A picture book teaching kids about the importance of play and STEAM concepts. But using a cute story so that they don't realize that they are learning.
How to Catch a Mamasaurus is part of the "How To Catch" series of 30 books. This one is a little different, as instead of the main story being about planning and building traps, the group of children make gifts and things to say thank-you to their mother. This is a great Mother's Day gift. The children share all the things that their mamasaurus has done for them such as fulfilling their dreams, playing with them, putting them to bed and kissing them goodnight, going shopping, preparing meals, leaving them little notes etc. I loved the list of jobs that mamasaurus does, it is packed, but right on the mark. The kids still create a few traps, and make big messes, showing imagination, creativity and co-operation. They can't wait to tell her and show her that they love her. As a mom and grandma, I loved this book. It shows how much mothers do for their children in a fun, humorous and creative way. My grandson loved the kids, and the messes they made. We talked about the various jobs a mother does and he finally agreed with some of them, but the doctor was one he couldn't agree with, nurse, okay. The illustrations by Andy Elkerton was wonderful and add so much to the story. I think my grandson liked those more than the story as he spent a lot of time checking them out and showing me things he noticed. I am going to buy a copy of this book for him to give his mother for her upcoming birthday.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I didn't love this book as much as I hoped. It's okay but nothing special. Kids who like dinosaurs might really enjoy.
This was such a cute book! My kids love all of the “how to catch…l books! My four year old has asked me multiple times to read this book to her.
Well, my third time of asking with this author is probably the best experience of the lot, but it still wasn't great. Each lively spread has a four-line verse, but not halfway through you do wonder if this alleged love letter to mothers is actually focused on the right thing – most of the time the lines seem to be concentrating on "us" and "we" as opposed to "her" and "she". It's not criminally bad, but if it's a gift for Mothers' Day and suchlike, shouldn't it appeal more to the recipient than the donor, whatever exact sentiment it holds?
This was a fun book to read. The illustrations were beautiful and really helped move the story along. We see these kids trying to capture something, but this proves to be harder than they expected it to be. Once this adventure comes to a close, they all come to a surprise realization. Most kids will have a great time reading this book.
How to Catch a Mamasaurus
By Alice Walstead
This book was refreshing in the way that the author captured the perspective of children towards their "Mamasaurus" or Mama. It gives children the credit of thinking of their mothers and contributing to their mothers who work hard to care for their children, their families, and their overall lives. The story acknowledges how mothers diligently give the time and effort towards caring for their children to learn manners, to care for their safety and well-being, and the fact that Mamas will always love their children regardless of their challenges, the stressors they impress upon their mamas, and are loved unconditionally because they are their mamas children.
This was a joy to read with my toddler dude, who reminds me of how loved I am as his Mama, just as this book does for all Mamasauruses.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #SourcebooksKids, and #AliceWalstead for the ARC.
The mischievous kids of "How to Catch" are back with a new target: the elusive Mamasaurus! Known for her unmatched spirit and boundless kindness, this unique creature is the ultimate challenge for our young adventurers. As they embark on their quest to catch her, they reflect on all the ways Mamasaurus enriches their lives with love and support.
This delightful dinosaur picture book is a perfect gift for children aged 4-10 to share with Mom on special occasions like Mother's Day, Christmas, and beyond. Filled with whimsical rhymes and lively illustrations, it's sure to bring joy to young readers and educators alike. Plus, with its incorporation of STEAM concepts and classic chaos, it's an entertaining and educational read for all!
This would be such a cute book to give for Mother’s Day!
As a mom of two this book is so sweet to receive from the kids. I like how the author really got me in my feels about what it is like to truly be a mom. We carry such a load sometimes and it goes unnoticed. But this book reminds us that the family does see how much we do even if they don’t listen all the time. I loved this book! I read it with my daughter and she thought it was special too.
This was cute, but a little long and meandering. The illustrations made this book look vintage, and didn’t really appear to match the tone of the book.
My children love the How To Catch series and this one was just as beautifully illustrated as the others. It would make a great Mother's Day gift from a young child because it talks about how wonderful moms are and how they do everything and anything for their children.
The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it didn't feel like the other books in the sense of actually trying "to catch" the Mamasaurus.
Thank you to Alice Walstead, SOURCEBOOKS Kids, and Netgalley for this ARC
I was excited for this book, as when I was a teacher I really enjoyed this series. However, as a mom I was a little disappointed in the execution. I wished they would have just gone with How to Catch a Mom, rather than turning the mom into a dinosaur. I also wish that it had more of how to catch a mom, rather than describing all the things that a mother can do and does. Overall it was just not what I wanted and did not meet my expectations.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A very cute story. Would be perfect for a Mother’s Day gift!! The illustrations are bright and interesting. My kids love this series and enjoyed the book. (Ages 2 and 5)
We are big fans of the "How to Catch a..." series in our household. My kids always love the illustrations and rhyming throughout the story. This was a quick and fun read. The pictures are bright and colorful which got the kids attention. They thought several of the illustrations were very funny. They loved finding new silly things the kids were doing while flipping through each time. This would be a wonderful book for children who love dinosaurs! We will be adding this to our collection once it is released.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Wonderland for this ARC to review!
My kids love all the How to Catch books so they were excited to read this one. They love the bright colorful artwork and rhyming words. I really liked how it shows kids just how much moms do for them throughout the day.
I volunteered to read this ARC through NetGalley
Very cute addition to the How to Catch series. What a wonderful tribute to the amazing mothers there are. You’ll want to get this one to read with her
Thank you to net galley for this ARC.
Compared to all the other books this one was disappointing. They didn't set traps or try to catch the mamasaurus.
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read and review this book! What a fun story! My dinosaur-loving son will love this! It is fun for families of dinosaur-loving young people.
