This book is magical.
Beautifully written magical realism novel about dealing with grief and loss, finding a way through and embracing change. If you are a fan of Sarah Addison Allen, you would like this book. It's southern, magical, close ties to friends. This story was about letting go of the past, acceptance, taking that chance and discovering that sometimes dreams can come true. I particularly loved that little plot twist at the end.
Now if we are lucky, next summer there be another book with hints of a new character in the last few pages. I can't wait.
Thank you, NetGalley, for an audio-ARC of At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities by Heather Webber.
A sweet story of two women joined together through magical circumstance. Both searching for something and needing each other without knowing why. Webber creates characters that the reader roots for and understands. Although predictable, this book is easy to read and recommend.
Many thanks to my friends at @forgereads and @macmillan.audio for the #gifted copies of this book.
It’s rainy and dreary here today. Fall has definitely arrived. This is the kind of day that I want a snuggly blanket and a magical read. Queue any and all books by Heather Webber, to include this most recent release.
Heartwarming and utterly enchanting.
Webber excels at creating the perfect small town atmosphere overflowing with charm. The front porch swings. The nosey neighbors. The coffee shop steeped in “well-meaning” gossip.
Add to that a few slow strolls in the sand, and I was almost ready to pack up my Ohio home to head to Driftwood.
This story follows Ava and Maggie, both bold characters wrestling with the past. With a depth of characterization, it was easy to feel for both and cheer along their personal growth journeys.
At its core, this is a story about grief and acceptance. It’s teeming with emotion and easily relatable with important reminders.
But it’s the strands of magical realism thread throughout the story, full of warmth and whimsy, that really make this story shine.
Once again, I was swept away by the magic in Webber’s writing. Her books always feel like a warm hug for my soul, and this one was just the comfort read I was needing.
🎧 The narration by Hallie Ricardo and Stephanie Willis (and their perfect southern accents) made both characters come alive in a rich way that added charm of this read.
I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook version. The story was cute and I enjoyed the different perspectives of the two main characters. The town sounds like a place I’d love to live! I would definitely recommend this book to others.
This book was super cute. I loved how it was written and all of the little details. I loved how heartwarming the story is and that it was based in a small town.
I had the pleasure of reading this book while on a small solo retreat. It was exactly what I needed - at times magical and always cozy. A great book to enjoy when you just want a good, entertaining read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After the tragic death of her ex-boyfriend, Alex, Ava Harrison applies for a job that mysteriously appears in her mail, thinking that it was magically sent by him, since he was always trying to get her to take chances. And this, this moving to an Alabama coastal community called Driftwood far from home, security, is a big risk. But maybe it’s time. She heads to Driftwood from Ohio, wearing her lucky tweed blazer in boiling heat hoping to get a job as caretaker to a peculiar old man.
Meanwhile Maggie Brightwell is at a crossroads. Her father, (the above peculiar old man) says that he’s being haunted and is doing unusual things, like sleepwalking in his underwear, and now there’s talk that he’s going to sell the coffee shop, her coffee chop, her lost mother’s beloved coffee shop. Not to mention that Donavan, her best friend and perhaps love of her life, is back. There’s no turning back but going forward also feels impossible.
Joy, joy, joy, and happiness. We can’t get enough of these in our lives but fortunately Heather Webber’s And At the Coffeeshop of Curiosities can provide some.
First off, this isn’t small town fiction but rather magical town fiction. Driftwood is a town of heart, where people actively support each other, or try to.
Ava definitely ranks in the top ten of my favorite characters of the year (maybe ever? don’t know). She embraces her new life with, and here’s that word again, heart. But she is also quirky and sassy when she needs to be, with a gentle sense-of-humor. She takes this opportunity provided to her and holds onto it and goes beyond.
Maggie is a likeable character but in a different way. Maybe she’s more real with character flaws worn bravely. Her crossroads, entailing admitting what she has never wanted to, evoked sadness at resolutions.
While there is romance, readers looking strictly for romance (and sex) will be disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a book that makes you happy by showing how people can be, that has magic woven through almost every word, then this is the book for you.
I enjoyed both narrators as they brought the story to life with vivacity but also sweet soberness when the situation called for it. And, since they read the book to me, they were probably responsible as well as the author for the amount of heart resonating.
Many thanks to Macmillan Audio for providing me with a copy.
Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a moody and magical book set in a small Alabama town. Ava, a woman who feels responsible for her ex-boyfriend's death, finds a job in the town but finds it unsatisfactory. Maggie, the owner of the coffee shop, is in purgatory and her father wants to sell it to shake things up. The story is a mix of emotions, with the narrator attempting to bring some youth to the characters. The book was praised for its moody and small town magic, but the story didn't fully engage the reader to the point of not being able to put it down.
Thank you to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio and Tor Books for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Such a sweet read, totally enjoyed this book. I have loved every book by this author.
What's not to love about a coffee shop
With so many memories and more.
Once you pick up this book we'll the story just draws you in. The characters are absolutely fabulous. It's like being in the story.
So grab a cup of coffee or your favorite hot beverage. And enjoy.
Heather Webber knocked it out of the park with At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities!! Over the past couple of years, I’ve fallen in love with her style of writing and her mystical tales. Ava’s adventure begins with the loss of an ex-boyfriend. This little town is FULL of neat (that sounds sooooo old fashioned lol) people. I think my favorite is Estrelle and Norman 😉 The world of Driftwood is beginning to right itself once Ava arrives and the residents begin to open themselves up to the possibility of a little change. I’m a sucker for books like this – and was NOT disappointed in Ms. Webber’s latest book. Stephanie Willis and Hallie Ricardo narrated this fabulous book and did an amazing job! I was given an audio advanced listeners copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Heather Webber and MacMillan Audio,
This was fine, I'm just really confirming that magical realism isn't for me! The characters and the setting felt like a warm hug on a cool spring day.
This is such a sweet, cozy, and heartwarming read. I did not think I would enjoy this book at first because it starts out kind of slow. However, the deeper we got and the more we get to know the characters the more I wanted to cozy up and keep reading. This book reminds me of that feeling you get when you are under your favorite fluffy blanket, in front of a crackling fire, drinking a hot cup of tea, all snuggled up reading your favorite book. There may be a fluffy dog or cat in there as well.
We have two main characters Ava and Maggie. Maggie is the mother of a college age young man who raised her son by herself. Her mom disappeared in a rip tide when she was young and Maggie has never gotten over it. Maggie has the same "gift" that her mother has. Matching people to objects or curiosities that will spark their souls. Maggie's dad is acting strange and Maggie is trying to deal with her everyday life and never truly living for herself.
Then we have Ava, Ava is a young woman who's boyfriend died tragically and she blames herself. She thinks he sent her a message beyond the grave to break out of her shell and move from Ohio to Alabama. She has spent her life not really living because of her health condition that has gone in remission.
These two woman are both on a journey to find themselves, though in two different times in their lives. They have lived their lives in a way they thought they were expected, or lived in fear and this small town and some of that small town magic, helps push these woman to find themselves and a little love as well. Also, there is an adorable dog and a grumpy old cat.
As for the narration, I love the narrators, they did a fantastic job bring each of the MC's to life. This whole journey just leaves you feeling warm and cozy inside. It opens your eyes to not take for granted the time we have on this planet, because it is short. Also, the possibilities of a little bit of magic in the air!
At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities is the first Heather Webber book I’ve read. It oozes warmth, comfort, and coziness with the small town setting. The middle of the book was a little slow but the story of the two main characters was enough for me to continue. I also wasn’t a fan of one of the plot twists involving Ava towards the end but some might like the twist. I also wanted a little more magical realism. Overall, it was a solid and cozy read and perfect for this fall.
The audiobook was great narration and highly recommend the audio version. Many thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this ALC!
At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities is my first read by author Heather Webber and it won't be my last. Magical realism is a hit or miss genre for me, but the way Webber was able to masterfully intertwine the characters together and develop such depth in each story kept me hooked from start to finish. I also felt the rotating points of view were also written well and I liked that each POV picked up or started fresh with no rehashing.
Overall I throughout enjoyed the story and wouldn't mind a sequel...which I won't write out because I don't want to spoil anything but Webber will know what I mean.
At The Coffee Shop of Curiosities by Heather Webber is an enchanting story of a woman named Ava who moves to the of Driftwood, Alabama for a mysterious new job. In this town she meets people with whom love and accept Ava for who she truly is. The town is full of quirks and personalities to go with it. In this town, she finds herself and learns to accept herself for who she is. This charming little town accepts her and helps her become the beautiful special butterfly that she is. This is a lovely lighthearted story that kept you smiling at every corner. The characters are very well developed and described in a manor that it allows you to visualize them. The audio for this book is so fitting for the tone and townspeople of Driftwood. Great read and would highly recommend for someone looking for a lighthearted enchanting book about self discovery and magic. Special thank you to Netgalley and macmillion audio for this great read and opportunity.
This book was just so good. It was cozy and magical. I pulled into the story from the very beginning. I loved teh small community feel. It was told from different points of view making the story so enjoyable. There were some laughs and tears in this one. The audio was wonderful. I cannot wait to read more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Let me start by stating that I love Heather Webber. Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is one of my all-time favorite books. She follows a formula (a small town, Southern hospitality, women looking to find their place and way in the world, a love story, and a little bit of magic) that I find comforting. That remains here with At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities.
I was intrigued by the premise, but unfortunately, I never connected with the characters. I also found the pacing to be off. I was invested at the beginning and the end, but struggled through the middle.
I do think so many people will enjoy this. Especially, if you are a fan of magical realism and small-town settings.
I listened via the audiobook and thought both narrators did a fantastic job. My only issue was that the narrators sounded alike, and sometimes I forgot whose POV I was in.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
“If you continue to let yourself be haunted by your past, if you continue to allow fear to run your life, you will never have the future you yearn for, the happiness you’ve dreamed of. You must make peace with your past in order to move forward. Stop hiding from your pain. The only way out is through.”
I never thought I would be a fan of magical realism. Heather Webber is changing that. I really enjoyed her book Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe. Recently, I was given the opportunity to read and review her newest book At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities.
The small town setting and charming cast of characters make these books a warm and cozy read. I’ve pulled fabulous quotes from both of these books.
At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities is the perfect cozy story for fall. It is a story of healing and found family. I definitely recommend it!
A huge thanks to #netgalley and #macmillanaudio for a copy of the audiobook/ebook for me to review. I also want to send a huge thanks to #torpublishing for the physical copy to help me with my review. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
The audiobook narration was fantastic!
At The Coffee Shop of Curiosities
This book was very calm and low-stakes, and it was exactly what I needed this week.
Ava was looking for something different in her life when she receives a letter telling her to go to Alabama. There she meets Maggie who works/owns magpies Cafe.
They become fast friends given weird circumstances. The characters were well-crafted with backstories outside of the breadth of the novel. I love how this author is able to weave some magic into her stories.
At The Coffee Shop of Curiosities is a magical, mostly light-hearted read.
Ava is in the midst of grief, trying to figure out her next step, when she receives a letter directing her to go to Driftwood, Alabama.
Maggie, the daughter of Desi, works at Magpie’s, the coffee shop in Driftwood. Maggie, also in the midst of her own grief, is determined to help her dad, who she believes may be sick.
Ava takes a job looking after Maggie’s dad and a job at Magpie’s. As a caregiver to Desi, Ava takes up residence in his home.
A mysterious lady, Estrelle, visits the coffee shop frequently and seems to put the residents of Driftwood on edge.
Maggie has a corner in her shop where she keeps “curiosities” (random treasures), and she give the unique items to the residents when she feels led.
Ava feels at home in Driftwood and begins to let go of her past and embrace her future with Sam, a mysterious man, who is also dealing with his own grief (all this mention of grief, and I called it light-hearted, ha!).
Maggie is trying to help her dad, deal with Magpie’s, and come to terms with the past and what is happening the in present.
The two ladies form a bond that only grows stronger as the past is revealed. Ava helps Maggie deal with her father’s transitions as the magical story unfolds.
This story is sweet and whimsical. A feel-good, magical read.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book. My honest thoughts and opinions are my own.
