As an avid hockey lover who has been really into hockey romances lately, I was very excited for this book. Unfortunately, I just could not get into this book and stopped reading it pretty early on, around 45-50% into the book. It is short so I hoped that I could push through but sadly, I just couldn’t. I did absolutely love Poppy and Logan. There is something about a father/daughter duo that gets me every time but that’s where the love of this book ended for me. The book felt a bit repetitive and while I was promised hockey AND figure skating, most of the scenes that I did read happened in the hospital. After about halfway through the book, I just could not handle the hospital scenes anymore. I wish that I could have finished it to see if it would get better but I just couldn’t force myself to do it.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was cute novella. I’m not sure if it was classified as one but it was very short. The story was an interesting tale and I enjoyed reading something different than the playboy hockey player, but over all it fell a little short for me. I enjoyed Logan and Coco’s flirty bantered, but as soon as she was mad at him it felt like he started love-bombing her and that made me uncomfortable. The ending felt very rushed and kind of odd. The last chapter most definitely could have been an epilogue to get us into the next book, instead it felt like an ad?
Not sure if I’d recommend it, but it wasn’t the worst book I’ve read.
Fans of icebreaker will definitely love this book. Hockey romance is definitely a niche genre that the author accomplished very well. I loved the MMC and the FMC was also well developed. The romance was clean and realistic with very mature decisions and no miscommunication. Thank you NetGalley for an advanced ARC copy of this book.
I am a sucker for dual POV!
Did talk about the book with a friend who recommended watching "The Cutting Edge (1992)" which I didn't know existed but after finishing this book I feel like I'd also enjoy the film.
It was a good book, only reason I didn't rate 4stars is because I don't think it's memorable enough. Would I read the series out of curiosity? Definitely
The way the ending set's up the next book is perfect.
Side note, 'food synergy' don't know why but I found it hilarious and memorable
I read this book in 24 hours! What can I say, I love a hockey romach! Coco was everything, ultimate woman! Logan rivers was amazing! I really enjoyed the story line, the fact that there was a bit of a twist in the tale near the end when I thought the story was going to go another way!
Such a fun read. A cute romcom between an NHL player, Logan, and an Olympic figure skater, Coco. Flirty chemistry between these two....which I loved. A great read for this sport romance loving girl.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Cute book! The writing style was fine and Logan was a cinnamon role. His daughter was adorable. Coco was harder for me to connect with though. I'll look for the next book.
I did want more of the figure skating part. It felt like a missed opportunity here.
“You’re not the kind of person who’s easy to forget”
The Cutting Edge by Lisa Daily is a friends-to-lovers novel, following competitive figure skater Coco and hockey team captain Logan. Coco has a class teaching kids how to figure skate, and she gets hit with a hockey puck landing her in the hospital. The guy who hit the puck, Logan, continually went to see her at the hospital to apologize and make sure she was okay.
The romance in this book was fast paced, which didn’t go hand in hand with the plot which was seemingly slow paced- at the half way point of reading you’re still on day three of her being in the hospital. Which brings me to my next point, I had high hopes with this ice skating/hockey romance, but although we saw a lot of hockey we didn’t see much ice skating at all.
I liked Logan’s daughter, Poppy, she was so sweet throughout the novel- and her interactions with both her dad and Coco were so adoring. Logan was also a decent character, although at points it felt like he was trying to overachieve her forgiveness at points where she already forgave him. Coco was a nice character at the beginning, but towards the end I started to dislike her harshness towards Logan about the situation- she seemed inwardly bitter about it throughout the novel.
The banter between Coco and Logan was really nice because you can feel their chemistry. Also seeing the outcomes of both of their career goals at the end was really sweet, and let’s face it- it made me shed some happy tears.
This was a really cute quick romcom read, and will definitely place a smile on your face. Thank you to Lisa Daily and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Cutting Edge by Lisa Daily was a cute easy read, telling the story of a whirlwind romance between a figure skater and a NHL hockey player. I loved Coco's drive and that despite her romance with Logan, she refused to put her dreams on the sidelines. Similarly Logans determination to date her, and his focus on her and his daughter were absolute goals! The banter between the two main characters was excellent, although I did feel that the third act was a little rushed and the plot was mostly predictable. Despite this, it was an enjoyable read with a satisfying ending that nicely sets up the next book, which I look forward to reading. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a simple read full of fun tropes.
Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and Lisa Daily for the opportunity to read this. :)
This was a cute rom-com between NHL player Logan Rivers and Olympic figure skater Coco Charmant. Right from the start you can see the flirtatious banter between the two of them. Their conversation never felt force and the audience could see the love right away. I appreciated the pop culture references that were sprinkled throughout. Also, where do I sign up to have someone bring me a candlelight lobster dinner to me in the hospital?!?! Overall, the perfect light hearted romance book to use as a palate cleanser.
Thank you NetGalley, Lisa Daily, and the publisher for the the ARC!
Overall, this book was a cute hockey x figure skater romance. The edition I received wasn’t the final, there were a few places where it repeated because it was being rewritten: a scene would start one way then the characters would almost reset and run through it again. The overall writing isn’t bad, but it was a little hard to read in places. The beginning of the book is very slow, but I was invested in Poppy, so I didn’t DNF the book.
This is also promoted as a steamy romance, it’s not. There is a spicy scene, but it’s only the one. Other than it its reading the characters respective pinning and admiration for the other. Which is very cute, but not steamy.
What kept me reading the book in the beginning was Poppy, Logan’s daughter. She is absolutely adorable and seeing Logan being such a great dad was so sweet. A great peak behind the rough hockey player and that it is becoming more normal for girl dads to do things with their daughters without being a threat to their masculinity. Give us more dads who aren’t afraid to wear nail polish.
Something I was able to relate to was Coco’s struggle with her finish in the Olympics. In the books Tokyo Olympics, she choked and got 4th place, and while she got gold with the team, it’s not the same as winning your own gold. When she gets Logans accidentally hockey puck to the head, she worries this will set her back and ruin her chances of something she’s been working toward her entire life. I am a competitive cheerleader, and we have our own versions of the Olympics and top tier competitions, but so few people ever make it to that level. I have competed at one of the top competitions, and I’m still training to hopefully compete at the others, but I am close to the typical retirement age for female athletes if not past it. I will have to try even harder to prove that I deserve a spot on a team competing, and I am putting in the work, but when I have a bad session sometimes it feels that these dreams of mine won’t come to fruition. The main takeaway for Coco’s journey is don’t give up and sometimes its okay to have help when you need it. While it seems like a simple lesson, it’s the most important one to learn. You cannot do everything yourself, and when you need it and it’s offered, you can accept the help from the people around you.
ARC for The cutting edge - Lisa Daily.

This book was an okay-ish read, it was slow. I’m giving it the rating I am because while some points throughout the book were tough at times I really liked some of the characters. Especially Poppy who actually had me laughing at one point.
I think if you’re looking for a quick and easy read this would be a good buffer between other books. It’s cute.
This was delightfully awful! I mean, you know how it’s going to end from about page 2 but I enjoyed getting there! It needs a serious edit before hitting the shelves - more mistakes than I’m used to in an ARC copy. Devoured in a day, an easy beach read.
3.5 stars!
Imagine falling for the hockey player who may have just ruined your dream of competing in the Olympics.
Coco takes an accidental hockey puck to the head while trying to do a good deed one day and finds her life totally derailed. Suddenly she’s unable to work or practice her figure skating, she’s being showered in gifts by the burly, gorgeous hockey player who hit the slap shot, and has somehow fallen into a new role as his “lucky charm”
Watching Coco and Logan navigate their relationship was super cute. Logan is riddled with guilt while also dealing with some major feelings for Coco who is struggling to juggles her romantic feelings for the man who may have just ruined her life.
This was a super cute, fun romcom with some great banter between characters!
Tropes:
Sports romance
He falls first
Single dad
When the story deviates from the blurb it feels like cheating. I was expecting hockey and figure skating to be fodder but it was the hospital (60% of the story happens there) and the lucky charm thing was like an afterthought.
There were typos, errors, and repetitive paragraphs and it was weirdly structured.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book received from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
2.5
A little disappointed if I’m honest.
The pacing for this felt so off and all over the place-it both felt like things were going too fast but that the story was moving too slowly at the same time-14 chapters for 3 days of story is absurd!
The conflict was far-fetched and also lacking in tension. Both of them screwed up but only one got angry and then suddenly she’d forgiven him. Oh and don’t forget the random arrival of her apparently violent ex who served no purpose other than to let our cinnamon roll MMC go all alpha for a split second.
I did like the main characters and I’m even intrigued by Cam and Lana’s story. Logan’s relationship with Poppy is adorable, and I enjoyed the he falls first and hard aspect.
The book could’ve easily been closed door with only one smut scene more than 80% into the book.
I don’t allow editing issues to affect my review but it’s important to note that the NetGalley edition needs some serious editing-from repeated paragraphs, characters names changing two or three times (Mrs.Markham, Marham, and Markle!!), to the odd switch to third person for a very short spell at 91%-and those were just the glaring issues.
This book had a lot of potential.
I just feel like it wasn’t executed properly.
So much of the story was at the hospital.
The balance of love scenes didn’t make sense.
Would read another book by this author though!
A sweet hockey romance! This book was a fun read filled with some of my favorite tropes. Coco is an Olympic figure skater with dreams of winning her first gold medal after a 4th place finish at the last games. Logan is a professional hockey player and single father trying to bounce back from a few goalless games. After a 103 mph slap shot to the head forces them together, sparks fly and their chemistry is undeniable. Logan might have found his new good luck charm and Coco might have finally found a man who will support all of her dreams. First they just need to get out of their own way.
This book was so cute! It was a slow to medium burn with a cinnamon roll mmc who falls first. The book was exactly what you want from a sweet sports rom com. There was some miscommunication and a third act break up. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the fun characters.
If you’re into cute hockey/sport romances then this book is for you! “The cutting edge” by Lisa daily is perfect for those looking for a quick and easy romance. Lisa’s writing had me wanting to learn more and more about the characters and their personalities while also being invested in their happy ending. This book had just the perfect amount of drama and romance and only took me about 3 days to read. Would highly recommend and can’t wait to read other titles by Lisa daily.
This is a really lovely meet cute- it has all the elements that I love- strong fmc, sweet mmc- he falls first. I think that one of the things that makes this one unique is that the author brings up issues such as being under insured, the economic uncertainties of being a gig worker, the problems with workmens comp. This really helps to make the story more realistic, I think the toughest thing for many olympic hopefuls is funding their dreams and this does not get glossed over.
