Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for providing me with an E-arc in exchange for my honest thoughts <3
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is a sweet, mostly low stakes, historical romance. For some reason I had convinced myself that this was a f/f book; alas, it was not. I did generally find the characters likable though they did seem to suffer from a lack of development. Of course, this was a fairly short book coming in at under 300 pages so that along with the quick, almost rushed, plot makes sense. I was intrigued by the synopsis, a second son creates a list of well off women for other second sons to peruse until they can find a wife, only the women on the list find out and seek revenge. Once the plot pick up on that which the title implies (the ladies rewriting the rules, obviously), I did like the sequence of events. I was a bit turned off by the perspective as it would quite randomly focus of characters that while a part of the plot were not central to the love story.
Overall, The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is a short and sweet historical romance that I would recommend for anyone looking to start out in the genre.
I have really enjoyed Suzanne's other books and am continually impressed with how witty, unique, and fun her stories are. This book did not disappoint and is probably my new favorite novel by this author. The whole premise of this book is entertaining. The battle between the ladies and gentlemen in terms of courtship during a time where the men really held most of the power was such a fun way to flip things on their head and made for an entertaining Regency novel. I absolutely had a blast reading this story!
I loved the different perspectives throughout the book and not only did I laugh, the romance was SO good! I loved how Diana stepped out of her box and grew as a character. I also loved Max and how sweet he truly was.
This is a book I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend. It's a sweet Regency romance that will have you smiling the whole story through and cheering for each of the couples.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you so much for an advanced copy of The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain!
I really enjoyed Suzanna Allain's previous books, so I was excited to give this one a try. I would encourage anyone to read this book that enjoys historical romance, palm kisses, a spunky female lead, and a cinnamon roll male lead. This is a charming story full of Allain's previously-on-display-wit and humor in her writing. She created endearing characters and a nice plot line that had me rooting for not only the main characters but also the side characters too!
I prefer my books a little spicy 😉 but this is a clean romance that will leave you wanting more, I promise! And, I knew when I started the book it was likely a "clean" book because I have read her previous works, so that tempered my expectations.
Overall, I think this was a fun little romance!
Rating: 4⭐️
Diana finds herself pursued by men - and cannot help but question why. She is not a great beauty, lives a considerable drive out of London so why are these bachelors interested? A list of women with fortunes has been published - changing many lives in the process.
Oh I loved this one! Short and to the point. Women living on their own and refusing to accept less than they deserver. Banter and romance.
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is a lovely historical fiction romance with a updated twist. I found the story to full of humor as well as touching moments. When Diana finds her name on a list of women who are spinster heiresses or wealthy widow, she decides to take back control of the situation. Not only confronting the author Maxwell, but also by reaching out to other women on the list, she is able to turn the tables on the men who are pursuing them for their money,. What follows is a sweet story. Diana not only develops some amazing friendships, but helps the women and herself take charge in their lives. The story is complex and I enjoyed the secondary story lines that were going on. I recommend The Ladies Rewrite the Rules for fans of this genre.
Thank you Berkley for the advanced reader copy. This is my honest review.
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is the first book that I have read by this author. The book was short and sweet. It was funny and sweet and very low on drama. I don’t know that I would recommend it necessarily but I’m not mad that I read it .
This was just delightful! Sweet, humorous, lighthearted, and low stakes, it was the perfect quick Regency read. I loved how the ladies took charge and flipped the tables on the men! The friendships Diana made were the best part of the story. The romances were also so sweet. I loved how both Max and Jerome realized their past missteps and took real action to remedy them.
Overall, just a fun little book that kept a smile on my face throughout.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced look at the book to review. All opinions are my own.
Read this if you:
•like historical romances
•enjoy challenging the status quo
•hate double standards
•have ever been judged for something stupid
This book was a breath of fresh air. I don’t read a ton of regency romances but this was a delight and the audio was fantastic too. Thank you Berkley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain was such a fantastically entertaining read and I cannot wait to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romances. The writing reminded me so much of Georgette Heyer and it was just such a joyful book to read. The story was unique and funny (I actually laughed out loud a couple of times). I cannot wait for everyone else to enjoy this beautifully written story.
This story was such a joy to read! I loved the strong women who refused to be shoved into a box thanks to their elevated circumstance in life. I loved Diana and Max. This book is perfect for historical romance lovers looking for something fresh and vibrant to read!
Absolutely fun and delightful in every way!!
Diana is appalled to discover that her name, along with dozens of other wealthy widows and single women, listed in a "directory" so that men who are need of a wealthy wife will know where to look.
When she confronts the man behind the directory, she is taken aback by her attraction to him but that does not stop her from gathering together the "ladies of the directory" to flip the rules of society on their head.
Maxwell only meant to be helpful with the directory but after meeting Diana, he realizes he has made a grave error. Not only did he embarrass the women whose names he publicized, but he knows that Diana will never forgive him and the woman he is falling for can never be his.
What to love:
Regency era
Romcom/lighthearted
Dual POV
Enemies to lovers
Witty banter
The Ladies
Friendship between Diana and Regina
The ROMANCE!
The extra romances
Charming characters
This story had such a unique plot line, and who doesn't love reading about sassy heroines who decide to take control of the narrative? The author managed to make me cheer for the women and their mission while simultaneously hoping that the men - especially Maxwell - would get their HEA with the women they loved.
Full of swoony romance and chemistry, delightful banter, and lovable characters, this book held me captive from first page to last. I don't think I stopped smiling for even a minute! A very enthusiastic 5 stars. I already cannot wait for a re-read!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
Suzanne comes back with a sweetly charming read complete with a fun cast of sassy heroines sidelined for various reasons. But the fortune hunters are calling and it’s time to take matters into their own hands and rewrite some of society’s rules.
As expected, I loved Suzanne’s prose and the twist to a timeless romantic tale.
Full review to come.
Thanks to Austenprose, Berkley, and Netgalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
This book was very much like a Georgette Heyer novel, if Georgette Heyer had been a contemporary feminist. The dialogue was clever and the ensemble cast was presented very well. It's tricky to manage multiple romances in one book, but this one succeeded. I was just as (if not more) interested in the secondary and tertiary romances.
My only real complaint is that the directory continued to be the sole point of conflict between Diana and Mr. Dean, its author, long past its "sell by" date. The emotional fallout (issues with mistrust, doubt, etc.), which could have made the directory's repeated presence more credible, wasn't explored to its full extent. I think this was unfortunate because the subplot that DID take its place was completely unnecessary.
Overall, though, it was a short and charming Regency romance.
A group of women find themselves quite aghast when informed of a new publishing that makes them susceptible to all manner of fortune hunters. To retaliate, they band together to “rewrite the rules of society” and give the ladies “the opportunity to taste some of the freedoms that a gentleman took for granted.”
This was my first Suzanne Allain, and I enjoyed it immensely. The prose is delightful, the dialogue witty, the characters charming. The narration style is engaging, with occasional asides from the narrator’s or principle character’s pov, which makes it so fun to read. This book is entertaining and charming, exactly what any lover of regency romance is looking for.
Watch for my full review to come in January 2024.
Thanks to AustenProse, NetGalley, and Berkley for the advanced copy. These thoughts belong to me.
Do you like romantic comedies?
I love romantic comedies, especially historical romantic comedies. Georgette Heyer is one of my favorite authors who captures the Regency era in wonderful romantic comedies. Lovers of Heyer will enjoy The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain.
This story has great characters and a wonderful plot with a few different romances including an enemies-to-lover story and second chance romance. Both tropes are my favorites. I not only loved the main characters in this story, but I also loved the secondary characters.
I also loved how the ladies rewrote the rules in this book. Besides having a great story of female friendship, it shows a group of women who turn negative experiences into positive ones. They don’t follow the rules of society, but they find what works best for them in life.
If you get a chance to read this book – I highly recommend it!
My full review of The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain will be posted on January 18, 2024.
Book Source: Review copy from NetGalley as a part of the Austenprose PR Book Tour. Thank-you! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I love a regency novel and I especially love one that makes me smile with a fun voice and great characters. My full review is coming, but this one fits the bill!
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain is a sweet Regency romance. Diane Boyle is incensed that her name has appeared in a book of wealthy marriageable women. She is so mad she goes into town to confront Mr. Dean the writer of the book. Then a plan begins to form.
I adored this book from the beginning to the end. Diane is a beautiful soul who finds her voice and keeps her kindness in this story. Mr. Dean is a truly great hero who has a genuine heart and is so loveable. The supporting characters were funny, interesting, and added charm to the story while receiving the happily ever after they have longed for. The story was so lovely and the beautiful detailed Regency setting made my day. I enjoyed the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and not judging someone before you know their past.
This delightful story had me laughing out loud, sighing, and enjoy the Regency time period. The author’s attention to detail, the depth of the characters, and beautiful writing made The Ladies Rewrite the Rules a wonderful read. I highly recommend.
I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a review.
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules is such a fun and charming historical romance. I loved the vibrant characters, witty dialogue, and swoon-worthy love stories.
Diana is such a compassionate and kind protagonist, and I loved her story. With her newfound freedom, Diana finally begins to experience life, and when she connects with the other women who are in the same directory she’s in, Diana really begins to flourish.
The Ladies of the Registry. What a fun group to be a part of. All of these women, each of whom is mentioned in Maxwell’s directory of wealthy, eligible women, are harshly judged for things that were mostly out of their control. I love this group of women and what they stand for. The Ladies of the Registry, as they’ve named themselves, are bucking societal norms and turning negative experiences into positive ones, which empowers them. It’s interesting to see where their stories lead as they forge together and take control of their situations in ways that defy what’s expected of women at the time.
The friendship between Diana and Regina is another highlight of the book. These friends develop such a wonderful bond, and the way that they wholly accept and support each other is something desperately needed in both of their lives. There are some great messages here about sisterhood, found families, starting over, and owning one’s life. I also really like how the story was resolved and that we get to see the motivations and remorse of some of the antagonists.
But my favorite part of the story is the romances. Yes, romances! There are several in the story, each unique and swoon-worthy in their own right. The main love story is an enemies-to-lovers, and there are also a couple of second-chance romances that are delightful! Diana and a well are wonderful together, and his growth throughout the story, as he realizes the ramifications of the book he penned, is remarkable. I really like how the author sheds light on so many different perspectives and motivations, some of which are innocent and others that are more unsavory, behind them. It makes you see the situations in different ways.
I thought this was a charming historical romance, and I’m thankful to Berkley and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
This story was an absolute delight! It’s humorous, lighthearted, warm and witty, with endearing characters you grow to love and care for.
I loved the twist where the ladies rewrite the rules and set their own terms for relationships with the men who are courting them. I especially loved the romance between Diana and Maxwell!
The book was a quick read, well written, fast-paced, and full of wonderful dialogue, adventure, and romance! I loved it!
