Cute comic filled with unicorns, magic, cats, and talking muffins. Is it ~literature~? No, but would a third grader love this? Yes, absolutely. As an adult I enjoyed the referential jokes the most. Sheboygan Convention Center made me laugh harder than necessary because it was so unexpected.
This was a pretty cute graphic novel! It’s definitely more of a middle-school aged book as it’s pretty goofy and absurd, but that will go over well with a specific crowd. The art style also fit this very well and was cute!
🌈 Queer rep: nonbinary side character
A fun and wild time as Brian learns to channel his inner spark and take full advantage of his powers. This will be a beloved middle grade graphic.
Brian Reyes is just a plain ole, run of the mill kid. Until, one day, a bump appears on his head, and it grows, and grows and grows! Now Brian is the not so proud bearer of a sparkling, singing, unicorn horn. This is devastating for a shy kid like Brian. But it seems to be his new destiny… Unicorn Boy!
I thought the story really fun and cute with the likes of breakfast muffin talking to him, or a bizarre black cat with one liners. Then the shadowy creatures from another realm show up and kidnap Brian’s best friend Avery, Brian is challenged to embrace his fate to rescue his best friend.
I felt the shadow creatures aspect went on a little too long for this reader and I became bored.
Illustrations are well done with much action and expressive faces.
The author left the ending open for a new adventure of this new super hero.
This was a very cute and enjoyable graphic novel. I think it will appeal to a wide audience and will go flying off the shelves.
This is a fun and energetic middle grade graphic novel, perfect for fans of Dog Man and other adventure stories full of humour and shenanigans. I love the art style and the representation is fantastic. I think kids will really enjoy this one
Unicorn Boy was such a fun journey! When our main character suddenly sprouts a magical horn, what's a boy to do? When his best friend is kidnapped he sets on an adventure to find them and save his friend and cats from evil! Major points to this book for the fun cat depictions and I loved seeing a non binary bestie. I definitely will be recommending this one to friends!
Friendship, acceptance, and using your superpowers for good are all themes touched on in the delightful graphic novel, Unicorn Boy. When Brian Reyes finds a bump on his head one day that quickly becomes a Unicorn Horn his bestie, Avery, doesn't bat an eye. Acceptance is immediate. But the horn isn't Brian's only problem. Soon he will be battling the evil shadows and go to the depths below to save his best friend with the help of a talking muffin (yes, that's correct - a muffin) and other fun characters.
Aimed at the middle grade reader, those that like a bit of superpower magic and overcoming obstacles will certainly enjoy this one.
Thank you to First Second Books for access to an early e-copy via Netgalley. All opinions are mine.
This is cute, adventurous, and magical! I liked the illustration style a lot and the use of color. I also liked the easy lgbtq inclusion with Avery's character/pronouns. This will be a nice addition to the middle grade graphic canon for young readers
