of them.
They’re not ‘inspiring’ like Rupi Kaur and they’re not rhyming like Dr. Seuss, but they’re really funny and a few were actually sweet. Also, I loved the pictures, they’re reminiscent of Rupi Kaur, with the same one-line style, but they’re all wonky and some of them barely correlate to the poems which are as funny as the poems themselves.
As someone who does really enjoy poetry, including Rupi Kaur and others similar to her writing style, or even more essay/story style poetry, I also really enjoyed this because it’s a nice change from other poems. Plus they’re quick and just fun to read in a short period. I’d definitely recommend this to friends and will buy the book once it’s out so I can reread and flip through it when I need a laugh or to show my friends.
A new author for me. Have to say I didn't expect to like it this much! After completing Not Today Satan(In one day I mught add), I went straight to Goodreads to check out more by the author since our humor style is so similar! Thank you, NetGalley for providing me with this ARC and introducing me to a new author!
Some of the poems are literally laugh out loud…other’s not so much…or maybe I just don’t “get it”.
The line drawings are a fun & subtle touch of comedy.
Overall…I think this book is a fun quick read for anyone who wants a chuckle.
3 Stars!
Okay this was a super fun read and I think your enjoyment will be based on your sense of humour hence why I've rated this 3 stars. Some of the poems I genuinely couldn't help but laugh at:
- It's true that Bella should of picked Jacob (I still stand by this hahahaha)
- Yes, I too want a pet dinosaur!
- Flo Rida... Florida? WHO KNEW!
- Due to a certain poem I am now listening to the Backstreet Boys "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely" and I'm having a great time!
- I also really enjoyed the little drawing as well!
Overall a fun poetry book, it's not the deep poetry that a lot of people see and it will definitely make you laugh at some point (so I'd like to think), I'd love to see more of Andrew Shaffers work. Thanks to Netgalley for providing an eac in exchange for an honest review it's much appreciated.
An absolutely fun and hilarious poetry collection! The Twilight poem has to be one of my favourites that I’ve read this year! Very down to earth and relatable poems that will bring a sense of nostalgia to your life.
Fun! 3.5/5

I'm a sucker for a great cover and a catchy title, I swear and this one really grabbed my attention rather quickly. Not Today, Satan (Maybe tomorrow) is the sophomore poetry collection from humorist, Andrew Shaffer. It is laugh out loud funny and the sort of realistic comedy that works and with cute little pictures throughout to match.
My favorite poem in the book is called:
after the break-up
“There are plenty of fish in the sea,” you said, hoping to cheer me up.
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind if I ever decide to start fucking fish.
The book releases September 5, 2023.
This book was alright. I think my main problem is that this just wasn't my sense of humor. I did find some of the poems funny but I just felt like a lot of it was super forced.
This was fun, lighthearted, and quirky. A quick read for someone who enjoys a sense of humor with some light poetry on the side.
Andrew Shaffer woke up one morning and decided to become the world's greatest living poet. This book is the current culmination of those efforts to achieve that title. Published by 8th Layer Media, this collection of humorous poems covers everything from the dark temptation of Little Debbies, through opinions on whether Edward or Jacob was better for Bella, to whether or not The Paris Review should be able to print the word "fuck" uncensored.
It's a rollicking ride, at times deeply insightful, but always hilarious. There are humorous doodles throughout, and an biting tone that is as deeply intelligent as it is acerbic at times. This is a fun collection. While Shaffer hasn't yet won the acclaim that he seeks, he's certainly not giving up getting it anytime soon.
Really loved these much more expected! I laughed and laughed and thought about some of the points pointed out too! Adore the cover and title of book it's sooo good! I normally am not a poetry fan either but this was fun and funny!
