Oh my gosh this book was twisty and insane! It hooked me from the beginning and kept me glued to my seat
To be honest, I didn't read the synopsis of this book, but the title intrigued me enough to want to read it....and I wasn't disappointed. Great storyline and characters. The inclusion of the letters were an added bonus.
Thank you to the author and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed and the story was engaging. I recommend that others try this book as well. Well done!
Another great book by Ellery Kane. She has a way of writing that keeps you totally engrossed in the story and the lives of the characters. This story had many secrets that the characters were trying to keep buried. Hallie is searching for her father and has sent out over 100 letters to all the Robert Thompson that are in the correct age range. She receives notification that Family Ties has found a match and is soon invited to visit. She helps in the family business and becomes friends with Nick. There are secrets everywhere and she is trying to figure who she can trust while keeping her own secrets.
By the description of the book, I was expecting Hallie to become a prisoner in the home. This was not the case. The family dynamics felt very real with sibling rivalry and parental arguments. Great character development. There is a homeless man in the woods and Hallie befriends him. What I was confused about is how he could use the library computer but Hallie could not. Was wondering about his significance in the story and the ending brings this to light.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Ellery Kane for the Advance Reader Copy of this book. I found it to be an exciting read.
This was def a page turner and I enjoyed it, but the end didn’t do it for me. I also thought the description wasn’t quite right…. Never did I feel like she was trapped in the house and you give away one of the twists at the end of the book by saying it’s not her real father in the description. I kept thinking the family was gonna be fake or he was going to be the villain based on the description.
I would rate it closer to a 3.75 if I could!
This had all the elements of a well crafted thriller and I really enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the main character Hallie. I feel she was written in a realistic way and the choices she made did make a lot of sense given her history and current situation. I really liked her relationship with Nick and how they grew as friends throughout the book. I find thrillers can focus entirely on the shock of the plot and can lack in the areas of character development but this book was able to balance both well. I think the pacing of the plot (although slow by thriller standards) felt really good and was able to drop little twists to make the reader feel uneasy while building to the big reveal. The ending was a little bit predictable but I find that there are very few thrillers that blindside me anymore. One thing that I thought was absolutely great was the inclusion of the letter replies Hallie got. This wasn’t essential to the plot but it allowed the reader to breathe a little bit and have a little laugh here and there. The ending nicely wrapped everything up in a satisfying way leaving not many questions from the reader.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture publishing and Ellery A. Kane for this ARC. The Wrong Family will be published on August 30th.
A very good book and an excellent mystery. The highlight were of course the characters and particularly Hallie. Seeing the world through her eyes was a treat. I found every interaction she had with her family extremely engaging. The final twist came a little bit out of nowhere but I didn't mind.
My biggest problem by far with the book is the description. It is from a first person POV while the book is from a third, and most importantly it spoils the ending! I thought that the reveal of the family being fake would come out early but it came out at 3/4 of the book. It kept me from getting that invested in the family.
Overall , a very good read.
I really enjoyed this - so much so that I stayed up late to finish it.
It is well written, fast paced and the twists are not always predictable. I read a lot of thrillers so it takes a lot to make one stand out, but this is one book I highly recommend.
Excellent read, fast-paced, and riveting! Kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next! If you like family drama, this is the one for you. Begs the age-old question of nature vs. nurture.
I really enjoyed this book. A long lost daughter meeting her family for the very first time only to discover that they are hiding secrets and could be dangerous. When things start going wrong, Hallie quickly looks like the suspect. Is her new family setting her up? Who is plotting against Hallie and her new family?
The secrets and questions kept me intrigued and wanting to read more. The characters were relatable and interesting. I did feel like the description of this book made it out to be something it wasn’t. I was expecting the family to be evil and pretending to be related to Hallie for a reason. Not too long into the book I did guess the big twist but I still enjoyed reading what would happen next.
I liked this one overall. We meet Hallie, who has been searching for her birth father. She sent in her DNA to an ancestral site who links her with her birth father. He invites her to his Lake House, which is perfect as she’s just been fired from her job. She goes and meets the rest of the family, but everything is not as it seems in this normal, happy family.
The premise of this book was really interesting and I liked the use of emails to break up some of the drama. Though I will say if I was Hallie I would have left much sooner - that family was too much! I liked the side characters quite a bit, though the family dynamics and drama between the siblings was a lot. Did we have to make one of them a drug dealer? The story was already pretty dramatic! I will say I called one of the twists pretty early on. Overall though an intriguing read that was quick, perfect for a summer afternoon.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love psychological thrillers that dig into the “perfect life,
Perfect husband,
Perfect town” to unravel how not so perfect they are and that’s exactly what this novel masterfully does. Highly recommend!!!
I love this author and was not disappointed with with this book about a young woman who down on her luck finally thinks she has found her father and he offers her a new life and family that she could only dream of but behind the facade things are not what they seem. As things start to fall apart and she feels her life may be in danger the truth may be more scary than she thinks and no one is being honest. Great read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book!
I immediately felt empathetic for the main character, Hallie, with her rough childhood, including loss of her mother. It seemed as nothing would go her way until finally receiving the letter of a match of her biological father. Would this have the outcome she has been seeking?
I liked how the author embedded letters from other Robert Thompson's throughout the book. At times I felt the transitions from location were a bit choppy and the introduction of a new chapter didnt always indicate a change or shift in setting.
I appreciated the sibling rivalry between Hallie and Natalie as expecting a young adult to immediately be accepting of a stranger in your home wouldnt be too believable!
Overall, it was a suspenseful read that kept my interest, 3.5 stars rounded to 4.
The Wrong Family by Ellery A. Kane is a fast paced thriller which is completely gripping and full of loads of twitsts and turns. This did start of a bit slow but I recommend sticking with it as I was soon hooked into this unique story. I loved the suspenseful atmosphere and I didn't want to put this down. I highly recommend to any thriller fans.
Hallie Sherman has been on her own since her mother died when she was nine years old. Now at 28, she’s looking for her father. She has sent letters to every Robert Thompson that she’s able to find, urging them to submit a DNA test to see if he could be her father.
When Hallie receives an email saying she has a match, she is elated. Finally there is a family for her to fit into. Robert and his family are welcoming and try to give Hallie space to fit in within their family, until strange events start taking place and her new family starts to question her intentions.
This was my first time reading a book by Ellery Kane and I really enjoyed it.
The beginning felt a little slow but picked up around a third of the way in and I just couldn’t stop reading.
The characters and the settings are beautifully laid out and I could easily imagine what was happening as I read the book.
I also enjoyed the combination of the story with the letters between chapters. These links to potential fathers were a great way to foreshadow what was coming and I really liked how they added to the twists in the story.

I really enjoyed this book, wasn’t sure I would. It sounded interesting but not overly so. I was pleasantly surprised & invested in our protagonist. The ending is completely jaw dropping! Four solid stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Wrong Family by Ellery A. Kane was a gripping read which had me hooked from start to finish. I loved how I had no idea what to expect, or who to suspect. Full of suspense.
Hallie has been looking for her biological father through both a DNA testing service, and sending letters to every Robert Thompson in the country. When she finally gets a email from the DNA testing service saying there’s been a match Hallie is so excited to meet her long lost father.
Hallie is quickly welcomed into her new family but Hallie has secrets but so does this family.
This was a fast paced thriller with many twists and turns. I would highly recommend this thriller. Thank to thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
The Wrong Family by Ellery A. Kane is my first read from this author, and while I did enjoy it, I found that it lacked the page-turning impetus that I am typically drawn to within this genre.
Hallie has had a difficult childhood. After losing her addict mother in a car accident, and never knowing her father, she was raised in foster care but has been left to her own devices for much of her life. When a DNA search reveals the identity of her biological father as Robert, he welcomes Hallie into the family fold immediately, inviting her to spend the summer with his wife and two other children in Lake Tahoe, where he runs a successful restaurant. But strange and ominous happenings seem to coincide with Hallie's arrival, leaving both her new family and Hallie herself questioning just what danger they have potentially invited into their lives.
This was a bit of a slow burn for me and, while a solid read, it unfortunately failed to keep me fully engaged. I do, however, look forward to the opportunity to read another title from this author in the future.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
The premise of this story is that Haille is a troubled girl, brought up by her addicted mother who died when she was 9 so she then spent time in a series of foster homes. She has hit rock bottom, has received a final notice from her landlord and is making some bad choices at her job waitressing. She has also spent time writing to every Robert Thompson in the state in an effort to connect with her real father (which is stretching credulity somewhat).
She then gets notice that someone's DNA has matched with hers... she has found her father. She meets him, and based on that one meeting he invites her to join his family in Lake Tahoe for the summer. Haille stumbles into this perfect life with a perfect family - they have money and run a restaurant, which coincidentally is also her dream.
However, Haille hasn't stopped making bad choices, and a series of events befall the family and eventually the finger is being pointed at Haille, who hasn't been very truthful about her past.
The whole plot is quite convoluted and didn't really ring true, but its a fun read. The characters are quite one dimensional, and their lives and what happens just weren't completely believable for me. I stuck with it as I wanted to see how it all panned out, and it was explained, albeit not very convincingly. So overall worth a read, but with a good pinch of salt!
