I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. This is book #2 in The Doctor's Wife series.
As Fern starts her new life after the death of her husband, Drew, she is on top of the world. Fancy new car, large new house, and now, a possible man on the horizon. However, everything is not as it appears.
Alice is in jail, charged and convicted of Drew's murder, still stating she is innocence. There is someone who believes her and is going to help prove that she is. However, will he end up like the rest??
This series is so good. I need to go get #3 and #4 to see how it ends.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. So the summary and title of this book really made me excited to read it. I expected from the summary that there would be a bit of mystery with it and there wasn’t at all.
The book was ok but there was just nothing in it that I had expected to find. I kept reading expecting something to happen but nothing did. This one just wasn’t really for me.
Daniel Hurst's *The Doctor's Widow* is a riveting psychological thriller that picks up the chilling tale of deceit and suspense from his previous novel, *The Doctor’s Wife*. This sequel dives deep into the complexities of trust, betrayal, and the haunting spectre of past secrets.
The novel centres on the recently widowed character who was once married to Doctor Drew Devlin. As she tries to move forward with her life, utilising her newfound wealth from Drew’s life insurance, she purchases a luxurious new home, believing she has left her troubles behind. Hurst skilfully sets the stage for a story filled with tension and suspense, hinting that not all is as it seems with her seemingly perfect new beginning.
Enter Roger, a charming and honest man who seems to be the antithesis of her late husband. Their relationship blossoms quickly, and the protagonist begins to find solace in his company. Hurst’s portrayal of Roger is intriguing; he appears to be the perfect distraction, yet his presence introduces a new layer of suspense. The protagonist’s growing trust in Roger contrasts sharply with her past experiences, highlighting her deep desire for stability and honesty.
However, the narrative takes a dark turn when Roger’s true nature begins to surface. A casual remark during an intimate moment sends chills down the protagonist's spine, suggesting that Roger might know more about her past than she has let on. Hurst masterfully builds this suspense, keeping readers on edge as they question Roger’s motives and the protagonist’s safety.
*The Doctor's Widow* excels in its ability to keep readers guessing. Hurst’s plot is packed with unexpected twists and turns that challenge the protagonist’s—and the reader’s—perception of truth and trust. The pacing is brisk, with each chapter adding a new layer of complexity to the unfolding drama.
This author is such a favorite of mine! His books do not disappoint, and this is no exception! What a plot twist! I could not put it down. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of The Doctor's WIdow by Daniel Hurst in exchange for my honest review and opinion. This is a fantastic fast paced psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this book. If you like a fast paced book than I suggest you read this right away..
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book. This was the second book and it was better than the first! The characters are crazy good and the story kept me guessing and reading late into the night.
This is the second book in the series, following on from The Doctor’s Wife. We meet up again with Fern, who is now the Doctor’s widow. She has bought herself a new luxury house with Drew’s life insurance and has a new boyfriend, Roger. We also meet up with Alice who was charged with Drew’s murder. She is in prison and having a tough time there. An old friend of Drew’s, who is an ex policeman, is convinced that Alice is innocent and that Fern was responsible for Drew’s death. But how is he going to be able to prove it? He visits Alice in prison and says that he will prove her innocence. This means finding a way to prove that Fern is responsible for Drew’s death but Fern is a dangerous woman who is hiding even more secrets. I enjoyed this book, probably even more than the first one. I eagerly await the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book,
"The Doctor's Widow" by Daniel Hurst is a gripping thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Hurst's masterful storytelling and skillful pacing make for an enthralling read that is hard to put down.

The book opens with Fern having buried her husband, Dr. Drew Devlin. Drew was found murdered at the end of the last book and Alice is behind bars for the crime. Alice is the woman that Drew was having an affair with at the time he was murdered. Fern is pretending to grieve over her husband's death as she is the reason he is dead. Her plan worked to perfection and she showed Drew what happens when you're unfaithful to her. Alice is paying the price for daring to have an affair with Fern's husband and Rory was a loose end that had to be taken care of. Don't cross Fern Devlin or you'll regret it!
After the funeral, Fern is driving a luxurious Mercedes Benz that she bought with Drew's life insurance money. She has more money now than she could ever spend and she loves it! Fern is on her way to the real estate office next to pick up the keys to her new mansion in one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Manchester. Fern is putting the past behind her sure that she's outwitted everyone. But has she? Fern is dating Roger, but is keeping it a secret so it doesn't look bad for her so soon after Drew's death. She wants everyone to think she's hurting and grieving so dating someone this soon wouldn't look good. Fern wants her friends and family to think she's having a hard time getting past Drew's murder. As she picks up the key to the house, she is excited to get to it and see all that is hers. When Fern goes inside her new house she can't believe that this is now her life. She calls Roger and asks him to come over tonight to celebrate. She hasn't decorated yet, but has some necessary furniture coming from storage in the next
hour.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy.
Daniel Hurst really knows how to write! A follow up that was just as good as the first! He’s written a lot of books, all of fantastic quality storylines, this had it all, dark and mysterious, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next in the. Series!
A gripping, fast paced, fun book that delivered on all levels!!! Daniel Hurst has wowed me yet again! I enjoyed The Doctor’s Wife it left me with my jaw hanging open at one of the twists. I was so excited when I saw that there was another book in the series coming out. As with the first book, The Doctor's Widow was fast paced, well thought out, and riveting! I did not want to put this book down. If you have not read The Doctor’s Wife, I highly recommend reading it prior to reading The Doctor's Widow. You will be happy you did. Both are terrific!
This is the second book in the series. I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. I love the way Daniel writes and will read anything he publishes.
**a huge thank you to NetGalley, the publisher & the author for the opportunity to review an ARC of this book**
A continuation of The Doctor's Wife, and it did not fall short!
These little popcorn thrillers are addictive and fast paced.
Fern is the toxic queen you love but know you should hate!
After offing her husband and framing his mistress for his murder, she is in her glory living her carefree rich life with his life insurance money and dreamy new man Roger, who is actually playing his part in investigating Drew's murder. Roger is actually named Greg, and was a friend of Drew's that Fern never met that doesn't believe that Alice murdered Drew.
Fern gets pretty confident in thinking she will never be caught for her crimes, but will she?
Perhaps Fern is a bit delusional to think it all could be so easy, especially when she trusts this new guy Roger that she barely knows, and as we all know, things aren't always as they seem.
Four stars!
I thought this book was a bit silly to be honest. It's quite far fetched. However, the writing style is good, the settings are described well, the tone is interesting. I think lots of readers will enjoy it if they are willing to allow the premise to be kind of silly. Not too bad, just not my cup of tea as the plot was too outlandish for my taste.
Now that naughty Drew and Alice have paid for their misdeeds, Fern is enjoying her newfound freedom, fabulous new house and a new man and she won't let anything or anyone get in her way......but is all as it seems?
While I liked this 2nd book, I wasn't as invested in the characters as much and a lot of the story felt repetitive. Fern was very cunning in the 1st book only to be naive in the 2nd. I still enjoyed seeing what Alice and Fern were up to since we last saw them.
The second in the series of three, I was so excited to read this and I wasn’t disappointed. Another 5 starer for Daniel Hurst!
Fern Devlin is happy, having got rid of both Drew, Alice and Rory, she is living the high life on Drew’s life insurance payout. She has bought a new house which is just perfect for her fresh start and has a new man, Roger, in her life too. Everything is rosy for her bar the nightmares of Drew that are plaguing her. Alice, however, isn’t doing so well, life in prison is very very hard. She still can’t understand how she has been charged with Drew’s murder but is just trying her hardest to keep her head down and get by day by day. Then Alice has a visitor, a man called Greg. Greg is an old friend of Drew’s and an ex-policeman. When he hears about Drew’s untimely demise there just feels like something is “off” about the whole scenario and after putting together all the facts he is convinced that Fern isn’t as innocent as she wants everyone to believe and so he decides to prove this theory. He meets Alice and can’t deny that he was a little bit enchanted by her but tells her of his theory and how he will prove her innocence. However, Fern is clever so Greg will have to try and outwit her whilst knowing that he is essentially playing with a lady who constantly leaves dead victims in her wake. Will Greg manage to trap Fern into telling the truth and get Alice freed? Or will he just be another one of her victims?!
I absolutely loved binging this series and I definitely enjoyed book 2 just as much as book 1, in fact maybe even a little bit more. Once again, I was thinking about the storyline when I wasn’t reading it (that tells me it’s a good book!), and I was shocked at Fern’s proposition to Roger early on in the book, talk about raising the stakes! Things got really interesting at the half way point as the tables turned and at this point I was extremely addicted to the plot and was getting very annoyed when life got in the way of reading (again that tells me is a good book). I did see the twist at the end with Fern but most definitely did not see the Alice twist! Fern is one heck of a villain; in fact, I think she is in my top 5 book villains.
Another great psychological thriller from Daniel Hurst, I highly recommend this to anyone who loves this genre. I am so excited to start book 3!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Daniel Hurst and Bookouture my advanced reading copy. Out now.
The Doctors Widow follows closely to the first book and would recommend reading the books in order. After Fern has killed her cheating husband Dr Drew, framed his mistress, Alice for his murder then killed Alice’s husband who was in cahoots, Fern is trying to live the lie she has created. But Drew’s old friend Greg is convinced that Fern was responsible for Drew’s death and sets out to find out the truth and goes undercover as Ferns new boyfriend, Roger. Will Fern her her comeuppance?
A fast paced psychological thriller that you can easily read in one sitting, wanting more. You want to hate Fern, but love her at the same time, she is conniving and evil but you want her to continue getting away with her crimes. Tension is kept high and cleverly written. Looking forward to the next instalment!
Great book to read !! I do not read the first book in this series so I was a little lost at times . I recommend reading the series in order . The writer held my attention from start to finish. I look forward to the third book .
I just reviewed The Doctor's Widow (The Doctor's Wife Book 2) by Daniel Hurst. #TheDoctorsWidow #NetGalley
Thank you Netgalley and Bookoutre for the ARC of this book
Wow Daniel really knows how to write a great book
This is the follow on from the Doctor's Wife and well worth the wait.
I devoured this in a day, neglecting anything else and wow it was worth it.
Can we please have another?
I cannot recommend highly enough reading this sequel and the first book.
This is the second book in The Doctor’s Wife series. I really enjoyed the first book (The Doctor’s Wife) and this book was good too! It took me forever to get through because I just wasn’t in the mood to read it. Once I got to 50% it had me hooked and really picked up! The ending was really surprising! There is a third book in this series and I will be reading it. I recommend this series if you like twisty thrillers.
