This was a heartbreaking read detailing Mehreen, Cara, and Olivia as they meet on a website that plans out the date of their suicide. All three girls battled different demons and I loved the friendship that formed between them; the friendship was the highlight of the book. I would have rated this higher but did not because of how much I despised Cara. She was vicious to everyone around her and used her mom as a verbal punching bag, and her mom would take the abuse. Olivia and Mehreen even tell Cara that she is awful to her mom several times. She even treats Olivia and Mehreen horribly and they brush it off as Cara being Cara. Despite all girls having narratives, Olivia's was written in prose and was not featured much throughout the story. I think if she had more chapters then I would have not hated Cara as much as I did since there would be less time focused on her. Thank you NetGalley for an ARC.
Despite the triggering content, I was about to see, why this book could be relatable to others who suffer from mental health. It's always a wonderful feeling to connect with characters in a book and feel less alone in your own experiences.
While this book wasn't my cup of tea, I hope another reader finds comfort in it.
I actually wanted to read the authors other book which is about friendship + abusive families while this one is friendship + suicide which I'm much less inclined to, but I did read it, so hey.
*I really enjoyed Mehreen's character and her connection to Islam. She was just very relatable and sweet.
*I liked the other character's storylines less, which detracted from my overall enjoyment of the book, but it was still a fine three-star read
*The whole MementoMori plot line was also just not up my alley. Not bad per se, just not for me.
*Something about this book just gives off complete like 2014 YA vibes, I cannot say why but it does.
Wow- what a powerful YA book that dealt with a host of tough topics such as suicide, sexual abuse, death, depression, and anxiety.
In this book Mehreen, Cara, and Olivia form a “pact” through a website to commit suicide with the support of one another. I loved how their friendship helped bring each of them out of their own darkness. The story reiterated to me the importance of friendship, and encouraging one another because we never know what someone else is going through. Something else I thought was special about this book was that each main character was very different from one another not only in the reasons they wanted to commit suicide but in race and socioeconomic status. I think that’s something that will make this book appeal to many different groups of young people.
The writing is solid, and I knew going into this that it was going to be a heavy book, but the way the disability content is handled wasn't quite for me.
I highly recommend reading this with the company of someone that you can lean on. This book hits many hard topics and how people react to situations and depression in various ways. I cried so many tears but it was very well written and highlighted some incredibly difficult subjects.
First off, I'm not sure if this book was published before or not, because I found another version of the book published in 2019. I'll be writing my review for this version on goodreads because this is the review I read (incase they really are different books).
Ok, the characters are chefs kiss! I loved each and every one of them, and their bravery and courage just made me feel more attached to each of them.
Mehreen has anxiety and I can tell you first hand this was an AMAZING portrayal of anxiety. The intrusive thoughts telling you you're not good enough, the constant chaos. The thing with anxiety is, it weighs you down like a rock and dominates your mind. You feel like you can't do anything, nothing is possible because you're worthless useless. Mehreen was so raw and it was heartbreaking to read her point of view. I loved Mehreen and I loved how the author wrote about anxiety, I haven't related to a book this much in a long time!
Cara is disabled from an accident that she believes she caused. She believes she "k**led" her dad. You can imagine how the burden of this and the disability itself might affect a person. The author wrote her point of view so well. I could feel the anger in her. I'm not disabled nor have I ever been so I can't say how realistic this in real life but I could imagine it very realistically so kudos to the author.
Olivia. Oh my Olivia. Everything in her story was so true. Her thoughts"Who would believe me a lowly girl over a lawyer". This is so common! Read Marilyn Monroe's story, who would believe her over a grown respectable man. I wish this was talked about more, so we could bring light that it is SO SO important to listen to the victim to tell girls we believe you we love you and we protect you. The author handled this issue so well, and thank you so much for the ending. Olivia deserved it, we deserved a happy ending for her. I HOPE THAT RASCAL GOES TO HELL.
Overall the authors approach to mental health issues, rape and disabilities was amazing! I'll admit I wasn't very sure of this suicide pact thing but beautiful plot and beautiful handling of these very prominent issues. The journey from beginning to end was very raw and emotional, it was smooth and showed me that humans are humans and will be willing to help others but not willing to accept help from others. The friendship formed from this was beautiful, I recommend reading for EVERYONE, sheds light to very important issues. Mental health is not something to take lightly, so please please reach out for help if you need it. Will definitely be reading more from this author :D
Wow. This book portrays mental health in a very raw and real way. I will say, it is incredibly trigging so please be careful and read a trigger list before reading. But, aside from that, I really enjoyed it. I found it very comforting and relatable. It made me feel less alone, and I found a bit of myself in all the characters. I also like the way it ends with a bit of hope. It very much gives it can get better vibes and sometimes you just need to know that it can. I definitely cried a bit though. Olivia's story hit incredibly close to home and I just felt so seen.
I have been lost in a book slump for quite some time, unable to get through one without trying another, until I gave this one a try. It sucked me in quickly and kept my attention, to the point where I was counting down the time at work until I could go home and finish it. This was a great mix of a YA and thriller; a story about friendship and finding the light to help you hang on in your darkest times. I appreciate the hope that this book aims to convey while tackling mental health. The transitions from prose to verse to convey different characters’ POV was also well done. While this book can absolutely be triggering to some, and there is a content warning that should be heeded if applicable, it is ultimately an enthralling and quick read whose characters you will genuinely root for.
