Magic Tides
I forgot how much I have LOVED this series!
More than that, it was wonderful to get the opportunity to jump back into the world of Kate and Curran! (And to see their son Conlan….even better!)
This is a short story that hopefully is going to be the beginning of a new series with the Daniels/Lennart family as they have moved away from Atlanta to Wilmington and have decided to keep a low profile. Unfortunately, that is going to be harder than anyone expected. Conlan is now 8 years old and brings a situation to his mom. The brother of one of his friends has been kidnapped and that is all Kate has to hear before she agrees to help.
And as usual, nope, it can't just be a normal kidnapping. Nope, there are gangs, shifters, The People (and vampires) and even gods involved.
Just another day in the life......
Loved, loved, loved it :)
Magic Claims
This is the second book in the continuation of the Kate Daniels series. Well, I guess that's what you call it. Kate and Curran have left Atlanta, given up the Pack, left everyone behind to move to Wilmington for what is hopefully a safe life.....
Yeah.......anyone could see that was probably not in the cards....
So, both Kate and Curran have been slowly realizing that they are going to have to make some changes. The Pack is falling apart in Atlanta and it is only a matter of time until they get members coming to them for sanctuary. Kate's aunt has warned her that they are going to need to build up their defenses, have the money and resources to fight when - not if - they get attacked. Whether it is for power, notoriety, or just because, they will be attacked.
This is the beginning of that plan, being forced into motion.
There is something evil in the woods not too far from their fort. They are asked to help rid the evil and in reward, they are being gifted thousands of acres of beautiful forest. Acres that they can use to build a Keep, to build a place that is defensible. They only need to survive the very Old Evil in the woods.
Yep, another fantastic story. I LOVE this series. I loved listening to the dual narration that now gives us both the female (Kate) and male (Curran) voice overs.
I'm definitely on board for wherever this story is going.
I CAN NOT WAIT.......
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read/listen to and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

This year Ilona Andrews has graced us with two (2!) new Kate Daniels books. The two novellas have been gathered into a 2 audiobook collection. Hillary Huber does the bulk of the narration with Michael Glenn narrating Curran’s point of view chapters. I’ve been reading the Kate Daniels books for more than a decade, but this is the first time I’ve listened to a Kate Daniels audiobook. It took me a while to warm up to Huber’s voice. I don’t love her style, but it’s fine. Once I got used to it, it didn’t detract from the story. Michael Glenn has a deep, rich voice, as one would expect from Curran. I think my biggest issues with Huber are that she occasionally sounds like a tiktok auto narration voice, and that she doesn’t quite vibe with the Kate voice in my head. I did love listening to the stories and once the story got going, so did she.
The novellas, Magic Tides and Magic Claims, give us Kate, Curran, and their son Conlan starting fresh-ish in Wilmington, North Carolina. While they can mostly leave the politics of Atlanta behind, they are too powerful to truly be low key. Curran’s love of fortresses and Kate’s ability to explode things with power words make low key a fantasy.
The one thing that bothers me, and has bothered me for quite a while, is the direction they’ve gone with Jim and Dali. Jim is the one of a very few major Black character in the Kate Daniels world. So his move from friend to almost antagonist makes me uncomfortable. I don’t have a prescription for what they need to do to fix it, but I’m going on record to say that I’ve been uncomfortable with this since at least Magic Triumphs.
Magic Claims sets up some interesting directions for future stories to go. With low key going out the door before we hit the middle of Magic Tides, Kate and Curran reassess their goals and for the first time, embrace who they are in a more wholistic way.
I received this as an advance listener copy from Dreamscape Media and NetGalley. My opinions are my own, freely and honestly given.

Many thanks to Net Galley and Dreamscape Media for an audio copy of Magic Tides.
This is a branch of from the Kate Daniels series where Kate and her husband and son move from Atlanta to Wilmington. This book is full of monsters and magic. So good!

Magic Tides and Magic Claims is a new duology in the Kate Daniels world.
Kate and Curran have left Atlanta and moved to Wilmington to start fresh, lay low and raise their son. Yeah, right 😂. Kate is fundamentally incapable of not getting involved when someone is mistreated and here she does again. Both stories are full of action, banter and interesting magic.
I would definitely recommend starting at the beginning with Magic Bites but if you’ve read the earlier series and Magic Tides, this book is a really fun return to this world and these characters.
It was fun to see the relationship between Kate and Curran and the plots of both books are exciting page turners with excellent new characters- both allies and adversaries. The narrators are also excellent and do a great job of meshing the Kate and Curran chapters.
Highly recommended!
Thank you to NetGalley, Ilona Andrews, and Dreamscape Media for the audiobook. I am voluntarily providing an honest review.
