This book had me hooked from the beginning. It had great twists and turns, all the way to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend to other thriller lovers.
This book was thrilling and intense. I couldn’t put it down! I loved the unreliable characters. I didn’t know who or what to trust. The story kept me guessing right until the end.
Hallie Sherman has never met her father and after her mother passes tragically, she decides to try and find him. After submitting her DNA to Family Ties, as well as sending out a huge batch of letters to all the Robert Thompsons she can find, she thinks she may have actually found him. He is everything she dreamt of in a father, successful, warm and strong. When he invites her to spend time with him and his wife and children at his Lake Tahoe home, Hallie is over the moon. But upon arrival, she begins to have her doubts. Robert’s wife Shelly is very welcoming, but both children (Natalie and Logan) seem a bit guarded. Then, strange things begin to happen; slashed tires, a burnt photo, and even a dead body. Someone seems to be trying to frame Hallie for the crimes. In this strange new home with her “new family”, Hallie realizes she doesn’t know who she can really trust. But Hallie has secrets of her own and it is just a matter of time that her lies will catch up with her. This was an entertaining novel. Although it dragged a bit, I enjoyed the read and gave it 3 stars.
Hallie has been on her own, trying to make it by since she was a kid. Her mothers passed and her father was never in the picture. She completes a DNA test and gets a match for her biological father. She is thrilled to be welcomed into her seemingly perfect family. But things start going wrong, like a cut bridge, and defaced family portraits. Maybe the family isn’t all as perfect as they seem, and maybe this isn’t even Hallie family.
I enjoyed this book. I started off hating Hallie. Before she goes to be with her new family she is almost unbearable. She is desperate, behind on rent etc, but ruins her chance of keeping her job, makes terrible decisions, and has no remorse for her actions. Luckily she gets better and I warmed up to her as the book goes on.
Fast paced and easy reading. I really wanted to keep reading to try to figure out what was going on, who was responsible and what other secrets the family had.
Hallie has never met her father but desperate to meet him, she has sent out many letters to people with his name and registered on a DNA matching site. One day, her dream comes true and a man says he is her father. He welcomes her into his family. Mysterious things keep happening and then someone dies. She is a suspect and things get worse for Hallie when she finds out she isn’t actually related to this man.
This book confused me. The synopsis and the title make it seem like Hallie is going to be almost in a Get Out situation where the family is actively trying to kill her and she is trapped in that sense. The trapped is more that she has nowhere else to go and she doesn’t even find out she isn’t relayed until like about 80% in. I just didn’t get the suspense I thought I was going to. I also don’t think The Wrong Family is a good title here because again, it plays up an aspect that isn’t really a huge part of the plot.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Oh, Ellery Kane! You keep me guessing. Half of the time I love you and half of the time I hate you.
This book, on its surface, was easy to read. I was just cruising through and expecting to not care too much. But…here’s where it get weird…I did! I wanted to know what happened to Hallie. She was searching for her father. She thought she found him. Not she needs to know if she found him or if she is just being used!
I wanted to know what happened to her. Jay…he was obvious. Robert was obviously not what he seemed. They are inconsequential. I loved watching it end.
The Wrong Family was a story of twists and turns, good and evil and family ties. Hallie desperately looking for the family she never had finds one with too many secrets. Natalie and Logan were spoiled little brats who only looked out for themselves and she thought she found a friend in Jay ( Jesse) before all hell broke loose. Nick and his family were a good addition, balancing the good with the evil. I would recommend this book to others.
The Wrong Family is a gripping domestic thriller that had me intrigued from the very beginning. I did find this to be a slow burn of a read for the first half. However the second half went at a much faster pace. I really enjoyed the build up at the start, getting to know the characters. I was suspicious of everyone as the author slowly drip feeds you information about thr characters. This is one of those great reads where I has absolutely no clue who was telling the truth. The letters that were dispersed through the story were an excellent addition to the book and I loved reading them. 4⭐️
I have loved every single book this author has written to date.
This story is just crazy, twisted, and quite suspenseful.
In some ways sad, and wow I never thought who did it...
Hallie has wanted to find her biological father, so when a DNA match says they found him she is thrilled... Well, maybe the word is THRILLER...
They have money... so what?
They have power... so what?
What they don't have at the end of this story is her.
I really enjoyed this book!
The premise intrigued me, and as I read I constantly got a huge sense of foreboding wondering what would happen. I did get feelings of frustration though, as I saw our main protaganist being so gullible at times, and not asking questions to the right people.
The book is interspersed with replies of her messages to as many 'Robert Thompson' as she could find, asking if they are her father. I loved these! Funny, sweet, and such a brilliant addition to the story.
Would recommend to fans of domestic thrillers!
#NetGalleyARC This was SO good! It kept me wondering where the story was going to end up and which characters to trust, or not to trust. A great read for the fall, perfect to curl up on a couch with. Not scary but definitely a thrilling read.
I loved the idea when i read what this book was about. A long lost father and a chance for a family. But with buried secrets from her new family and secrets in her past shes trying to keep hidden this book keeps you hooked.
There were some slow parts in the middle and in my opinion the backstory of the main family could have been built up a little bit more.
But once the action really gets going you wont be able to put this down!
Ty to the author and netgalley for the arc. I really enjoyed it.
The Wrong Family is a fantastic, unputdownable read. It was fast paced, full of twists and turns and had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It had everything I wanted in a book and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
BOOKWORMS REVIEW:
To me this was mostly a domestic drama with thriller parts, more than the psychological thriller it's marketed as,just my opinion. Hallie Sherman is out to find her long lost father after her mum dies. Along with sending her DNA off to a genealogy website she also writes to every Robert Thompson she thinks qualifies her criteria. She gets a reply with a first degree paternal match...she's found her Dad. Invited to his family home on Lake Tahoe, Hallie settles in and is mostly welcomed by the family. But when things start to go wrong,of course Hallies the suspect. The latter part of the story was more exciting for me as things started to escalate, and Hallie found herself in danger following a big twist. I had my suspicions about the villain but I wasn't right,so that's always good. Loved how the responses from the Robert Thompsons was done, great touch.
Overall a good read.
With thanks to Bookouture NetGalley and @ellerykane for an arc to read and review.
BOOKWORMS RATING: 📒📒📒📒
I read Watch Her Vanish and Her Perfect Bones and so Ellery Kane's newest release, The Wrong Family, piqued my curiosity. The suspense, engaging storyline, plot twists and interesting characters will have readers glued to the pages as they attempt to unravel the secrets of the Thompson family.
The Wrong Family tells the story of Hallie Sherman. Since losing her mom at the tender age of nine, Hallie has been in and out of several foster homes. During this time, the life she lived was plagued with one misfortune after the other. During this time, she searches for the man who sired her. In doing so, she engaged the services of an ancestry/genetic testing company, Family Ties. Now at the age of twenty-eight, her search bore fruit. One of the many Robert Thompson's responded, indicating he was a match. However, on her arrival in the Thompson's home, weird things start happening. For some reason, these events always lead back to her. She now needs to unravel the mystery behind the events, before it's too late.
Hallie was a flawed but likeable character. However, the same can't be said of most of the secondary characters. Not only were they flawed, bur they were also rotten to the core. One cannot help but feel empathy for Hallie. Having endured so much pain and loss, she is trying to find a place where she fits in. She believes the Thompson's could provide her with all she had missed out on growing up.
Although the pacing was not as one would expect from a thriller, the suspense on the pages made it a riveting read. Also trying to figure out the source of the strange events along with the family secrets aided in making this a page turner. It was interesting seeing how the series of events leading up to the shocking revelation played out. I had an inkling regarding a particular character and their role in the weird events. However, I never expected the shocking reveal regarding their identity.
Overall, an intriguing read which ended on a satisfying note with justice served. I wholeheartedly recommend The Wrong Family to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers.
Just finished this new release from Ellery Kane and here are four reasons for four stars:
🌟The Lake Tahoe setting is a place on my bucket list. Loved my book escape there.
🌟The search Hallie has undertaken to find her birth father seems a bit foolhardy yet seems to have paid off big time. Throughout the book we get a glimpse into the letters and emails returned by the other potential candidates.
🌟While there seem to be one of more villains amongst the Thompson clan, Hallie is no saint herself. What skeletons are in her closet? Will justice be served?
🌟The restaurant kitchen scenes give us a chance to read about gourmet food prep. Goes right along with shows we enjoy like "Master Chef." Hallie was perfecting a Lobster Grilled Cheese sandwich for a competition. I want one of those!
All in all, an entertaining read which also makes us think about the consequences of spitting in that tube and, who we choose to become intimate with at all levels.
Thank you to Bookouture and Dreamscape for both digital and audio ARCs in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb for this book indicates that Ellery's new-found Father may be lying about something. It transpires that he is, but he's not the only one! EVERYONE IS LYING!
In these times where DNA testing "for fun" is becoming so popular, the premise for this book is fascinating - it's kind of similar to the IVF egg switch or baby switch tropes, but with a whole new and bang up to date theme. Finding your long-lost family, only to find the test was a mix up - WHAT?
The web of lies and deceit is spun so tightly, that it becomes impossible for the reader to know what is going to happen as the twists keep coming.
I really liked Hallie and Nick, couldn't bear Natalie, but that's the idea! I totally related to why Hallie felt drawn to Jay.
Amongst all of the chilling and twisty things going on, the inclusion of letters and emails from some of the other Robert Thompsons Hallie had written to was absolutely genius and they made me howl with laughter!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Ellery A Kane and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review.
The strange things just keep happening in this book that is part thriller, part horror and all good reading! All Hallie wants is to find her father so she can have a family, a real one instead of the temporary foster homes that had become part of her life. So when she takes a DNA test and finds a man who matches as her father, she is happily surprised. When Robert Thompson invites her to the family home to get to know the rest of his family, Hallie doesn’t hesitate. This starts as a slow burn and then picks up pace incredibly fast as Hallie is tormented in unimaginable ways while she is getting to know her new family. Hallie hasn’t been honest about hardly anything, but someone in the household may be trying to kill her and she doesn’t know who or why. This book is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock and Mary Higgins Clark, weaving a good mystery into some real drama and scary moments as well. I enjoyed the story and the characters although I did not find any of them particularly relatable. Hallie is deceptive and manipulative, but she is understandably desperate to belong somewhere. Her father Robert seems charming and generous while Shelley, the mom, is saccharine sweet. Some characters I did not trust from the beginning and some surprised me because of twists in the story. This is a quick read once you get to the Thompson home and the action races along a course bound for disaster for someone.

I love reading thrillers, and this one did not disappoint! The writing flowed well and was easy to understand, and the story was fast-paced and entertaining. I kept trying to figure out the mystery, but the author had me guessing until the very end. The twists and turns made this book really hard to put down and extremely “bingeable”!
