There's something appealing about a trickster. Anansi. Loki. And Monkey King. They give us the opportunity to cheer for borderline wicked behavior. We get to see them misbehave but sometimes redeem themselves and usually get their comeuppance. This book introduces the reader to not only Monkey King but a world in which all mythologies exist simultaneously. Monkey King is on a mission to get the gods to see him, a beast, as valuable and powerful. Along the way he crosses paths with all sorts of mythological beings. His mischief both helps and harms his quest. The simplicity of the story and the art makes this easy for young readers to follow and stay engaged.
This graphic novel marrying eastern and western mythologies was so fun! I'd love to see more books in this series. Maybe the Monkey King goes to Egypt?
In graphic novel Monkey King and the World of Myths, Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, yearns to be a god. After first being denied because he is a beast, he finally strikes a deal with one of the gods that will allow him to become a god himself by taking on and succeeding at a challenging quest. The Monkey King sets off to Greece, where he encounters other mythical creatures who may—or may not—be what they seem to be. This action-packed mash-up of classic Chinese and Greek mythology will have readers rooting for the Monkey King as he sets off to slay some monsters to meet his goal. Great artwork and humor will draw in readers not familiar with the mythology the story is rooted in and may turn them into mythology fans along the way.
Thank y0u to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC to read and review.
I had a blast reading this book. We see a young hero get a challenging mission, but it is one they won’t have to take on alone. They must find and destroy an ancient evil, but this proves to be harder than it sounds. Along the way they make a few friends and learn a lesson or two. Once this book comes to a close it is clear this adventure is far from over.
Nothing like a hero's journey to make my day. Loved this story, a mix of myths with other legends from other cultures. It is very fun to read, and I also love the humor in the artwork itself. Well-written and drawn, this adventurous quest takes our Monkey Beast (not a monster) on a journey. He wants to be accepted, and this is not the only lesson we learn. There are plenty of great quotes and topics that can start a conversation in the classroom related to kindness, second chances, and not judging a book by its cover. The author gives excellent alternative/ extra family-friendly endings to famous myths and stories and has us wanting for the next one. Very kawaii. Loved it.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for this Dragon Ball meets Percy Jackson kind of adventure e-arc.
This is a wonderful introduction to the concepts of mythologies and story telling for young readers, perfect for those who are too young for Percy Jackson but still looking to read something similar. The choice to use Sun Wukong-legendary Monkey King from Journey to the West-as the main character is also genius, given the episodic nature and focus on a long journey involving quests and self-discovery of his source material. Sun Wukong may not be an immediately recognizable name for Western readers, but his character archetype is, and it fits well within the story being told here. A fun adventure with cute illustrations and a lot of heart, this book is a must read for the younger audience.
Monkey King is a mischievous beast who wants to become a god and get the respect he deserves. So the gods tell him, if he becomes a monster hunter for them and succeeds at their quests, he will be granted his wish. But monsters, like monkeys, are not always what they seem! With a mix of various world mythologies, this new series is a fun adventure kids will love.
