Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this novel and this is my freely given opinion.
We return to Willowbrook again, with young Dr. James Edwards, a talented physician and surgeon who has been lured to the growing town to manage the local surgery and run his own practice. He was mentored in London by a famed surgeon and it was expected by many that he would follow in his footsteps and work in an illustrious London hospital, and wed his mentor's daughter. However, that is not what James desired, so he eschewed London for the small town of Willowbrook.
Jenny Dawson is the local midwife and healer, following generations of healers in her family. She had lost her mother and grandmother to typhoid 10 years prior, but learned from them, and follows her grandmother's written receipts of time proven herbal remedies. She is a trusted and valued healer in the community.
When James and Jenny meet, there is friction as James has many of the prejudices against herbalism, and women healers that the patriarchal modern medicine establishment has, and he inadvertently insults and disrespects Jenny. But as they get to know each other and work at times together. he learns to respect her insight and knowledge, and they begin to work at the surgery together since they both meet different needs of the community.
Jenny is reluctant to grow too close to James, especially seeing how talented he is, because she knows that he is destined for greater things than Willowbrook, and she must face that he will leave the town and her behind one day. However, their attraction and appreciation for each other only grows. James comes to realize that he loves the town, and Jenny and that is the future he wants, and he has to prove this to her as well. His past however comes between the two of them and makes this an even more difficult task for James.
This is a very sweet story of slow burning love, between the couple, and the small town. I loved the herbal lore/medical aspect of the story too, and the gender conflict aspect as well. There was a bit of unexpected drama near the end of their HEA, but it fit the story and I liked the twist and drama it added to a relatively tepid, sweet romance. Well written story that drew me in and I generally quite liked.
3.5 rounded up to 4 stars out of 5, rounded up because of the medical interest/healing aspect of the story - it made it more appealing for me personally.
He is a "modern" day doctor, she is a traditional one, so it's nice to see how they balance their believes and how that impact on their relationship. It's a very nice read for the story.
This is the third book in The Willowbrook Series but can easily be read as a standalone. I have read the previous books and enjoyed them very much and this one was no different. Dr James Edwards decides to leave the hustle and bustle of London life behind and moves to Willowbrook. The townspeople happily take him in and appreciate all he does for them. But that doesn't sit well with the local herbalist and midwife, Jenny. She stands by her own proven methods and is skeptical of the modern medical techniques used by the good doctor. He is also skeptical of Jenny at first, but he is also very attracted to her and has an open mind. James has really grown to love the townspeople and is determined to convince her that they can both respect each other's work and work together to combine their knowledge to provide the best medical care for the them.
This was a well-written and delightful story and it had endearing and strong characters. James and Jenny were perfect for each other and they immediately stole my heart. I enjoyed seeing them work together and learning to respect each other's work. This was a lovely addition to the series and I am glad to have had the opportunity to read it!
I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
A Bitter Pill to Swallow. I totally loved this story. The writer gave me a sweet and very heartwarming love story. Jenny and James are two people whom their town love and respect completely. James at first site instantly falls in love with Jenny. Jenny her self feels that the doctor has gone mad.
I feel that their courtship was excellently written. The writer created the story so beautifully that you could feel that love through their dialogue between one another. James and Jenny try to work together as they both have special skills that would be helpful to the community. I loved the moments of laughter and fun moments among the characters. I enjoyed the entertainment between all the characters during times of haste and survival.
This is a fantastic story. I definitely had a fun time reading and I look forward to more stories coming from this series. I give this story two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Dr James Edwards could be the next great town doctor, but answering Willowbrook's call for their own doctor may be the best decision he ever made. He's busier than ever, and the townspeople really appreciate all the work he does for them. The only issue is the local herbalist and midwife, Jenny Dawson, whose time proven methods are hard to compete with, as is her bedside manner. Convincing Jenny that they can work together, and combine their medical knowledge is one thing, but protecting his heart is something that even this doctor may not be able to do.
I found this book so fun, and I honestly couldn't put it down. James accepted the vacant doctor position in Willowbrook, and had really found his place in the small town. He loved helping the townspeople, more than he ever did in London, and the work was so varied that he was never bored. Meeting the lovely Jenny Dawson, who had been the town's sole medical provider for the last 10 years, suing herbal methods, and delivering more babies than she could count, was an eye opening experience for James. He was shocked with how quickly he started relying on her expertise, and how much he cared for her. James learnt as much from Jenny as she did from him, though there were moments when they clashed heads over their ideas. Seeing them work side by side was wonderful, and there were some really heartfelt moments when it seemed that they may never be able to be together. The climax of the action was obvious in coming, but the aftermath took my breath away, and I was nearly cheering by the final pages. A great Victorian romance!
Is There Room for Two Healers in a Small Village?
He is a modern doctor; she uses the old methods of healing; could they coexist? Two people find themselves falling in love, but what will it take for them to have a meeting of the minds? He is convinced women cannot be doctors. Will he open his mind when he sees her healing magic at work? James is falling in love with Jenny and her small village, but a trip to London brings trouble to his new home. The peril he brings might prove to be deadly. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who like historical romance with a dash of suspense.
A sweet, clean romance of an herbalist and midwife in the village of Willowbrook and the new doctor. Sceptical of Jenny's methods of healing, Dr.James Edwards learns how successful they really are. Jenny learns to use a stethoscope and performing surgeries while falling in love with the doctor. She doesn't think he will stay and practice in Willowbrook. More and more, he doesn't see himself leaving to practice in London. A deadly disease and a woman from James' past will test the strength of their love. Very easy to read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
A short and sweet read about a new age doctor and a village healer.
I enjoyed both characters, the plot was well paced and well resolved. This is the first offering from the author and I'm keen to explore the rest of the series.
Thank you Netgalley and Dragonblade for this ARC, opinions are my own.
The doctor and the midwife start out on "uneven" levels because how can modern medicine be trumped or even helped by herbal remedies. But eventually that changes. Of course nothing can go easily so there are a few bumps along the road but they are eventually overcome.
A sweet book for a pleasant weekend read.
I recieved a free copy so that I might tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book.
In this book we follow a herbalist /midwife and a young doctor. Can the two prefessions combine ? Will their be sparks between them. I really enjoyed this book.
Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest
A first read for me from Laura Landon and I took a chance on selecting the book. Although the book is more of a novella, boy does it fit a lot in! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know both Jenny and James as well as the entire village of Willowbrook. I did not realise this is part of a series and will definitely look for the other books. A very enjoyable romance with a touch of danger which I didn't expect. A lovely, easy read and highly recommended. Thank you to Dragon blade and Netgalley for the chance to read this author. I look forward to more.
The third book in the series, it follows midwife Jenny and James, a doctor from London. In the quaint yet up and coming town of Willowbrook, Jenny is a beloved healer while James is a doctor of modern medicine. With their different methods of treatment, they initially clash. The story progresses with James coming to think of the town as his home and appreciating and respecting Jenny as a partner. With exes and epidemic outbreaks, James and Jenny must figure out a way to get their happy ending.
The book is 109 pages long, making it more of a novella. The author managed to fit in a complete romance with conflicts and resolutions in a small number of pages, resulting in the fast pace of the book. It was perfect for a short, sweet read to help one get out of a reading slump to get a step closer to achieving their reading goal. This is one of those rare books where I have read about traditional methods of healing without the author displaying contempt for the same. Natural remedies in a world of modern medicine are often ridiculed, a concept that the author dealt with great consideration. I liked James as a character, with his openness to learn about opinions contrary to his. He grew in his perception of society and the people who comprise it.
However, I couldn’t fall completely in love with the book because the main trope is not one I gravitate towards. If a reader is a fan of the 'Insta-love' trope, I'm sure they'll thoroughly enjoy this book. For me, the lack of buildup led to me not connecting with the characters. There was a fair amount of repetition in the characters' thoughts and their dialogues. Verbatim reiteration made me skim some portions of the book. Overall, a fun read that made me laugh out loud at the banter the characters shared.
Jenny, a country herbalist and midwife, is worried when a young doctor comes to her town to start his practice. James, thinking to start out in the country and possibly return to London, comes to accept Jenny’s help and practices. Will he decide to stay? I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest
This is my first book by this author and in this series and I had no issue jumping into book three. James is slightly arrogant when we meet him but his feelings and respect for Jenny grows so he is much less dismissive of Jenny’s abilities to heal. I think because it is closed door I was expecting the kissing to be a little more descriptive but I appreciated that Jenny knew what she wanted and that was James’ lips on hers. Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a sweet historical romance that's part of a series set in a growing village outside London. Each book in the series can be read on it's own.
This one is about the new doctor in town and the herbalist/midwife who grew up there.
Both our lead characters are experts in their field but not necessarily in each other's. This can cause friction.
An enjoyable read.
James is a brilliant doctor and surgeon who could probably make quite a name for himself in London, but he chooses to set up practice in Willowbrook, where he feels he is needed. Jenny is a healer like her grandmother and mother before her. She is also the local midwife. She is extremely knowledgeable about plants and herbs that help healing. James likes Jenny, but he criticizes her healing methods as old and ineffective. It doesn’t take long for him to learn he might be wrong. There is an instant attraction between James and Jenny. They soon begin to work together and learn from each other. Things get a bit dicey when a crisis hits the town. This is a lovely story about two people who are meant to be together for many reasons. They come through some very hard challenges. Their romance and happy ending are heartwarming. An interesting and enjoyable addition to the Willowbrook series.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
This book is part of a series but doesn't draw in other character's so can easily be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed the story which for a change contains no peers at all and is just about a doctor and a midwife that care about their patients and are perfect for each other. The only angst is if James the Doctor would be better off working in London. It was great to revisit Willowbrook and I look forward to more books set here. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4.5 Stars
Dr. James Edwards is a talented doctor but isn't happy in London so he goes to Willowbrook. A growing village on the outskirts of London. There he meets Jenny Dawson the local herbalist/midwife & they clash horns.
This is the third book in the series but is very easily read as a standalone book. I loved both James & Jenny, both intelligent, caring & dedicated but James starts by feeling that doctoring is a man’s job & he's very sceptical of Jenny's talents. However he's attracted to Jenny & opens his mind to her remedies & begins to see first hand that she treats the patient not just the ailment. I loved how their relationship flourished over several months, there’s a typhoid outbreak where their feelings come to a head but will James leave to become a surgeon? A well written, well paced book with strong characters & not a nobleman in sight. I loved their journey to a HEA & the lovely epilogue rounded off the story beautifully
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Jenny is one of a multi-generational family of healers in a small town. She has books and recipes, caring for all the residents, delivering babies, and supporting families. James is the new surgeon and physician in town. Although he is highly skilled, he does not have an open mind to Jenny’s work and dedication to her craft. They are falling in love but cannot reconcile their feelings with their life’s calling to heal others in their own way. Jenny wants respect and James has to come to that realization before any relationship can work.
A sweet romance with character development and interactions.
Good story and character development was great too! It did take a few chapters for me to start getting into the story but a good read nonetheless.
