I liked this book but there were some things that are pet peeves of mine - one being when the characters make unrealistic choices such as staying in a room in the middle of nowhere with someone you've just met. It was a shorter book but unfortunately was a little slow so there wasn't as much content as I'd hope for with a shorter book. That being said, it did have good humor/banter, but overall wasn't my favorite read.
Unfortunately this one wasn't for me at all.
This is a short book with less than 300 pages but the pace was really slow so it felt much longer.
The plot and set up should have made for a steamy romance but I didn't feel this at all. Instead the characters were irritating and spent too much of the book changing their minds about each other.
The side characters in this book were just as annoying and frequently made decisions and actions that were completely out of character.
The Hotel Room Mix-Up
I did enjoy the premise of this story. And I did enjoy it. It wasn't my favorite read but it was good. Ella and Callum enter a journey together, after a hotel mix up. Both carry baggage with them. Forced together in a tiny cottage, can they learn to let go of the past together. There was some awkward moments in the writing and a little slow start. But once I got into the story, it did go quicker.
3/5 ⭐️
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for this ARC.
I feel like I need to preface this review by saying LADIES, do NOT stay in the middle of nowhere with a man you’ve JUST met, ESPECIALLY if they’re your only mode of transport.
With the comical amount of stuff going wrong this read like a Series of Unfortunate Events book and I had fun with it.
I am a fan of forced proximity tropes so I definitely enjoyed that aspect of it. I did have issues with the characters’ constant flip flopping but to be fair, with the amount of baggage they share it seems understandable to some extent. It is VERY hot and cold though so it might not be to everyone’s taste.
The MMC was definitely my favourite of the two but the FMC did have her moments.
All in all it is a well paced book, with something constantly going on - making it hard to put down cause you just want to see what else can possibly go wrong.
Also the FMC is basically just Nina Dobrev but with heterochromia, so I’ve ended up imaging the MMC as Ian Somerholder 😂
(The spice (and the dialogue during) was kinda awkwardly written.)
!!!!SPOILER!!!
Kinda weird that MMC getting married in the same just that the funeral for his first wife was held but 🫢
Unfortunately this book wasn’t my favourite read. I found it a bit slow to get into and as it’s only just over 250 pages I thought it would be a super quick read which I much prefer.
Although the writing style wasn’t my cup of tea I must say I did find the characters rather loveable and I enjoyed the slow burn romance throughout.
I would recommend giving it a read if maybe you’re wanting something short and sweet but that’s all I can offer for if.
Thank you to Kathy Jay & Harper Collins and Net Galley for this arc.
Sadly, I did not like this book. I really liked the premise, but the execution was unsuccessful, in my opinion. The writing at times was confusing, I sometimes didn't know who was talking, and some of the sentences were hard to understand. I didn't like either main character. They both gave me whiplash with them flip-flopping between liking each other and then not. I also never like the excuse that being bad at marriage is in a person's DNA, which the FMC would say on multiple occasions. Overall, this book wasn't for me, but if you enjoy insta-lust and forced proximity tropes, you could give this a try.
Thank you for the advanced copy of the Hotel Room Mix-Up, the synopsis of this book was really interesting but unfortunately the story fell a little flat for me. I really wanted to get behind the characters but I found them a bit shallow and frankly annoying.
Really enjoyed this adorable story set in England. The characters are relatable, funny, and endearing. Following their journey of discovering their true joy in life and meeting the most wonderful people along the way was great fun! This was an easy, truly enjoyable read! Highly recommend if you need a little escape into a sweet meet cute!
If you are looking for a book with lots of fun and drama, this is the book for you! There was never a dull moment with this book, which I loved. I was really in the mood for something more fast paced, so I was really glad I picked up this book. With the conflict between Ella and Callum, along with the drama with the side characters and the wedding, there was always something going on to hold my attention. This book was definitely more about the journey, which made for a fun read. The romance between Ella and Callum wasn't my favorite, but I did enjoy both of them as characters. Callum was my favorite, by far, and I really loved how deep and well-rounded he was as a character. He really flew off the page for me and felt like someone I could know in real life. Some of the conflicts between the two of them seemed a little forced, but it wasn't anything I couldn't look past.
Darling read! I had been in a slump for a bit and this light and sheer read was just the book to get me back into reading. I loved Ella and Callum are darling characters!
I was really routing for Ella and Callum. They both had so much to overcome from their own pasts and seeing them together was just delightful!
Fun story - a few more twists and turns than I expected. Easy to sink in to on an autumnal day and read it in one go!
This was a excellent ready by Kathy Jay. You will want to continue reading to find out what happens next! She keeps you intrigued that you can't stop reading.
I really did enjoy this story and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves reading happy every after stories.
The story is set in Cornwall where Ella and Callum where they have a chance meeting as they are both there for different weddings. They both have very different lives including attending 2 very different weddings with one having a theme you couldn’t have guessed. Will the weddings go ahead due to different reasons? Only one way to find out…..
While I had never heard of the author before I was looking forward to trying this book as it sounded interesting. I was disappointed as it was a lovely story and has a mix of different characters with different background stories. The author does include a resource page with some helpful websites in the UK as it does cover topics like bereavement, people been burn out and domestic violence.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Unfortunately this one wasn’t a winner for me. Both main characters are super annoying and their actions go beyond mere convenient romcom plot devices to pure insanity. They flip flop constantly and change their minds so rapidly you can’t believe they are even slightly realistic people.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The cover was adorable, and the description sounded fun, so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it really let me down.
Callum and Elle are honestly two of the most annoying characters I've read. The amount of times they go back and forth on should we or shouldn't we (sometimes multiple times in just the space of a few minutes) is incredibly frustrating. In every single scene together, they both flip flop on how they feel over and over again.
On the final day (not including the one year later scene), Elle pushes Callum to stay with her permanently, despite the fact that the night before they specifically agreed to one night only and the understanding that it wouldn't be a relationship. Instead, the first words out of her mouth are basically, I lied, I want a relationship. When he is surprised, she kicks him out. Then in the space of a few hours, Callum does a complete 180, decides not to move to China, decides he's in love with Elle and proposes???
The side characters were equally extreme - Saffie runs away the day of her wedding, distraught about her sister, but a two minute conversation later and she says she's over it and ready to move on. Elle's dad has been an absentee father her entire life, and then suddenly writes her a song, wants to spend time with her and sets up a trust fund for her. Drake is supposed to be this crazy actor who's rude to everyone, and suddenly he is the nicest person ever. Nothing about this book felt put together.
This was sweet but at times felt overly descriptive and flat - I didn't feel I gelled with the characters.
I went into this book thinking it’d be one of those light, air romance books with the usual forced proximity trope. However, this book surprised me! It took the forced proximity trope to a different level as well as had a lot more depth than a usual light romance. The characters had complex feelings and backgrounds — it definitely told a realistic story with realistic characters compared to the easy going, happy going characters and story that I’m used to with this trope.
I think this book could’ve had maybe one less “fallout”, but overall I liked it.
Forced proximity, found family, somewhat spicy.
Overall:
4 stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
When Ella arrives in Cornwall for a wedding, the last thing she expects is to find that her hotel room has been double booked. Forced to share a crumbling cottage with a complete stranger, it's her worst nightmare. But as the wedding draws closer she realises that she might have just fallen for him..
Callum is doing a good job of keeping everyone at arms length. He doesn't want to risk losing someone close to him again. But when he's forced to share a cottage with Ella he finds he's unable to resist her...
The result is two people who want to love each other but are afraid to. The setting in Cornwall is beautiful and the other characters are brilliant!
I was rooting for Callum and Ella to overcome their fears and their pasts to be together!
This was such a fun book. I really enjoyed it. Was a lovely read. Super easy flow and a good story. I loved the hotel room mix up it’s an different take on a sweet love story
