Kelley Armstrong does it again. Another mystery for Casey and Dalton to solve. I enjoyed getting another glimpse into Haven's Rock and I am already looking forward to the next case. Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur Books for my advanced copy.
I am so glad that this series has continued. I love that Casey and Eric and a few of the gang from Rockton have carried on with a new town, Haven’s Rock. One thing they have changed is that children and families are let in. This story centers around one such family, and the young boy who is in the very wrong place in a very bad time.
Great mystery, great characters, I recommend this highly.
Well-written book that is the second in the series. It is filled with suspense and mystery. I would read the first one too.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. I have read all the books in this spinoff as well as the original series (nine novels plus a novella in total). As someone who doesn’t love cold climates or wintery weather, I don’t normally gravitate to stories set in this sort of environment. But what can I say … the Rockton/Haven’s Rock series captured my attention in a way I never expected. This book is a great addition to the series and I would recommend it to any fans.
The Boy Who Cried Bear by Kelley Armstrong is an entertaining, action packed read. A wilderness adventure set in a small rural community that includes a group of unique characters. There are multiple mysteries with numerous twists and turns. Very good addition to the series.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
I loved it! This is my favorite series! I wish I could read about Detective Casey and Dalton and everyone else in the new Roc every day. The way they track through the forest and work through an investigation is fascinating. Casey is especially perceptive to personality flaws and faults in people and seeing their true nature. She's amazing. Excellent author.

Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Small Town, Yukon Territory
This is the second in the book series. The town of Haven’s Rock is completed and residents are arriving. The latest arrivals are a family with a single mother, and two boys. They were in witness protection but were found and the husband was killed. The mother was also injured in the event. Her youngest son, Max, loves the outdoors. Sheriff Eric Dalton is teaching him about the wilderness, how to track and how to listen. Max is out on a group hike in the woods when he thinks he saw a bear. At second glance, he said it had human eyes. When it spots is again, he goes into the woods looking for it but does not come back out. Sheriff Dalton and his detective wife, Casey Butler must use all their skills to find the missing ten year old.
The book has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in first person point of view from Casey and Max. The writing is descriptive and I felt as if I was there in the Yukon with the residents. If you like small rural communities with mysteries, you will probably enjoy this book.
Well now I'm mad!! How can I possibly wait for the next Haven Rock book?? The Boy Who Cried Bear was such an intense read that I was unprepared when I finished the book. The story of Casey and Dalton is becoming my favorite part of these books. When the Rock Harbor series ended I was so relieved that Kelley Armstrong wasn't ready to let these characters go either. In my opinion, Haven Rock is the story of Casey and Dalton. They take us on their cases and give us details so we can help solve whatever mystery that are faced with. But those mysteries just give us an opportunity to want to know more about this couple. Like I said, the intensity of this book made it hard for me to put down. Mainly because I wanted to see how they solved the case. The clues, the way Casey could communicate with Dalton by just a glance and the final realization of what really happened makes The Boy Who Cried Bear my favorite Kelley Armstrong book....so far.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
The Boy Who Cried Bear is the latest Haven’s Rock Novel which is a spin-off series from the Rockton series. Reading the Rockton series is probably not a necessity but I would recommend starting the Haven’s Rock series by reading it in order. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton run the town of Haven’s Rock in the Yukon wilderness full of citizens that needed to disappear from their lives for one reason or another. So it falls to Casey and Eric to investigate a bear sighting from a young resident to determine if the bear poses a risk to the town. The young boy goes missing in the woods and it quickly becomes apparent that there’s more than a bear in the wilderness. A missing construction worker in the neighboring community leads to a dead body and chase to catch an all too human predator. An action packed read that proves impossible to put down, The Boy Who Cried Bear leaves you addicted and wanting more. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
This was an advanced reader copy of this book. This is no way influenced my review. This book continues the story in Murder in Haven Rock which I highly enjoyed.
I find myself right in the midst of the characters in this book. Lots of twists and turns and things I did not expect. I hope there is another book that follows this one. I find myself enthralled with the people remaining in the town and can't wait to see how things turn out for all of them.
I've been following this series since the beginning, it's one of my favorites. This one was a good read with my favorite characters returning but felt a little different. There is another perspective we're hearing from and I felt like it took me out of the story a bit. Still enjoyable just not what I'm used to or was expecting.
I love Haven's Rock (and Rockton) because of the unique setting, but I was worried that I would lose interest in it after a while. "The Boy Who Cried Bear" really brings back the spark of the earlier books and feels like, even though it's the 10th book following these characters, it could start taking us in new directions. This book makes me excited the continue the new series.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of The Boy Who Cried Bear by Kelley Armstrong in exchange for an honest review. This book is the second book of the Haven's Rock series, the spinoff of the Rockton series. I love what Casey and Eric are doing with their new town and how much they have changed their town from Rockton. In this book a boy gets kidnapped while Casey is facing her own challenges. We get to know new characters and learn more about the neighbors at the mining site. This book also brings up a whole lot of questions, setting up for the next book. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for more from my favorite author.
4.5 stars
The gang’s back together again! Haven Rock’s youngest new resident goes missing under weird circumstances so it’s Detective Casey and Sheriff Eric (and Storm) to the rescue again! Was the culprit a town resident, one of the workers from the neighboring mining operation, or even a hostile/wildling from the former Rockton? Lots of twists and turns from beginning to end! My only complaint about this new spin off series is that we don’t see as much of the old gang with all the new residents. That being said, there were some high drama events in this book so it’s definitely not to be missed!
*Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the advance review copy
Fans of the Rockton series will enjoy this continuation in the new community of Havens Rock. New readers can enjoy it too, as enough info is given to make the reader feel invested in the community and it's residents. It's the second in the spin off series, and I haven't yet read the first (but I will!). This is a new wilderness adventure, with familiar and unfamiliar characters, and as usual the writing is very good, the story entertaining. Kelley Armstrong is an amazing author, no matter the genre. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a review copy. The opinions are my own.
The second book in the Haven's Rock series is a winner! With a nicely paced plot, interesting characters, and a smart storyline, we learn more about Casey, Eric, Yolanda, and a number of other characters. When Max, a new resident of Haven's Rock sees a "bear man" stalking his group while on a hike, walking on two legs, and with human eyes, many doubt him. But when Max goes missing, Casey and Eric have to race to find him, as well as figure out if this bear man is involved with his disappearance. All while they are trying to balance keeping Haven's Rock working, and worrying about the presence of the mining camp nearby.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the ARC, I can't wait for the next installment!
First of all, I have to thank the publishers for the advanced copy of “The Boy Who. Cried Bear.” As the next entry into the Haven’s Rock series, we once again get the opportunity to be a part of Casey and Dalton’s lives as yet another mystery enters the small community of Haven’s Rock. This time, it involves a 1pm year old boy, Max, who is there along with his mother and older brother. Max reports that he saw a bear with human eyes in the woods and after his brother makes fun of him, Max disappears. The new residents of Haven’s Rock have their own secrets they want to keep and cast blame without any evidence. Meanwhile, Casey has her own secret she is keeping. While Dalton and Casey take center stage, the other members of this society that we have come to count on take a back seat. This was the only serious complaint I have. Like all of the Rockton books, this one ties up some loose ends while opening up so many more. It just makes me that much more anxious to read the next book in the series that can’t come soon enough. Well done!
I love everything Kelley Armstrong writes and this did not disappoint. If you’re a fan of the Rockton novels you’ll love this series. This is the second in the series, and I recommend starting with the first. Great pacing and great characters.
This is a very good story, the second in the Haven's Rock series, which is a spin off from the Rockton series, which is also a very good series. Casey and her hubby Eric had moved from Rockton to a new area of the Yukon after it was decided by the controllers of Rockton to shut down the town, with the help of a philanthropist they founded Haven's Rock, similar to Rockton, but different. The people that populate it are screened prior to being allowed to move to this very remote place. One of the new people is a woman with her two sons, the woman, Dana, is recovering from being shot during a home break-in, her husband was killed and her two sons traumatized. One of her sons, Max, thinks he sees a grizzly bear while out on a walk with several others, he reports it to the leader of the hike and Casey and Eric look but can find no bear, Max's brother makes fun of him and Max is embarrassed. Not long after, Max is out on his own and someone grabs him and takes him away. Casey and Eric and a number of town people search frantically without success. Things start to look grim for Max, but information comes to light that points to a very secret mine that borders on the town, the boss of the mine shares that one of his men had also seen a bear similar to what Max had seen. The pace of this book is very quick and things develop quickly, one of the character arcs involves Casey thinking she may be pregnant, Overall a very good book and I would highly recommend. Thanks to #Netgalley and #St Martins Press for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed The Boy Who Cried Bear! It’s the second book in the Haven’s Rock series which is itself a spin off the Rockton series. I’m a huge fan of the original series and after reading this second installment I’m sure I’m going to be a fan of this series too.
I loved the pacing of The Boy Who Cried Bear. Perfect amount of action as well as time for important conversations between our main characters. The mystery and the personal situation of the main characters truly had me hooked really early on and I could not put the book down until I knew what was happening.
It’s also just so great to see these characters I know and love again in general, so if you were a fan of them from the previous books you won’t be disappointed in that regard. Something I found interesting is that I was a little sad one of my favorite secondary characters from the original series didn’t get much page time, but I ended up not minding because of how much I enjoyed a new secondary character from this series. It’s part of what I like about this book. Overall it is a good balance of still connecting to the previous series I love while moving on to new stories and characters.
I devoured the last thirty percent of this book and I cannot wait to read the third installment of Haven’s Rock when it comes out. I was honestly left wanting more. I really think this book did an excellent job showing readers how things are going in this new town, telling an engrossing mystery, giving genuine and human moments to great characters, and setting up some really exciting plot lines to come.
