Nothing beats a fab feel good Christmas story. The setting was great made me want to go to Cornwall! Reading it all cosy when its freezing outside. Made me feel festive!
Thank you NetGalley, Linn B. Halton and Aria & Aries for the copy of
A Cornish Christmas at the Farmhouse Bakery. This is my personal review.
Ivy and Adam have the business they love but when the landlord steps in their dreams fall apart. Ivy’s friend Jess says they should move to Cornwall.
Jess has a shop that Ivy can start up her own shop and to make things even better there is a cottage that Ivy and Adam can live in.
The story was easy to follow but at times there was a lot that could have been left out and the book for me would have a better flow to it.
A delightful cozy, Christmas book which are quickly becoming a must read for me in fall! The setting of this book in Cornwall was perfect and seeing Adam and Ivy's story unfold was wonderful.
A feel good Christmas story. About life love starting life again. Adult decisions and family. It's a good festive read.
What a lovely charming read this was.
Ivy and Adam are facing an uncertain future in Stroud, it is a struggle to decide which way to go. Is it worth leaving close family and friends for a new start elsewhere? There are so many “what ifs..”.
This book is obviously part of a series, I fully intend to look up the others as I enjoyed this one so much.
Lovers of Jessica Redland, Erica James, and Katie Fforde will enjoy this charming read.
Highly recommended.
Renweneth Farm wasn't in Ivy and Adam's plans but here they are after a rotten landlord tanked Ivy's business and Adam has had trouble settling into something, They alternate telling this story of community and Christmas set in Cornwall. Not everyone's happy to welcome Ivy's new baking business or her taking over the village Christmas celebration at first but then....Oh the descriptions of the treats! Thanks to netgalley for the ARC, You might recognize some of the themes and the characters might be a tad trope-y but it's a heart warmer.
The book is written in a conversation style, with the action in past tense, as characters tell each other what they have done to move the story along. Chunks of time go by, and no action is described, only dialogue about what they did. There is a distinct lack of imagery. I did not have a sense of what places looked like to the author. Although there were minimal descriptions here and there, the overall impression was very vague. I do not care for novels that only ‘tell’ and do not ‘show’. The characters seemed flat, and spoke often in platitudes which made the dialogue seem forced. The novel is supposedly a Christmas story, but this was such a small part of the story, only really occurring in the last 10% of the novel. It could have been set in any season, and I didn’t get a festive feel from the majority of the book. Even the Christmas Market, which could have been joyous in descriptions and action, was glossed over with the characters again just talking about how lovely it looked. Not my style of book, but this author has written many so might be enjoyed by others.
I love a Christmas read and this one did not fail me. Curl up with a cuppa and read and fall into the farmhouse bakery world.
I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read and review an advanced copy of this book.
Ivy (a cafe/bakery owner) and her husband Adam (a self-employed construction worker) have come face-to-face with one of those life major roadblocks. Which detour they take will require major life-altering changes. One opportunity for Ivy requires relocation, and Adam’s new job will require him to be gone for long stretches of time.
This is truly a Christmas, feel-good, story that shows how friendships, hard-work, and perseverance can take a bad situation and make it a good experience.
Absolutely lovely story of Adam & Ivy's journey I felt part of the story and felt myself willing the couple on as they struggled Ivy with her bakery and Adam doing odd jobs as a builder and jealousy in the community.
This is the 2nd book and a good follow on that is compelling and gets you engrossed to what the future holds.
Could not put it down and the descriptions of the farmhouse and its scenery were great.
Thanks to NetGalley & Aria & Aries, for the ARC for a honest review.
Christmas and Baking. Two of my favourite things and that is why I requested this book. And what a charming book it is. So easy to read and a book that warms you up on any cold day or night.
This a a cosy read that is heart-warming, fun, Christmassy and with a great setting and great characters. Loved Adam and Ivy but need to go back and find book one as I didn't realise it was part of a series.
A quick and easy read for me and one I thoroughly enjoyed and felt relaxed and happy while reading it. .
Thank you NetGalley and Aria & Aries for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of A Cornish Christmas at the Farmhouse Bakery by Linn B. Halton on Netgalley.
It's a really enjoyable read, and even rhough I haven't read the first in the series it was no problem to quickly get into the story. You get hints about a previous book every so often, but it works well on it's own.
Having a married couple as the main characters was a definite plus for me, instead of all the drama being around stupid misunderstandings or such to create the tension for the book, hee we have a stady and strong couple. The hook of the book is all about the tough decuisions of choosing your dreams, or rather going with the save option.
The cast was lovely, and I was very happy to spend my time with these close knit people who are always happy to lend a hand and help out. It definitely got me in the Christmas spirit, and the ralk about all teh christmas cakes had my mouth watering!
I also adored how both the bakery and the whole farm are trying to go a healthier and more local way. With real ingredients and employees that are already close at hand. It added more depth and feeling to the story, and yet none of the characters was ever pushy about it, so it didn't feel like they tried to force anyone into their way of life.
Even though I enjoyed teh book a lot, I'll end up with 4 stars, as a few times the book felt a bit preachy about life, as in it didn't feel like authentic character dialogue a few times, especially in teh end, but rather like the author lecturing me about how precious life is. The story managed to show this perfectly all on it's own, which made this extra emphasis stick out even more. There's also one big drama moment added, probably to raise the stakes and have one "heart racing" moment, but again it didn't seem to fit perfectly with thebook, and I would have enjoyed the story more if that bit was simply not there - and it wouldn't even have changed the story.
Outside of these two quibbles, this was a fantastic read with such a great setting, and so many baked goods I want to try right away, I wish I could just walk right into the farm!
Another excellent story set at Renwethen Farm. As Adam and Ivy face challenges in their work lives, Jess comes up with a great solution and everyone pitches in.
As always, Linn creates such a vivid world. Her descriptions of the farm and bakery made me feel like I was there and I couldn't wait to see how the story unfolded. I'm hoping there's another part in the series...
I look forward to Linn's writing with every release and I'm certain you'll love to dive deep into the wonderful Cornish scenery too.
Ivy and Adam seems to have their whole lives planned out. Ivy runs a pretty successful bakery. However that all came crashing down with her horrible landlord ruined her plans for expansion.
Luckily Ivys friend Jess offered her a space in one of the complexes she owns, and after a lot of hesitation she decided a to move to Cromwell.
Overall I loved the love that Ivy and Adam have with each other, however the story needed something more, it was very flat.. there wasn’t really any action mixed with very little drama, I was really bored. I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over again.
Such a heart warming book. I had read the first book and loved it and was great to read another with the same characters and see where their story would take them.
Hoping for another one!
I got 40% through this and then gave up sadly. I was looking forward to this one and have enjoyed previous books by this author. I found zero Christmas cheer in the bit of the story I managed and just found that the book was dragging. Maybe if I’d have read the first book in the series I would have been a bit more invested. I also found that I was getting really irritated by the way the characters constantly stated the character they were speaking to’s names in pretty much every bit of dialogue! Such a small thing but once I noticed it it really annoyed me! It didn’t flow like a normal conversation would and I felt it affected the overall enjoyment of the story for me. Overall I found this just too slow for me. Maybe the last half of the book would have picked up pace but I just didn’t get that far sadly. Not for me.
You can't beat a good Christmas time novel, this was no exception! A great read to get you in the festive spirit, the plot is engaging and I got completely drawn in and engaged in the story.
Ivy and Adam have some big decisions to make as they find themselves out of work. Should ivy give up her dream and can Adam find a building firm with the same high standards as his own?.
Jess, ivy’s best friend from school has a solution, but is it the right one for them all?
This engaging and enjoyable story left me wanting more. It also has some interesting information about baking with healthy ingredients, something I would like to explore more.
An easy enjoyable read.
I loved this book.
I wanted to immediately move to Cornwall and somehow be part of what Jess and her family and friends are establishing. I felt excited for Ivy and Adam when they decide to make the move. The writing conveyed that it was hard work but enjoyable at the same time. It shows the difference that community and enlisting the support of locals can make when starting a new venture.
I didn't read this at Christmas, but that didn't matter. It helped me to begin to anticipate the festive season.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC to review. Opinions are my own.
This is the second book in the Cornish Farmhouse trilogy. This time round we see Ivy and Adam facing new challenges. Can the suggestion from Ivy's best friend Jess, to open a bakery at Renweneth Farm, be the opportunity they need to reset their lives?
Wonderful descriptions (I could almost taste the bread and cakes!), heartwarming friendships, and a cosy sense of community make this a lovely read. However, as in the first book, the author does overuse names in conversation and it still irritated me - you simply don't say someone's name in every line of speech!
