It wasn't until I was finished with Werewolf in Alaska that I found out I've read Vicki Lewis Thompson before. It was The Nerd Who Loved Me back in 2004 and what was so enjoyable about that book was the humor mixed in with the romance. Happily, that is still true with Werewolf in Alaska and I can now say I am a fan of Thompson's.
Though it is book 5 in a series, Werewolf in Alaska can be read as a standalone with no confusion and best of all, it doesn't spoil the previous books!
Most of the time, paranormal romances contain bloody battles, endless death and destruction on a grand scale and while that can make for a fantastic read, sometimes a reader just wants a sexy romance with a paranormal creature or two. That's what Vicki Lewis Thompson's paranormal books are. They're fun, they're sexy but they're light on the paranormal aspect, giving the characters' and their relationship the spotlight for the entire book. Jake Hunter and Rachel Miller are quite the pair, a wolf against mating with humans and a human who doesn't believe there's anything wrong with a mixed mating. Jake is definitely an alpha male but he isn't a tortured, brooding, overly serious hero, he's quite funny and very charismatic. Rachel is a talented but reclusive artist who talks to herself and apparently, has a thing for a big black wolf.
Werewolf in Alaska is a delightful book that will please long time fans and attract new ones. It's a light hearted romance with a dash of comedy that keeps the pace going swiftly and puts a smile on readers' faces.
