I don't know if i am a huge fan of this series.. I did not love the voodoo stuff. It was a good story but I just don't think this series is for me. I enjoyed their relationship and I like that they built a strong foundation before moving into a relationship. I really wanted to love this series so much but it just didn't hit the way I wanted it to :(
Lotus and Kenan are so freaking cute together I can't even. Her journey to emotional recovery after her childhood trauma is so well written, and the slow burn romance they develop together is chef's kiss. Sprinkle in a little voodoo magic and you've got yourself one hell of a love story. This book as the ending to the Hoops trilogy was so bittersweet, as we saw Lotus & Kenan's heated interactions in the first two books and the cataclysmic passion we see in this book made it all worthwhile.
10/10 another Kennedy Ryan fave.
Thanks to Netgalley & Sourcebooks Bloom Books for the chance to read this one ahead of its re-release in exchange for an honest review.
Hook Shot is another book in the great Hoops series. Here we have Kenan a divorced basketball player who falls hard for Lotus a friend of Iris who is in a loving relationship with August another team mate of Kennan’s.
Both Kenan and Lotus fall hard for each other but both have had hard times. Lotus has had an horrific childhood and had to overcome the obstacles it has caused, Kenan has gone through a dreadful divorce which has seriously impacted his 14 year old daughters mental health. But despite this they both fall hard and are determined to heal themselves to be able to be together. It’s a minefield to go through and they have a long road ahead of them. But their chemistry and love is deep and we take this journey with them and watch them heal.
There is laughter, depth, pathos and excitement and some voodoo magic in this story that keeps those pages turning. A great and very enjoyable entertaining read that I throughly enjoyed.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
This was my first book by Kennedy Ryan and it make me one of her biggest fans. This book was fantastic. Lotus and Kenan were sweet and flawed and beautiful together. The character development was amazing. I loved how Lotus held onto her heritage and made it her own. She didn’t bend for anyone on her beliefs and she made magic happen. Lotus is a woman that so many can look up to. Kenan was sweet and loving and such an incredible father. He loved with his entire being and you could tell.
This book explored trauma and heart break in a way that didn’t feel traumatic, but felt healing. Many of the themes that were explored were so painful, but the release was cathartic. You don’t feel alone in your hurt when reading this book.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to read more by Kennedy Ryan!
Hook Shot follows the story of Kenan and Lotus. Kenan is a single, divorced dad who is a basketball star. Lotus is a young woman in the heart of New York's fashion scene. Lotus is not looking for love, in fact, she's taking a break from it. But then comes Kenan, in NY for the summer with his daughter. Just when Lotus is trying to avoid men, the most perfect man steps into her life. As much as she tries to avoid him, he will not give up on what he wants....and that's her. Will she give in?
What I liked: Everything. This book is masterfully written - to a point where I truly escaped into their world. The pacing, the conflict, the dialogue, the characters - all perfect. Their love story was honest, real, and heartfelt. The spicy scenes weren't just spicy. They were sensual. The characters had such chemistry and intimacy. I liked the way that the author weaved Lotus' past into the story. Just enough that we understood her, but not so much to detract from the story.
What I didn't like: That it was over. I didn't want it to end.
I cannot believe I've waited so long to read a book by Kennedy Ryan. It certainly won't be the last!
I’ve been excited to read Lotus and Kenan’s story since their first meeting in Long Shot and it did not disappoint. This was probably my favorite of the series!
I loved seeing the friendship bloom between these two as they took things slow. Lotus has a history of childhood sexual abuse and the care and tenderness with which that was treated was really moving. The scene where they make love for the first time was probably one of the most beautiful I’ve ever read.
Content flags: there is a chapter that details Lotus’ rape; there is also a suicide attempt by a teenager
Thank you to Kennedy Ryan and NetGalley for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review!
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Again - this book was so well written! She really knows how to hit emotional and deep topics the right way.
This was a very emotional and somewhat heartbreaking story. The hard issues are dealt with in a sensitive manner and respectfully. The main characters are developed and the secondary characters were also developed and supportive. Kenan melted my heart and Lotus broke it a bit. There is love, chemistry, joy, friendship, and a bit of mystery. The HEA was more than satisfying. I made sure to add more books by this author to my to read list.
I must admit this book was not quite what I was expecting but I was surprised it because it was so different from what I'm used to reading in the sport romances category. First, the relationship was so nicely built!! I loved it so much. Also the book was big enough which allowed the story to have room to develop. Not having that many sex scenes was a bonus as well. The reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is because sometimes I felt there was drama when there was no reason. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
*tw for rape and suicide attempt
Hook Shot by Kennedy Ryan, published by Sourcebooks, is book three in her Hoops Series. Every book in the series is about another couple and can easily be read as standalones.
The previous books are Long Shot and Block Shot.
Hook Shot tells Lotus and Kenan's heart wrenching story. I will not spoiler here, only so much, there are characters from previous books that appear and I loved it. Just like Lotus, she's Iris' cousin and they grew up together.
Lotus and Kenan know each other for years. They have strong chemistry and are drawn to each other, but never acted on it. Kenan's personal life is a mess and Lotus tends to stay away from relationships and messes. At first sight they have not much in common, but both carry a lot on their backs, have issues and scars, visible and invisible.
I couldn't wait to read this highly anticipated book - and I had high expectations. And what can I say, Hook Shot is better than I could have dreamed of. Kenan and Lotus' story remebered me a bit of Grip and Bristol and made me want to read their books again - as if I don't re-read them the whole time anyway.
OK , back to Hook Shot. Since Gus and Iris' book I wanted to know more about Lotus and now the author dekivered. Than you so much KR !! It's a raw and gritty story, a story that stays with you. I highly recommend the book and give 6 stars.
I love Kennedy Ryan & I love the Hoops series!
Single dad, divorced, basketball player. What more could you ask for in a book?!
I absolutely loved the story between Keenan and Lotus - I am so sad to be leaving this world!
Thankful for the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. Kennedy Ryan is seriously such a talented author. She tells romance stories in such an entertaining and way that keeps me on my seat. Definitely a great novel for romance sports fans!!
THIS. ONE. THIS. IS. THE. ONE.!!! seriously was hooked from the beginning. The characters are so low able and relatable. life is MESSY and you find a way through it w the small joys and slowly letting our walls down after trauma. Kennedy as always is a master storyteller but this one just pulled at ALL my heartstrings
Hook Shot by Kennedy Ryan is a captivating novel that encompasses all the essential elements of a remarkable romance. This book not only exudes an irresistible allure, but it also manages to maintain an air of sensuality even during moments of apparent tranquility. The palpable tension woven throughout the narrative is simply enthralling, and I must confess, I am utterly enamored by it. This enthralling tale had me eagerly flipping through the pages, often finding myself unable to resist the temptation to stay up late into the night, completely engrossed in its spellbinding world.
YES this was so well-written okay 😭 we have a very slow-burn relationship between two people who have past trauma and who are processing it, and the slow-burn and the conversations and the hea were so frickin good. This is Lotus's book (cousin of Iris from Long Shot) - Long Shot told us about the sexual abuse she went through as a kid, and this book takes us on the larger emotional journey she went/is going through, including her resurfaced trauma and the therapy / steps she takes to heal. I felt that this storyline was handled really well.
TWs - rape of a young girl by a man her mother's dating (and then later her mother chooses him and abandons her), panic attacks / PTSD from past sexual abuse, cheating (past), suicide attempt by a kid, divorce
-- ty to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy!
I love Kennedy Ryan’s Hoops Series and Hook Shot was one of my favourite reads of 2019 so I was excited to re read and take myself back into Kenan and Lotus’s world. I was not disappointed this book was everything I remembered and so much more. This very talented author has beautiful way with words she writes with compassion and stories that should leave you heartbroken give you strength through those words. I’m not sure I can ever do this book justice with mere words because how do write a review about characters who maybe imperfect but who’s story is perfection. I really don’t want to write a review that’s full of spoilers because I believe you need to read this first hand with no preconceived ideas about the story so I’m just going to tell you how this book made me feel.
I laughed and I cried and I was taken on Kenan and Lotus’s journey because this is not just a love story it’s two people coming to terms with their pasts and learning to trust with their futures. Your emotions will be all over the place but throughout this book there is hope and I really hope like me you will find strength in these beautifully written words. Hook Shot touched me on so many levels and I urge you all to join this couples journey with eyes seeing it for the first time or like me jumping back in and falling in love all over again.
TW: Childhood sex abuse (graphic), attempted suicide, parental abandonment
This wasn't my first Kennedy Ryan book but it has been a minute! I had forgotten there are a lot of traumas in her books that she likes for her MCs to overcome. So this is your warning there is a graphic child sex abuse occurrence and it was awful to read but it does make you understand the FMC more. Also there is a secondary character that attempts suicide, if you're at all triggered by these two topics please be safe and take care of yourself first and foremost. I believe Kennedy mentions which chapter to skip the whole scene just in case in the front of the book.
I really enjoyed Lotus and Kenan's chemistry, they were very hot for each other from the very beginning. I've read the first book in this series but it's been so long so I don't remember any mention of them. They often reference back to previous meetings between the two so I'd like to go back and read those to get a taste of what they are talking about. But anyway, yes they are very smokin'. I enjoyed how Kenan always thought of himself as introverted but really was an open book with Lotus. And Lotus, man she's had it tough, I'm so glad that she finally has someone to choose her above all else.
All of the trials and tribulations the couple goes through seemed legit for the lifestyles of a professional athlete and a fashion designer and for a recently divorced dad. Kenan continuing to put Simone first was really lovely to see and I really dug the voodoo aspect that Kennedy chose to assign to Lotus. I have no idea how accurate it is but it added a little bit more of "magic" to an already great story.
I'd recommend this book and author to any contemporary romance or sports romance fans...maybe not too much romcom in it but the love story was fantastic on it's own. Thank you so much to BloomBooks for providing me with an eARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
The final book in the HOOPS Series follows Lotus (Iris' cousin) and Kenan (August's teammate). And this one is definitely an emotional one. While I love seeing Iris and Kenan's love story unfold, I love that Kennedy Ryan spends so much of this book making sure that they do the work they each need to do in their own lives before giving them their HEA.
In Long Shot, we see that Iris and Lotus have such a strong bond and we see more of that and their childhood in this book. Lotus is a survivor of childhood SA and it is something that she really begins to process in this book and seeing that journey made me SOB.
I also loved seeing the cultural aspects of Lotus' childhood and the way they have continued to play a huge role in her life.
The love that Kenan and Lotus share is such a beautiful one and I cannot recommend this book and series enough!
Thank you to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books for this earc.
To be honest I had such a hard time getting into this and I am relieved to have finished it. I felt like it moved very slowly. And it couldn't hold my attention. The characters I felt were kind of bland
I love these books so much and everytime I read them, they get better and better. Lotus broke me, Kenan was a precious gem. His ex wife is the absolute worse. I cried more times than I want to admit
