I’ve come across many picture books celebrating Indigenous and Native children, and a fair number which are specifically about multiracial kids, but I’d not heard of the Métis people before reading this release.

Just as the Métis people themselves are a blend of people and cultures, the children represented in this book covers an array of appearances, including a wide swath of skin tones. I also love to see a child with a cochlear implant, though I wish there had been more body differences among the kids.

While there is a fair bit of whitespace with no artwork (I’d guess about a sixth of the book), the artwork that is there is incredibly detailed. Hundreds of individual flowers, leaves, beads, and so forth. Right in the middle of the book is a stunning depiction of a child walking through a field of grass and blooming flowers, which is sure to delight the eyes of very young readers.

It should be noted that the artist is not Métis, and it is nowadays pretty rare for picture book collaborators to not be from the group they are depicting. The author, however, is, so the book isn’t out of nowhere.

A good library pick, and probably a must-have for those who are Métis, like the author.

I love learning and educating myself about cultures and people I did not know about. I love it when a picture book sparks that thirst to learn more. A good story of community, too.

This is so beautiful, not only the artwork style but the homage to the Metis. I did not know about the flower beadwork people, but now I will look for more to learn all I can. The book even includes at the end a recipe for a traditional dish, we learn new words and the art of this community. Very educational and enriching read. It also makes us want to share with each other, respect each other, and learn from our community and so many different experiences.
The artwork is so beautiful I want to frame some of the double pages with the images of the warm field.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for this e-arc.

I am always looking to add diversity into my library. I appreciated how this children’s book has many wonderful examples of how the Métis culture is shown and celebrated. It also allowed for children who have Métis heritage but that weren’t raised is in the culture to feel included and seen.

I absolutely loved this book! The illustrations are just gorgeous and the story is so informative and inspiring. I have family and friends who are Métis and I just know that this book is going to be a big hit because of how important and powerful its message is. The emphasis on joy and pride was simply amazing.
I can picture many teachers using this book to introduce students to Métis folks because it breaks down important elements of Métis life into very easy to understand terms.
I also think that this book could help explain the difference between being Métis and being mixed Indigenous in a more simplified and age appropriate way for younger students. The conflation between being Métis and mixed can be very harmful, so being able to teach the difference early may help with misunderstandings.
Overall, I loved this book for both its story and the pictures, and I really think it will be a beautiful addition to any library. It brings such important representation to our shelves. I highly recommend!

Beautiful celebration of culture and family and inclusion. While the speaker is Métis, this book resonates with anyone who has ties to their family that are unique and involve small traditions in food and dancing and sewing and making with loved ones (which, I believe is every family, my Norwegian certainly does). In poetry, they say that writing the very specific creates the universal, for we see ourselves in the concrete details of others. Here, in this lovely little book, I feel my grandmother, and my uncle, I feel my cousins and my teachers and my friends. As the story progresses more voices of support are included, making all readers involved in a way that is beautiful, where friendship is like family. In addition, the afterward is filled with good information on Métis people and language and where to continue to keep the stories alive and celebrated. The illustrations throughout are gorgeous and inviting as well. There is a sense that carries through the book of many rivers coming together, and the waters joining, and that we are those waters, our stories all building and growing and combining.

Métis Like Me is a charming book about people of Métis heritage. The author, Tasha Hilderman, is Métis. The story is accompanied by bright, happy illustrations by Risa Hugo, showing joyful children and cheerful families. The book's true beauty, though, lies in the telling of the many traditions of the Métis people. Each family has habits and ways of honoring their heritage, from music to clothing to cooking and embroidery. The point is made that not all Métis follow the ways of their heritage but are proud to be Métis nonetheless. This is a beautiful tribute to the Métis people and an educational book about an often-forgotten culture.

Métis Like Me written by Tasha Hillderman is a fantastic story for anyone wishing to learn more about Métis culture. In this story the character at the start talks about all the things they do (picking berries, playing fiddle, etc) that are related to culture which is starkly contrasted with the character at the end who reveals that they are unable to do any of those activities. The main message is that it is never too late to learn them which speaks to the resilience and strength that Indigenous people have shown after losing so much of their culture through colonization.

This is a great addition to any school library or classroom. It has vibrant illustrations and vivid colours which are sure to engage young readers. I also really liked the addition of the author's note and explanation of what Métis means as well as the glossary of words and bannock recipe at the end. As a teacher, myself, I am thinking about ways that I can include this book into my curriculum . Even though I teach older students, I still think that there is value for them.

Everyone should read this story - we don't have nearly enough Métis literature out there to build an awareness of the culture!

Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada, and Tundra Books for allowing me the opportunity to view a copy of this book via NetGalley..

Add this book by an indigenous author to your library's collection! An important and informative read.

Metis means mixed and in most of North America that means European/Indigenous family history. It also means strong, resilient, still here! Michif is only part of endangered endangered languages of North America that we must not allow to vanish along with the heritage and culture of The People.
At the end there is an author's note, a recipe for Bannock/Gaalet, and even a brief dictionary.
The illustrations by Rise Hugo are fun, complex, colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!

Thank you to NetGalley the Penguin Random House for the ARC. Métis Like Me is a great addition to a small, but growing field of books about Métis people. This book features several Métis children, each sharing one aspect of their culture, such as making bannock, beadwork, fishing, etc. Towards the end, we meet a child who doesn't know much about Métis history or culture but is reassured that it's never too late to learn! I like that it doesn't display Métis people as a monolith. I love the details in the illustrations. I'm happy to add this book to our library - we are in need of engaging books on Métis culture and heritage to build awareness.

This is a very sweet children's book about Metis culture and has beautiful illustrations to admire as you read. The unique and significant aspect of this book is that it shows that not all who are Metis know their culture and are able to celebrate it - but it demonstrates that it is never too late to start learning and that you are accepted into this culture all the same. This is a fantastic book that will signify to children that you can learn to be part of your culture and to accept others.

This is a celebration of the Metis culture and traditions - and a beautiful one at that. The author acknowledges that not all Metis are the same but they all share a connection to their ancestors, a connection that needs to be preserved and shared. The illustrations are colorful and give depth to the text - especially the silhouettes with traditional beadwork.

This book is a wonderful way to celebrate and learn about Métis culture. The text and illustration are perfectly paired and tell a beautiful story about all it means to be Métis. I especially adored the recipe at the end of the book, as well as the glossary. This is such a great book for classrooms and homes alike.

Thank you Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books, and NetGalley for the ARC.

Going into this book I didn’t even know what Métis meant. That’s why books like this truly matter. We got to understand a new word and what it means to the people who are Métis. Great story.

Fantastic book about community, culture, and heritage. Such a beautiful book! Love how everyone shares something different on each page, connecting to one another. Will make a perfect read-aloud for many ages. Also love that the child that does not know about their heritage is not shamed.

4.5+ stars

This is a great children’s book. It’s educational, focused on culture (both past and present), and it is inclusive of children/people who have been disconnected from their cultural backgrounds but who want to learn more. The illustrations are beautiful (and I love that the artist has the same first name/initials as me!) and help to tell the story. The recipe and vocabulary list at the end are nice touches as well. This would be a great book to buy for children or elementary teachers/librarians.

Métis Like Me is a celebration of, and invitation to, the Métis people. We learn about a few traditions of the Métis people, then we meet one little girl who doesn't feel the connection to her heritage, as she wasn't raised within that culture. The other Métis in her community invite her in to learn and experience their shared history. This is a beautifully illustrated book. It's wonderful for Métis children, both to see themselves represented in books and to be invited to learn more about their own heritage. It's also educational for everyone, and a wonderful introduction to a culture that many know too little about. Fantastic little book for kids in the home, the classroom, or the library!

Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
