A sweet graphic novel that looked a bit like a comic strip. I enjoyed the art overall and color scheme but didn't love the story.
My Heart in Braille delivers a touching narrative that delves into themes of camaraderie, compassion, and the significance of bridging divides to foster meaningful connections.
This graphic novel perfectly encapsulates the essence of brevity and tenderness.
The storyline is straightforward and uncomplicated, yet it exudes a genuine and sincere quality that resonates deeply.
I found the portrayal of disabilities in the book to be handled with utmost sensitivity and thoughtfulness. It felt authentic, exploratory, and provided valuable insights.
However, I did hope for a more thorough exploration of Victor's challenges alongside Marie's.
From my perspective, Victor's struggles appeared somewhat sidelined within his own narrative, which struck me as a bit peculiar. I longed for a deeper understanding of Victor's character and more comprehensive character development.
This one is built on a decent concept, disparate characters who find a connection and go out of their way to help each other. The actual reading was difficult, though. The dialogue was difficult to follow at times and the illustrations, while lovely, don't always provide context clues.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this graphic novel. This is an honest review.
What caught my attention to this book were the illustrations and the colors.
In the case of the plot, I would say that it is a quick and cute story.
The novel talks about the topics of chronic illness with blindness as a result, but also the growth of a relationship built on mutual help. But because it is a short story, it feels a little incomplete. I was left wondering how Marie-Jo would take her classes after the end, also it was a disappointment not to read more of the male protagonists, but I understand that he grows more at the end, we just don’t get to see everything.
One good thing it that the story does brings you to think more about the importance of accessibility for all disabilities.
I recommend reading it if you are looking for a quick story to pass the time.
I really liked this book because it was really cute and an easy read.
In my opinion Victor was a character one can really easy identify with which makes this book more personal and more relatable. The story that wraps up around Marie-Jo and Victor could have been a little bit less Marie-Jo centered and Victor could have gotten much more out of himself.
The artstyle of this book is fantastic and beautiful and fits the characters and the story perfectly.
This graphic novel was one of my favorite of this year!
I'm in love with the art style of Anne-Lise Nalin. Everything seems so vivid and I loved the colors used for "telling the story".
Victor and Marie-Jo are an amazing duo! He plays in a rock band and she plays cello. They have opposite character but get along well especially after they end up sitting next to eachother in class.
Marie starts helping Victor to get his grades up.Gradually they fall in love and when Marie tells Victor about her disease, he did everything to help her.
I felt close to the characters, like they were my friends. They gave me so many emotions!
"Don’t give up your dreams" is one of the meaning of this graphic novel. This story warmed my heart and brought me so much hope.
[Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this book for an honest review.]
What a gorgeous art style! I just had to finish this in one sitting! I really loved our characters, though I wish there had been a bit more communication between them and also some navigation with Marie Jo's blindness and the two main characters adapting. Overall, I loved this story, the incorporation of music, and the real struggles that the characters face and fight through.
Book 111 of 200 ~ 2023
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Wow.. so this book.. let's start with the artwork - I know this sounds silly to say, but I was impressed by how lively everything seemed.. like the crazy mess of red curls that gloriously draped the protagonist's face, the scenery, etc.
Now the story...
It was heartwrenching knowing the premise and what is to come... however, it felt way too intense for a first love at that age, so I was quite taken aback by the premise.
Honestly, I know the possibility of making a commitment like that even as an early adult, but I am unsure whether I could commit as a teen....
However, if it was my friend, especially so if it was a bff, any age, it would be a no-brainer.
And that marks my last read for September 2023.. four books in a day (including a re-read).
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you @netgalley

I want to start this review by saying that I think the dialogue was not believable but that I think it was because of the fact that this a translation and adaptation of the original work. It was short and took me a long time to read because I just did not get invested. The artwork was lovely and I think the story overall is good but that it would be more enjoyable had I been able to experience the original. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!
It was such a beautiful teenage love
story, brilliantly illustrated!
I appreciate how the theme of the imparted sighted people has been treated in this graphic novel, especially for young adult.
I’d wholeheartedly recommend this book!
I love stories when kids ban together to face issues that adults ignore or wouldn't handle with the appropriate amount of finesse. Both of the characters are dealing with serious issues and they rely on one another to navigate them, which I loved. I did feel like many of the issues were not resolved by the end- mainly with Victor. Without giving too many spoilers, I really wondered what will happen to Victor at the end of everything? Is he now in a place where he can continue school without help or will the people around him finally get him professional help? But I enjoyed the pacing of the story and the graphics were so beautiful; I'd love to see it made into a movie.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC! 10/10 will recommend to others.
I loved this story so much! And the illustrations were gorgeous and had a nice vintage look.
We follow two teenagers who go to the same school. One insecure boy named Victor, who plays in a rockband and has a knack for getting in trouble and saying the wrong things. But he’s a good person. And one girl named Marie. She’s smart, plays the Cello and has a degenerative eye disease with no cure.
Marie starts helping Victor to get his grades up, after they end up sitting next to eachother in class one day. They fall in love and when Marie tells Victor about her disease, which is getting worse and that she doesn’t want anyone to know about it (she has a good reason), he helps her so much, it’s beautiful. It’s the start of an adventure to make Marie’s dream come true and along the way it helps Victor too.
These characters, their dreams, their family and friends and this whole story felt so real and so well thought out. Besides maybe the part when everything “magically” worked out at one point after they got in trouble, but I forgot about that easily because what happened afterwards was beautiful.
I’m so glad I bought this graphic Novel, after being too late to download it on NetGalley.
This was quite a sweet and simple story. I thought it was absolutely adorable. The main two characters were fun and very original. I thought the book concept was actually really original as well. The scenario of the scenery was very classic with the high school setting, but I think the story and the concept of this book for stunning and I would 100% read more from this author in the future of the art, Star Wars, beautiful and the story about these two characters. Just draws you in a post on your heart strings, so I would definitely recommend. I will be looking into more books from this author in the future.
A really beautiful book and incredibly touching story.
It wasn't too sweet or saccharine, and I think it would resonate with a lot of teens, changes in themselves and generally feeling like a social outcast.
Love the depiction of sight loss and it was very sensitively done.
Do You NEED a CLASSIC Teen Romance Movie? Wholesome, Sweet, here to grab you by your heartstrings. then this is the book for you.
This feels like it could be the plot of one of those 90s/00s movies where the boy and girl end up together at the end after some impossible scenario that no teen would likely experience.
Which is honestly what made this graphic novel so great, it felt like a little piece of nostalgia just waiting to be picked up and experienced.
Thank you so much for letting me read this graphic novel. I simply loved this one. The story is so tender and heartfelt. And I love the Artwork.
What a beautiful story. I thought their love was adorable and I really enjoyed the art style! The two characters come together on a whim really and watching their relationship grow was just so beautiful. I would highly recommend this!
Beautiful artwork and a heart-warming story. My only wish is that it had been longer so the characters has longer to develop. The romance was rushed, but at the same time, it felt like an adequate pace for a 75 page story.
I LOVED IT SOO MUCH!!
It's a wonderful storytelling of a french novel with such a magnificent illustration. I'm fond of the art and the font that the creator used is sooo gorgeous.
The story of two teenagers warms my heart. It's a light reading yet packed with substantial issues such as bully, disability, and family. I hope it could have more pages yet it's already great!!
I enjoyed this… it was a bit thought to read at times, but I did eventually get through it. I think if this book finds its right audience it will be well loved.
