This coming of age friends to lovers ya romance was adorable. This story follows Riley a rebellious teenager who after graduation decides to visit her best friend Tom in NYC. Riley’s mom is not enthused about it causing them to fight. After spending the weekend with Tom she decides to stay the summer to help Tom overcome something he’s hiding and to find herself. We follow the two with their group of friends as they try to complete a bucket list of things they wanted to do after high school but while trying to complete the list the two are finding feelings for each other.
This was such a cute ya romance which is true of every Emma Lord book and why she has become one of my must read authors. The writing was cute easy to follow and fast paced. I really enjoyed the side characters in this book and really enjoyed the friend group dynamic. The plot left me wanting to know what happens next and I think it was really well done every teenager dreams of going to NYC. I really enjoy how this isn’t just another romance there are so many other relationships and issues throughout this that it felt more women’s fiction. This is similar to other Emma Lord books so if you like her others you will love this one as well. If you’re new to Emma Lord please give her a try! I would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.
Thank you so much @WednesdayBooks for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review (Release Date | 23 January 2024)
SYNOPSIS | Riley & Tom have been best friends for the majority of their lives, but things change when Tom moves to New York with his mum. It's been years since they've actually seen each other, and because of this they started to create a list of things that they wanted to do together. Recently though, they've hardly been talking. After graduation, Riley decides to take a trip to New York to surprise Tom and rekindle their friendship.
WHAT I LIKED:
- that we get to experience New York through Riley's adventures
- whole cast of loveable side characters
- the character growth of both Riley & Tom
- the author has such a knack for capturing the essence of what it means to be a young adult finding your way in the world
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- this story could have benefitted from Tom's POV
- the epilogue tried to pack too many things in
I enjoyed this one but I really do think it might be Emma Lord’s weakest? I don’t want to be inconsiderate but I just didn’t really enjoy the story itself and the characters didn’t really save it for me.
It was cute but it wasn’t anything new or jaw-dropping. It was an easily forgettable read, unfortunately.
I enjoyed this title, though Tweet Cute is still my favorite of Lord’s. This felt a bit more forced than I hoped to find, but still a cute premise overall.
Emma Lord knocked it out of the park with this one. I was captivated from chapter one. This book grabbed me, and held onto me the entire time.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to both read and listen to this title with an eARC and ALC.
This is a charming coming of age, friends to lovers, young adult romance.
Riley and Tom have been inseparable since they met. That is, until circumstance separated them when Tom's mom gets a job in NYC. Without her partner in crime, Riley finds other ways into mischief, which leads her mother scheduling her last two years of high school to death.
Upon graduation, Riley feels free and finally has the time to determine her next move, even if it's not college. What could make more sense than visiting Tom in Manhattan while she parses out her next move?
While there, Riley and Tom try to work through their co-authored Getaway List items. As they check off their bucket list tasks, they collect a group of friends that turn more into family. They also begin to realize, maybe they've always been more than friends.
This story has Emma Lord's signature plucky charm with a charming story of self-discovery and hope. I would recommend this to 14 and up kiddos as it's squeaky clean.
The audiobook took me a while to get into because the narrator has a hint of a New England accent that echoed of Moira Rose at times. It took me out of the story on more than one occasion. That could be a me thing, however.
This was a 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars for me. It wasn't remarkable in that I'd like to reread this and would have made it part of my personality, but I enjoyed it.
The Getaway list was a cute read, however I don't think I was the appropriate age group anymore since it takes place after high school graduation.
I do like the fact that Riley tried to be different from her mother and I liked some of the characters.
This was a two star mostly because I did not finish.
"The Getaway List" by Emma Lord is a delightful and heartwarming contemporary romance that takes readers on a charming journey of self-discovery and love. With engaging characters and a whimsical storyline, Lord crafts a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
The novel follows the adventures of its protagonist as she embarks on a spontaneous road trip, checking off items from a carefully curated "getaway list." Along the way, she discovers unexpected friendships, confronts her fears, and learns valuable lessons about life and love. Lord's writing is witty and relatable, making it easy to become invested in the characters' journeys.
Overall, "The Getaway List" is a feel-good read that is perfect for fans of contemporary romance. With its endearing characters and uplifting message, it's sure to leave readers with a smile on their faces and a warm feeling in their hearts.
This was sweet! I read the first half of it, but I knew exactly where it was going to so put it aside for now. Emma Lord has a really sweet writing style, imbued with a real sense of teenage innocence. I enjoyed that she was ending narrator Riley down a path of real growth and discovery; immediately following her high school graduation, Riley takes off for a summer in New York City where she reunites with her best friend Tom (who also happens to have had a glow-up in the past few years). It's clear Riley and Tom will end up together, but I also enjoyed Lord's cast of characters that make up Riley's friend. The story just felt so young to me...Riley's mother was a teen mom so there's vague references to sex and relationships, but it's really squeaky clean. It's also possible that finally in my 30s I've reached a limit on YA novels. That said, for her target audience, Lord writes really lovely, fun, and sweet books.
This coming of age, friends to more story was fun and sweet. I enjoyed the check list concept and the different adventures that it took Riley and Tom on. The group of friends they create over the summer were fun and quirky and would love to see another book featuring another one of them. This explored themes of being raised by single moms, following rules, following dreams and standing up for yourself. This would be a great summer read especially if you have a plan to Vivian New York City.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Matin’s Press/ Wednesday Books for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Any time I am feeling sad, Tweet Cute is always my favorite reread to feel better so I was beyond excited to read this. There is something so endearing about Emma Lord's Young Adult novels and I need her to write 10000 more immediately so that I have a new one to read any time I am feeling down. I was honestly a little scared going into this novel because I wasn't sure that same spark she captured before would be in this one as well but I was not disappointed at all. I am interested in seeing how her adult books are but I am now more excited to read them. Everything about this was fun, mischievous, and has you giggling the entire time. I will always recommend her novels to everyone I know.
In The Getaway List, Riley Larson, who has received rejections from all ten colleges she applied to, decides to defy her controlling mother and take back the spontaneity in her life. She heads to NYC where she reunites with her childhood friend Tom with whom she created a Getaway List. Over their three-year separation, Tom had grown distant, and Riley discovers her mother had plotted to keep them apart. Fueled by her anger, Riley decides to stay for the whole summer to work through the list with Tom and his quirky friends, camping, going to concerts, and exploring the city. Tom's screenwriter mother is on an extended stay in LA, so Riley and Tom are free to not only discover themselves, but also their romantic feelings for each other. The supporting characters are well-developed, and the author's affectionate portrayal of NYC adds to the charm of the novel.
What a lovely, sweet, and poignant coming of age novel! It keeps the light and breezy touch that Ms. Lord is known for but burrows in with a depth and tenderness that resonates with anyone, young or old, who has felt lost on their journey to find themselves.
Riley's character is especially touching and relatable. She is so full of life and fire but yet still so young and unsure of herself and her place in the world. She has courage and the determination to overcome and grow, and that is such an impressive lesson for readers to experience as they follow her through that growth. The secondary characters are also enjoyable and easy to like, each with their specific quirks and gifts. Ms. Lord did a fabulous job of painting a picture of modern day teens in a positive way, while still uncovering their youthful inexperience realistically. I do think there are times the character's insights came across as much older than their 18 years and, given the world we live in, the ability to do many of the things they did may not seem completely viable.
Still, the messages, the struggles, and the hope shine so brightly that one can't help but adore both the characters and the story. It is truly a delight and one that leaves a sweet smile as the last page turns.
Super cute as always, but that may be why I didn’t love it. Books by this author are becoming redundant and hard to distinguish between them as they are all very similar with characters who are interchangeable from each book. They all use same dialogue and similar conflicts.
Emma Lord is one of my auto-buy authors. It's always a special feeling to start her new book each year!
As with her other books, the writing in THE GETAWAY LIST is fantastic and the story is just as sweet. I adored the friendship between Riley and Tom. Their adventures and banter were adorable and had me smiling constantly. The story also had depth and was emotional; specifically Riley's relationship with her mother.
THE GETAWAY LIST is a heartwarming story of found family, friendship, and love.
I adored The Getaway List! Emma Lord is the queen of new adult books. Her characters always hit home for me and are so fun. The adventures in the Getaway List were so much fun and made me feel like I was there.
Such a cute YA read! I love the adventure in Manhattan, finding yourself as a new adult, and learning who you are without your parent's themes in this book. The perfect read for anyone!
There is something about Emma Lord's writing that just ropes me in every time. The way she writes about New York City specifically is so captivating, it not only captures the essence of the city, but makes it feel like a living breathing part of the story. Even if I can’t always resonate with the characters’ struggles she always sets the scene and mood perfectly. In this case, I wish I could’ve been part of this motley crew running around the city all summer, all while trying to find their place in the world.
This was very cute - heartwarming and pure YA. Tom and Riley’s relationship was sweet and although it felt obvious that they were into each other, for some reason it wasn’t annoying that they didn’t just talk about it. This was very teen-appropriate and had good messages about self-esteem, finding one’s own way, and the importance of family. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
I loved the idea of the best friends who have a type of bucket list together and set out to complete it. Riley visits Tom after feeling like she needs a break from the pressure of her mom and preparing for college. They decide to complete The Getaway List that they never finished before he moved.
My favorite part of this book was the cast of characters, especially the supporting characters, and their relationships.
I was a fan of Tweet Cute so I was excited to read this one by the same author. The Getaway List is a cute YA romance. It very much follows the YA formula so if you love that, you will love this.
