This was my first arc and I wanted to love it, sometimes I did, but it got so difficult to follow. The separation between what was happening with her husband and everything else was extremely difficult for me to keep up with. It just seemed rushed and poorly written. This was a DNF, I don’t recommend.
I really tried to give this story a chance but I got to 77% and could not force myself to go any further.
The writing feels clunky and convoluted. The characters are complex but not in a way that feels easy for the reader to follow. I spent a lot of time going back over what I read because the further I got into the story and the mystery that each character was involved in the more confused I felt, and not in a way that left me wanting to continue reading and trying to solve this "great mystery".
All that to say, I don't know what was going on, I don't know how it ended, I don't care to find out, and that sucks.
This was my very first approved request from netgalley. Thank you Ava Wixx and netgalley for this opportunity.
Completely a great, intriguing 4.75 rating book for me. The synopsis immediately grabbed my attention but I had no idea where that would take me. I couldn't imagine how it would feel to be an empathy but with Ava's writing it was a nice glimpse into that scenario. I felt like I was reading a spicy, sci-fi version of a criminal minds episode. The flash back chapters did seem a little repetitive but I understood the necessity of the information. Can't wait to read more.
I did not manage to read this unfortunately, due to unforeseeable issues at home. I did not manage to read this unfortunately, due to unforeseeable issues at home.
This book was an interesting one. The majority of the book was a flash back to explain the main character's background and it was very odd. I felt like nothing with the main plot actually happened because the majority of it was the flashback. I thought the concept of this story was so cool when I read the summary, but I didn't enjoy the execution of it. It was weird and I'm honestly not sure if one plot line was every solved. This book just was not for me.
Sexy dramatic twist on a mystery. I was intrigued by the plot and enjoyed the way it was built up. At times it felt rushed but I think it was well worth getting to the end!
Ava Wixx created an amazing story within Feeling Love Beyond Death, combining elements of sci-fi, mystery, and thriller with a splash of semi-spicy scenes. While the end of the book finalized too quickly for my personal tastes, the overall storyline and character development leading up to the ending were thoughtful and full of surprising twists that kept me turning the page! Boasting a unique plot premise, as well as an unconventional “flashback” style of writing - this is a book you are not going to want to miss out on!
Thank you to NetGallery for the the opportunity.
I really enjoyed this book. The whole entire concept of this books was interesting. The characters were well written and I found myself reading this book super fast.
I’m neither here nor there with this book. Unfortunately I just couldn’t get into it like I wanted and kept getting distracted.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ava Wixx for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.
I really wanted to like this book. The concept was super intriguing, and I wanted to see it play out. Unfortunately, it did not take long to feel like there was just too much happening. It felt rushed and poorly executed. I wish I had more to say, but I honestly couldn’t get through it.
I will start off by saying that the concept of this book is *chef's kiss*. There's so much potential here, not only for this book but also for the trilogy as a whole.
I had a few complaints with this book, which I will go into, and I find myself thinking something that I rarely do - I wish this book was 200 pages longer so some of these items could have been fleshed out entirely.
I really enjoyed the strip club setting, I would have enjoyed staying in that setting longer. Learning about the inner workings of a club, and the found-family aspects of those that work there, would have been a nice balance to the dark romance and dark mystery aspects of this story.
There was very little world-building in this book, I wanted to know more about the organization these characters work for and how these abilities and organizations operate in the world as a whole.
I felt that the romance was told to us, instead of shown to us. I wanted to know more about WHY the main couple loved each other - I never felt as though I fully understood their connection.
The mystery plot of the book took a complete side-line through about 40% to 80%. This plot was my favorite part, so when the plot wrapped up I was left feeling very dissatisfied since there was very little lead-up to how we got there.
This book is SPICY - not in a highly graphic nature, but in quantity. If they aren't acting out the spice, they are imagining it or experiencing it in their minds. I do enjoy my spice in books so that's not the issue, and I will say that in this book it did lend itself to the character arcs and plot, but the quantity was overwhelming at times and I found myself skimming most of it.
But that all being said, the biggest concern that led to my lessening enjoyment of the story was how the reader is very rarely given a chance to breathe. At the beginning of the book where there are moments where we can take a step back from the darkness of the mystery and romance. We follow our FMC when she is working in the club, and even when it goes to the flashbacks this is still the only time we are given a chance to step away from it all and see the world outside of the main characters. Other than that, we are solely with our main characters throughout the entirety. Very rarely is a secondary character brought in.
Overall, I felt this book could benefit from 100-200 more pages for the reader to acclimate themselves to this new world, the complexities of the empath abilities, flesh out the primary and secondary characters and their motivations, and get emotionally involved in the relationships and the mystery plot as a whole. What we've seen of the world so far and the mystery plot has a tonne of potential and I hope that future books can build from this and expand it.
Thanks Netgalley and author for allowing me to read a copy of Feeling Love After Death before release in exchange for an honest review!
I’m going to preface this review with the fact that this book was a bit not what I was expecting and thus a bit out of my range of usual reads. While it does have aspects that I enjoy (mystery, unique powers), the writing style, characters, and general flow of the story left a lot to be desired for me. That’s JUST me. I can def see this being a solid read for others!
The beginning of the book has an open and honest letter from the author in regards to elements of their story that might be triggering to some, which I appreciated. So before you read, check the author’s warnings in case there are triggers that don’t work with you!
The story is honestly a fascinating one with a bit of an unusual concept. Sam is apart of some mysterious organization attempting to catch a serial killer. However, her personal life is being thrown off kilter by sexual dreams with a fantasy man - or is he merely just a fantasy? I thought she just worked with the FBI or her local police department, but pretty quickly I figured out that, no, there’s something else going on here, and Sam appears to be in the dark just as much as the reader is. Pretty quickly, the author hooked me into the story with it’s fast paced plot and intriguing take on a spicy murder mystery that I honestly was not expecting. My main genre is fantasy, so having elements of “magic” in a mundane tale about catching a serial killer made the story feel right up my alley.
The author spends the first half of the story making the reader feel uneasy. Something isn’t right. Something about Sam’s husband isn’t right. Something about this organization isn’t right. Something is missing. Hints are dropped well, foreshadowing the truth of what actually happened to Sam, who she is, and her purpose in the scheme of things. I actually appreciated this feeling of unease. It kept me drawn into the story, kept me paying close attention and trying to unravel the far more important mysteries of Sam.
About half-way through the story, the timeline swaps to 6 years in the past and this is where I started to struggle with the characters. Sam turns into the stereotypical “girl next door that every guy who meets her wants to fuck”. And that’s it. That’s all there is to the characters. I got yanked out of the mystery and plot line with unending amounts of spice from one guy that just continuously gave me the creeps and the other who apparently all the ladies wanted to fuck.
The next 30% of the book revolves entirely around relationship drama and sex. The entire murder mystery premise dropped off the face of the earth as suddenly the goal of the story swaps from catching a serial killer to daytime soap opera. Since this really isn’t up my alley, I wont say more. I know others will absolutely devour this like candy. If this is your jam, you’re gonna love it!
Around 87% (yes I kept track), we finally jump back into the murder mystery plot and it all just still fell quite short for me. The ending was somewhat satisfying, but by the time I reached it, I was definitely fully pulled out of the story.
Still, I’m giving Feeling Love Beyond Death a 3 star rating as the writing and author’s voice is good and solid, the characters stayed generally on track with their personalities, and the premise of the story was originally very intriguing! I think the issue is, I found this in the “Mystery” genre and that fooled me into thinking this story would be more Mystery first, Spice and romance second. If spicy romance is your flavor, then you’ll love this book.
